I was born in 1955, in the middle of the boomer years, and came of age in the 70s. The media called us the “me generation”. They used that label because they thought we were spoiled, but I was sure it was just because we expressed a confidence they didn’t think we should feel. I knew I was gay at a very young age and that I was going to do everything in my power to escape my conservative rural community.

Dan S, Sunday, 19 February 2023 01:49 (one year ago) link

"1980 but weirdly I'm 96 years old

― waiting for a czar to fall (Neanderthal)"

that's just queer time. personally, as a queer woman, i measure my age in terms of the lyrics to the boards of canada song "aquarius", which means i'm seventy-four this year. i'm looking forward to turning sixty-seven in a couple months.

"I was born in 1955, in the middle of the boomer years, and came of age in the 70s. The media called us the “me generation”. They used that label because they thought we were spoiled, but I was sure it was just because we expressed a confidence they didn’t think we should feel. I knew I was gay at a very young age and that I was going to do everything in my power to escape my conservative rural community.

― Dan S"

i was just writing about the "me generation" on my blog the other day, my take is that wolfe was observing a genuine phenomenon but that part of being queer is being, you know, not like the others. i also think that calling narcissism a _generational_ phenomenon is overstating it a little. my mom is definitely a woman of her generation, but she's also her mother's daughter, you know?

There is highly embarrassing evidence of my teenage presence here dating back to '03 (e.g. my first post was to ask Momus to rate my livejournal) well over half a lifetime for me and I am so grateful that this place still exists and looks exactly the same, ilx is so good thank you to everyone involved

We did "how old are you" polls on the same day in January in 2008, 2011, and 2016. Each time the median age corresponded to a 1979 (or very early 1980) birthday. It would be interesting if the median age has increased since then.

I like the expression "long in the tooth". It is an acknowledgement that we all clench our teeth when we sleep, driving our upper teeth into the maxilla where bone is resorbed, and with it our upper gums recede over time

I have been wearing a night guard to arrest this, it is uncomfortable and creates too much saliva, and I've only been able to wear it when I wake up around midnight and am mostly asleep so can put it in

this is an old person post, but many of you will also face this

I'm happy to see a couple of 1955 babies uncloak themselves. I was born late in 1954 (November), so they are nearly indistinguishable from my age. Once you've crept this far into old age a matter of months is trivial. I still hope to see someone older than me 'fess up. I keep thinking a lurker beyond my years will show themself. Hasn't happened, yet, but it could. In theory.

I think I followed a link from rockcritics.com sometime in 2002. It coincided with me moving to NYC, so I spent a lot of time lurking and then eventually posting on NYC threads. I especially loved the Noize board in its ridiculous heyday. (I haven't looked at it in forever, so props to those keeping it going.)

I randomly Googled Laurie Anderson's 'O Superman' one day and a thread came up. In fact I'm surprised at how often ILM threads come up in my Google searches

Started a blog in autumn 2001, which led to me hopping around people’s blogrolls, which led me to here. First posted here January 2002, on a Kevin Ayers thread.

I think I came to this joint to create a thread praising Dirty Work.

Malevolent Arugula (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Wednesday, 22 February 2023 10:17 (one year ago) link

looking it up, it looks like my earliest post is in 2005, which is earlier than I remember. I came here from another music discussion message board and ultimately found I liked it more here than there, but I think that took a couple of years, so for a long time I would just check things out here every once in a while.

(This place always seemed a bit intimidating because everyone seemed to be so knowledgeable about seemingly everything while I never really developed a good vocabulary for explaining why a certain piece of music or whatever else is amazing or bad. I just like some stuff and dislike other stuff for the most part without totally figuring out why.)

I think only around 2010 or so did this place become my main messageboard hangout, though always more as a lurker than a poster.
