I've got my tracks ballot more or less sorted, need to whittle the LPs down. I usually find ranking tracks more difficult but I did this one by gut instinct.

i get the feeling metal wont be anywhere near the dominant genre here
Are you expecting indie rock to dominate? I think metal and prog will probably be well-represented on my ballot. Nothingface will likely make the top 5.
― EveningStar (Sund4r), Monday, 3 September 2012 18:20 (eleven years ago) link
Straight-ahead punk rock and hardcore (excluding stuff like early emo or Fugazi or Husker Du) will get the least representation. I'm actually a little curious how that stuff will place.
― EveningStar (Sund4r), Monday, 3 September 2012 18:23 (eleven years ago) link
I'll vote for Crass and Nomeansno too. So maybe I'm making false distinctions. I'm thinking of, I dunno, Agent Orange or Social Distortion or 7 Seconds or something, none of whom I know well. Maybe they're all awesome.

They are great, but like Swans, people are split between early stuff and later 80s material. Unlike Swans though, most of the90s stuff is shit. Though I still like Independent Worm Saloon, but it wasn't as good as the preceding albums.
― VOTE in the 1980's ROCK POLL PLEASE! (Algerian Goalkeeper)
ot, but listened to the whole buttholes catalog a few times recently and find that i like independent worm saloon a hell of a lot more now than i ever did back then. at the time, i objected to its slickness and accessibility, the way it ditched all the butthole's experimental and most of their oddball tendencies in favor of burly alt-nation metalpunk. funny thing is that i'd always wanted them to do a whole album of stuff like "human cannonball" and "fast". indie hypocrisy at its finest.
like so many albums of the early CD era, it's way too long, but the best tracks are fucking great, and it's definitely leary's best showcase as blues rock guitarist. "the wooden song"! and it's great to finally have a studio version of "strawberry". would definitely vote for it in a 90s version of this poll.

It's hard to say but yeah I expect indie rock like SY/The Cure/REM etc to be top 10. So top half it will dominate . Metal and hardcore might do best in the lower reaches. Can see a lot of it there. The length of the list depends on how many ballots we get.
Will be interesting to see if the Foetus/Death In June/Coil/Current 93/EN type voters show up. So far I dont see any of it showing up judging by participants in the poll and I get the feeling fans of those bands wont click on the thread "oh its just rock indie or metal"
Maybe if some of us revived threads on those bands it might help?Still, you cant force anyone to open threads. I'm sure there's a lot of poll fatigue around.
Still think we will get good results and the more who vote the better they will be, especially fans of those smaller cult lesser known/talked about bands.
I did post on the foetus thread alerting them.

I dragged my feet getting around to listening to the Butthole Surfers. I was just annoyed by the name and graphics at the time (not sure why I singled them out in particular since there were plenty of other bands I listened to with a similar image). Even when I heard tracks I liked, I didn't follow up; and then even after I saw them live and liked it (probably around 90/91), I still took my time. Then I listened to them a whole bunch in 92-93/4. (In some ways that's the point where I definitively cut down on listening to rock of any sort (not out of principle, just disinterest), so until pretty recently--mid-last-decade--they were the last rock band I got into in a big way.)
― _Rudipherous_, Monday, 3 September 2012 18:44 (eleven years ago) link
I don't think they get enough credit nowadays. When i got into music in the early 90s them and Husker Du and The Replacements were godlike.

Which probably meansthe poll will be a mix of bands who were important to people at the time and then bands who have survived/joined the 'canon' for young people to discover.

I never liked/got Husker Du except for their Eight Miles High (which is one of my favorite things ever) and their cover of "Ticket to Ride." I must not have known anyone into the Replacements, because I hardly remember hearing about them much at the time (while, on the other hand, knowing someone who had everything by Husker Du and Sonic Youth, and some others), though I like exactly one of their songs. So much of my listening was dictated by terrestrial radio at that point, so it could be hit and miss. (Maybe I was just always out of the room when certain bands were announced?)

I listened to "Silver Rocket" and "100%" on headphones this morning. Right away, the drums and vocals sound clearer and crisper on "100%". Generally, higher frequency response seems better. Also, the individual parts are more clearly separated and spatialized.
I wonder if there's a mastering problem with the currently in-print versions of DN. The snare drum is really distorted.
Anyway, as I mentioned, Goo was done in part at the same studio with the same producer and I think parts of that are where they really nail that sound. Dirty has a wider frequency range, but the high frequency response sounds hyper-real to me - like if I heard those guitars in a room, they wouldn't sound like that. I'd be curious to know what the comparison is between the mid-range output on Goo and Dirty.

Listening more, I think Goo might even go too far. A track "Disappearer" feels at first like it has a nice amount of high-end output, but I end up thinking that the comfortable range of Daydream Nation is being stretched.
― timellison, Monday, 3 September 2012 20:31 (eleven years ago) link
I keep thinking of the third Velvet Underground album. No one's going to wish for more high end on that - there's plenty. And yet, there's something really comfortable about the whole range of sound.

Sorry to keep harping on the Butthole Surfers, but I just wanted to add I never really associated them with the bands who got lumped together as "lo fi," although I don't think I realize that lo fi was a thing until fairly late.
Also, I remember gareth (does he still post here--I have no idea what his name is these days if so) discovering them years ago and seemingly being surprised by how interesting they were in terms of pure sound. I don't know, I may be misremembering this. They were much more of an experimental and psychedelic band than some might guess. (I think I may have expected them to be narrowly hardcore punk back before I'd heard anything by them.)

i didn't vote for any Death In June, but NWW, Neubauten, Coil, Swans and Foetus all feature prominently in my top 20 albums and 3 of them are in my top 5. C93 and Young Gods also feature lower down. i ended up missing out some albums i love by these acts more than albums by other people so my poll wasn't dominated by a just few artists. i'm guessing the upper echelons of this poll will all be records i've never heard.

yup, the only metal i know (apart from the very odd slayer and metallica track) is the NWOBHM stuff listed. i had about 250 albums and a similar number of tracks in my initial list that i had to whittle down to 50. i ended up getting completely obsessed with it and stayed up 'til 6am doing this. ha!
indeed. it didn't get the no. 1 spot though.

I wonder if Dog Latin can find any 'Deconstructionist' Music in these nominations hehe. It does seem an 80s thing. Of course I do not have any knowledge of Jacques Derrida so have no idea really what DL's on about, but does NWW count?

stirmonster you and aldo really make me regret not doing the 100 votes (that is what we used in the all-time metal poll and I think last years jazz poll I ran was the same).I didn't think there was enough nominations compared to previous polls so thought I'd be the only one who did a top 100. Oh well..
Yeah that Ministry album we're talking about, I checked it out because of you posting about it years and years ago on ILM. It was the only one I hadn't heard and it blew me away. it made me appreciate the direction they kept taking. Going a bit further each time; though I realise that was a less interesting direction for you.

cool! i LOVE the two albums that followed it but then lost interest.
― stirmonster, Tuesday, 4 September 2012 16:45 (eleven years ago) link
yeah nothing to stop people posting their longlists after the results in the post your ballots thread. That is a highlight for a lot of people as they love checking out ballots so why not longlists?
ps stirmonster I have a reputation for doing large roll-outs (ie not restricted to 100 albums) because I believe that the smaller unknown albums lower down deserve their 15 mins. If I do a top 50 or a top 100 then post full results, that period in time during the run out where someone clicks the Spotify link is lost, as it wont happen to the same extent when just posting full lists. And certainly the discussion between the albums is lost too.For me the order of results are irrelevant it's about introducing new music to ilxors who haven't heard it. I love seeing the excitement of ilxors discovering great albums for the first time. That is job done for me. And I feel a longer rollout does that best. A lot of others like it too, those who dont and just want their taste confirmed in the consensus at the top of the poll can join in later.
Already on this thread I've seen excited posts about discovering Candlemass , Saint Vitus & Trouble. That is why I urge people to talk about bands and albums rather than just voting and waiting. Stan for those tracks and albums, it means others will check them out and probably give them a vote. I want to introduce people (inc myself!) to music I haven't heard. So lets share!
Isn't that the point?

Stirmonster It was Filth Pig where I lost interest. Dunno if it will sound better now (compared to what came after) but after the run of amazing albums they had, it sure pissed me off at the time.

ahh nakh, I didn't realise that's what it was. I remember Scritti Politti/Derrida discussions on early ILM and I thought that was what he was after. Not actual deconstruction rock music. It was an interesting idea though so yes Dog Latin is a very valuable poster on ILM.

Interesting since I'd consider the 80s the worst decade for heavy rock if you don't include metal. I'd think this would be redundant to include metal, since that poll was already covered. I guess I'll put metal albums in my ballot otherwise I won't be able to come up with enough. Especially since a lot of what I'd choose are not on the ballot. My fault, I was consumed with my migration to database project and missed that whole thread. But here's what I'd have included:

I have tried to make clear to people it's not a metal poll since I know lots of people might assume it is because I run metal polls, but I don't want metal to be ignored. A nice good mix of great albums in many styles would be great!

― Jessie Fer Ark (Mobbed Up Ping Pong Psychos), Tuesday, 4 September 2012 20:42 (eleven years ago) link
I'm not sure what you're asking but you can copy & paste the nominations to notepad or whatever and work your way down the list and copy and paste albums or tracks you feel you want to vote for. And if you have more than 50 then delete the ones you might think aren't quite as important to vote foras others until you get down to 50.
Then you need to decide whether you want to order them (weighted ballot) 1 -50 (do not put numbers on voting form)(Unweighted ballot) just list 50 albums or tracks and give them all equal points(split ballot) Rank some then have the rest given equal remaining points.

OK... I got them down under 100 by absolutely getting down to the things I would vote in top 10. Then pasted them into an Excel type programme (it was open office calc for me) starting in column b. Then I wrote in column a what number I would genuinely vote for them to be - in isolation, not with respect to anything else. Then sorted by column a and resorted then renumbered.
The end result was things I never would have thought of being cut got cut, but things I love ended up where they should have been. I'm actually pretty happy with how it ended up.

― Hellhouse, Thursday, 6 September 2012 22:37 (eleven years ago) link
I suppose it's because they want to influence the poll rather than vote for something nobody else will and regret not having pushed something up several places by voting for it.
BUT THAT IS WHY YOU TALK ABOUT AND RECOMMEND ALBUMS ON HERE. Boostering works! You can't complain albums dont make it in the results if you didn't bother campaigning for them in this thread.

it's strictly pragmatic. i really love "candle opera" by claw hammer, even posted a video i made in the youtube thread, but i can't imagine that anyone else will vote for it no matter what i say or do. would rather devote a few points to something i genuinely like that could use the boost. "born too late", for instance...

no, it's not an inquisition. obviously no one needs to answer me. it's a very simple question about the perceived meaning (in the context of ILM) of having one of your noms on the final list. it's not a vast, unsolvable mystery, just a point of curiosity.
― Hellhouse, Thursday, 6 September 2012 23:29 (eleven years ago) link
well, a stone cast into a well that results in a slight change in ILM poll rankings can at least claim to have had an effect on the world. otherwise, it's nothing but the act of casting a stone into a well.

I'm just interested in the divergence between attempting to be a tastemaker and accurately representing oneself. I mean, everyone is going to be able to publish their ballots at the end of the poll, so even a wildly thrown stone is going to have an effect.

I think, from previous polls experience, that some ILXors always regret not giving points to an album that finished lower down than expected. However if you vote for your favourites and campaign on these threads for them, you might find unexpected albums/tracks making it.Also remember that in previous polls I've gone beyond a top 100 (as long as enough people vote) so that these albums do do get in the rundown therefore voting for obscure favourites high up on your ballot combined with campaigning is not a pointless exercise after all. I always find the lower reaches of lists to be by far the most interesting. My polls are not about who wins but what less unknown/obscure/cult albums get in the lower reaches.
But obviously you can vote as you please. There is no set way. Just please vote and campaign on the thread for albums/tracks.

I agree with your point about the more colorful lower reaches of the poll, hence my question about the the urge to push up liked tracks at the expense of (probably more interesting) beloved tracks that may not get voted for at all (and therefore not even be represented in these lower reaches).

from 88 - 92 skullflower were a nasty driven lo-fi psych rock band, then they dropped the rock part and spent 20 years making vaguely differentiated noise records

Holy fucking shit, I'm scanning the remastered deluxe edition of Daydream Nation on iTunes. It sounds so phenomenally better than the 90s Geffen CD I'm used to that I'm a little in shock. The noise break on "Silver Rocket", which I'd thought of as lazy and lacklustre, has so much more detail to it.
― EveningStar (Sund4r), Friday, 7 September 2012 20:53 (eleven years ago) link

since we can't post youtubes itt, and as there hasn't been much discussion in the designated tube thread, i'm gonna do a little campaigning for a few forgotten favorites. if you want to hear any of this stuff, videos of most tracks have been posted here.
BAND OF SUSANS - HARD LIGHTone of my favorite songs of the 80s. band of susans are remembered mostly for stomping guitar machine dance tracks like "hope against hope" and for the heavy metallic din they eventually tunneled into, which makes this yearning, careening pop song somewhat unique in their catalog. should at the very least have been a minor 120 minutes hit, but the band's brief moment had arguably passed by the time love agenda was released, and they buried it near the back anyway. at 2:43 half the layered noise drops out, and susan stenger sings: "i jerk awake, from the distant isle of sleep / dawn cracks, there's a hard light in place of your dreaming face." pins my hair back every time.
CLAW HAMMER - CANDLE OPERAi'm not sure why i like this song as much as i do. it's more than a little ridiculous, with john wahl yowling like a cat in a lawnmower over greasy, brawling bar band blues rock. i remember being repulsed by it when i first picked up the single, and for a long time preferred "drop", the more agreeably punk-rocking b-side. but "candle opera" wouldn't leave me along. i found myself singing about "long long hair to his shoulders" and "eyes oh those penetrating eyes" as i went about my daily business. it's catchy, despite the grotesque surfaces, and the hairy-chested yawping seems to suit the subject matter. hippie satanists getting freaky in the basement under the laundromat.
DEAD MOON - DEAD MOON NIGHTdead moon eventually became emblematic of rock as an ideal, and the romantic celebration of their endurance and purity sometimes eclipses the fact that they wrote some amazing goddam songs. "dead moon night" was their first real anthem, and i still think it's the best thing they ever did. like a lot of my favorites here, what i like best about it is the way the music and lyrics combine to create something electrifying that isn't fully present in either. i get chills when fred and toody's voices crack into one another on the chorus: "D for disaster, E for my eye, A for my anger, D before i die!" i don't know why it hits me like it does, but it does, every time.

I was very surprised by that Band of Susans song! That Youtube thread is getting pretty damn unwieldy. Maybe it's best for us to just rep for songs/albums here? Everyone knows how to find something on Youtube.

Trying to pick my votes has got me wanting to go dig out my old Black Flag mp3s. The song of theirs I can most clearly remember is "Spraypaint" and Hank's growling makes my hair stand up on end a little.
I'd like to rep for Nomeansno's Wrong, one of the most focused and intimidating punk albums I've ever heard. It's got all the threat of violence and chaos of classic 70s punk, but channeled into rehearsed, tight musicianship and thoughtful lyrics. And they eschew conventional sonic structures, playing odd times, sudden tempo shifts, and seamless jazz breaks. "Tired of Waiting" is like a lit fuse, and then the explosion is a single spoken sentence.

Yeah, the snare drum sound is still frustrating on the remaster. Everything was like that on the 90s CD, seriously!
I better listen to the remastered Loveless. That's an album that I thought could use a good remastering.

It's kind of funny to think of Husker Du albums being remastered. I associate their sound so much with the lo-fi bled-through washout.

Oh weird, listening to "'Cross the Breeze" now, I feel like things are actually more distorted on the remaster. Maybe the increased volume just made it more immediate on the first listen or at least made everything a bit more audible? Hm. Potential audiophile fail. I'll have to give it time.
― EveningStar (Sund4r), Saturday, 8 September 2012 01:43 (eleven years ago) link
I dunno, I still feel like stuff sounds kind of distant on the old CD.
― EveningStar (Sund4r), Saturday, 8 September 2012 01:45 (eleven years ago) link
Yeah, drums are worse on the new.
― EveningStar (Sund4r), Saturday, 8 September 2012 01:47 (eleven years ago) link
interesting. i have the early 90s geffen CD and remember it clipping at certain sections, nothing too dramatic but the distortion was kind of displeasing at high volumes. as i recall drums sounded just fine tho. anyway 9 times out of 10 the new remasterings alter the essence of certain albums to a ridiculous degree and the supposed improvement in terms of sound quality is at least questionable.

Yeah, I guess it's not so much that the drums distort on the 90s disc as that they just seem more distant than they should be to me. (Compare to the drums on Murray Street, especially the presence of the bass drum. Or Scorpions' Taken by Force, which I think is an example of an excellent recording of a heavy rock band from even earlier than SY.) Vocals are a bit like this too. On the remaster, this seems like it's corrected a little but it's at the cost of even more clipping. I guess hearing things in a slightly different way just made it seem a bit new and made the album seem more exciting the first time.
― EveningStar (Sund4r), Saturday, 8 September 2012 13:02 (eleven years ago) link
The third Velvets, which Tim mentioned above, is another good reference point.
― EveningStar (Sund4r), Saturday, 8 September 2012 13:26 (eleven years ago) link
This is the whole point of heavy compression and limiting; they're applied to make the recordings seem louder and more exciting and vivid, often at the expense of sound quality (which leads to listening fatigue over longer listening sessions). The liberal use of compression used to be more a feature of commercial radio (and singles destined for commercial radio), where it makes sense in terms of grabbing the listeners' very short attention spans, but over the past, say, fifteen years, listeners in many genres have come to expect a certain loudness from their music as a somewhat ironic signifier of high production values, and many records have been remastered several times over the years to match continually evolving expectations of loudness (which after being on the ascent for years, appear to be leveling off after considerable publicity about the "loudness war" and its toll on sound quality).
― Hellhouse, Saturday, 8 September 2012 14:40 (eleven years ago) link
I mean, all of this is obvious and well-known, but I don't think it's merely the "newness" of the remaster that made it seem more exciting.
― Hellhouse, Saturday, 8 September 2012 14:43 (eleven years ago) link
Things aren't remastered just to make them louder, of course. I'm sure sund4r is right that there's improved fidelity with the DN remaster, too. It's just a shame if it is indeed clipping and if the dynamic range was squashed.
― timellison, Saturday, 8 September 2012 15:23 (eleven years ago) link
I think remastering jobs used to be more properly focused on restoring and reviving older recordings and actually making them sound better, but so many remastering jobs these days (especially on fairly recent recordings) seem to be almost exclusively concerned with meeting contemporary expectations of volume (they also seem to be perceived as an opportunity to repackage a record, pick up a little publicity and sell a few more copies, especially to people who already own the record). I'm sure you're also aware of the fact that in an A-B listening test, the louder recording will almost always be picked as the superior sounding recording, even if the two recordings are identical in every other way. But I'm not at all doubting sund4r's experience. I'm just not surprised that a recently remastered recording can seemingly sound both better and worse.
/Zzzzz...
― Hellhouse, Saturday, 8 September 2012 16:20 (eleven years ago) link
Some recordings are horribly quiet and need to be made louder. Just not all recordings need made louder for the hell of it.

― Sick Mouthy (Scik Mouthy), Saturday, 8 September 2012 16:38 (eleven years ago) link
You're 100% right. I'm not actually an audiophile purist when it comes to these things. For instance, I would gladly take fuller, louder (even slightly clipped!) SST records over what's currently available. My only original point is that records seem to be remastered at a much faster pace these days, and for sometimes dubious reasons, and that I'm not surprised that an initially exciting remastering job seems less-than-great over an extended listening period.
― Hellhouse, Saturday, 8 September 2012 16:43 (eleven years ago) link
I'm also under the impression that Reign in Blood has been remastered about ten times, but I can't find the info atm.

For anyone who hasn't heard it, I'd like to rep for Voivod's Nothingface: I can't think of anything else that sounds quite like this. Manages to synthesize thrash, prog, punk, and postpunk art rock into a spaced-out angular sci-fi math rock that still rocks really hard. On-a-dime stops and starts, choppy chordal inversions, nasal but tuneful vocals. Highlights, nominated on the tracks list: "Missing Sequences", "The Unknown Knows"
Also try the two Sharrock albums for post-Hendrix jazz guitar noise. Seize the Rainbow has plenty of riffing rock. Guitar is more droney guitar smear.
― EveningStar (Sund4r), Saturday, 8 September 2012 23:53 (eleven years ago) link
Did you nominate the Fushitsusha and Keiji Haino, Hellhouse? They're great.
Also repping for Queensryche's Operation: Mindcrime: Operatic, sample-happy high-concept pomp-metal with virtuosic vocals. Highlight on tracks list: "The Needle Lies". The Fates Warning is worth checking out too.

Kind of funny listening to Evol after all this discussion about Sonic Youth and production and after listening to all these other noisy 80s albums. It's lo-fi but also really 80s in a way: almost like they were trying to get a Cocteau Twins atmosphere with budget gear. All that reverb!

i see those SY records pretty much as experiments with recording techniques. funny thing is, prob no other band from that era had a run of 5 or 6 albums sounding so different from each other. the EVOL production is too sterile, sure, but bad moon rising sounds absolutely fucked up in a really amazing way. it's like they tried to make a bombastic sounding record with very limited resources and to achieve those goals they viciously pushed everything into the red and didn't look back. so they ended up having the guitars jumping out from the speakers and these mammoth, bonham kinda sounding drums from a parallel universe or something. the cymbal sound in "society is a hole" always gets me and the bass tone is fantastic all through the record. i think nothing beats BMR in terms of twisted, one of a kind production.
― cock chirea, Monday, 10 September 2012 03:03 (eleven years ago) link
yeah i love that about them, that despite certain very specific hallmarks in the band's sound, they were constantly learning how to sound on record or trying different approaches. i would go as far as to say of their first 10 or 11 full-lengths each one had a pretty distinctly different character to its production compared to its predecessors, with one exception (Goo and Daydream being pretty similar)
― some dude, Monday, 10 September 2012 03:08 (eleven years ago) link
Bad Moon Rising is the last of the 80s albums I need to re-listen to for this poll/current revival of obsession. I'm looking forward to it. Does that count as an industrial album btw?
― EveningStar (Sund4r), Monday, 10 September 2012 03:44 (eleven years ago) link
Something I've been thinking about is how much the greater experimentation with e.g. prepared guitar techniques on the band's earliest material (esp the first album) was something they may have just done to compensate for more limited technical proficiency, which they may have abandoned to an extent as they became more comfortable with their instruments and with playing with each other. Thurston has always seemed more passionate about the Ramones and Television than about e.g. Fred Frith or Keith Rowe (favourite albums list: http://www.listology.com/richie-dagger/list/thurston-moores-favorite-albums ). I wonder whether Daydream Nation or even Murray Street may be closer to the album he'd been aspiring to make even early on.
(Also, The Eternal sounds a bit better than I remembered!)
― EveningStar (Sund4r), Monday, 10 September 2012 03:50 (eleven years ago) link
Even if it wasn't Frith and Rowe, it was being passionate about the no wave groups and Branca. Thurston wrote the liner notes to a Swell Maps compilation where he talked about how they seemed to be mixing fairly radical things with, iirc, something like "ahead of its time songcraft awareness," and how that spoke to his own interests at the time.

also, we have until the 27th for albums, right?

i'm glad you pointed that out, i'd assumed from the subject line that the whole thing closed on the 20th
― tylerw, the creatorw (some dude), Thursday, 13 September 2012 03:02 (eleven years ago) link
No It might be the 20th it might be 24th 25th maybe 26th. It all depends on seandalai. It will not be as late as 27th.
but if I were you I'd assume both were finishing on the 20th just incase. I think its been a long enough time to vote and ballots are dropping off now.
hellhouse you seemed to remove stuff I added then added yourself. I cant see cop shoot cop.

wtf does that even mean, christ
― some dude, Thursday, 13 September 2012 03:20 (eleven years ago) link
I don't see any point in extending it and it just means more work for seandalai. better to get it all done and dusted so we can then look for album covers/spotify links. I'm still not sure if Viceroy is going to be able to do the tracks rollout due to his work commitments.
― VOTE in the 1980's ROCK POLL PLEASE! (Algerian Goalkeeper), Thursday, 13 September 2012 03:21 (eleven years ago) link
If we get a long list as usual then I want to start the albums on fri night after the tracks finish. So I am not sure if the 27th gives seandalai enough time to run the results through. if he can assure us then the 27th might be on but I'd much prefer everyone got them in by the 20th just incase. Remember seandalai is a very busy guy.
― VOTE in the 1980's ROCK POLL PLEASE! (Algerian Goalkeeper), Thursday, 13 September 2012 03:25 (eleven years ago) link
ugh just pick a firm date and stick with. if an editor ever told me "it might be due the 13th, or maybe the 17th, we'll see" i would invariably managed to miss whatever the deadline turned out to be.
― some dude, Thursday, 13 September 2012 03:32 (eleven years ago) link
that is why i said everyone should just aim for the 20th for both. Everybody who has sent in a tracks ballot so far has voted for albums at the same time. There's been a few albums only ballots but no tracks only ones.

well things have changed. I've had to do most of this by myself as others have been unavailable. originally there were 3 of us and seandalai is doing me a good turn and i do not want to cause him extra work.

most people have already voted, but I’m gonna take a few seconds to rep for Rhys Chatham’s “Die Donnergotter” anyway. Chatham essentially spends twenty minutes on a blown-out version of “Fur Immer”, layering six guitars over the forward slam of David Linton’s drumming for no-wave motorik sprawl. EIII claims it’s only good live, but this is a foul bag of fuck-filled challops. a thirteen-minute edit can be heard here.
the full version, along with “Guitar Trio” and Waterloo No. 2” from 1987’s Die Donnergotter LP can be found here.

well, you're right about the live version being more exciting, but the studio version remains compelling in some ways because of its stark production.
idk, with Chatham I used to make the obvious comparison to Branca, but the association can be misleading. the title and length and sense of melodic grandeur of Die Donnergotte all suggest similarities w/Branca's symphonies, but the actual guitarwork reminds me a lot of Ut and Mars and early Slovenly, and their dry, plinky riffs. the track's Neu influence is obvious, but take a listen to Ut's Conviction LP, or even this later track from In Gut's House. I mean, I can obviously hear in DD the droning, anthemic qualities that were passed on to Band of Susans, but I can also hear the skeletal riffs and atonal runs passed on to Ut (even though members of both bands may have injected some of those qualities into Chatham's work during their tenure). in other words, while I'm sure in a live setting DD delivers an imposing and choice wash of guitar noise, I can appreciate the studio version and its leaner, more angular sound that references no wave more explicitly, and consequently see the two versions as entirely different animals with different qualities.
but I have the feeling that I've probably said this to you about fifty times, so w/e, fuck it. everyone should own a copy of Guitar Trio, though (looking forward to hearing Chatham's half-hour versions that he's released).

"Die Donnergotter" does sound much better now, like good instrumental postpunk. Tbh, I think I wanted it to be more like Branca at the time. I still think that drum sound is very wrong. "Waterloo" is kind of lame though.

"Waterloo" is kind of lame though.
I'm guessing, but I think Chatham's early work with La Monte Young and Tony Conrad instilled a bias towards psych that Branca doesn't seem to share, and I would relate Waterloo No. 2 to that tendency. on the '87 Homestead LP, Waterloo is sandwiched between DD and Guitar Trio, and I can definitely hear a continuity in the distinctly visceral emphasis on rhythm and texture and repetition (as well as in the alternating currents of melancholy and exuberance that also differentiate Chatham from Branca). (I love Branca's work, btw.)
so Waterloo obviously isn't that far removed from Chatham's other work, but I can see how fans of dense guitarwork might hate it.

You can do it any way you like. There's ranking them 1-50 (weighted)There's Split where you can rank a portion of your choice then have the remainder in any orderThere's unweighted where they all get equal (51 points iirc). But the latter option would mean those who vote for weighted albums will get more points for albums in the top part of their poll whilst yours dont.Split seems to be the popular choice of many.

It was hard/interesting to weigh between things I liked as a kid in the 80s, things I got into later at different stages, and things I was introduced to because of this poll itself. The latter probably got the shortest shrift, even though learning about them has obviously been the most valuable part of the exercise.

― last few days to vote in the 80s rock poll by.. (Algerian Goalkeeper), Monday, 17 September 2012 21:55 (eleven years ago) link
It wasn't exactly tough to make it 50, in either case, though, as much as the final list just seemed short. After I finished ranking things, I just picked the top 50. I did replace "Expressway to Yr Skull" with "For Whom the Bell Tolls" at #50 on the track list because Sonic Youth was already extremely well-represented. Otherwise, I didn't think further.

I've been trawling the blogosphere for rare and OOP 80s recs for this poll, and I ran across a reference to the Tellus cassette magazine series, which I had completely forgotten. after a bit of digging, I found a legit and free archive of all the Tellus cassettes (which are now on MP3). for the uninitiated, Tellus was a NYC-based cassette magazine that ran from '83-'93, and covered a wide range of avant/underground music and sound art. artists such as Sonic Youth, Live Skull, Rat at Rat R, The Scene is Now, Chain Gang, F/i and Rhys Chatham contributed work. the UbuWeb archive also has a huge amount of non-Tellus material from many other avant/underground 80s artists (all of it free). if you're not completely burned out on the 80s, check out the archive.
Tellus index and history:

UbuWeb archive:

(I only found this one ILM Ubuweb thread: Ubuweb tip offs and finds thread)

well the albums list should rollout after the tracks finishes a week on friday. It will run til the following friday. So before a week on friday to be sure. But anything you know will finish high up can come in after that.Best thing to do is to webmail me (include your email so i can reply) with what you might do blurbs for. Then if they place I can get back to you without letting anyone else know somethings placed.

― last few days to vote in the 80s rock poll by.. (Algerian Goalkeeper), Wednesday, 19 September 2012 18:33 (eleven years ago) link
what's 'blurbs' entail?
the polls I've been participating in mostly just show the song title, number of votes and number of #1 placings...maybe a unique photo or a rare performance youtube?
― set the controls for the heart of the sun (VegemiteGrrl), Wednesday, 19 September 2012 18:35 (eleven years ago) link
The EOY polls and other email polls used to have either blurbs about the albums or classic posts copied from the archives. But that is way time consuming and too much on top of the other stuff involved. Hence the ask for help. in the old days of ilm there was a lot of longform posts to choose from which is possibly why people liked blurbs
― last few days to vote in the 80s rock poll by.. (Algerian Goalkeeper), Wednesday, 19 September 2012 18:45 (eleven years ago) link
Also blurbs from a few lines to an essay length help discourse as it encourages it, which supposedly, according to poll haters, the polls suppress. or something.
― last few days to vote in the 80s rock poll by.. (Algerian Goalkeeper), Wednesday, 19 September 2012 18:47 (eleven years ago) link
Though I do understand that a lot of posters prefer to keep their thoughts, especially longform posts on a subject, for their paying gig. But if ANYBODY wants to write a few lines about any album then get in touch as it would be really appreciated. If you cant spare the time then you can always post on the results thread and get a good ilm discussion going. Always good fun.

Voted! Ranked tracks, unranked albums seemed the way to go, fairly stress free. Kinda skewed punk on tracks and metal on albums. And can I say my left hand devil horns are appropriately sore (from furious copy-pasting).

― Grimes, Shoots & Leaves (Mr Andy M), Thursday, 20 September 2012 21:57 (eleven years ago) link
Tracks ballot is the full 50 and much more considered & wide-ranging 'cause I managed to listen to quite a lot of the tracks that I'd not heard before. Still unweighted though.
― Grimes, Shoots & Leaves (Mr Andy M), Thursday, 20 September 2012 21:58 (eleven years ago) link
not really as i reckon i was born without a nostalgia gene and still listen to most of the things i nominated fairly often. i was a big nwobhm fan from the age of about 12 to 13, and i did get an odd twinge of nostalgia for that stuff on the list as i only ever dig out my girlschool, angel witch etc. records about once every 5 years if i'm very drunk.
but, i did find this poll experience (which i don't usually partake in, hence missing the nominations thread) very thrilling, even though i am convinced when i see the results it will appear as if it is a metal poll.

I think we all know what is quite likely to be top 50 but there will be surprises I'm sure. There is always some incredibly unexpected high placings and stuff that is expected to be top 20 but misses out completely. It is really hard to tell what will be in an ILM poll as there are lots of big posters on here who do not vote in polls but people associate them with ilx taste. Some fans of genres just dont vote either (see extreme metal fans)

I was thinking afterwards that while I voted for several Maiden tracks, I didn't rank them highly enough. And somehow Number of the Beast slipped off my albums list when I made the final cut, which is criminal.

― Arvo Pärt Chimp (Neil S), Friday, 21 September 2012 15:51 (eleven years ago) link
Dirty rules. It's certainly their 'heaviest' and contains my fave song 'Chapel Hill'. Might be my 4th or 5th fave SY album.

xpost there was hardly any AC/DC to vote for so YOU'RE WRONG
― set the controls for the heart of the sun (VegemiteGrrl), Friday, 21 September 2012 15:55 (eleven years ago) link
can't stand daydream nation or goo, feel like those albums are actively trying to irritate me. went through a period where I listened to goo frequently, trying to figure out if they were on some whole other level that I wasn't grasping, but no I just hate that record. think dirty is pretty OK actually.
― vincent black shadow giallo (Edward III), Friday, 21 September 2012 15:58 (eleven years ago) link
Do any current pitchforkian/nme bands come from the Sonic Youth lineage these days?
This is what I was getting at upthread. I wonder how much under-25 Pitchfork readers even still recognize Sonic Youth as a great band.
― EveningStar (Sund4r), Friday, 21 September 2012 16:05 (eleven years ago) link
Maybe like Oneida fans?
― EveningStar (Sund4r), Friday, 21 September 2012 16:07 (eleven years ago) link
Even they're 15 years old.
― EveningStar (Sund4r), Friday, 21 September 2012 16:28 (eleven years ago) link
People who read pitchfork like Oneida?
― Algerian Goalkeeper, Friday, 21 September 2012 16:28 (eleven years ago) link
All the Oneida fans I know are old fans - stoner rockers.
There's certainly no pitchforkian bands with the lineage of Big Black.
― Algerian Goalkeeper, Friday, 21 September 2012 16:32 (eleven years ago) link
this being ilx, i suspect its highly possible (if not likely) that Sister will place over DDN.
― Broney, Pt. 1 (Pillbox), Friday, 21 September 2012 16:33 (eleven years ago) link
I dunno DDN usually tops these things even SY albums polls.
― Algerian Goalkeeper, Friday, 21 September 2012 16:39 (eleven years ago) link
Maybe SST will dominate then if it does
Actually ILM *IS* SST Central, isn't it?
― Algerian Goalkeeper, Friday, 21 September 2012 16:41 (eleven years ago) link
Daydream Nation kinda bores me! I get why people like it but it's def not my favorite SY.
― gesange der yuengling (crüt), Friday, 21 September 2012 16:47 (eleven years ago) link
Actually ILM *IS* SST Central, isn't it?? I never got this impression.
― EveningStar (Sund4r), Friday, 21 September 2012 17:04 (eleven years ago) link
There is definitely a big SST contingent. Admittedly not as large as Sonic Youth or New Order ones but it's there.
― Algerian Goalkeeper, Friday, 21 September 2012 17:18 (eleven years ago) link
yeah I'm assuming daydream nation, double nickels, and damaged will be top 10
― vincent black shadow giallo (Edward III), Friday, 21 September 2012 17:21 (eleven years ago) link
Maybe all the Sonic Youth tracks and albums will take all the top positions, lol.
― Algerian Goalkeeper, Friday, 21 September 2012 17:28 (eleven years ago) link

AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAARRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRGGGGGGGGGGGGGGHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH

if it makes you feel any better, here's a rip of the first swans EP from vinyl, sounds better than the muddy remasters that were done in 1990 imo

Def Leppard's an interesting case. Now, I'd probably put on On Through the Night before Hysteria but Hysteria has so much more sentimental value and I know it so well that I couldn't not vote for it.

I def meant the two SY albums when I said SST was going to fill out the top 5, but it was an unfair jibe since one of the SST Sonic Youth records made my top 3...
I def predict Swans are going to do very well, which is what happens when you release the unofficially unanimous album of the present year. I'm thinking Children of God will be top 10
― ^loves belaboured seething (Drugs A. Money), Saturday, 22 September 2012 05:14 (eleven years ago) link

yes, it would, although i do own this which i bought in my brief nwobhm phase and which i am delighted to see goes for crazy money.
