“I love three things," I then say. "I love a dream of love I once had, I love you, and I love this patch of earth."

"And which do you love best?"

"The dream.”

mr. spastic - bad dream (8bitpeoples)

newest (albeit not all that new) release from a mostly digital-only label thats been mining nostalgia for the early days of home videogame consoles and computing since before most people had highspeed internet. there something eerie about how effectively this track conjures up memories of castlevania levels that never existed but the heavier drum sounds and vocals are an interesting attempt at crafting something other than simulacrum

Think this might be the right place to post some tracks off the new Perispirit (on Digitalis):

http://digitalisrecordings.bandcamp.com/track/14th-annual-s-ance-part-3
http://digitalisrecordings.bandcamp.com/track/attn-deficit-order-part-3

I've picked the two tracks where the album's waking nightmare made of Noise is set up against some rather lovely synth ghosts. Not the easiest listen but pretty great.

Thanks for the No UFOs pointer - I try to keep up with Spectrum Spools but I missed that one. I sometimes feel I'm getting diminishing returns with a lot of this stuff even compared to a year ago, but yeah this is certainly pleasant. I dig the slightly rockier vibe on Soft Coast, where did it come out originally?

Angrrau Birds (seandalai), Wednesday, 25 January 2012 13:48 (1 year ago) Permalink

Ok you guys need to hear this Piotr Kurek cassette "Heat" (only 75 copies on Digitalis, but it's on blogz):

I'm still processing it but obvious pointers in my mental music map are Sun Araw and "L'Enfant assassin des mouches". My blurb on the "2011 tracks that didn't get nominated" thread was "It's like the soundtrack to a detective movie set in some dystopian future rainforest" and that's as flowery a comparison as I can come up with at the moment.

kuedo - starfox/illum sphere's re-fox (planet mu)

this reminds a little bit of like advanced mario sequencer stuff in the way it rebuilds even as it deconstructs with these chirpy, blocky little pieces. its sort of small and soft and clever

blondes - pleasure/robert miles remix (rvng intl)

i wasnt even sure i liked this or if i just liked how easily it transforms biking around the city into first a lost bourne sequel and then a level of bit.trip runner

*AR - return (type)

the image on the cover this record reminds me quite strongly of the image on a magic card, theres a hint of something uncanny or fantastic about the mountain range, but also something contained and painterly. i think the music on this lp is providing a similar pleasure, its offering an escape into a simpler and idealized landscape while still holding out promise of the unearthly and the unobtainable. its beautiful but barren and haunting and autumn richardson's voice is like glass

This is good. How good, I'm not sure - feels like JH is moving closer towards canonical ILXbait like SVIIB and losing some of her uniqueness along the way. The weird 80s dub-boogie of Goddess Eyes II is an endearing curveball but on other tracks the effect is kind of overobvious?

I've only listened to it once mind you, so I'll probably be saying something different tomorrow.

^ This is old news I guess, but I now totally love this album from the Deeep that came out last year. Completely missed it at the time, dunno if anyone else brought it up on one of these threads. It's maybe a little bit Grimes-y (I don't really like Grimes but there are some similarities here in the multitracked vocals and some of the slightly clunky 80s-sounding istrumentation) and a little bit Motion Sickness of Time Travel-esque (aqueous and free-floating, but here it also recalls oceanic stuff like World of Echo and the first AR Kane album and Hugo Largo too). Great record with some solid tunes, and I'm a v.v. big dummy for ignoring it.

^ Grouper and Tiny Vipers as Mirroring. The album is alright, but this one song is an amazing standout for me. Gorgeous sad spacey folky music.

the new-ish lantern 7" and the visage musique compilation which i guess is 2011? i only heard it this winter tho. also listened to a bunch of the non-sundrips stuff on fadeaway tapes but theres a genteel sameness to some of it, idk, i like it tho. what else is good? i feel like ive read about/been told about some other stuff too

Masonic Butt (Lamp), Saturday, 14 April 2012 04:00 (1 year ago) Permalink

ha awesome, i hung out with lantern dude when he lived here. def a great 7 inch but imo his stuff as "omon ra ii" and in "omon ra" is even better

i'll check out that visage musique comp, i like femminielli ok. i was really horrified & turned off of a lot of local stuff by that expressway comp from earlier this year they had a song on but it wasn't the worst by far

of the more talked about local stuff i've heard recently, TOPS (previously silly kissers) and sean nicolas savage come to mind. i'm not exceedingly hot on either, but i should at least give TOPS another chance, if anything i like the sound they're going for. there was a long interview with sean nicholas savage in the alt-weekly here a couple of months ago maybe that was pretty endearing & really hilarious, came off as, like, somehow so wonderfully pretentious & flamboyant. felt like not enough of that quality translated into the music, still felt guarded & shrimpy

i probably shouldn't mention this but my real favourite current local music project is one of my best friends' solo recording project, i just think this song is fantastic http://bakedgoods.bandcamp.com/track/crescent-moon

flopson, Sunday, 15 April 2012 04:05 (1 year ago) Permalink

sean nicolas savage is another thing ive heard a bunch about. will listen to some of that other stuff when i have some more time

anyway the boneglow/delusions split on kassette klub is s0 fukken good. i was expecting some clanging echochamber drone but its these infectiously lo-fi and summery bedroom jamz plax if yr reading this i think youd really vibe it

Lamp, Wednesday, 18 April 2012 16:18 (1 year ago) Permalink

a bunch of really incredible new stuff on some old faves: nna tapes including the keith fullerton whitman/eli keszler split and 'the moon regarded...' tape by william hutson. the latter in particular is really highly recommended, excellent use of silence and space, super worth thinking about. the 'head boggle' lp on spectrum spools is also really tight. de stijl also has c spencer yeh's 'songs 2002' cassette which is p rewarding. theres also the nite jewel fact mix and the bookworms 12"

sorry this is just a list of things i really like, i dont want to forget them, time & space are infinite
