So I'm arbitrarily deciding on the following parameters:

15-minute minimum track length
2-week nomination period

Any strenuous objections?

Hollinger Escape Plan (Leee), Saturday, 7 February 2015 20:43 (nine years ago) link

I feel strongly that I want to vote for live version of Yoo Doo Right and it's 14:sthg

groundless round (La Lechera), Saturday, 7 February 2015 22:46 (nine years ago) link

ditto "Achilles Last Stand" ditto ditto 10:23

it takes 14 to make a baby (WilliamC), Saturday, 7 February 2015 23:06 (nine years ago) link

LL otm.

And since the Who's "A Quick One, While He's Away" was, for all intents and purposes, the first Rock Epic, I'd propose 9:10 as the minimum.

Montgomery Burns' Jazz (Tarfumes The Escape Goat), Saturday, 7 February 2015 23:09 (nine years ago) link

Wouldn't something like "Desolation Row" or "Sad-Eyed Lady of the Lowlands" predate that?

clemenza, Saturday, 7 February 2015 23:12 (nine years ago) link

D'oh, you're right. Both predated the Who song.

Montgomery Burns' Jazz (Tarfumes The Escape Goat), Saturday, 7 February 2015 23:16 (nine years ago) link

A lot of songs I'd want toinclude are in the 10-15 minute range but I'll work with whatever the rules turn out to be. >15 means I'll mostly vote for jazz I guess.

⊤ℝolliℵg M∃th H∑a∂ (seandalai), Saturday, 7 February 2015 23:18 (nine years ago) link

In terms of an actual rock group, probably the Rolling Stones' "Goin' Home" is the first; Freak Out! came out a few months later, but I'm not sure you'd want to count the long songs from that.

clemenza, Saturday, 7 February 2015 23:56 (nine years ago) link

Arthur Lee:

"The song 'Revelation' was a long jam we did so the musicians could express themselves. The Rolling Stones saw us play at the Brave New World, and they recorded a long song on their next album. After our album came out, I got the blame for copying them!"

Montgomery Burns' Jazz (Tarfumes The Escape Goat), Sunday, 8 February 2015 00:06 (nine years ago) link

It sounds like everyone would be happier with 10 minutes than 15 -- that's the absolute minimum that I'm willing to go, as I originally wanted to 20.

Hollinger Escape Plan (Leee), Sunday, 8 February 2015 20:46 (nine years ago) link

as somebody who likes a whole lot of really long songs, I'm cool w/that

sleeve, Sunday, 8 February 2015 21:51 (nine years ago) link

Many thanks, in addition to voting I'm looking forward to discovering many more super long songs to like.

groundless round (La Lechera), Sunday, 8 February 2015 22:03 (nine years ago) link

I suspect half of these will be proper epics and the other half will be endless vamps. I'm totally down with that.

example (crüt), Sunday, 8 February 2015 22:46 (nine years ago) link

I wasn't gonna participate in the epics poll but just realized it will give me another excuse to advocate for 50 Foot Wave's Power + Light.

how's life, Monday, 9 February 2015 01:58 (nine years ago) link

How's it gonna go, noms and votes or just votes?

Mark G, Monday, 9 February 2015 04:00 (nine years ago) link

Definitely noms. What's a fair number: 20 per poster? (I really want to work 20 into this poll.)

La musica si muove appena: The ILM ITALO Poll (Results Thread)

daavid, Monday, 9 February 2015 14:25 (nine years ago) link

67. Emo/Screamo/Mallcore/(post)Hardcore - Mordy
68. Creedence Clearwater Revival - crüt
69. Hard Rock/Hair Metal - how’s life
70. Extreme Metal - Viceroy
71. Stephin Merritt - Gukbe
72. Metallica - Pleasant Plains

What would be the thinking of moving the Metallica poll up a few spots to give some breathing room between it and those generic metal polls?

pplains, Monday, 9 February 2015 15:08 (nine years ago) link

15 minutes seems too long if you're going to have anything besides prog and jazz. Not being able to vote for Marquee Moon is just wrong.

kornrulez6969, Monday, 9 February 2015 15:50 (nine years ago) link

maybe instead of voting for specific tracks we can just spend three weeks nominating and voting for what set of conditions make an "epic"

gr8080, Monday, 9 February 2015 15:51 (nine years ago) link

The metal polls gives everyone a chance to have a break.

Good idea. I say 8:00 is long enough to count as an epic. Let's take a month to discuss.

kornrulez6969, Monday, 9 February 2015 16:18 (nine years ago) link

If the bottom line is 10 minutes, I guess I'll just have to vote for "Papa Was a Rollin' Stone" multiple times.

Johnny Fever, Monday, 9 February 2015 16:21 (nine years ago) link

Lots of rock epics are around the 7 min mark though.

Eric Burdon & War, On Drugs (Cosmic Slop), Monday, 9 February 2015 16:27 (nine years ago) link

which is what I assume jf was getting at

Eric Burdon & War, On Drugs (Cosmic Slop), Monday, 9 February 2015 16:27 (nine years ago) link

maggot brain isnt even 10 mins

Eric Burdon & War, On Drugs (Cosmic Slop), Monday, 9 February 2015 16:28 (nine years ago) link

it'd be criminal to exclude all the 23-second epics

example (crüt), Monday, 9 February 2015 16:28 (nine years ago) link

I've got plenty of backup Phish jams in the 12 min+ range.

how's life, Monday, 9 February 2015 16:31 (nine years ago) link

none of these examples are more epic than wreck of the edmund fitzgerald (6:32), but 10:00 seems pretty reasonable

mookieproof, Monday, 9 February 2015 16:33 (nine years ago) link

crut otm His fave grindcore tracks are over a minute long and in grindcore terms thats an epic

Eric Burdon & War, On Drugs (Cosmic Slop), Monday, 9 February 2015 17:16 (nine years ago) link

Bardo Pond's cover is!

Hollinger Escape Plan (Leee), Monday, 9 February 2015 17:51 (nine years ago) link

personally I wish Leee was sticking with a 15-minute minimum

sleeve, Monday, 9 February 2015 17:56 (nine years ago) link

i think leee should decide whatever the fuck he wants to do even if it means only bardo pond and autechre tracks are available to vote for

Eric Burdon & War, On Drugs (Cosmic Slop), Monday, 9 February 2015 18:26 (nine years ago) link

I have to say ... I sorta hate these polls where the majority of the discussion centers around what is actually being polled

Οὖτις, Monday, 9 February 2015 18:30 (nine years ago) link

OK poll's cancelled.

i was just offering my solicited 2 cents as a voter and epic enthusiast

groundless round (La Lechera), Monday, 9 February 2015 18:58 (nine years ago) link

I agree that 10 minutes should be the absolute minimum length for the epic poll, otherwise you could just nominate a whole bunch of normal, not-particularly-epic techno/jazz/prog/etc tunes. Though I'm fine with a 15 minute minimum too.

Tuomas, Tuesday, 10 February 2015 11:21 (nine years ago) link

Marquee Moon, 12" version = 9:58

Latest version off CD = 10:47

I'm OK with ten minutes. That's a good place for that dude to wave a winning flag.

Mark G, Tuesday, 10 February 2015 11:34 (nine years ago) link

What is eligible only determines one end of what gets voted for. People also have to decide whether a track counts as "epic".

⊤ℝolliℵg M∃th H∑a∂ (seandalai), Tuesday, 10 February 2015 11:57 (nine years ago) link

At this rate the only qualified track will be "And you and I" Yes!

Is there a limit to number of Fela songs we can vote for?

― Tuomas,

you could always allow epic rock tracks under 10 mins but make techno/jazz etc be over 15 I suppose. Obviously jazz and techno has a huge advantage otherwise.

more eligible tracks != an advantage
