At this rate the only qualified track will be "And you and I" Yes!

Is there a limit to number of Fela songs we can vote for?

quan voice (voodoo chili), Tuesday, 10 February 2015 14:13 (nine years ago) link

*the number

quan voice (voodoo chili), Tuesday, 10 February 2015 14:13 (nine years ago) link

I agree that 10 minutes should be the absolute minimum length for the epic poll, otherwise you could just nominate a whole bunch of normal, not-particularly-epic techno/jazz/prog/etc tunes. Though I'm fine with a 15 minute minimum too.

― Tuomas,

you could always allow epic rock tracks under 10 mins but make techno/jazz etc be over 15 I suppose. Obviously jazz and techno has a huge advantage otherwise.

lol

more eligible tracks != an advantage

20

saer, Tuesday, 10 February 2015 15:52 (nine years ago) link

also we don't really need to have an argument about what constitutes rock/techno/jazz on top of everything else

example (crüt), Tuesday, 10 February 2015 15:53 (nine years ago) link

How about making the limit after the best known longest rock track so no rock gets in?

The Ghost of (strychnine), Tuesday, 10 February 2015 15:54 (nine years ago) link

Just make it 60 mins and we can declare Boris - Absolutego and Corrupted - El Mundo Frio the winners now.

Eric Burdon & War, On Drugs (Cosmic Slop), Tuesday, 10 February 2015 15:57 (nine years ago) link

oh wait nm no classical

example (crüt), Tuesday, 10 February 2015 15:57 (nine years ago) link

jfc just let everyone vote for whatever they want and see what happens. that will make for the most interesting set of results anyway.

Roberto Spiralli, Tuesday, 10 February 2015 16:00 (nine years ago) link

does terry riley count as 'classical'?

let me be your fan taytay (NickB), Tuesday, 10 February 2015 16:01 (nine years ago) link

of course

Eric Burdon & War, On Drugs (Cosmic Slop), Tuesday, 10 February 2015 16:03 (nine years ago) link

if its just a poll on unusually long tracks then perhaps it should be 20+ mins

Eric Burdon & War, On Drugs (Cosmic Slop), Tuesday, 10 February 2015 16:10 (nine years ago) link

Is there a top limit? (asked The Flaming Lips...)

Mark G, Tuesday, 10 February 2015 16:12 (nine years ago) link

the minimum & maximum is 4:20

example (crüt), Tuesday, 10 February 2015 16:13 (nine years ago) link

Uh, do live versions count?

kornrulez6969, Tuesday, 10 February 2015 16:23 (nine years ago) link

the higher the maximum the more chance jam bands will be the dominant rock form! Phish and Grateful Dead are finally taking over ilx!

Eric Burdon & War, On Drugs (Cosmic Slop), Tuesday, 10 February 2015 17:24 (nine years ago) link

You bastards, I'm just going to poll 4'33" now.

Doctor Casino, Tuesday, 10 February 2015 19:49 (nine years ago) link

you guys aren't still discussing epics poll, are you

daavid, Tuesday, 10 February 2015 20:27 (nine years ago) link

discussion of epics poll must be limited to 15 minutes

Οὖτις, Tuesday, 10 February 2015 20:31 (nine years ago) link

the length of an epic should be polled first

droit au butt (Euler), Tuesday, 10 February 2015 20:35 (nine years ago) link

FYI, the Italo poll is officially done.

daavid, Thursday, 12 February 2015 21:27 (nine years ago) link

So, this is kinda gay but has ILM ever done a divas poll?

Eric H., Thursday, 12 February 2015 21:36 (nine years ago) link

which poster is the biggest diva on ilm poll? Can just imagine the fun on that nomination thread.

Eric Burdon & War, On Drugs (Cosmic Slop), Thursday, 12 February 2015 21:40 (nine years ago) link

lex

Eric H., Thursday, 12 February 2015 21:54 (nine years ago) link

Hey guys I'm sorry but I won't be able to run the Extreme Metal poll, school is just to intense right now. Maybe lex wants to run it? ;)

Frobisher, Sunday, 15 February 2015 16:51 (nine years ago) link

Of course, pfunkboy and scik mouthy are free to take my spot and do their all-time poll if they want! If that works with everyone...

Frobisher, Sunday, 15 February 2015 17:00 (nine years ago) link

Who decides what metal is "Extreme"? Does Ozzy count? How about Slayer? We are going to need to discuss this at length.

kornrulez6969, Sunday, 15 February 2015 18:01 (nine years ago) link

we need to poll whether we should discuss that at length

droit au butt (Euler), Sunday, 15 February 2015 18:03 (nine years ago) link

Epic Extreme Metal

THIS IS NOT AN EPICS POLL -- classical nomination supplemental thread (ILM Ballot Poll #58)
^^ Accepting classical ("classical") nominations now.

Romo... ROMO! Bring Back Sergio Romo! (Leee), Thursday, 5 March 2015 19:17 (nine years ago) link

so you guys had a whole thread to argue about what was being polled and that turned out so badly you had to make a second one?

Οὖτις, Thursday, 5 March 2015 19:18 (nine years ago) link

It was fine mostly, I just want to get rid of one sticking point and don't have mod privileges to change the top most and this was the most visible way to let people know.

Romo... ROMO! Bring Back Sergio Romo! (Leee), Thursday, 5 March 2015 19:27 (nine years ago) link

The no classical rule was there mostly because I didn't want to listen or deal with Xenakis. Sigh.

Romo... ROMO! Bring Back Sergio Romo! (Leee), Thursday, 5 March 2015 21:14 (nine years ago) link

Have we ever had a ballot with more than 20 entries? How are the points distributed for, say, a 50-item ballot?

Romo... ROMO! Bring Back Sergio Romo! (Leee), Wednesday, 11 March 2015 17:54 (nine years ago) link

it's not complicated you just adjust the points scale (no. 1 gets 50 points, no. 50 gets 1 point, etc.)

Οὖτις, Wednesday, 11 March 2015 17:55 (nine years ago) link

this is why you lay out how you're going to assign points at the outset, and how long a ballot you will accept

Οὖτις, Wednesday, 11 March 2015 17:56 (nine years ago) link

here's a dropbox link to the spreadsheet template I use.

SORRY, DAD.

Romo... ROMO! Bring Back Sergio Romo! (Leee), Wednesday, 11 March 2015 18:14 (nine years ago) link

To answer your first question - yes we have, though not often. Justified in this case IMO. Epics poll => epic length ballots. I'd also welcome a stupidly epic points assignment, e.g. 999 points for your #1, 500 for #2, 250, 200, 150, 145, 140 etc. (or something)

Jeff W, Wednesday, 11 March 2015 19:50 (nine years ago) link

SORRY, DAD.

yr welcome. now go to your room

Οὖτις, Wednesday, 11 March 2015 20:06 (nine years ago) link

I used a floating Pazz & Jop-type point system for Neil Young--how many points you had to work with depended upon how large your ballot was--with ballots of up to 50 songs. It was quite needlessly complicated.

clemenza, Wednesday, 11 March 2015 22:47 (nine years ago) link

It was my Blur poll that resulted in this never-ending list being drawn up a few years ago. That poll had 22 spots on the ballot and some of the subsequent ones did too, but it's been tidied up to 20 in most of them.
