Oldman as Churchill - There is a movie I'd pay not to watch, although I'm sure it will be a big hit with The Football Lads Alliance type crowds. Sometimes I think in post-brexit times every UK movie is just going to be a Dunkirk remake for the next decade.

Is that the new one by the director of Force Majeure? I liked FM, but the reviews I've read of this one (both positive and negative) make it sound fairly insufferable, I gotta say.

"Insufferable" is a good response to The Square. It tries to Say Something about inequality and the media outrage cycle, but gets bogged down in liberal cringe. And it reaffirms my belief that every movie that comes in at over 2 hours should be taken out of the director's hands and cut to 90 minutes.

I, Fanbrat (j.lu), Tuesday, 21 November 2017 02:51 (six years ago) link

Maybe Oscar will do us all the favor of giving all 5 best actor slots to actresses instead this year:

Fred Klinkenberg (Eric H.), Thursday, 30 November 2017 15:40 (six years ago) link

Not online yet, so the commentary that's so crucial isn't available yet, but here's John Waters' essential list for the year:

1. Baby Driver (Edgar Wright)
2. I, Olga Hepnarová (Petr Kazda, Tomáš Weinreb)
3. The Strange Ones (Christopher Radcliff, Lauren Wolkstein)
4. Nocturama (Bertrand Bonello)
5. Wonderstruck (Todd Haynes)
6. Graduation (Christian Mungiu)
7. The Wizard of Lies (Barry Levinson)
8. Lady Macbeth (William Oldroyd)
9. Wonder Wheel (Woody Allen)
10. Tom of Finland (Dome Karukoski)

Well, speaking of categories that seem a little thin on competition this year:

or Nocturama (which was better reviewed in NY than The Square i think)

have no idea what the critical standing of this year's imminent Haneke is.

BPM would be my choice for best film right now

ice cream social justice (Dr Morbius), Thursday, 30 November 2017 16:53 (six years ago) link

thinking Call Me By Your Name is a good guess for NY's top choice, unless there's a Dunkirk faction.

The former is far more divisive than BPM. The latter is much less in the conversation.

Waters' commentary now up: https://www.artforum.com/inprint/issue=201710&id=72432

My faves:

5 WONDERSTRUCK (Todd Haynes) Want an IQ test for your cinephile children? Just take them to see this beautifully made, feel-good kids’ movie about the hearing-impaired, starring a little girl who looks exactly like Simone Signoret. If your small-fry like the film, they’re smart. If they don’t, they’re stupid.

10 TOM OF FINLAND (Dome Karukoski) This dirty but dignified, oddly commercial biopic of the artist who inspired the modern-day s/m gay leather scene is now the Finnish government’s official entry in the 2017 foreign-film Oscar race. That’s what I call patriotic penis progress, and I hope it wins.

ice cream social justice (Dr Morbius), Monday, 4 December 2017 02:04 (six years ago) link

I just watched Beach Rats and thought it was gross, the denouement is so gratuitously depressing that I felt like I wanted to have a talk with Hittman and ask her why, exactly, she made this - were the stakes so high? Because it didn't feel like they were so that it would turn out that way. Aside from that it was not believable that that guy would have been hanging out with those other three for a start and certainly not believable that he'd rope those chumps into a violent act for the sake of a bag of weed.

Susan Stranglehands (jed_), Monday, 4 December 2017 02:22 (six years ago) link

I wondering, is The Square's absence from the Sight and Sound list because the critics didn't like it or because it hasn't been widely enough seen?

Dan S, Wednesday, 6 December 2017 06:14 (six years ago) link

The former, surely, since you have Zama/ Western/Faces Places at 4,5 and 6.

Susan Stranglehands (jed_), Wednesday, 6 December 2017 10:44 (six years ago) link

I guess people are pissed about Twin Peaks turning up on these lists

Number None, Wednesday, 6 December 2017 11:03 (six years ago) link

Cahiers du Cinema: Split? A little confused, real sore thumb in that list.

Simon H: I'm amazed at the Mudbound hype too. Solid but not spectacular in any way, and had a couple really poor sequences. The cockpit scene should have just been edited out if they didn't have the budget - it took me right out of the film. Given the subject matter and the buzz, I expected more of an emotional kick.

Maybe the sound team should get a nomination though because lord did I grimace at the sound of the leg re-break. Ugh.

finlay (fionnland), Wednesday, 6 December 2017 11:04 (six years ago) link

The Square hasn't yet been released in the UK, which might partly account for its absence from the S&S poll in particular. But it also isn't very good.

Ward Fowler, Wednesday, 6 December 2017 11:05 (six years ago) link

The editor wrote in Sight & Sound that they'd actively encouraged those polled this year to vote for any moving pictures, not just cinema, so I guess that boosted Twin Peaks.

Lol at Cahiers stanning for Split. Is it because he's an auteur?

Alba, Wednesday, 6 December 2017 12:30 (six years ago) link

Only one person in the printed edition gave Detroit a vote (haven't checked the online-only ballots). What a huge fall from grace. I thought it was terrific.

Try the one right below that one on the list.

Marginally better than Split, but I can at least understand people hyping up Portman's overacting. I could have sworn that was a 2016 release anyway.

AMERICAN FILM INSTITUTE ANNOUNCES
AFI AWARDS 2017 OFFICIAL SELECTIONS

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE, December 7, 2017, LOS ANGELES, CA — The American Film Institute (AFI) announced today the Official Selections of AFI AWARDS 2017, celebrating the year's most outstanding achievements in the art of the moving image — with 10 films and 10 television programs deemed culturally and artistically significant.

In addition to the 20 honorees, AFI also recognizes THE VIETNAM WAR with an AFI Special Award.

AFI AWARDS is a coveted honor for its noncompetitive celebration of collaboration. Honorees are selected based on works that advance the art of the moving image, enhance the rich cultural heritage of America's art form, inspire audiences and artists alike and make a mark on American society.

"At a time when the world seems defined by division, storytellers bring us together as one," said Bob Gazzale, AFI President and CEO. "AFI AWARDS is honored to celebrate this community of artists who challenge and inspire us, entertain and enlighten us — ultimately reminding us of our common heartbeat."

from that follies link; this nails one of my biggest issues with Three Billboards
"The script's many acid-tongued speeches pander relentlessly to the film's target audience of white liberals, allowing them to get off on the cheap thrill of hearing a well-placed slur while simultaneously giving them a chance to applaud their own sense of moral righteousness."
saw this at a packed house at BAM and can absolutely confirm this as truth. amazingly well acted but mostly empty.

I do think there's a good essay to be written about this film's place in one of 2017's predictably predominant themes: lack of accountability.

Why are you doing on ILX then?

Fred Klinkenberg (Eric H.), Thursday, 14 December 2017 22:27 (six years ago) link

Parts of the Square are really feeble - the subplot about the piles of detrius being accidentally cleaned up (lol modern art is indistinguishable from rubbish lol), the entirely predictable/unshocking 'shocking' video of the child being blown up, cheap laughs at the guy with tourette's at the press conference, who cannot be silenced because of middle class artworld fear over 'blocking discourse'. The ape guy at the party is obviously meant to be socially awkward to watch, but the scene comes so late in this (much too long) movie that you can't help feeling just duffed up by it, even though the performance is obv a technical bit of work. The only time the film really came alive for me was the long sequence of the museum director and his work intern going off to post the leaflets in the block of flats - very tense, a sense of disaster looming, hubris, good music - and the robbery scene before that.

Goldderby summa. Let's see if Chalamet, the frontrunner, can shake off Oldman:

The Phoenix Critics Circle (PCC) had two picks for the best pic of the year: “The Shape of Water” and “Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri.” This marks the first win for either film from any of the 14 critics groups heard from to date. “The Florida Project” and “Get Out” have four wins apiece from the critics.

The Phoenix scribes awarded Best Actress to both Sally Hawkins (“The Shape of Water”), and Oscar frontrunner Frances McDormand (“Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri”). The former leads the latter by a margin of six wins to four.

Timothee Chalamet (“Call Me by Your Name”) won over the Phoenix critics thus bringing his total up to five. He continues to widen the gap with the two other leading Best Actor Oscar contenders who have each picked up a pair of prizes: Daniel Day-Lewis (“Phantom Thread”) and Gary Oldman (“Darkest Hour”).

While Sam Rockwell (“Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri”) picked up his third critics award, Supporting Actor Oscar frontrunner Willem Dafoe (“The Florida Project”) already has nine crowding his mantle. And with her win with the PCC, Best Supporting Actress Oscar frontrunner Laurie Metcalf (“Lady Bird”) now has nine as well while her closest rival, Allison Janney (“I, Tonya”), remains at four.

The Phoenix folks went with Christopher Nolan (“Dunkirk”) for Best Director and split the screenplay award between Greta Gerwig (“Lady Bird”), Martin McDonagh (“Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri”) and Jordan Peele (“Get Out”).

For me it's mostly that I thought Kore-eda had become too saccharine and slick on his latest films, but there's both some real darkness, and some unexpected filmic choices, in After the Storm. For instance the male lead is kinda too tall for a lot of the camera setups, which never failed to amuse me.

WGA Nominations

http://awardswatch.com/2018/01/04/logan-i-tonya-grab-writers-guild-of-america-wga-nominations-the-post-is-snubbed/

ORIGINAL SCREENPLAY

The Big Sick, Written by Emily V. Gordon & Kumail Nanjiani
Get Out, Written by Jordan Peele
I, Tonya, Written by Steven Rogers
Lady Bird, Written by Greta Gerwig
The Shape of Water, Screenplay by Guillermo del Toro & Vanessa Taylor; Story by Guillermo del Toro

ADAPTED SCREENPLAY

Call Me by Your Name, Screenplay by James Ivory; Based on the Novel by André Aciman
The Disaster Artist, Screenplay by Scott Neustadter & Michael H. Weber; Based on the Book The Disaster Artist: My Life Inside the Room, the Greatest Bad Movie Ever Made by Greg Sestero and Tom Bissell
Logan, Screenplay by Scott Frank & James Mangold and Michael Green; Story by James Mangold; Based on Characters from the X-Men Comic Books and Theatrical Motion Pictures
Molly’s Game, Screenplay by Aaron Sorkin; Based on the Book by Molly Bloom
Mudbound, Screenplay by Virgil Williams and Dee Rees; Based on the Novel by Hillary Jordan

Not feeling like "snubbed" is necessary over The Post's exclusion here. And I love the tortured logic of I, Tonya being original but Logan being adapted.

this has probably been discussed ad infinitum but does anyone else think that the expanded best pic field has evaporated a lot of enthusiasm for the Academy Awards? or maybe it's something else? I recognize my own ambivalence in recent times vs previous decades but i'm sensing it elsewhere too. i don't know if the ratings reflect it, so i might be completely wrong, but i think some of the shine has been taken off.

Yeah, catch it in a theater if you can. It's been re-released to theaters where I live, which surprised me at first, but makes total sense. I hated it - we don't need any more WWII movies or any movies that depict war as anything but totally pointless and endlessly destructive - but it absolutely deserves the Best Cinematography Oscar. it's a beautiful looking movie. the sound is really good, too.

Man, six slams on Call Me By Your Name in a row...

"Minneapolis" (barf) (Eric H.), Friday, 16 February 2018 15:11 (six years ago) link

But then, for Alfred, this:

“Many of this year’s best films (Dunkirk, Nocturama, BPM, The Beguiled) were about the power of collectivity. That’s sort of how The Florida Project starts out, but it eventually retrenches into a selfish world where families and finally individuals turn on one another, as if to imply that in the last analysis, there’s no helping the feral poor. And, when all else fails, go to Disney World.” —Michael Sicinski

ha, there's like two unqualifiedly positive comments in that whole page

jmm, Friday, 16 February 2018 15:16 (six years ago) link

And they were both for the latest Gore Verbinski movie.

"Minneapolis" (barf) (Eric H.), Friday, 16 February 2018 15:19 (six years ago) link

I liked CMBYN a lot and have my criticisms but every one of those comments reeks of smugness. No sex? No Italian vistas? Did they even watch the movie?

morning wood truancy (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Friday, 16 February 2018 15:30 (six years ago) link

Yeah, most of those comments were askew.

"Non-horror movies that act like horror movies" is my worst nightmare, honeybunch. ;)

ice cream social justice (Dr Morbius), Friday, 16 February 2018 15:42 (six years ago) link

I could tell.

"Minneapolis" (barf) (Eric H.), Friday, 16 February 2018 15:50 (six years ago) link

With a side helping of "horror movies that act like horror movies."

"Minneapolis" (barf) (Eric H.), Friday, 16 February 2018 15:50 (six years ago) link

How on earth do you take Nocturama to be about the power of collectivity?

Frederik B, Friday, 16 February 2018 18:29 (six years ago) link

wait, is Sacred Deer a horror movie or not?

ice cream social justice (Dr Morbius), Friday, 16 February 2018 18:42 (six years ago) link

The teamwork of that French SWAT team was awesome and inspiring. xp

WilliamC, Friday, 16 February 2018 18:43 (six years ago) link

xp well it's a comedy, first and foremost

OK, Twin Peaks came closer to the top 10 than I figured.

there are voters in that pool i haven't thought of in 20 years -- Joanna Langfield, David Ansen -- plus the young turks i've never heard of.

Get Out was indeed "pants" plotwise tho.

ice cream social justice (Dr Morbius), Saturday, 17 February 2018 02:57 (six years ago) link

pants?

flappy bird, Saturday, 17 February 2018 02:58 (six years ago) link

I didn't mention In Transit on the other thread because I saw it several years ago

Skandies poll results ... Nocturama at #1, Vicky Krieps as best actress

http://skandies.org/results/categories.1?year=2017

ice cream social justice (Dr Morbius), Wednesday, 21 February 2018 11:51 (six years ago) link

Can anyone shed any light on how the character of the Skandies panel might lead it to coalesce around Nocturama as the best film of the year?

they're terr'ists eh

at least they don't recognize child rapists like [lists every white guy in movies]

ice cream social justice (Dr Morbius), Thursday, 1 March 2018 19:11 (six years ago) link

I'm happy with this explanation.

The D'Angelo effect usually only applies to MD'A's favorite movie of the year, which this year was mother!

Indie Spirit Awards: Get Out, Peele, Chalamet, McDormand, Rockwell, Janney

Ingrid Goes West over Columbus for best first feature is some bullshit. (Not as much as magically promoting Get Out beyond the category, of course.)

ice cream social justice (Dr Morbius), Sunday, 4 March 2018 08:41 (six years ago) link

I really want to see Columbus (won the Filmspotting podcast's "golden brick" of the year – are any of you listeners?) but can find zero sign of it getting a UK release in cinemas following its LFF appearance.

Alba, Sunday, 4 March 2018 09:12 (six years ago) link

I guess it'll turn up on Mubi or whatever some time.

Alba, Sunday, 4 March 2018 09:13 (six years ago) link

Ingrid Goes West was great

flappy bird, Sunday, 4 March 2018 16:21 (six years ago) link

I laughed a lot.

Elizabeth Olsen should've been nominated in Supp Actress.

I swear Columbus was briefly streaming on Amazon Prime, didn’t catch it in time

Great piece, thanks for the link... that bit about Sean Baker preserving his digitally shot films and losing one of the master files for Starlet is really sobering.
