ILX TOP 50 FILMS OF 2000-2004 NOMINATIONS THREAD

I'm going to be slower than Charles, so perhaps this should get started a little in advance while he gives us the other results.

As this will be the Top 50 of a half-decade, you only get half as many votes, with the first couple weighted heavier.

Scoring will be as follows:
1 - 35
2 - 30
3 - 25
4 - 22
5 - 19
6 - 16
7 - 13
8 - 10
9 - 8
10 - 6
11 - 5
12 - 4
13 - 3
14 - 2
15 - 1

This will be a closed ballot - each ILXor can nominate up to five films, no changes once they've been posted. If there aren't enough nominees after a couple of weeks I'll open it up further.

IMDB is the final judge of when something came out. Whenever voting starts, I'll put up the gmail address for ballots.

Nominations close Wed. the 21st.

i liked the mise-en-scene of downtown L.A. and I thought it was beautifully directed (plus featured rather good music), and it gets points for being really fucking bizarre.

it wouldn't place in the top ten for me, but i like it and of course no one else will nominate it!

Which means my four most obvious adds would be:

2046
Far from Heaven
Cowards Bend the Knee
The White Diamond

Dr Morbius (Dr Morbius), Saturday, 10 December 2005 21:12 (eighteen years ago) link

IMDB bases it on the earliest national release, I believe - so if an American film came out in 1999 but elsewhere in 2000 it wouldn't be eligible, but if an Asian film came out in Hong Kong in 2003 but not in the US until 2005 it would be eligible.

Erick Dampier is better than Shaq (miloaukerman), Saturday, 10 December 2005 21:14 (eighteen years ago) link

I assume wehn we say IMDB is the "final judge" we're referring to the date next to the movie on its main page. but that date is the earliest release of the movie, in any country, and apparently without regard to whether it was a regular run. so if something showed at CAnnes in 99, but did not open in the US or UK until 2000, the date on the main page at IMDB will be 1999. but if you take the trouble to look at the release dates on IMDB, you'll see that it's not a "1999 movie" as far as we were concerned at hte time.

gabbneb (gabbneb), Saturday, 10 December 2005 21:22 (eighteen years ago) link

Yeah, the number after the name is the final arbiter. I didn't know they based any of them on festival showings, I never looked that closely.

Erick Dampier is better than Shaq (miloaukerman), Saturday, 10 December 2005 21:27 (eighteen years ago) link

That is true, gabb. I think I pointed it out when we voted on The Virgin Suicides in the '90s poll -- it played 3 festivals in '99 and wasn't released anywhere til April 2000 -- but that's how we've played it all along.

Dr Morbius (Dr Morbius), Saturday, 10 December 2005 21:30 (eighteen years ago) link

maybe it's unique to the movie (and expressive of Jarmusch's intentions), but Ghost Dog apparently played during 99 and 2000 in (non-festival showings?) in France, Switzerland, Belgium, Hungary, Japan, Taiwan, Norway, Germany, Italy, Spain, Brazil, Poland, Denmark and Sweden before beginning a regular run in the US

gabbneb (gabbneb), Saturday, 10 December 2005 21:37 (eighteen years ago) link

White Diamond is already up there without the "The," FYI...

Pete Scholtes, Saturday, 10 December 2005 22:05 (eighteen years ago) link

What about Downfall is a 2005 release in most places bar Germany. (I'm sure there are others.)
