I'd really, really like to do a jungle/drum 'n bass poll. Any interest in that?

― Le Bateau Ivre,

YES. Especially if some hardcore was allowed as well.

chap, Sunday, 18 September 2016 02:15 (seven years ago) link

I'd totally vote in that! And yeah hardcore/jungle/drum'n'bass (but not later variations like dubstep) would be a proper way to poll it.

Tuomas, Monday, 19 September 2016 06:49 (seven years ago) link

I agree. There's no denying things were crossing over like that. Dubstep though, nah.

Le Bateau Ivre, Monday, 19 September 2016 10:11 (seven years ago) link

A dubstep and emergent genres could be cool too, maybe a bit tricky to define though.

So are we just ignoring the list now? Is that how it's going to be? You people are iconoclasts! Mockers of institutions. It's not right goddamnit. I've been waiting for years...YEARS to run my covers poll.

Bravo to Bee OK for reconsolidating the list - things were getting a little floppy and confusing there.

So, first-ish call for the following folks: Moka, gr8080, Gukbe, Billy Dods, some dude, NickB, C. Grisso/McCain, Raymond Cummings and sleeve - think you'll be in a good spot to tackle your upcoming polls? Any of you in a good spot in the next few weeks, in case the first couple people can't do theirs just yet?

Silence, followed by unintelligible stammering. (Doctor Casino), Thursday, 22 September 2016 18:22 (seven years ago) link

I can do it. when do you need me?

Looks like Ismael Klata just wrapped George Michael results yesterday, so the pitcher's mound is open if you're ready to play ball...!

Considering the spirit of ilm is less participatory now than a few years ago, and TMBG was always going to be a niche poll anyway, you may as well drop me off the list for that one next time you revise it.

i will do it this way, so it's here: ILM Artist Poll No. 80 · Iggy & The Stooges · Voting Thread-End 11/01/16

Bee OK, Saturday, 24 September 2016 01:19 (seven years ago) link

i would not say things are slowing down, the Smiths tied for the most ballots ever and that was this year. i just think it depends on the poll or artist so i hope you end up not bailing on They Might Be Giants. i'm pretty sure my Talking Heads poll will be really, really popular.

xpost to Johnny Fever

Bee OK, Saturday, 24 September 2016 01:21 (seven years ago) link

could I request Robyn Hitchcock?

campreverb, Saturday, 24 September 2016 15:27 (seven years ago) link

JF, sorry to hear you feel that way! I don't think of ILM as less participatory, though maybe a little less...frantic? Idk. I was looking forward to your TMBG poll, so naturally I hope you reconsider.

Doctor Casino, Saturday, 24 September 2016 15:56 (seven years ago) link

Requesting a voting extension for the Stooges poll so it's two weeks instead of one. Yay or nay?

✖✖✖ (Moka), Saturday, 24 September 2016 17:59 (seven years ago) link

i think two weeks would be fine, it would give me more time too.

You have about 24 hours left to vote for your favorite 70's soul albums, so

DO IT NOW!

ArchCarrier, Sunday, 16 October 2016 05:28 (seven years ago) link

bump, bum-pity, bump. anyone willing to open a new poll? the Shoegazer poll is real tempting after the Pitchfork list but i can't do that right now. if anyone wants to take the ball and run with that one i would be fine with that. otherwise i have not done a big artist poll like that and will do it next summer if no-one steps up now.

Bee OK, Thursday, 27 October 2016 00:44 (seven years ago) link

will still do Talking Heads in Feb of 2017...

no-one else seems to be stepping up, so go for it. should be a blast!

Bee OK, Friday, 28 October 2016 01:22 (seven years ago) link

All right! I will arrange this and open a nomination thread early next week!!

Le Bateau Ivre, Friday, 28 October 2016 10:24 (seven years ago) link

For the soul albums poll I wrote an AutoHotkey script (so Windows only) that imports a folder of ballots and automatically generates the final list. No more manual spreadsheet labor.

If there's any interest, I can post the script somewhere.

ArchCarrier, Friday, 28 October 2016 11:04 (seven years ago) link

That worked well. What's involved implementing it? As someone who knows dick all about scripts and stuff, what environment do you even run it in?

Ⓓⓡ. (Johnny Fever), Friday, 28 October 2016 12:16 (seven years ago) link

(watching a Youtube tutorial rn)

Ⓓⓡ. (Johnny Fever), Friday, 28 October 2016 12:21 (seven years ago) link

That'd be great ArchCarrier! I'll try and figure out how to use that asap

Le Bateau Ivre, Friday, 28 October 2016 12:36 (seven years ago) link

The only thing you need is AutoHotkey itself. After you install it, you can just double click the script file and let it do its thing.

Here's the installer (exe file).

ArchCarrier, Friday, 28 October 2016 15:14 (seven years ago) link

<offtopic>

And once you've installed the program and start using it, your life will never be the same. I use it to start programs or do web searches from anywhere with just one keyboard shortcut, it automatically expands abbreviations to longer pieces of text (phone numbers, email addresses, long words that are hard to type...).

</offtopic>

ArchCarrier, Friday, 28 October 2016 15:19 (seven years ago) link

Okay, installed. Please share the script. :)

Ⓓⓡ. (Johnny Fever), Friday, 28 October 2016 17:32 (seven years ago) link

this is awesome stuff ArchCarrier, can't wait to use it for my next poll if you share.

poll number 62 = drum 'n bass/jungle.

nice

Bee OK, Saturday, 29 October 2016 02:02 (seven years ago) link

OK, here is the script: http://pastebin.com/hT45S5Rf

How to use it:
0. Install AutoHotkey if you haven't done so.
1. Save the script to a folder, for example 'ILM poll'. It doesn't matter what you call the script file, but make sure it has the extension .ahk
2. Create a subdirectory in that folder called 'ballots'. In this folder you put the ballots in .txt format, one file per user, one album (or song) per line.
3. Run the script by double clicking on it. If you get a Windows error that there's no program associated with .ahk files then something went wrong with the installation of AutoHotkey.

After the script has run, there should be a new text file called votes.txt. This is a list of the final results sorted by points. But see the Issues below for final sorting.

Nominations
If you use nominations in your poll, you can save that list in a file called master.txt in the main 'ILM Poll' folder. If there's such a file, the script will search through the list and give a warning if an album on a ballot is not present in the noms list. It even opens the naughty ballot in Notepad for you.

Issues
Unfortunately, the script can only sort by one column, so you have to paste votes.txt in Excel or LibreOffice and do a final sort on 1) points, 2) number of votes, 3) number ones. Because of this issue, tied votes are not detected.
Once I find a way to sort by multiple columns, I'll update the script.

ArchCarrier, Saturday, 29 October 2016 07:06 (seven years ago) link

Points
The script is based on 50 albums; the first gets 50 points, the second 49, down to 1 point for the last album on a ballot. If you use a different point system you need to change line 33. Let me know if you need help with this.

ArchCarrier, Saturday, 29 October 2016 07:25 (seven years ago) link

You can test the script with the ballots from the soul poll: http://pastebin.com/raw/0CsqNduJ
Just create a couple of text files; the different ballots are separated by a line of dashes.

ArchCarrier, Saturday, 29 October 2016 07:43 (seven years ago) link

Thanks so much!
