i'm allergic to maroon 5 but a pretty solid top ten otherwise. (i also like a good deal of these more than SUBG)

50. N Sync - "Pop"
49. Kelly Clarkson - "Walk Away"
48. Fergie - "Clumsy"
45. Christina Aguilera - “Fighter”
43. The Veronicas - "Untouched"
42. Dido - "White Flag"
40. Dream - “He Loves U Not”
37. Paris Hilton - "Nothing In This World"
34. Ashlee Simpson - "La La"
33. Avril Lavigne - "Sk8er Boi"

6. Britney Spears - "Toxic"
4. Lady Gaga - "Bad Romance"
3. Vanessa Carlton - "A Thousand Miles"
2. Kylie Minogue - "Love At First Sight"

^^i'll actively rep for all those songs - that's quite a lot, which makes this a strong list in my eyes. "toxic" is one of the lesser numbers in there, tbh.

with pop it's always obvious which are the "approved" songs it's "okay" to like, whether because they became pop culture monoliths through sheer force of commerce or because of dodgier indiecrit reasons - but the fact that people have such kneejerk reactions is really proof that basic antipathy towards pop and its perceived unartisticness/shallowness has never gone away

also why take out "since u been gone"? that is also towards the lesser numbers in this list imo

Kelly was omnipresent during this time period; I think it's safe to say everyone who heard SYBG has heard at least 2 or 3 other Kelly Clarkson singles

even though i had another thread with a similar exclusion -- the Dr. Luke hits poll (no "Since U Been Gone" allowed) -- i kinda wish SUBG was an option, just in keeping with the other threads on these lists

actual vote is 4 'come clean' but kinda lol @ putting 'i gotta feeling' above 'london bridge' - i mean i get it, the former culturally a bigger deal & has become a staple in a way that 'london bridge' never cld but damn if that latter is just so fukken bonkers better

in early drafts "London Bridge" was higher than "I Gotta Feeling," was kind of a last minute change and i won't necessarily defend it

not to be defensive, but i am curious what exactly this means -- in comparison to the other lists i've done for other genres, in comparison to what your personal top 50 would be, etc.?

ORIGINAL DUDE (some dude), Saturday, 7 May 2011 01:29 (thirteen years ago) link

"Glamorous" is great too, kind of lost a coinflip in the 'ok i'm gonna just have three Fergie singles instead of four'

ORIGINAL DUDE (some dude), Saturday, 7 May 2011 01:30 (thirteen years ago) link

i like to hear what omissions people prefer, name names!

ORIGINAL DUDE (some dude), Saturday, 7 May 2011 01:31 (thirteen years ago) link

i think - moreso than with your rap or r&b lists - the fact that you actually engage fully with this kind of music and have your own unique taste and approach to it means your list is going to be personal and throw off others who would just prefer the canon. you got similar reactions to your rock list iirc

not to be defensive, but i am curious what exactly this means -- in comparison to the other lists i've done for other genres, in comparison to what your personal top 50 would be, etc.?

most of yr other top 50 lists felt like a better overview of the genres they were covering even granting the fact that theyre expressions of personal taste this one is too scattershot & its interpretation of 'pop' is probably too narrow

also most of the songs are just really terrible so

Lamp, Saturday, 7 May 2011 01:34 (thirteen years ago) link

what would be a broader interpretation of 'pop' though? what artists did i give the shaft?

ORIGINAL DUDE (some dude), Saturday, 7 May 2011 01:35 (thirteen years ago) link

actually, and i'm not going to go to your other lists to back this up but, i'd bet you have more repeat artists on this list than any other one? seems kind of light on novelty hits too, which is probably what most people expect when they're about to read a pop list

yeah there's definitely a lot of repeat artists here and it's very much a product of my favorites and biases, i will cop to that. i'm just curious what definition of contemporary pop (not counting stuff on the other lists) could make this list seem 'narrow,' just because for me Norah Jones and All-American Rejects and the Shakira and Feist and Fergie and Dido span a pretty wide spectrum.

ORIGINAL DUDE (some dude), Saturday, 7 May 2011 01:44 (thirteen years ago) link

well you couldve included more old ppl/lol yuppie pop - 'leave your boyfriends behind' charted didnt it? or that irish piano ballad - but its also weird that stuff like 'gold digger' or 'crazy' doesnt 'count'. theres also all the pop country trax that were giant hits idk looking at the billboard top 100 for the last decade so many of the songs were covered in yr rap & rnb lists so, sure, youre drawing from a narrower pool.

really the biggest exclusion were sorta-indie trax that seemed to 'cross over' imo

Lamp, Saturday, 7 May 2011 01:47 (thirteen years ago) link

sugar ray

iatee, Saturday, 7 May 2011 01:49 (thirteen years ago) link

Feist was kind of my token representative for indie crossover -- how many other examples of that are there, though, that wouldn't have fit better on the rock list?

ORIGINAL DUDE (some dude), Saturday, 7 May 2011 01:51 (thirteen years ago) link

I like this list. Off the top of my head my own list probably would include:

Britney Spears - Born To Make You Happy (00s by a whisker)
Backstreet Boys - Shape Of My Heart
Taylor Swift - "Love Story" and "Tim McGraw"
Justin Timberlake - Rock Your Body
Jessica Simpson - A Public Affair (and maybe "I Think I'm In Love")
Kylie Minogue - The One
Daniel Bedingfield - If You're Not The One
Madonna - Get Together
Blue - If You Come Back In My Life
Mandy Moore - I Wanna Be With You
Shakira - Objection (Tango)

Probably wouldn't please Lamp though. I'm not sure why - given the nature of the some dude's previous lists - people would expect this to be "broader".

Tim F, Saturday, 7 May 2011 01:54 (thirteen years ago) link

jason mraz - the remedy
stacir orrico - more to life
michelle branch - everywhere
santana ft rob thomas - smooth / santana - maria maria / santana ft michelle branch - game of love
pink - you make me sick
any number of taylor swift singles

oh & every other sugar ray single

n/as (J0rdan S.), Saturday, 7 May 2011 02:03 (thirteen years ago) link

there'd be at least one or two T-Swift songs on my country list

ORIGINAL DUDE (some dude), Saturday, 7 May 2011 02:06 (thirteen years ago) link

well taylor swift & coldplay were kinda the biggest exclusions (other than kanye) in my mind but this is not really ~important~ to me or anything. the list is both more jarring & less comprehensive imo but i get that there are self-imposed constraints acting to potentially cause that, & that its also inherent in trying to outline a more amorphous 'genre' like pop

mostly i just think a lot of these songs suck, so yeah

Lamp, Saturday, 7 May 2011 02:08 (thirteen years ago) link

"never let you go" - third eye blind

kanye? xp

rough top 15

1. vanessa carlton - a thousand miles
2. hillary duff - come clean

12. lady gaga - bad romance
13. pink - who knew

Chocolate Starfish and the Hot Dog Flavored Water is the third album by Limp Bizkit, released on October 15, 2000 through Interscope and Flip records. It debuted at number one on the Billboard 200, selling 1.05 million copies in its first week,[2] and was the 18th best-selling album of the 2000s in the US.[3]

According to the RIAA website, the album has sold over 6 million copies in the United States alone as of 2008 and an overall 12 million worldwide.[4] It features the singles "My Generation", "Rollin' (Air Raid Vehicle)", "Take A Look Around", "Boiler", and "My Way".

after all the talk upthread about Coldplay etc. not being here because they were on the rock list i thought it went w/o saying that they were on another list (twice!): al ship's top 50 rock singles of the 00s -- which is your favorite?

it's extremely rare for any hard rock/nu-metal band to have top 40 hits no matter how big they are, unless it's w/ a power ballad (which the Bizkit didn't really do)

Pretty surprising how similar this list is to the one I would create, I count somewhere between 15 and 20 that would be in my own top 50 pop singles of the 00s. I actually voted for "Come Clean" here, though it's close between that, "Love at First Sight", and "Bye Bye Bye"

2. Kylie Minogue - "Love At First Sight" - awesome, one of her best
4. Lady Gaga - "Bad Romance" - likewise
13. N Sync - "Bye Bye Bye" - enjoy this a good deal
50. N Sync - "Pop" - just a shade below "bye bye bye" but still good
9. Madonna - "Don’t Tell Me" - like this alright, but not even close to a Madonna top 25

the rest of these are almost uniformly yawn/zzzzzz or total shit.. though to be fair, i've not heard maybe 10 of them

I think there is a certain air of absolute joyful plenitude and completeness and can-this-be-happening ecstaticness that a lot of disco-pop/house-pop anthems aspire to and that "Love At First Sight" actually nails.

Something like "Come Into My World" is going for a different vibe of escapist dreaminess (closer to "Can't Get You Out Of My Head", though that's slightly different again).
