ILM Ballot Polls for 2014 and beyond -- order, timing, "I would have voted if I'd known about it," etc

So I'm arbitrarily deciding on the following parameters:

15-minute minimum track length
2-week nomination period

Any strenuous objections?

I feel strongly that I want to vote for live version of Yoo Doo Right and it's 14:sthg

ditto "Achilles Last Stand" ditto ditto 10:23

And since the Who's "A Quick One, While He's Away" was, for all intents and purposes, the first Rock Epic, I'd propose 9:10 as the minimum.

Wouldn't something like "Desolation Row" or "Sad-Eyed Lady of the Lowlands" predate that?

D'oh, you're right. Both predated the Who song.

A lot of songs I'd want toinclude are in the 10-15 minute range but I'll work with whatever the rules turn out to be. >15 means I'll mostly vote for jazz I guess.

In terms of an actual rock group, probably the Rolling Stones' "Goin' Home" is the first; Freak Out! came out a few months later, but I'm not sure you'd want to count the long songs from that.

It sounds like everyone would be happier with 10 minutes than 15 -- that's the absolute minimum that I'm willing to go, as I originally wanted to 20.

I suspect half of these will be proper epics and the other half will be endless vamps. I'm totally down with that.

What would be the thinking of moving the Metallica poll up a few spots to give some breathing room between it and those generic metal polls?

15 minutes seems too long if you're going to have anything besides prog and jazz. Not being able to vote for Marquee Moon is just wrong.

Good idea. I say 8:00 is long enough to count as an epic. Let's take a month to discuss.

If the bottom line is 10 minutes, I guess I'll just have to vote for "Papa Was a Rollin' Stone" multiple times.

Lots of rock epics are around the 7 min mark though.

I've got plenty of backup Phish jams in the 12 min+ range.

none of these examples are more epic than wreck of the edmund fitzgerald (6:32), but 10:00 seems pretty reasonable

What is eligible only determines one end of what gets voted for. People also have to decide whether a track counts as "epic".

you could always allow epic rock tracks under 10 mins but make techno/jazz etc be over 15 I suppose. Obviously jazz and techno has a huge advantage otherwise.
