David Grubbs is one of those US indie rock guys who seem to have been in all sorts of good bands.

Oh boy, I Don't Wanna Hear It by Minor Threat is pretty much off the charts in terms of the 'it rocks!' factor. Shame that In My Eyes didn't get nommed but hey, seeing as I didn't participate in that stage I can't really complain.
Going through the lists is turning into a bit of a nostalgia-fest for me as you've probably guessed.

Grimes, Shoots & Leaves (Mr Andy M), Sunday, 16 September 2012 16:42 (eleven years ago) link

I was totally unaware of all this stuff in the 1980s (born 73) I'm envious of those who had brothers and sisters. Since those who did all seem to have been introduced to music by them.

Well I was born in 85, when I say nostalgia-fest I mean that the punky end of this stuff formed a big part of what I was listening to as a teen in the late 90s/early 2000s.

Grimes, Shoots & Leaves (Mr Andy M), Sunday, 16 September 2012 16:50 (eleven years ago) link

well, yeah, a lot of it I discovered early/mid 90s so I guess I can get nostalgic for that. However there are lots of old farts on ILM nostalgic for music they remember in the 80s (and 70s maybe 60s?)

I'm an only child born in '70 and this was all I listened to in high school

Just made my albums ballot. It's not possible to submit one ballot at a time, is it?

EveningStar (Sund4r), Sunday, 16 September 2012 19:10 (eleven years ago) link

I'm very proud of this ballot btw. (Also thinking that I might not want to listen to rock music from the 80s for another year or so.)

EveningStar (Sund4r), Sunday, 16 September 2012 19:13 (eleven years ago) link

yeah I think it's ok to submit one then the other. Most find it easier to do both though. Its up to you. Doesn't cause seandalai any more work afaik

Thanks. Please keep campaigning for albums though!

Are you all enjoying listening to stuff for the poll and discussing it?

Arvo Pärt Chimp (Neil S), Sunday, 16 September 2012 21:23 (eleven years ago) link

yeah, a v. weird collaboration that I appreciate more than Fugazi because it's overblown and hammering instead of tasteful and fussy. do not expect any OTMs for this.

Hellhouse, Sunday, 16 September 2012 21:30 (eleven years ago) link

I know what you mean about Fugazi, though I have warmed to them over the years.

Arvo Pärt Chimp (Neil S), Sunday, 16 September 2012 21:40 (eleven years ago) link

No, even when I downloaded the albums list, I thought "That's one I need to vote for." Somehow when I started deleting albums I didn't know or didn't like, I must have deleted it accidentally.:(

EveningStar (Sund4r), Monday, 17 September 2012 21:45 (eleven years ago) link

It was hard/interesting to weigh between things I liked as a kid in the 80s, things I got into later at different stages, and things I was introduced to because of this poll itself. The latter probably got the shortest shrift, even though learning about them has obviously been the most valuable part of the exercise.

EveningStar (Sund4r), Monday, 17 September 2012 21:47 (eleven years ago) link

A 50-track list felt so short!

EveningStar (Sund4r), Monday, 17 September 2012 21:48 (eleven years ago) link

I regret not making it 100 but I didn't think enough would do it

last few days to vote in the 80s rock poll by.. (Algerian Goalkeeper), Monday, 17 September 2012 21:49 (eleven years ago) link

I had to shave off a couple of Def Leppard tracks to get it down to 50 but it wasn't as tough as I thought it would be

set the controls for the heart of the sun (VegemiteGrrl), Monday, 17 September 2012 21:53 (eleven years ago) link

I started with a 4-page 'long list' of tracks I know and like to varying degrees.

EveningStar (Sund4r), Monday, 17 September 2012 21:54 (eleven years ago) link

Viceroy are you still doing the tracks rollout on monday? Can you manage it all?

last few days to vote in the 80s rock poll by.. (Algerian Goalkeeper), Monday, 17 September 2012 21:55 (eleven years ago) link

It wasn't exactly tough to make it 50, in either case, though, as much as the final list just seemed short. After I finished ranking things, I just picked the top 50. I did replace "Expressway to Yr Skull" with "For Whom the Bell Tolls" at #50 on the track list because Sonic Youth was already extremely well-represented. Otherwise, I didn't think further.
