i was going to say, the vocals are probably the weakest link but they're pretty easy to ignore.

yeah, totally. don't think they're awful, a bit charming in a kraut-y (finn-y?) kinda way, but i don't *need* them there. otherwise, awesome!

sucks to admit you found out about a band from pitchfork but hey CONAN
only saw mention of "horseback battle hammer" in the metal poll nominations thread, what do you all think?

i mentioned Conan a couple weeks ago in the rolling metal thread, but yeah, even if its pitchfork i'm glad to see them gaining traction, the new album is really good

Album of the week, obviously: Ufomammut - Oro: Opus Primum! I've been slavering and anticipating this one for nearly a year. Not a big departure from the sound of their last album Eve (2010), especially to those who don't regularly bathe in the epic doom/sludge/psych of this Italian band, but definitely a step forward. In my excitement I initially gave it a 10, but it does seem a part of a greater whole. It's a uniquely tricky situation where you don't get to hear the second half until months later. For now, I'll just enjoy. I pre-ordered on Amazon thinking I'd get it quicker that way, but not the case. Can stream here: http://www.roadburn.com/2012/04/ufommamut-to-stream-oro-opus-primum-in-its-entirety-exclusively-at-roadburn-2-new-video-teasers-availabel-as-well/Review - http://www.doommantia.com/2012/03/ufomammut-oro-opus-primum.html

Arenna - Beats of Olarizu (Nasoni, 2011)http://arenna.bandcamp.com/album/beats-of-olarizu-2011
This Spanish stoner-psych band continues to grow on me. I'd been eyeing their CD at AllThatIsHeavy, but the $28 tag was too much. Fortunately they're finally offering not only the full download for just €4, but they added the three bonus tracks that come with the vinyl.

Snail - Terminus (Snail) May 1Exciting new release this week. This album popped up on the All That Is Heavy site just as I was finishing putting in an order. Once I heard it, I knew it's a must-own. Snail recorded their debut way back in 1993, recorded at same studio that Sleep did Holy Mountain. I grabbed it off their Bandcamp page for $5. It's kind of cool, but can understand why it slipped under the radar, as it had maybe a bit too much grunge influence. After an EP they disbanded, and reunited in 2008 and released Blood in 09. That's where their sound really started coming together. Many of those songs were once left over from the 90s era that they completed, so Terminus is truly the best representation of the band's full capabilities. Available temporarily as name yr price. They're allotted 200 free downloads, but if you just chip in at least a dollar, it'll make that last longer. This is a great album, currently in my top 15, and well worth at least $10. Review - http://theobelisk.net/obelisk/2012/05/04/snailreview-2/http://snailhq.bandcamp.com/album/terminus
Moonless - Calling All Demons (Doomentia) May 8 - Excellent stoner/sludge from Copenhagen, Denmark.http://doomentiarecords.bandcamp.com/album/calling-all-demons
Born To Hula - Tales Of Love (Born To Hula) - Obviously QOTSA influenced, I think from Greece.http://borntohula.bandcamp.com/
Zodiac N Black - The Aftermyth (Zodiac N Black) - London stoner/desert rock, but very polished. Still wrapping my head around the sound to decide how much I like 'em. Doomantia - http://www.doommantia.com/2012/05/zodiac-n-black-aftermyth.htmlhttp://zodiacnblack.bandcamp.com/album/the-aftermyth
Psyconauts - Planet X (Psyconauts) - Italian space rock.http://psyconauts-stoner.bandcamp.com/
Stoned Jesus - Seven Thunders Roar (Moon) - Ukranian stoner/psych. Cover art has uncanny similarity to Ancestors' Of Sound Mind. A tribute?http://stonedjesus.bandcamp.com/releases

True, that rascally Sabaton just slipped into the brood like a Cuckoo bird.
Any of you fans of The Devil's Blood and Blood Ceremony heard the Jess and the Ancient Ones? I'd think this would be an ILM favorite, given how high the aforementioned bands placed in the metal poll. Perhaps because it's a debut from Finland, and not a lot of coverage yet. You can get the CD/vinyl with free shipping for $15 or under from Svart, and tack on Uncle Acid & the Deadbeats if you don't already have that - http://www.svartrecords.com/shoppe/1018-jess-and-the-ancient-ones-cd.html
Orcus Chylde (World Of Sound) Jun 15I'm listening to this right now on the Soggy Bog cast - http://thesoggybogofdoom.podomatic.com/entry/2012-05-01T20_53_52-07_00. I don't normally listen to podcasts, but this is a great one, with Mastodon covering Feist (!), new Candlemass and Ahab, Terra Firma, Burning Saviours, Abramis Brama, etc. New six piece band from Germany, this review mentions Graveyard and Witchcraft, but a bit more dreamy with organ bits.
Kadavar (Tee Pee) Jul 10Just as good but more raucous and garagey is Kadavar from Berlin. The vinyl is already available on import from This Charming Man, and comes out in the U.S. on Tee Pee. I love the sound of the drums on this. The label drops names like Sabbath, Hawkwind and Witchfinder General. "You can’t reinvent the wheel, but you can roll it!"
Trippy Wicked & the Cosmic Children of the Knight - Going Home - St Albans band formed in 2006, and play bluesy stoner rock with a touch of sludge/doom, along the lines of Wo Fat. 2009 album Movin On is worth hearing too, both free!http://trippywicked.bandcamp.com/album/going-home
Sun Preachers - Faces Of Ashes - French stoner/psych. Really kicks on on "Nail King". Was free, now a whopping $.50.http://sunpreachers.bandcamp.com/album/faces-of-ashes

Blues Pills - Bliss EP (Crusher)While I die of anticipation for the Spiders album, here is another great rockin' female lead band from the same Swedish label. ATIH blurb: "After departing from Radio Moscow in September 2011, drummer Cory Berry and bass player Zack Anderson joined up with Swedish lead singer Elin Larsson and Swedish drummer Jonas Askerlund. Heavy, driving bass lines, colossal drums (via Jonas Moses Askerlund, drummer of Swedish band Dead Man), and Berry’s ferocious, riff based, soul-penetrating guitar work are a sublime compliment to the vocalist. Tied together by the soulful Elin Larson (sometimes singing in her mother-tongue), her stage presence gives one the impression of being seduced by some Valkyrie’s love song — or maybe her battle cry." On vinyl 10-inch or MP3s on Amazon.

Two great new releases this week, Orcus Chylde and Witch Mountain. The debut from Orcus Chylde is out on Friday June 15. From Germany, they were part of the historic lineup at April's Desertfest in Berlin. They tap into a mix of proto-metal, doom and folk that's usually associated with Swedes like Witchcraft, Dead Man and Sienna Root. Soda Shop Review | Kozmik Artifactz
xp from Rolling Metal - Witch Mountain - Cauldron of the Wild. I'll get one at the show on Saturday. Profound Lore | All That Is Heavy | Amazon

As mentioned previously, Kadavar came out on top of new releases this week. Highly recommended.
Wight - Through The Woods Into Deep Water (Bilocation/Fat & Holy)German stoner/psych band Wight caught my attention last year with Wight Weedy Wight. Their new one just became available last week on Bandcamp at name yr price, and it's a significant step forward. | Soda Shophttp://wight.bandcamp.com/album/through-the-woods-into-deep-water
Ice Dragon - Dream Dragon (Yersinia Pestis)"Ice Dragon is the bonfire in the woods that you and your degenerate friends would try to jump over at the end of the night." Name yr price! Their third album in just over a year. Unstoppable psych/prog/doom madmen. Took me a while to get over their low-fi sound, but am on board now.http://icedragon.bandcamp.com/album/dream-dragon
The Shrine - Primitive Blast (Tee Pee)"I've got no eternity and I've got no past, I've got no destiny man, my future's fading fast, I'm a Primitive Blast" Venice Beach hard rockin' trio The Shrine mix skatepunk, thrash and basic hard rock for their hyperactive sophomore album.
At Devil Dirt - Chapter II - Vulgo gratissimus auctor (At Devil Dirt)Can't believe I didn't mention this earlier. First album was one of my favorites last year. New one has a bit of a darker mood, slower, heavier. Available now for $4, CD out on Aug 31.http://atdevildirt.bandcamp.com/releases
Captain Crimson - Dancing Madly Backwards (Transubstans) Aug 29Also out in Aug, writers can contact the label to review. One of my favorites, they reference proto-metal like Leaf Hound, November, Mountain, and fellow Swedes Witchcraft and Graveyard. This is keeping me entertained just fine while I await new Witchcraft and Spiders. | Soda Shop
Elder - Spires Burn EP (Armageddon)Two-track vinyl-only EP totaling 22:33 of mindbending psychedelic doom. They destroyed at a recent show in Chicago. Wish they'd put it on CD, but MP3s can be found, and short samples available here: http://beholdtheelder.bandcamp.com/

Kogumaza are good, I think they reward concentration if you get me
I saw the Dagger Brothers years ago at a club night. they played after The Bug and came straight on stage as they have no equipment aside from backing tapes; their set consisted of following the MCs (Warrior Queen and possibly Flowdan?) around while they were trying to pack up, and being 'homoerotic' towards in in an unsuccessful effort to provoke them. then one of them jumped off the stage and broke a girl's ribs. also I was introduced to one of them a long time after this and in lieu of shaking my hand he bit it hard enough to break the skin
anyway I just wanted to mention I hate them

Ones that didn't make it into this list are still probably brilliant. Also, it's not clear when the 'Bang the Bore' stuff is on but if you get a chance to see Bolide, who are involved with that, then do. If you like poetry even a little bit then go and see Keston Sutherland. If you like poetry more than a little then also go and see Francesca Lisette and Alan Hay.
