Also who will have the first Leopard desktop?

Muertos this Sunday...the celebration in touristy-town Mesilla that Cruces surrounds is kind of a yuppie embarrassment, chicks in borderland studies programs acting very self-important about their costumes. And a Frida Kahlo lookalike contest. All makes me a little sad somehow.

Whoa. That might just be heaviest desktop I've EVER seen. Talk about beauty. Whoa.

BIG HOOS aka the steendriver, Saturday, 27 October 2007 21:16 (eighteen years ago)

You've never seen The Big Lebowski?

StanM, Saturday, 27 October 2007 21:20 (eighteen years ago)

(i.e. yes, it is)

StanM, Saturday, 27 October 2007 21:23 (eighteen years ago)

I have still never seen The Big Lebowski. This despite the fact that two guys showed up dressed as the Dude at a Halloween party I once threw.

It is a rendering of John Goodman as Walter Sobchak in The Big Lebowski. It has been by desktop since the John Goodman thread got my attention.

And I HIGHLY (pun intended, although I'm at work) recommend renting the Big Lebowski asap. It is worth three or four viewings immediately - it might take one that many times to catch on to the Coen's writing brilliance.

"His name's Lebowski? That's your name, Dude."

I'd like to try this as my desktop image, but I need a bigger version to expand it to desktop size (clone brush & so on) - does anyone know who it's by?

indeed - it's by that atelier, but that's where that picture came from :-)

Nevermind, I suck at graphics and thought I could just mirror the right half of the skull to get rid of the text thing, but then the background would be mirrored too & I'm way too lazy to fiddle with this any longer.

ooh pretty. where is that?
it's on one of pennsylvania's abandoned turnpikes. i haven't visited; i stole it from a website that tells the whole story. in short, in the '50s, the state built a turnpike with a series of tunnels and later rebuilt sections of the turnpike to bypass the tunnels entirely. the tunnels and various other sections are still there, though. spooky.

derrrick, Tuesday, 30 October 2007 02:05 (eighteen years ago)

it really looks like pennsylvania. i guessed that or upstate new york or connecticut.

get bent, Tuesday, 30 October 2007 02:17 (eighteen years ago)

i stole it from a website

Link plz.

Isn't it in Pennsylvania where they had to abandon an entire town because of gases coming up from the mines? It's still there too, all blocked off.

Pleasant Plains, Tuesday, 30 October 2007 02:27 (eighteen years ago)

i think that this is the site that i found the photo at. if all of the NW US is this lovely i'd love to visit.

the modern ghost town is a really exciting thing!

Jena, Tuesday, 30 October 2007 07:06 (eighteen years ago)

actually, that was fun. worked out that you had to resize it by a factor of 2n where n is odd for the best results (you need a diagonal in the pattern which you don't get with multiples of 4, which was my first guess). also had real trouble getting the stripes to line up as gimp doesn't seem to start tiling patterns starting in the corners like you'd think was obvious, had to keep shifting second pattern left a pixel at a time until they matched.

http://www.koogy.clara.co.uk/lovecraft_1280x1024.png (only 18k!)

koogs, Tuesday, 30 October 2007 09:05 (eighteen years ago)

FANTASTIC! thanks!

StanM, Tuesday, 30 October 2007 09:12 (eighteen years ago)

How bad is the headache this probably gave you? :-)

StanM, Tuesday, 30 October 2007 09:14 (eighteen years ago)

it is a bit of a headfuck, yes. sat here last night with an a4 printout trying to see where the pixels were, where the stripes changed direction basically, and you somehow can't do it looking directly at the image but by glancing away and back again quickly it's a lot easer. reminds me a lot of bridget riley.

i am now going to abuse this technique for birthday cards, christmas cards etc. wonder how it'll look in red and green... 8)

my desktop pic, btw, is a 1280x1024 chunk of that aurora / shooting star picture someone posted on the astronomy picture of the day thread.

awes

Oystein is that Gutsy you're running above?

BIG HOOS aka the steendriver, Tuesday, 6 November 2007 16:15 (eighteen years ago)

Yes indeed. It's actually my first go with Ubuntu, and it's quite the charmer. It was up and running fully without forcing me to go into a shell (or boot in text-mode) a single time. That's a first for me; I'm used to Linux-distros hating every damn component in every cursed computer I've ever owned.
