VOTE in the 1980's ROCK POLL PLEASE! (Algerian Goalkeeper), Monday, 3 September 2012 23:50 (eleven years ago) link

I must remind everyone that if you voted for N.W.A. the vote will not be counted for them.

VOTE in the 1980's ROCK POLL PLEASE! (Algerian Goalkeeper), Tuesday, 4 September 2012 01:29 (eleven years ago) link

lol keep layin down the law tough guy

some dude, Tuesday, 4 September 2012 01:40 (eleven years ago) link

All NWA votes should actually be counted towards Warrant's final total.

EveningStar (Sund4r), Tuesday, 4 September 2012 01:57 (eleven years ago) link

haha that would really please the voters

VOTE in the 1980's ROCK POLL PLEASE! (Algerian Goalkeeper), Tuesday, 4 September 2012 02:01 (eleven years ago) link

first poll i've ever felt compelled to vote in. sheer torture narrowing it down to 50.

stirmonster, Tuesday, 4 September 2012 02:29 (eleven years ago) link

All NWA votes should actually be counted towards Warren G's final total.

Frobisher the (Viceroy), Tuesday, 4 September 2012 02:32 (eleven years ago) link

stirmonster i feel your pain

VOTE in the 1980's ROCK POLL PLEASE! (Algerian Goalkeeper), Tuesday, 4 September 2012 02:33 (eleven years ago) link

It'll be tricky trying to rank the relative merits of Blind Idiot God and Journey.

EveningStar (Sund4r), Tuesday, 4 September 2012 02:34 (eleven years ago) link

how did you manage?

VOTE in the 1980's ROCK POLL PLEASE! (Algerian Goalkeeper), Tuesday, 4 September 2012 02:53 (eleven years ago) link

I don't know. I haven't done it yet!

EveningStar (Sund4r), Tuesday, 4 September 2012 03:04 (eleven years ago) link

This is commonly my problem with polls though, unless they're e.g. artist polls. (No dis to your poll!)

EveningStar (Sund4r), Tuesday, 4 September 2012 03:06 (eleven years ago) link

Then do it! Don't be like DJP who nominates then cba voting!

I think we have 21 album ballots and 13 tracks ballots btw so please everyone vote and big thanks to those who voted!

VOTE in the 1980's ROCK POLL PLEASE! (Algerian Goalkeeper), Tuesday, 4 September 2012 03:13 (eleven years ago) link

Looking back on it, I missed out on the gimmick of up to 80 votes

VOTE in the 1980's ROCK POLL PLEASE! (Algerian Goalkeeper), Tuesday, 4 September 2012 03:16 (eleven years ago) link

Hey, there are still 2.5 weeks to listen to albums before voting. No need to rush this.

EveningStar (Sund4r), Tuesday, 4 September 2012 03:34 (eleven years ago) link

Like, I do intend to submit a ballot.

EveningStar (Sund4r), Tuesday, 4 September 2012 03:35 (eleven years ago) link

ballot submitted.

How do people think the Pixies will do? I'm not sure about critical consensus on them these days. I would expect Surfer Rosa to do well, possibly top ten?

I'd think so, Doolittle will place somewhere too though personally I'm conflicted about voting for it - I love the album but I don't think of it as a rocking rock arecord as such (whereas Surfer Rosa seems just the right side of the line).

Gavin, Leeds, Tuesday, 4 September 2012 09:40 (eleven years ago) link

I know what you mean. Albini's production certainly gives Surfa Rosa some extra oomph. I suppose they're on of those bands that are perennially popular as well.

Arvo Pärt Chimp (Neil S), Tuesday, 4 September 2012 10:01 (eleven years ago) link

I'd be shocked if they didn't make top 10.

stirmonster and everyone else thanks for your votes. Please keep them coming.

VOTE in the 1980's ROCK POLL PLEASE! (Algerian Goalkeeper), Tuesday, 4 September 2012 14:37 (eleven years ago) link

Actually Stirmonster I am glad you're here. I know you're the man to answer the earlier question.

"How about the Coil/Current 93/Nurse With Wound/Death In June/Young Gods/Swans/Foetus/Einsturzende Neubauten albums?"

VOTE in the 1980's ROCK POLL PLEASE! (Algerian Goalkeeper), Tuesday, 4 September 2012 14:38 (eleven years ago) link

The only one i dont know there is Einsturzende Neubauten
the others I only know the albums nominated. What else by those acts should we all listen to?

VOTE in the 1980's ROCK POLL PLEASE! (Algerian Goalkeeper), Tuesday, 4 September 2012 14:40 (eleven years ago) link

My two favourite Neubaiten albums nominated are Halber Mensch (which is the best of the early, noisy stuff) and Haus der Luge (which is the gateway into the later, more contemplative stuff and really kind of foly - especially Ein Stuhl in der Holle).

passive-aggressive display name (aldo), Tuesday, 4 September 2012 14:47 (eleven years ago) link

Seriously though, this poll is impossible.

passive-aggressive display name (aldo), Tuesday, 4 September 2012 14:48 (eleven years ago) link

You can do it. It is really funny seeing 1 group of ilxors struggling to make a ballot and another group sweating blood and tears over cutting down the shortlist to get 50.

I so wish I had done the 80 votes thing.

VOTE in the 1980's ROCK POLL PLEASE! (Algerian Goalkeeper), Tuesday, 4 September 2012 14:51 (eleven years ago) link

btw nakhs new d/n is terrific.

VOTE in the 1980's ROCK POLL PLEASE! (Algerian Goalkeeper), Tuesday, 4 September 2012 14:53 (eleven years ago) link

Not a chance. I have just tried shortlisting the albums again and got it below 300 for the first time.

passive-aggressive display name (aldo), Tuesday, 4 September 2012 15:09 (eleven years ago) link

You can do it!

VOTE in the 1980's ROCK POLL PLEASE! (Algerian Goalkeeper), Tuesday, 4 September 2012 15:18 (eleven years ago) link

first try cutting to down to 1 per artist. Then try cutting down a bit to x amounts per genre. Then try sticking the tail on the donkey or something

VOTE in the 1980's ROCK POLL PLEASE! (Algerian Goalkeeper), Tuesday, 4 September 2012 15:19 (eleven years ago) link

Sorry to keep harping on the Butthole Surfers, but I just wanted to add I never really associated them with the bands who got lumped together as "lo fi," although I don't think I realize that lo fi was a thing until fairly late.

Also, I remember gareth (does he still post here--I have no idea what his name is these days if so) discovering them years ago and seemingly being surprised by how interesting they were in terms of pure sound. I don't know, I may be misremembering this. They were much more of an experimental and psychedelic band than some might guess. (I think I may have expected them to be narrowly hardcore punk back before I'd heard anything by them.)

_Rudipherous_, Tuesday, 4 September 2012 15:41 (eleven years ago) link

"How about the Coil/Current 93/Nurse With Wound/Death In June/Young Gods/Swans/Foetus/Einsturzende Neubauten albums?"

i didn't vote for any Death In June, but NWW, Neubauten, Coil, Swans and Foetus all feature prominently in my top 20 albums and 3 of them are in my top 5. C93 and Young Gods also feature lower down. i ended up missing out some albums i love by these acts more than albums by other people so my poll wasn't dominated by a just few artists. i'm guessing the upper echelons of this poll will all be records i've never heard.

buttholes, birthday party / cave, big black, ministry, skinny puppy, and sonic youth also getting a lot of love from me.

stirmonster, Tuesday, 4 September 2012 15:50 (eleven years ago) link

heh I knew which Ministry album would be your favourite.

VOTE in the 1980's ROCK POLL PLEASE! (Algerian Goalkeeper), Tuesday, 4 September 2012 16:02 (eleven years ago) link

Some of those acts you mention should be in the top half of the poll too. It should be an interesting mix results wise.

VOTE in the 1980's ROCK POLL PLEASE! (Algerian Goalkeeper), Tuesday, 4 September 2012 16:03 (eleven years ago) link

I suppose if some metal makes it; that would be the stuff you don't know?

VOTE in the 1980's ROCK POLL PLEASE! (Algerian Goalkeeper), Tuesday, 4 September 2012 16:06 (eleven years ago) link

wait aldo you don't mean literally 300 albums in your shortlist do you

Einstürzende Joebarton (Nilmar Honorato da Silva), Tuesday, 4 September 2012 16:07 (eleven years ago) link

he had 400 the other day. He cried buckets over cutting down from that.

VOTE in the 1980's ROCK POLL PLEASE! (Algerian Goalkeeper), Tuesday, 4 September 2012 16:07 (eleven years ago) link

oy vey

Einstürzende Joebarton (Nilmar Honorato da Silva), Tuesday, 4 September 2012 16:08 (eleven years ago) link

i reckon i have heard about 80 of those albums, but then most of those were recorded before i was born

Einstürzende Joebarton (Nilmar Honorato da Silva), Tuesday, 4 September 2012 16:13 (eleven years ago) link

They were all recorded after I was born but most of them I did not hear in the 80s.

(Also the channeling of TV/radio evangelists: "He knows all our needs. . ." I'm not going to lie, that makes me laugh.)

_Rudipherous_, Tuesday, 4 September 2012 16:23 (eleven years ago) link

yup, the only metal i know (apart from the very odd slayer and metallica track) is the NWOBHM stuff listed. i had about 250 albums and a similar number of tracks in my initial list that i had to whittle down to 50. i ended up getting completely obsessed with it and stayed up 'til 6am doing this. ha!

heh I knew which Ministry album would be your favourite.

indeed. it didn't get the no. 1 spot though.

stirmonster, Tuesday, 4 September 2012 16:24 (eleven years ago) link

I wonder if Dog Latin can find any 'Deconstructionist' Music in these nominations hehe. It does seem an 80s thing. Of course I do not have any knowledge of Jacques Derrida so have no idea really what DL's on about, but does NWW count?

VOTE in the 1980's ROCK POLL PLEASE! (Algerian Goalkeeper), Tuesday, 4 September 2012 16:26 (eleven years ago) link

stirmonster you and aldo really make me regret not doing the 100 votes (that is what we used in the all-time metal poll and I think last years jazz poll I ran was the same).
I didn't think there was enough nominations compared to previous polls so thought I'd be the only one who did a top 100. Oh well..

Yeah that Ministry album we're talking about, I checked it out because of you posting about it years and years ago on ILM. It was the only one I hadn't heard and it blew me away. it made me appreciate the direction they kept taking. Going a bit further each time; though I realise that was a less interesting direction for you.
