ILX All-Time Film and Morbsies Poll: Voting And Campaigning Thread (Ballots Due Like I Dunno Maybe March 1, 2021?)

As promised in Pretend you have a ballot for the 2022 edition of Sight & Sound's top 10 movies of all time list, balloting period is now open for ILX's all-time greatest film and movies poll in honor of Dr. Morbius, who was ILX's biggest fan of ballot polls and ILX movie taste!

NOMINATIONS: https://pastebin.com/LwvpYQ1A (Roughly 1,750 candidates listed; no, I don't know why pastebin flagged the list as NSFW.)

BALLOTING: You are allowed up to 25 ranked or unranked creme de la creme picks, and then an optional 100 unranked honorable mentions that will be weighted at a lower standing.

The balloting period is longer than standard, to give people time to catch up on blind spots.

I will help to keep this thread bumped because I heartily endorse this worthy poll/Morbs memorial.

I'll vote on this but I think I'll need to get a bit drunk to do so. So many great movies that won't make it.

wasdnuos (abanana), Monday, 14 December 2020 23:21 (three years ago) link

so many godawful ones that will

Uptown Top Scamping (Noodle Vague), Monday, 14 December 2020 23:27 (three years ago) link

unlike Crank High Voltage, which will make it and is great

wasdnuos (abanana), Monday, 14 December 2020 23:31 (three years ago) link

i don't...disagree?

i mean this madness is why i don't vibe with polls much

Uptown Top Scamping (Noodle Vague), Monday, 14 December 2020 23:37 (three years ago) link

High Voltage definitely in my top 3 "films that inexplicably fucked with my soul" list

Crank 2 placing is the ultimate tribute to Morbs tbh.

no, he could be crank, but he was not an angry teenage boy

Dan S, Tuesday, 15 December 2020 03:47 (three years ago) link

I wrote down almost a hundred films I want to vote for in this, but organizing them and squeezing in others isn't going to be easy

Dan S, Tuesday, 15 December 2020 04:42 (three years ago) link

Can someone remind this noob of the procedure with these things? Can I vote for things that aren’t on the nomination list and if so do they automatically get added to the list when I do?

Alba, Wednesday, 16 December 2020 00:19 (three years ago) link

Yeah. The nominations phase is just to get people’s brains storming. Ballots can have anything on then

Counting my own and the Morbs ballot I'm making for him, I've now received 5 ballots!

Am using the opportunity of data entry to clean up entries and remove doubles (and insert ballot picks that weren't in the initial nominations). For some reason Pastebin things there's something pornographic in the master list, so I can't update it there. I'll periodically paste the updated list here to bump throughout the rest of winter.

well god knows i forgot to nominate anything for this, i’ll try and put a ballot together anyway

mellon collie and the infinite bradness (BradNelson), Monday, 4 January 2021 17:42 (three years ago) link

Oh and a reminder that your ballots can include up to 25 “tier one” movies (ranked, unranked, or a combo thereof). And the an additional up to 100 “honorable mention” picks, which get significantly fewer points but, hey, if you wanna push some movie’s chances go for it.

No pressure, but if those of you voting at all have the wherewithal to rank out your top tier 25, please do, or we might end up with lots and lots of ties.

On average, this critic grades 8.3 points lower than other critics (Eric H.), Tuesday, 5 January 2021 16:48 (three years ago) link

the up to 100 honorable mentions are unranked or can also be ranked?

٩(͡๏̯͡๏)۶ (Camaraderie at Arms Length), Tuesday, 5 January 2021 16:53 (three years ago) link

No, those should just be unranked ... they're worth the same smaller amount of points whether you name 1 or 100.

Can someone remind this noob of the procedure with these things? Can I vote for things that aren’t on the nomination list and if so do they automatically get added to the list when I do?

Yeah. The nominations phase is just to get people’s brains storming. Ballots can have anything on then

Oh no, I’m not closing this thing until we have at least 30 to 40 ballots

I don't want to start another poll while one's still running, but we've only ever reached 30 ballots once in the yearly polls, so it might take a few years' accretion to hit 40 in this one!

devvvine, Thursday, 4 March 2021 13:25 (three years ago) link

I started putting a ballot together a while back and let it get away from me. Bummed that, since the nominations closed, I've already seen one non-nominated film that should absolutely be on my ballot but I also wonder if there's any point in including it given the lack of nomination. I might need to pow-wow with my youth pastor on this one.

Stefan Twerkelle (Old Lunch), Thursday, 4 March 2021 13:39 (three years ago) link

just did a haphazard sweep of the noms and got a half-decent top 25 put together, so i guess i'm gonna vote

Can I do a write-in? if so, then I can come up with a 25

Oor Neechy, Thursday, 4 March 2021 16:52 (three years ago) link

if you read the above posts they will reveal that write-ins are extremely allowed and nigh-encouraged

mellon collie and the infinite bradness (BradNelson), Thursday, 4 March 2021 16:55 (three years ago) link

I've sent in a ballot. If Eric could let me know he received it, that would be great!

Oor Neechy, Thursday, 4 March 2021 20:11 (three years ago) link

probably futile and ridiculous to do any campaigning for such a massive and personal endeavor but i would like to encourage folks to see/revisit Peter Weir's Fearless (1993). not at the top of my list or anything but it'll be on there somewhere. a movie close to my heart and one i never hear anyone talk about ever.

Lavator Shemmelpennick, Thursday, 4 March 2021 20:58 (three years ago) link

It's very good, iirc. It's been a while.

Stefan Twerkelle (Old Lunch), Thursday, 4 March 2021 21:02 (three years ago) link

I did a Facebook countdown of favourite movies with two friends a decade ago, and--I checked back--one of them had Fearless at #12.

clemenza, Thursday, 4 March 2021 21:03 (three years ago) link

very cool, glad to hear i'm not the only one! one of the things i like about it is that it feels like an incredibly rare example of extreme vulnerable emotion in the context of relatively slick Hollywood production values. Jeff Bridges and Rosie Perez are both excellent, among each of their best.

Lavator Shemmelpennick, Thursday, 4 March 2021 21:48 (three years ago) link

The trouble with snarking at people for not succesfully scouring every single post (when they might be text fatigued from looking through a long list of things) in search of rules that might be better placed in say the OP is that this post now might look it's criticising the poll runner(s), which it is not.

Lotta mullet-adjacent dadhair in Weir's American films - Depardieu in Green Card, sunbleached Ford in Mosquito Coast. He even tried to fake one on Ed Harris with that beret.

My own personal issue with voting for a film that wasn't nominated is that it seems like a futile gesture in the context of a poll.

Sorry all. Been off the grid the last few days. I’ll update the list of who I’ve got ballots from this weekend and also update the overall list from pastebin, and RE paste the updated version here tho, yes, vote for whatever your heart wants.

NOMINATIONS: https://pastebin.com/LwvpYQ1A (Roughly 1,750 candidates listed; no, I don't know why pastebin flagged the list as NSFW.)

doesn't seem to work now? I've only ever seen about 38 movies and possibly want to celebrate about 11 of them, so no biggie except I feel noms list should perhaps be easier to access?

So out curiosity, what criteria are people using in putting ballots together? There's the old "favorite" vs. "best" conundrum, but also are folks deliberately aiming for, say, diversity across decades, nationalities, etc, or just, like, listing every Judd Apatow movie?

a man often referred to in the news media as the Duke of Saxony (tipsy mothra), Wednesday, 31 March 2021 17:47 (three years ago) link

I always list favourites, don't even think about what's important. I dropped a few old ones I've seen way too many times and replaced them with stuff I've come to love within the past five years.

Halfway there but for you, Wednesday, 31 March 2021 18:17 (three years ago) link

Another reason I'm waiting to collate (other than my work life just being insane lately) is so that we don't just have a series of 12-way ties, if at all possible. Only getting in excess of 25-30 ballots will hopefully ensure that won't happen.

Its a mix: There has got to be one from France, Japan, Iran then I go to continents. I'll get an extra Euro, one from East Asia and China/India, one from Latin America, one from Africa. There isn't one that's good enough from Oceania.

US will get one but its the 'joker in the pack' (proper good but people might wince at it), one doc, one experimental film. No silents because I've not seen enough.

25 challenging because of course you are forced to leave something out but in addition may actually forget some favorite, +100 hard because want to get in some of the missing favorites from the 25 as well as cover Everything Else: other films by favorite directors, more obscure stuff, or even stuff by all the big directors you couldn’t single out any films for to make the top 25 etc.

Ok i wasn't planning to do this (Morbius thought I didn't have the intellectual capacity to appreciate "The Master" because I said the Terrible Film Bridge Of Spies was a Terrible Film) but I might do it tomorrow just cus rewatching Svankmajer's Alice this deserves a number one vote from somebody, actually if I do this I'll put Stalker at 1, Alice at 2, fuck it I can definitely hit 25 with Lynch & Lynne Ramsey! Midnight Run top 10, Pain & Gain 23, Billy Liar 24, Georgy Girl 25. Kes 11. Fuck I'll prolly forget to do this. Manhunter 4ish. Dammit I'll do 25 tomorrow I promise but not the 100

parenthetically yours, (Karl Malone), Saturday, 15 May 2021 23:50 (two years ago) link

I’ve been trying to imagine the final entry in your countdown, Eric. Given your restriction to one film per director, so far there is still no Visconti, Tarkovsky, Fellini, Herzog, Scorcese, Wong, Truffaut, Chaplin, Ophuls, Wilder, Leone, Malick, or Satyajit Ray, among others. I have a couple of guesses but wouldn’t be surprised to be wildly off

FINE, Georgy Girl made 25, in fact I just stuck to those arbritray numbers I threw out last night and filled in the other spots with some other stuff. Giving this too much thought would be THE PATH TO MADNESS, so I messaged My Brother and asked him the 3rd best film of all time, then put that at 3. Eric, do I need to send mine again?

my tastes are pedestrian, i'm going to be embarrassed if i share my ballot

davey, Sunday, 30 May 2021 12:50 (two years ago) link

I’m not a big fan of sharing my ballot, partly for the reason Davey mentions but mainly because, on the basis of my own lack of interest in reading ballots, inflicting my own on others seems unfair.

Alba, Sunday, 30 May 2021 13:11 (two years ago) link

By pedestrian, you mean you voted for The Crossing Guard with Jack Nicholson? I voted for one film that has a great crossing-guard scene, but not that one.

No ballot shaming unless I see anime!

i could ramble on and on about how beautifully that movie uses glass as a motif. very neat that it was intended as a loop.

i am reminded that i'd like to read this book, "Shard Cinema" by Evan Calder Williams, which muses extensively on things (like glass) shattering and fragmenting on screen.

recently watched Jeanne-Pierre Melville's Army of Shadows for the first time and thought it was fantastic! If I were voting again I think I would put into my ballot in place of Le Samouraï

Dan S, Wednesday, 23 June 2021 01:59 (two years ago) link

Sorry, everyone: Playtime topped my "Geez, I hope this doesn't win" list. If it does, fine.

clemenza, Wednesday, 23 June 2021 02:03 (two years ago) link

I really like the earlier Tati films, especially Mon Oncle; found Playtime hit the same note over and over again. It's not really funny, either, which I'm sure some people think is the point (or beside the point).

Halfway there but for you, Wednesday, 23 June 2021 02:08 (two years ago) link

I don't know if I've ever had such a viscerally negative reaction to a revered film. Reverence that seems relatively recent--I found a site with a detailed breakdown of the 2002 S&S vote, and if that's accurate, it got 2 votes. What exactly happened after that?

The only time I faced a full-scale riot in my film class happened while showing Playtime.

They calmed down when I explained it's a dud as a comedy but a solid example of visual and sound design, use of long shot, of showing how America looked like in a post-World's Fair climate, etc.

but, clem, correct me if I'm wrong, you're not much of a fan of the sort of leisurely film that Pauline Kael made few exceptions for, right?

I don't know: I think I like/love lots of films that amble along (The Straight Story and Comfort and Joy immediately come to mind). You're probably onto something with "dud as a comedy but a solid example of visual and sound design"--I think I expected something funny, not painfully and skull-crushingly whimsical. The sound design drove me up the wall, mind you.

Almost all of the doubles mentioned upthread were Morbs ballot additions that I added at the last minute (minus Robot Monster), and most of them have been dealt with.

Is it too late to submit something?

Not at all. This poll remains an open-ended prospect indefinitely, but it's feeling increasingly likely that I won't actually close it until the end of spring or thereabouts.

also, RE: "no, I don't know why pastebin flagged the list as NSFW", is it because of Warhol's Blow Job?

― parenthetically yours, (Karl Malone), Saturday, May 15, 2021 7:55 AM (two months ago)

I had a pastebin list of songs flagged as NSFW and it turned out it was due to the presence of "You're a Queer One" from the Carousel soundtrack.

a couple of things i would have voted for weren't nominated, but that's my fault!

house (Nobuhiko Ôbayashi, 1977)
downfall (Oliver Hirschbiegel, 2004)

House is there as Hausu, it'll be in my unranked 100

oh shit! thank you! I will send an update to Eric and hope that it can count. I saw it for the first time recently and was blown away

― parenthetically yours, (Karl Malone), Saturday, May 15, 2021 9:23 AM (two months ago)

you can also vote for stuff that wasn't nominated

To Catch a Thief not nominated?

― Deicide at Chuck E. Cheese (PBKR), Saturday, May 15, 2021 11:03 PM (two months ago)

You can vote for it, nominations were just suggestions.

OK, I'm working on this today. It took me an hour just to delete the ones I hadn't seen. I got to Showgirls and said a silent apology to Eric as I hit the Delete key.

I tried not to look at that list at all if I could help it.

In any case, I am usually much more motivated to vote in a poll with this kind of turnout.

Almost... have my +100. Would be nice to have a list of just all the nominated directors to work with.

don't know if it helps, but here's the 101 top directors poll from a few years ago:

Would be nice to have a list of just all the nominated directors to work with.

at this point any vote for a "nominated" film should be stricken from the results

Ha, I get it. Almost done anyway, but thanks.

The nomination list is Forbidden (#403) for some reason. Is Eric's post from January the final noms list? Can't vote for anything not on it?

― g simmel, Thursday, May 27, 2021 6:52 PM (one month ago)

you can vote for whatever you'd like, nominations were intended as a jumping off point or to simply help you along

― Clay, Thursday, May 27, 2021 7:11 PM (one month ago)

I've not really looked at the moms list. I have a rough idea of favourites

Will finally start entering in the last-minute ballots into the spreadsheet this week, which means I might be nice and leave room for a few more.

when I think about the work involved in compiling these ballots, with no nomination list, I would not be surprised if it took quite a while

It would have been easier to throw a ballot together (in 40 minutes when Eric announced votes were closing) if we'd had a nomination list, for sure. Perhaps this should be considered for the 2021 version of the All-Time Film poll?

bobo honkin' slobo babe (sic), Tuesday, 20 July 2021 10:28 (two years ago) link

It’s certainly worth considering.
