Erick Dampier is better than Shaq (miloaukerman), Thursday, 15 December 2005 06:02 (eighteen years ago) link

This is a good place to remind everyone that Songs from the Second Floor is the best film of the last 5 years. Everyone should see it.

Tuomas (Tuomas), Thursday, 15 December 2005 08:01 (eighteen years ago) link

Also, fifteen votes seems kinda low. That'll only give me the chance to vote for the ten films I nominated plus five more.

Tuomas (Tuomas), Thursday, 15 December 2005 08:18 (eighteen years ago) link

And why do the worst films have to be from the same list of nominees? I doubt anyone deliberately nommed some shitty flicks.

Tuomas (Tuomas), Thursday, 15 December 2005 08:20 (eighteen years ago) link

Ah, forget that last comment, I see that there are enough bad films (Dancer in the Dark, Grouching Tiger, Ichi the Killer, Million Dollar Hotel, The Pledge, etc) on the nominations list already.

Tuomas (Tuomas), Thursday, 15 December 2005 08:27 (eighteen years ago) link

(xpost) That makes it more interesting, though. I was pleased to list three films I think are overrated garbage.

jaymc (jaymc), Thursday, 15 December 2005 08:28 (eighteen years ago) link

Somehow I feel some films, like Irreversible, Dancer in the Dark or Grouching Tiger, have a good chance of ending on both lists.

Tuomas (Tuomas), Thursday, 15 December 2005 08:37 (eighteen years ago) link

Well, at least I can on some level understand why someone might've liked those three films, but why would anyone even nominate Ichi the Killer remains a total mystery to me.

Tuomas (Tuomas), Thursday, 15 December 2005 10:21 (eighteen years ago) link

i mean obv you don't have to agree with a film's politix to enjoy it or admire it but the whole 'it's morning in france' whitewash (literally) rightwing jizzing and such really got under my skin. plus that fucking gnome - guhhhhh.

j blount (papa la bas), Thursday, 15 December 2005 10:22 (eighteen years ago) link

tuomas have you actually seen amelie? or just screencaps of tatou's nipslip?

j blount (papa la bas), Thursday, 15 December 2005 10:23 (eighteen years ago) link

Yeah, I have seen it, but it's been a few years, and I have little idea what you're talking about. Would you care to elaborate a bit more?

Tuomas (Tuomas), Thursday, 15 December 2005 10:26 (eighteen years ago) link

the movie's racist and rightwing as fuck, almost definitely the most conservative flick on the nod list (including the incredibles!), there's no mystery, it's sorta well known.

j blount (papa la bas), Thursday, 15 December 2005 10:29 (eighteen years ago) link

If you're going to just repeat saying it's racist without explaining why there's little point in this discussion.

Tuomas (Tuomas), Thursday, 15 December 2005 10:32 (eighteen years ago) link

tuomas do a nexis search, 'amelie's racist' vs. 'no no it's just conservative' composed like 80% of the discussion of it at the time, it's maybe why it was rejected from cannes, i'm not gonna rehash every hackneyed thinkpiece about that fascist fluff from 2001 for you, esp if you're too fucking dense or racist to figure out on yr own.

j blount (papa la bas), Thursday, 15 December 2005 10:38 (eighteen years ago) link

i can't remember anything racist about Amelie - unless it's the 'no dark-skinned people in Paris at all' thing, uh. must rewatch.

Sororah T Massacre (blueski), Thursday, 15 December 2005 10:40 (eighteen years ago) link

i mean hey if you want to get off on a whites-only vision of france and rightwing wetdream that's fine, maybe sarkozy needs volunteers, it takes all kinds, but don't use faux-naivete and 'o gee, i never noticed and point it out all you like i'm not gonna notice kthxbye' as a lifevest, at least gear's upfront about his filmkinks.

j blount (papa la bas), Thursday, 15 December 2005 10:45 (eighteen years ago) link

i guess if there was no racist (sub)text to assume about anything you would surely cease to exist with immediate effect.

Sororah T Massacre (blueski), Thursday, 15 December 2005 10:52 (eighteen years ago) link

Sororah T Massacre (blueski), Thursday, 15 December 2005 10:53 (eighteen years ago) link

First of all, Amelie has at least one North African character (Lucien), though I guess race plays no part in his role - which can be seen as a good or bad thing, depending on your view. Secondly, if lack of non-white characters is a sign of racism, then there are quite a lot of racist films in the world (possibly including your top two films, Blount). Thirdly, somehow I doubt Mathieu Kassovitz would've agreed to star in the film if he'd seen it or it's director as racist. Woody Allen always faces the charges that he doesn't include black characters in his films, but his answer is that he writes about the world he knows (the world of middle-class Jewish people, that is). I know exclusion is a big problem, but you also have to accept that not every movie can or needs to be about race.

j blount (papa la bas), Thursday, 15 December 2005 11:27 (eighteen years ago) link

Wait, Lucien's boss in the film was North African too, right? Was it racist to portray them as street vendors? I dunno. Positive discrimination can be problematic too.

If you read that Film Comment article, it actually tackles the racism claims in quite a sensible way. Amélie is a fairy tale, not a socially conscious drama.

Tuomas (Tuomas), Thursday, 15 December 2005 11:27 (eighteen years ago) link

(x-post)

No, I was just trying to make the point that not dealing with race doesn't equate racist. Problematic, maybe, but not every film can deal with everything.

Tuomas (Tuomas), Thursday, 15 December 2005 11:29 (eighteen years ago) link

birth of a nation was a fairytale, reagan's 'morning in america' ads were a fairytale. and amelie does deal with race. pointedly. but you're right, best not to think about art or what they say about the society that produces it. just consume consume consume! seen king kong yet?

j blount (papa la bas), Thursday, 15 December 2005 11:33 (eighteen years ago) link

Okay let me be more clear: not dealing with race can be racist, but it isn't always. And in some movies it's more problematic than in others. Take Changing Lanes, for example. It's a movie that from the outset seems to be about race and class, but in the end manages to sidestep these issues by making the conflict between the protagonists a personal one (Samuel Jackson's character has anger management problems, see) rather than one between a lower class black man and an upper class white man. In that film it's discourage to tackle these issues is far more problematic than in Amélie, because it's whole premise is exactly about racial and class stratification. Whereas Amélie is a fairy tale that deals with race by not dealing with it (though it doesn't exactly exclude it, as I pointed out), which can be viewed as problematic too, but I'd say less so. Which leads to my other point...

birth of a nation was a fairytale, reagan's 'morning in america' ads were a fairytale. and amelie does deal with race. pointedly. but you're right, best not to think about art or what they say about the society that produces it.

First of all, your comparison is totally unfair, but I think you know it. Secondly, of course you need to think about the society that produces art, but that doesn't mean we can't enjoy certain pieces of art, like Amélie, nevertheless. Otherwise we'd need to throw out most of the films ever made, including 99% of Golden Age Hollywood movies. But I don't think you really disagree with me on this.

Amelie isn't intentionally racist, just sort of subconsciously racist, like Jeunet never encountered a minority in his life and therefore doesn't even think about them. actually, Black Hawk Down is a sort of iffy film, because while it's a really tense and well-done story, it doesn't even really talk about the context of the anger towards the americans and manages to neatly sidestep the issues by nominally just being about the soldiers' experiences. which results in a whole lot of angry somalians being gunned down with no more weight than a bunch of thugs from a john woo film. i still liked in, to a point.

gear (gear), Thursday, 15 December 2005 16:57 (eighteen years ago) link

There are two sequences in BHD in which the context is pretty well discussed by Aidid's business partner and later by his lieutenant, with the American troops. It's less well explained in presumably less offensive modern war films like BEL or WWSOAY, but you could probably write a decent 25-pager on the recurring theme of "mind your own fucking business" inherent in antagonists' motivation in recent war cinema

TOMBOT, Thursday, 15 December 2005 17:18 (eighteen years ago) link

Amelie isn't intentionally racist, just sort of subconsciously racist, like Jeunet never encountered a minority in his life and therefore doesn't even think about them.

Well, he did include two of them in the film, didn't he? Though maybe the problem is that he didn't treat them as representatives of a minority rather than characters in story, whose ethnicity has no relevance, only their personality, which is why people don't think of the as "ethnic". Which I think should be seen as a positive thing.

Tuomas (Tuomas), Thursday, 15 December 2005 17:36 (eighteen years ago) link

yeah since race doesnt matter in france

zzzz, Thursday, 15 December 2005 17:37 (eighteen years ago) link

The bigger problem seems to be that there aren't any more "ethnic" characters in Amélie, so the film isn't seen as representing "true" Montmartre. Which is a valid criticism, I guess, but kinda stretching it. Do films like Amélie need to be representative? Should we start looking at the extras, counting how many of them are non-white?

(x-post)

Race does matter in France, but should race matter in every French movie, even in such a non-realist flick as Amélie?

What are the correct terms, then? I guess the two characters in Amélie could be described as North African, but in the film's world they're quite French and their ethnicity is never discussed. I put "ethnic" in quotes because it is often used as a shorthand for "non-white", even though white people are obviously "ethnic" as well.

Of course terms like "white", "black" and "race" are problematic too, since there's no essential grounds for their usage - they can't be avoided, however, as long as people are being classified according to them.

Granted, there isn't an in-depth discourse on the nature of race and nationalist hegemony running through Amelie, but since its a slightly twee, nostalgic love story (of sorts) that's not too surprising. My main problem with what you're saying is that you could aim that claim at SO MANY films - most Hollywood love stories, for example. If your sole objection is lack of non-white characters, why select this film in particular?

Also, in your point above, you seem to be suggesting that all characters who are not white should have storylines that make a point of this. Surely this would be a step backwards?

hobart paving (hobart paving), Thursday, 15 December 2005 18:06 (eighteen years ago) link

What is a North African then? If Lucien is a second or third generation immigrant, is he North African? Besides, I was talking about the lack of non-white characters in Amélie, so I used the word "ethnic" because there other minorities than North Africans in Paris.

France is horribly racist in a lot of ways - I was appalled by the amount of blatant and hateful racist graffiti the first time I visited Paris. I don't much want to defend Amelie, but simply underrepresenting ethnic minorities is a crime committed by a substantial majority of American and British film and TV, so it seems odd to single it out only for that. I'm not clear in what ways it is proposing this much-whiter Paris as preferable - I thought Amelie the character was presented as a ray of sunshine in a pretty lousy world, and don't recall any sense of being encouraged to see that Paris as a better one.

zzzzzz, Thursday, 15 December 2005 20:14 (eighteen years ago) link

I don't know, Ethan, did you see Amelie?

'Twan (miccio), Thursday, 15 December 2005 20:28 (eighteen years ago) link

And have you ever been to Manhattan?

'Twan (miccio), Thursday, 15 December 2005 20:29 (eighteen years ago) link

i was gonna ask

gabbneb (gabbneb), Thursday, 15 December 2005 20:30 (eighteen years ago) link

never saw amelie but ive been to manhattan, the only non-white ppl i saw were driving maintenance trucks or pushing carriages with white babies, it was really shocking actually

zzzz, Thursday, 15 December 2005 20:32 (eighteen years ago) link

And I haven't even brought up the female leads re: his film's offensive fantastical qualities.

x-post wtf?!

'Twan (miccio), Thursday, 15 December 2005 20:32 (eighteen years ago) link

All the people in Chinatown are actually Mickey Rooney in makeup.

jaymc (jaymc), Thursday, 15 December 2005 20:34 (eighteen years ago) link

Did you take first class to get there? I always take the bus.

'Twan (miccio), Thursday, 15 December 2005 20:34 (eighteen years ago) link

And all the latinos in Washington Heights and Spanish Harlem are actually John Tutturro.

gabbneb (gabbneb), Thursday, 15 December 2005 20:35 (eighteen years ago) link

I think it's a bit of a shame that people post their votes here, rather than just email them in, cause I kind of feel I know what the winner will be already. But I guess I could just not look at this thread.

Alba (Alba), Thursday, 15 December 2005 20:37 (eighteen years ago) link

My list - which I emailed earlier - doesn't much resemble those on show here. Lots of middlebrow US indie and SE Asian films, really.

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Thursday, 15 December 2005 20:46 (eighteen years ago) link

The film I have in mind is my #1 too, so I'm happy really.

never saw amelie but ive been to manhattan, the only non-white ppl i saw were driving maintenance trucks or pushing carriages with white babies, it was really shocking actually

and what were the white people you saw doing?

gabbneb (gabbneb), Thursday, 15 December 2005 20:56 (eighteen years ago) link

The one thing I think is odd/funny about the Amelie argument is that Tautou plays a Turk (or Arab) quite effectively in Dirty Pretty Things.

the only non-white ppl i saw

did you see more white ppl than non-white ppl? strange, given that white non-hispanics are just 35% of the city

gabbneb (gabbneb), Thursday, 15 December 2005 20:59 (eighteen years ago) link

nah the votes posted on the board are always misleading, it's like the 04 exit polls. manhattan seemed kinda white when i was there but then 1) i'm used to atlanta and athens and 2) i was hanging with an indie-saddo crowd (morbs i hate high fidelity cuz of it's authenticity and cuz it depends on getting a great performance out of cusack, which is like depending on getting a hr from podsednik - it happens but don't count on it, but mainly cuz i'm not sure if after 1000 films dealing with boring middle aged white dude has a midlife crisis and thinks he might hate women we need another one, even if it has belle and sebastian on the soundtrack). this isn't necessarily a bad thing right? it = less white flight pretty much (or admittedly 'more rich folx' which ok yes is a bad thing). obv there's downsides, you guys keep electing republicans for example, and gentrification yeah but still it's not like new york's not diverse. just not certain neighborhoods. the rich ones. it's like a dirtier paris kinda!

j blount (papa la bas), Thursday, 15 December 2005 21:04 (eighteen years ago) link

uhhhh

gabbneb (gabbneb), Thursday, 15 December 2005 21:11 (eighteen years ago) link

Athens is more non-white than Manhattan? Does that make REM videos racist fantasies?

'Twan (miccio), Thursday, 15 December 2005 21:11 (eighteen years ago) link

i'll bet the upper east side and soho are a hell of a lot more diverse than buckhead or belle meade

gabbneb (gabbneb), Thursday, 15 December 2005 21:12 (eighteen years ago) link

That token dancing woman and Weaver D aside.

my mistake, blount.

You'd think some voters might want to check out things they haven't seen before Jan. 3? If Colin voted for Bring It On I'm intrigued...

yeah let me clarify ive only ever lived in georgia & south carolina, im sure manhattan seems less white if youre from like utah or some midwest shit

zzzzzz, Thursday, 15 December 2005 21:20 (eighteen years ago) link

dude tone this might blow yr mind but the south america's still crazy segregated! also you're forgetting the black dude that used to work at the taco stand in the 'shiny happle people' video. and krs-one. but yeah if you were to look at say the local govt or alot of parties or hip indie bars or ESP the local press you'd have no idea. also do you really want to introduce the 'wait wait wait - is the indie rock world segregated and not very diverse? that's crazy talk!' discussion to this thread. ethan's still around dude, and there's still a few non-tories and non-yuppies left on this board to have his back.

zzzzzz, Thursday, 15 December 2005 21:28 (eighteen years ago) link

anyway i dont know who anthony thinks hes baiting with REM = racist, im down with that (especially after stipe told me his favorite djs in athens [therefore probly all of GA] were the krush girls)

zzzzzz, Thursday, 15 December 2005 21:30 (eighteen years ago) link

blount, relax, I know this all started just cuz you wanted to bully the goofy foreigner.

geddit - 'after the end'

j blount (papa la bas), Thursday, 15 December 2005 21:32 (eighteen years ago) link

Bring It On is excellent - it was on my shortlist, though it didn't make my 15.

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Thursday, 15 December 2005 21:43 (eighteen years ago) link

bring it on was underwhelming really, i dont know why its everybodys token 00s teen movie

zzzzzz, Thursday, 15 December 2005 21:47 (eighteen years ago) link

what's your token?

(i ask because rentals are free for clerks like me)

'Twan (miccio), Thursday, 15 December 2005 21:48 (eighteen years ago) link

cant hardly wait, i know what you did last summer, cruel intentions, american pie 1 & 2, the wood, election, loser, the faculty, varsity blues, etc etc etc

zzzzzzzz, Thursday, 15 December 2005 21:52 (eighteen years ago) link

I like what of those I've seen except for AP2. If I was going to make a list CI, AP1, Election and the Faculty (that was 00s?) could make it.

This whole thread is going to be pretty worthwhile for me - I've seen very few movies from 00-04, in part because I didn't feel like having the debates with friends after Donnie Darko & Mulholland Dr. (my favorite positive reviews of the latter were "i like movies where you find a dead body and it's you" and "it keeps you from having to watch Lost Highway")

'Twan (miccio), Thursday, 15 December 2005 21:53 (eighteen years ago) link

I had real trouble choosing between Saved! and Legally Blonde as my token teen movie, but in the end I chose the latter. As much as I liked Saved! I thought it was perhaps trying a bit too much to appeal to liberal sensibilities, whereas Legally Blonde was subtly feminist but never preached about it.

Tuomas (Tuomas), Thursday, 15 December 2005 21:53 (eighteen years ago) link

"it keeps you from having to watch Lost Highway"

This is true, actually.

Tuomas (Tuomas), Thursday, 15 December 2005 21:54 (eighteen years ago) link

the token 00s teen movie appears to be from the 90s

gabbneb (gabbneb), Thursday, 15 December 2005 21:55 (eighteen years ago) link

Though Lost Highway is better.

Tuomas (Tuomas), Thursday, 15 December 2005 21:55 (eighteen years ago) link

ethan has no love for gabrielle union? i damn near put mean girls on there too but started to think 'maybe let's not go that far'. mean girls probably is better, but bring it on has CHOREOGRAPHY and SHOWMANSHIP (although yes mean girls does have DEAR GOD JUST LOOK AT THEM).

most of those flix are last decade ethan, plus cant hardly wait suxx the only reason to watch it is to laff that half the cast ended up on six feet under, cruel intentions rules but the sequel's better, never saw the faculty, still somehow haven't seen varsity blues (i know i know).

j blount (papa la bas), Thursday, 15 December 2005 21:55 (eighteen years ago) link

oh god saved(!) is really funny, i forgot that shit! legally blonde was aight w/ some classic jokes but it draggedddddddd

zzzzzzzzz, Thursday, 15 December 2005 21:56 (eighteen years ago) link

The best of those films weren't 00s, Ethan - Election is particular. I had Legally Blonde higher on my shortlist than Bring It On, in fact.

Martin Skidmore (Martin Skidmore), Thursday, 15 December 2005 21:57 (eighteen years ago) link

pretty sure the faculty was '99. i remember a spin from around then with jordana brewster on the cover.

jaymc (jaymc), Thursday, 15 December 2005 21:58 (eighteen years ago) link

anyway i dont hate bring it on by any means, its a great movie!! this is just the same kinda bewilderment i have when dudes pick like supreme clientele as a token rap album

zzzzzzzzz, Thursday, 15 December 2005 21:58 (eighteen years ago) link

and actually, I mean I didn't want to have debates with friends like the ones I had after Darko and Mulholland. Those two and Ghost World told me I needed to avoid the youth-oriented arthouse for awhile.

'Twan (miccio), Thursday, 15 December 2005 21:59 (eighteen years ago) link

Mean Girls I think was trying too much, I think. It felt like a more politically correct version of Saved!.

Tuomas (Tuomas), Thursday, 15 December 2005 21:59 (eighteen years ago) link

I didn't like Saved or Mean Girls that much. They both went for a weird place where they tried to be subversive, but also completely mainstream and lived up to genre conventions. The comedy was never biting enough and the endings blah.

I prefer something like Election or Can't Hardly Wait (or 10 Things I Hate About You or the ballet movie with the girl from 10 Things or...) that stick with one direction.

Erick Dampier is better than Shaq (miloaukerman), Thursday, 15 December 2005 22:00 (eighteen years ago) link

saved is fucking awful ethan! i can't believe you liked that shit, dorky smug blue state 'xians aren't real xians', they totally wasted mandy moore (she was funnier in the same role on entourage), ugh ugh ugh, that thing only showed in athens cuz of stipe. seriously i still got some residual love for early hal hartley, but if you see martin donovan run the other way.

j blount (papa la bas), Thursday, 15 December 2005 22:01 (eighteen years ago) link

ooh 10 things was pretty good

j blount (papa la bas), Thursday, 15 December 2005 22:01 (eighteen years ago) link

I might've actually liked Donnie Darko if it hadn't all the sci-fi bullshit. Great athmosphere and acting ruined by fanboy geekery.

Tuomas (Tuomas), Thursday, 15 December 2005 22:01 (eighteen years ago) link

i didnt realize yall just meant 00s - havent even read the first 2/3rds of this thread!! anyway american pie was 2001 (saw it 3 times at beechwood) so thatd be my "token" pick, with additional props to loser and, i dunno, jeepers creepers? final destination?

zzzzzzzz, Thursday, 15 December 2005 22:02 (eighteen years ago) link

haha blount i thought saved was really funny, it didnt seem smug when i saw it w/ a teen movie audience & lots of the jokes were only funny if you grew up thick with evangelicals

zzzzzzzz, Thursday, 15 December 2005 22:03 (eighteen years ago) link

teen movie audience = teens

zzzzzzzz, Thursday, 15 December 2005 22:03 (eighteen years ago) link

and cmon election's not a teenflick really (it's about matthew broderick more than anyone else) and legally blonde's not a teenflick at all - she's in law school for christs sake!

american pie is totally 90s cuz i remember this girl in that catpower ripoff band that hasn't spoken to me this decade cuz i once suggested maybe she should pursue other interests besides music once told me when road trip was shooting on campus that she saw stifler on campus. the sequels are this decade though.

j blount (papa la bas), Thursday, 15 December 2005 22:07 (eighteen years ago) link

debates with friends like the ones I had after Darko and Mulholland. Those two and Ghost World told me I needed to avoid the youth-oriented arthouse

Are you talking about a specific arthouse? Cuz I don't see any of those films as pitched at an age group, certainly not GW or MD esp (in fact, I think they're all better apprec'd by over-30s).

'Twan (miccio), Thursday, 15 December 2005 22:08 (eighteen years ago) link

The one thing I didn't like about Saved! that even with it's supposed subversiness the girl had to keep her baby - though I guess it fitted with the character, her being a devout Christian and all. Anyway, it seems like every time in an American mainstream movie someone wants to get an abortion, she either A) changes her mind at the last moment, or B) her life is ruined and she can't forget what she did even 10 years after. Has there ever been a movie whereone someone gets an abortion, griefs for a time, and gets over it?

Tuomas (Tuomas), Thursday, 15 December 2005 22:08 (eighteen years ago) link

'Twan (miccio), Thursday, 15 December 2005 22:15 (eighteen years ago) link

the voice had a thing about how almost noone has abortions in pop culture anymore (bigups to claire on six feet under!), how at most the more transgressive shows might go as far as show someone considering it but then breaking down and going 'i can't do it - i've made up my mind! i'm keeping my baby!', i got kinda annoyed when nip/tuck pulled this shit the other night (although i was kinda amused they had her schedule her abortion for xmas eve, at night no less - yeah, that's plausible).

My impression in the UK is that there are far MORE foreign language films in normal cinemas (i.e. not explicitly arthouse places) than ever before. There have surely been far more foreign language hits in recent years than the close-to-zero hit rate in previous decades. Perhaps this isn't true in the US, I wouldn't know.

JSA isn't one of them, really, but I think part of it comes down to this - the foreign films that come to the states come to the states to please the art house crowd; a lot of gen-y college educated people find art house cinema rather dull as of late, and would prefer something actiony, pacey, or as I would call it "well-executed" like Spider-Man 2 rather than Bad Education, by a long shot.

If they brought shit like CASSHERN and IMMORTEL to the little art house in my neighborhood I'd hella go, but mainland china epics, american indies and eurowhatever is so frequently disappointing of late I just can't be bothered.

You know what was pretty fuckin' good, that wasn't on the list, DAS EXPERIMENT.

Completely right. I've probably missed some good films that came through, just because I don't even bother checking the weekly listings for my local art-houses (two Magnolia theatres and an Angelika, the Magnolias are heavy with shit I can see at any 30-plex and the Angelika is loaded with gay-themed films. Nothing wrong with that, but most of them seem to have been produced entirely because they were gay-themed and that's a helluva niche market.)

I could see a lot more foreign films through Netflix and DVDs, but I've finally broke down and admitted that I just don't like movies as much on a small screen. Even when I love something, being on my couch, with my little TV or computer, I get too many distractions. Nothing replaces a good cinema experience.

Erick Dampier is better than Shaq (miloaukerman), Friday, 16 December 2005 21:50 (eighteen years ago) link

Fundamentally, the act of watching a film is dictated by its efilmerality; considering rockist tendencies like watching a film in a single uninterrupted sitting, there is far less flexibility to the watching experience than with other media. TV has commercial breaks, books have chapters and no preconceived notion of how much you're supposed to read at a time. I've lost my original point, but film needs to be entertaining first, though "entertaining" here is a vague and catchall term I'm using -- you might say "engaging" instead.

I can't ever manage to read the words and focus on the images on the screen at the same time, so it always feels incomplete in one way or the other. Or, at the very least its a slightly less coherent experience than watching an english language film.

Also foriegn films tend to play in the arthouse theaters, which are always small and uncomfortable with bad sound systems. thats no fun.

Short answer: Pauline Kael.

I really shouldn't bite here, but Pauline Kael loved and promoted tons of foreign films. What exactly are you getting at?

'Twan (miccio), Saturday, 17 December 2005 07:02 (eighteen years ago) link

Kael never, I believe, reviewed a Fassbinder film.

I dunno what arthouses are generally like outside NYC; I'm sure their dodgy budgets means technical problems, but if it's a challenging and worthy film, you put up with stuff. I saw the third LOTR perfectly projected with a rapt crowd at Lincoln Center and felt grouchy throughout.

Dr Morbius (Dr Morbius), Saturday, 17 December 2005 17:53 (eighteen years ago) link

I really shouldn't bite here, but Pauline Kael loved and promoted tons of foreign films. What exactly are you getting at?

Maybe early on, but by the late 70s she almost exclusively supported American "New Hollywood" shit that had felt the influence of post-war Euro cinema but, more importantly, the American filmmakers championed by la politique des auteurs. (This isn't to say that there weren't individual non-American films she supported, but she certainly covered less and less world cinema--this is position is still v. evident at The New Yorker).

I don't really think she soley deserves the blame for lack of interest (and lack of availability (in theaters and the press) is really the main problem) in world cinema, but much of it has to do with the kind of provincial attitudes she fostered.

C0L1N B... (C0L1N B...), Sunday, 18 December 2005 17:14 (eighteen years ago) link

Who told you that? What work of hers makes her seem more indictative of these 'provinical attitudes' than the majority of american critics? It seems arbtirary and ridiculous to single her out for a trait she's not even particularly indicative of.

'Twan (miccio), Sunday, 18 December 2005 17:22 (eighteen years ago) link

It's true that she reviewed fewer foreign films as she got older and frail and was no longer able to hunt down movies for herself, but when so many critics can't look farther than 'Il Postino' it seems bizarre to accuse her of 'fostering' this quality in American cinematic appreciation.

'Twan (miccio), Sunday, 18 December 2005 17:26 (eighteen years ago) link

Who told you that?
There's a nice dialogue between Rosenbaum and Natasa Durovicova at the end of Movie Mutations that touches on this and a number of others have written on the topic, but I've read plenty of Kael's writing and it's pretty evident that she cared much less about world cinema when De Palma, Peckinpah, Coppola et al started producing moderately sophisticated American spectacle.

I don't think the "majority of American critics" is a very good standard with which to judge someone's openness to world cinema.

I don't have a single work for you, I'll look through For Keeps later and pull quotes if you want, but her focus became very American-centric later in her career (and this is taken to its logical extreme by self-confessed Paulettes like David Denby).

C0L1N B... (C0L1N B...), Sunday, 18 December 2005 17:36 (eighteen years ago) link

So Americans became less interested in foreign film when Pauline Kael got excited about American filmmakers in the 70s. I think its a bit of a leap.

Il Postino came out way after Kael stopped writing--you're talking about critics working now.
Kael didn't have to hunt anything down she was based in San Francisco and New York during the high-point of American awareness of world cinema.
Again, I'm not soley blaming Kael, my answer above was pithy, but I do think the attitude that Morbius was describing and the attitude that a film must be first-and-foremost "entertaining" owe a lot to her (even if her actual writing was occasionally a little more nuanced).

C0L1N B... (C0L1N B...), Sunday, 18 December 2005 17:40 (eighteen years ago) link

Admittedly, I wasn't around in the pre-Star Wars era, but this seems like a big accusation to throw at someone because they raved about the Godfather. And she reviewed plenty of foreign films! For Keeps is a selective look at her work, not a complete bibliography.

So Americans became less interested in foreign film when Pauline Kael got excited about American filmmakers in the 70s. I think its a bit of a leap.

It's not merely the championing of American films, but the notion that once Americans started making use of New Wave devices, there was no longer any need to actually see New Wave films (and certainly no reason to pay attention to contemporary world cinema).

C0L1N B... (C0L1N B...), Sunday, 18 December 2005 17:47 (eighteen years ago) link

did she ever say that you shouldn't pay attention to contemporary world cinema?

Admittedly, I wasn't around in the pre-Star Wars era, but this seems like a big accusation to throw at someone because they raved about the Godfather.

She was the most well-known American film critic writing!

And she reviewed plenty of foreign films! For Keeps is a selective look at her work, not a complete bibliography.

I know that, and I've read stuff of hers that's not in For Keeps, it's the just only one I still own.

I don't really like Kael at all and, as I have repeated, I'm not soley blaming her. I think much of this has to do with the Paulettes and what others took from Kael's writing--which was admittedly a little more nuanced. But I don't think it's unfair to associate her with an attitude that largely bears her impress.

C0L1N B... (C0L1N B...), Sunday, 18 December 2005 17:53 (eighteen years ago) link

I mean one of her most famous pieces of the late part of her career was about why the American movie system is totally fucked! She hated on those American would-be-auteurs before most of her peers. I learned about many foreign films by reading her work - to accuse her of promoting ignorance is wrong-headed. Though, yes, she did like 'entertaining' films.

'Twan (miccio), Sunday, 18 December 2005 17:54 (eighteen years ago) link

kael started off almost exclusively pro-world cinema - "i lost it at the movies" contains only ONE rave review of an american film ("lolita," tho she does praise "on the waterfront" and a few others with reservations) and loads of enthusiastic, brilliant reviews of films like "the golden coach," "fires on the plain," and "jules and jim." she spent the first 15 years of her career writing about what was WRONG with american movies; who could blame her for getting excited when films like "the godfather" started coming out?

I just got out the Complete New Yorker set to check something -- Kael's first piece for the magazine (about old movies on TV) was in July, 1967, and her first review was in October '67. (Bonnie and Clyde, FYI.) Here's a question for people who are more familiar with Kael than I am (ie everybody) -- did she have any fame as a film critic before starting to write for the New Yorker, or was that her first big exposure?

I do feel guilty for getting any perverse amusement out of it (Rock Hardy), Sunday, 18 December 2005 19:28 (eighteen years ago) link

Erick Dampier is better than Shaq (miloaukerman), Monday, 19 December 2005 03:28 (eighteen years ago) link

I take it my nominations of How's Your News and Spring Forward were snipped from the ballot because IMDB lists them both as 1999 films. It's up to you, Erick, but I'd make the case for both as 2000s films, even if no one else cares.

Spring Forward's only '99 screening was at the Toronto Film Festival in September, and it didn't get released on DVD until September 2002. It really made the festival rounds in the 2000s.

As for How's Your News, according to IMDB, the first screening of the film was actually in 2001 at the same festival. IMDB might have the date screwed up because the project was based on a TV series that began earlier.

Pete Scholtes (Pete Scholtes), Wednesday, 21 December 2005 05:48 (eighteen years ago) link

I.e.

Arguably:
Spring Forward (Gilroy, 2000)

Somewhat less arguably:
How's Your News? (Bradford, 2001)

Pete Scholtes (Pete Scholtes), Wednesday, 21 December 2005 05:54 (eighteen years ago) link

Yeah, IMDB had the last call on dates. I didn't want to go into the release details of each and every one and correct them, it would only effect a small number of films (which, by and large, wouldn't garner many votes) and some would have been in the '90s and '00s poll (The Virgin Suicides as mentioned on the other thread).

HYN appears to be a screwup on IMDB's part, so votes for it would be OK. But anything that had a festival screening or anywhere, IMDB counts it as that year.

Addition:
How's Your News (Bradford, 2001)

Erick Dampier is better than Shaq (miloaukerman), Wednesday, 21 December 2005 06:00 (eighteen years ago) link

Cool. Rather than make a tenth nomination, let me just say, Spring Forward would have been close to my number one. So would the original The Vanishing in the '90s poll. Filmmakers should never premiere a film in the waining months of a decade.

Pete Scholtes (Pete Scholtes), Wednesday, 21 December 2005 23:22 (eighteen years ago) link

I don't see nearly enough non-English-speaking films. But it doesn't help when people hype transgressively soulless crap like Baise Moi and Irreversible and Fat Girl, or skilled failures like In the Mood for Love (which puts me in the mood for sleep) and Bus 174 (which plays on the basest sense of reality-TV dread)...

Pete Scholtes (Pete Scholtes), Thursday, 22 December 2005 00:29 (eighteen years ago) link

I think the problem is that the non-American films that get most hyped are often exactly the "controversial" ones, which often suck regardless - or because - of their "shocking" content - Irreversible and Ichi the Killer are fine examples on this poll. The more quiet yet lovely films that have little controversial in them - such as Look at Me, The Waiting List, or Kitchen Stories (all of which are in my personal top 5) - get far less attention.

Tuomas (Tuomas), Thursday, 22 December 2005 10:24 (eighteen years ago) link

Hmm, The Waiting List probably didn't get much attention in the US also because it's made in Cuba, and it's sorta pro-socialism (though not pro-Castro in any way, more like pro-socialism-as-an-unreached-dream).

Results may take a couple of weeks to formulate. I can't find which box I put my Office v.X disc in, so I've either got to find it or break down and use OpenOffice.

Voting for the same film twice is cheating! I think.
Btw I spelt Belleville Rendezvous wrong when I nominated it, a mistake that's being repeated all through the thread. Grr.
