Damn. I got people to listen to this after the 2012 poll has already occurred. (Again, I obviously care way too much about these polls.) I listened to one other song from the EP and didn't like it nearly as much but I should check it out.

here's a non-EP single, it's pretty amazing imo

I mean, just holy shit @ 2:42

a sock of regals (Edward III), Tuesday, 29 January 2013 06:44 (eleven years ago) link

yep, just listened to all of that, very impressed - great sonic detail amidst the bangin' tunes (and the tunes themselves don't always go the obvious way)

"Play basketball with Fidel Castro" sounds like a pretty interesting feature of a live music performance.

Carl's, Jr! Yeah, I see what you mean though. It might be worth it to start paying more attention to underground Mexican and Latin American music generally. Club Fonograma seems like a good site, but I haven't made time to sift through it.

The song is from 2010 but the video is brand new, this guy is one of my all time favourites

(It's a track by Mantler, he sings "it's not the words you love / it's the voice of the author / it's not the story spoken / but the impression furnished" with cool simplicity and I die a little)

i would be ok with this thread if it had a better name, any ideas?

haha this thread is hard to define

but at the same time i think i'll know exactly what youtubes to post in it

baby beluga (upper mississippi sh@kedown), Tuesday, 29 January 2013 22:13 (eleven years ago) link

Eh I dunno if there's a better name to be found, we all have an idea of what the thread is for. I have a category in my head I call "avant-accessible" but it looks pretty corny in writing.

questino (seandalai), Tuesday, 29 January 2013 23:05 (eleven years ago) link

if we agree to a name for this thread it will mean we no longer have a use for it

questino (seandalai), Tuesday, 29 January 2013 23:13 (eleven years ago) link

Lamp, I always felt bad about posting to your forestwave thread because I was never sure exactly what it was about besides "stuff that Lamp likes"

questino (seandalai), Tuesday, 29 January 2013 23:15 (eleven years ago) link

yeah the little voice in my head saying 'call it Rolling Avant-Garde 2013' or worse 'Rolling Art Music 2013' had to be rapidly gagged

reckon the zone of ambiguity suggested by the current title is what's needed, really

imago, Tuesday, 29 January 2013 23:25 (eleven years ago) link

it's just ugly and sounds dumb though, i thought off to the forest was a v evocative thread title

flopson, Tuesday, 29 January 2013 23:27 (eleven years ago) link

i suppose i wanted a fairly functional, didactic title as my mood upon starting it was curt

of course, 'forest' has its own connotations - is there any room for interplanetary molotov-hurlers amidst the dryadic jamboree?

imago, Tuesday, 29 January 2013 23:30 (eleven years ago) link

dancing with the dolphins 2013

idk I think (but who knows?) we're going for something broader than forest vibes this time, kind of a big tent for refugees from the forest but also JF's shambala, the defunct dilettantes, Outloud Crüe and divers other ILXors in search of a home.

a sock of regals (Edward III), Tuesday, 29 January 2013 23:32 (eleven years ago) link

This thread has gotten off to a pretty good start. I don't think all the hand-wringing is called for, however normal it is.

_Rudipherous_, Tuesday, 29 January 2013 23:39 (eleven years ago) link

Not that my opinion should matter much since I don't normally end up listening to much music that would fit into this thread.

_Rudipherous_, Tuesday, 29 January 2013 23:39 (eleven years ago) link

that isn't true. if shiina ringo's chestnut chlorine semen thingy album came out now it'd have about 300 posts dedicated to it right here, 150 of which my own

imago, Tuesday, 29 January 2013 23:41 (eleven years ago) link

Lamp, I always felt bad about posting to your forestwave thread because I was never sure exactly what it was about besides "stuff that Lamp likes"

it was kinda an attempt at zoning in on the post-hipster zeitgeist, rolling off to the forest was an attempt at kinda head-nodding towards various emerging trends while also repping for big knut hamsun whos novels seemed to be part of the thing as well. thread didnt really turn out to be good for much although i think it was the first place that 'new for u' showed up on ilx, small distinctions i guess...

anyway david markson, spiritual poverty, early 80s wastelands, 'gaspard de le nuit' and roxy music playing in the background of parties, no one owns a laptop anymore, the do not touch them cassette on forced nostalgia, eugene ludins and disparate scando landlovers all went by unmemorialized, willing to start afresh with something less ambitious and less vague maybe the sound of icebergs melting idk

future crimes (Lamp), Tuesday, 29 January 2013 23:47 (eleven years ago) link

"Rolling..." was one of my favourite recent ILM threads because of the clear sense of an underlying curatorial vision. But because that vision felt so personal, I was never sure whether the stuff I posted really fit in.

Alternatively: my understanding is that this thread is a big tent and doesn't preclude more targeted explorations of any particular aesthetic.

ha i like this

the only valid reason to change the thread title is that it is not sufficiently inviting to wackos who should be posting in it eg milton parker

a sock of regals (Edward III), Wednesday, 30 January 2013 01:00 (eleven years ago) link

yeti mike posted this on facebook today. and the thread title does say "rock" so...anyway, i thought someone here might like it. cuz you guys love ty seagull right?

ilx indie rock fans might like this album too. i'm trying to be nicer to indie rock fans. my friend rob put it out. greenfield, ma's finest record label, sedimental (rob put out the first stars of the lid album so he's got space rock cred). sorry, 2012, but you probably didn't buy it. vinyl only, i think.
