How do you do screen grabs in OSX, Nicl

Ed (dali), Friday, 14 February 2003 18:13 (twenty-three years ago)

You just do the same thing as you did in OS9 -- Apple Shift 3! But they're saved as PDF files on your desktop. I use freeware called Kunvert to make pdf into jpeg.

Now tell me how I can fly too!

At the moment I have a black and white photo of Edinburgh Castle and the Grassmarket, that I took myself. Being a geek, I have a background-randomiser that picks from a selection of BW photos I've taken over the years.

At work, I just have a single one: a beach and ruined village on the Hebridean island of Taransay. It's also one I took myself.

caitlin (caitlin), Friday, 14 February 2003 20:21 (twenty-three years ago)

Spencer-- I yanked it off of somewhere on detroityes.com (I really wish I remembered where).... It's such an amazing pic to see actual PEOPLE (those little black specs) in pre-riots downtown Detroit. My parents always used that train photo until they got a mac.

Me, I've got a photorealistic illustration of a Ford GT-40 (probably the REEEEEEEMIXED 21st century version) in Gulf baby blue/orange racing livery. It's just the car and this huge black void of a background, which is striking. Sadly, some website's logo intrudes in the corner, but I HATH PHOTOSHOP.

on that note, i just watched 'billy crystal: don't get me started', on a recommendation from someone at work. featuring a few of the usual suspects - rob reiner, christopher guest, eugene levy. it was good... not great, but good :)

the other day i did mess around with skinning windows. i found one that goes on with WindowBlinds, called b0sumi, that i liked. unfortunately it made my spreadsheet stop working so i bagged it. but you could "roll up" windows by double clicking on them, which was nifty

Oh, I can answer that for you!

That's Audrey Marnay.
She's very unique looking, huh?

She's probably most well known for her Nina Ricci "Peace On Earth" angel ads, but I first found out about her through the Versace/Versus "Renaissance" ads.

Both are on this website :

http://perso.club-internet.fr/yangabin/modeles/audreymarnay/pubaudrey.html

So, what's on my desktop?
Not Audrey, but a picture of Turfan, an ancient stop on the Silk Road, in a remote part of China ... Very harsh weather there, but very beautiful in spite of it.

Er, um. Thanks for the affection, but could we just be friends instead?

*smiles bashfully and backs away*

> Do you have a link to the picture on your desktop, stripey?

Nope. Just remembered where it was.
(Well, with some help from my friend Google)

stripey, Thursday, 26 June 2003 20:37 (twenty-two years ago)

On my iBook is a picture of a road in Saskatchewan stretching out to nowhere, which Bryan took.

On my work PC is a drawing of some pumpkin-headed people picketing in front of a smiley, wavey guy who is part train. The pumpkin-headed people carry a sign that says "Make pancakes not babies" and they are about to cross onto a spilled can of "stroop", which I assume is Dutch for syrup. Erik drew it.

Thanks, ILE!

> Do you have a link to the picture on your desktop, stripey?

Oh, wait a minute -- I think you're confusing my desktop with _Momus's_ desktop. My desktop has a picture of Turfan, not of Audrey! Momus's desktop has Audrey! If you want the picture that Momus has for his desktop, you'll have to ask him instead.

I only know that one Audrey website, if it's not there, I can't really help you beyond that.

You'll just have to bribe Momus. (He might respond more enthusiastically to your kisses, too!)

;)

stripey, Thursday, 26 June 2003 20:50 (twenty-two years ago)

ha "I kiss you so much right now" = you have just introduced me to the name of the most beautiful woman in the world, thank you!

*saying that though, backs away sheepishly from himself*

No, I'd like a pic of Turfan too. (I just hunted down, like the creep I am, loads of Audrey pictures. She is extremely pretty.)

Unfortunately, the site I got it from seems to have disappeared! :(

She was a pro-photographer who bicycled through the Silk Road taking pictures along the way. They were amazing pictures! I wish I'd written her name down! Oh well, she'll probably show up in National Geographic magazine. You'll see the Turfan photo then. Sorry!

(got to get back to work now - bye!)

Actually, I just used that program to convert a .wma file to .mp3 -- it was actually a file I'd dl'ed of Coconut Rough's "Sierra Leone". I've also found that when you've got Windows Explorer running and hover the mouse over the names of various music and video files, it'll tell you some fairly detailed information on those files, which is one of the added benefits of this program. I've never actually used it to rip CDs, though. But wow, Ned, thanks for the inspiration! *laughs*

Trayce (trayce), Friday, 20 February 2004 04:37 (twenty-two years ago)

As a desktop motif, it's probably hard to see icons on. I'll be doing something along those lines before too long as one way of navigating my in-home digital media library jukebox setup, though.

Stuart (Stuart), Friday, 20 February 2004 05:11 (twenty-two years ago)

Trayce (trayce), Friday, 20 February 2004 05:18 (twenty-two years ago)

That's the thing -- I don't fit it to my desktop, so there's plenty of black space to the left for the icons to be visible.

just a solid background in a moderately dull green. finding icons against a busy photographic background seems like more work than necessary .

my real current desktop is that image, covered with dozens of icons, mostly screenshots of extremely dumb things that i then posted on ILX, extremely dumbly. i used to be a clean desktop/zero icon/inbox zero kind of guy. now i am only an inbox zero kind of guy. :(

Mine is this bodhisattva of infinite compassion, snapped at the V&A museum. I like his informal style - as if he's taking a break from formal meditation in the lotus position, and just hanging out on a sunday afternoon with tourists and locals sheltering from the rain.
