ILX Metalheads : Do you want a best of 2010 Metal Poll ?

Look, there's a difference between periodically reminding people to vote and hassling. You were doing the latter. As you've seen, people here seem happy to vote. Give it a shot without the constant bugging. See how it works.

xp I'm in a better mood this year.

Moving Pixels (J3ff T.), Wednesday, 8 December 2010 18:06 (thirteen years ago) link

Last year all we did was keep thread bumped, there was no chat about it in chatz or anything. There was no hassling but you still complained!

pfunkboy (Herman G. Neuname), Wednesday, 8 December 2010 18:07 (thirteen years ago) link

I don't listen to any metal past about 1976, sorry. Actually I'm always interested to check something out from these end-of-year polls, I have more faith in ilx than, say, Terrorizer to give me good recommendations.

Satantango! (Matt #2), Wednesday, 8 December 2010 18:12 (thirteen years ago) link

Your memory is even more faulty than mine -- you CONSTANTLY bugged people in chat who had expressed NO INTEREST IN METAL to vote. Jokingly or not, it was still annoying. keeping the thread bumped and, say, a weekly reminder in the metal thread are probably sufficient.

My biggest problem is with the nominations process -- it really annoys me when I want to vote for something but I can't because of clerical error or oversight or, admittedly, my own not paying attention.

Also, bitching about poll results is half the fun.

Moving Pixels (J3ff T.), Wednesday, 8 December 2010 18:25 (thirteen years ago) link

Yeah, I think maybe we make it a little easier by cutting the nomination process and just let people vote? I'm not sure how much harder this makes it on the organizers, but I see two benefits - 1) no one bitches about missing out on something they wanted to vote for and 2) I think it will help the whole poll process seem less labororious and encourage more people to vote. I mean, most people would be able to whip up a quick list, but it becomes much more cumbersome to wade through a nomination list too.

disagree, i like nominations list -- a good reminder of all the albums that were released in a given year

i genuinely thought when i first joined that he was the admin (ilxor), Wednesday, 8 December 2010 18:33 (thirteen years ago) link

I'm fine with the nominations list in theory, but maybe make it optional? Like you can still vote for stuff thats not on it, we just treat it as a recommendation thread for those interested.

I'm just trying to think of a way to streamline the process and encouraging more people to vote. Either way, half the results will be people bitching about which albums are tr00 and kvlt anyway.

YES.

liking this ^^

problem is, people will then vote for stuff that just does not fit the parameters and people will moan like fuck

pfunkboy (Herman G. Neuname), Wednesday, 8 December 2010 18:43 (thirteen years ago) link

tbh, thats going to happen either way

one pretty obvious guy in the obvious (jon /via/ chi 2.0), Wednesday, 8 December 2010 18:46 (thirteen years ago) link

people bitching about nominated albums vs people bitching about placing albums, really

one pretty obvious guy in the obvious (jon /via/ chi 2.0), Wednesday, 8 December 2010 18:47 (thirteen years ago) link

I like Jon's idea a lot. The less effort people have to go through to vote, the more likely they are to vote. And let's face it -- people are going to bitch no matter what you do. it's part of the process.

Moving Pixels (J3ff T.), Wednesday, 8 December 2010 18:49 (thirteen years ago) link

yeah, i say you should just post a list of all the major metal/metal-related releases of the year on thread (for people who want that easy to reference option in picking out their faves). but also allow voters the additional choice of being able to vote for whatever obscurity they like on their ballots.

hipity-hopity muzik ftw! (Ioannis), Wednesday, 8 December 2010 18:53 (thirteen years ago) link

plus metallurgical moaning is always good fun. minerals need love too, man.

hipity-hopity muzik ftw! (Ioannis), Wednesday, 8 December 2010 18:57 (thirteen years ago) link

there will be a lot more "that shouldnt be in this poll" moans if we do that. And you all know some arseholes will vote for something stupid just to be "funny".
There is never a limit to the # of nominations. That way everything gets nominated and stupid shit gets vetoed. So if there's a poll there will be a noms list (plus it means ppl get to check out albums before voting in jan)
Jeff you are the WORST at complaining that albums shouldn't be allowed.

pfunkboy (Herman G. Neuname), Wednesday, 8 December 2010 19:08 (thirteen years ago) link

Kanye for the win!

who cares? most stuff won't place unless it gathers a certain # of votes/points anyway

And you all know some arseholes will vote for something stupid just to be "funny".

WHO CARES

i genuinely thought when i first joined that he was the admin (ilxor), Wednesday, 8 December 2010 19:16 (thirteen years ago) link

no

pfunkboy (Herman G. Neuname), Wednesday, 8 December 2010 19:18 (thirteen years ago) link

if you want people to vote then you should run the poll according to what will encourage ppl to vote! if i ran it myself, i'd make a 2010 metal albums list, but allow albums not "nominated"/listed to be voted for as well

seriously doubt anything not on the main reference list will make the top 30 or so

i genuinely thought when i first joined that he was the admin (ilxor), Wednesday, 8 December 2010 19:38 (thirteen years ago) link

if anything not nominated breaks the top 30 i'll puree my hat and shoes in a blender and wash them down w/ pigs blood

Thought that was the name of Fucked Up's next album.

one pretty obvious guy in the obvious (jon /via/ chi 2.0), Wednesday, 8 December 2010 19:57 (thirteen years ago) link

no, just an outraged ilxor's thread..

pfunkboy (Herman G. Neuname), Wednesday, 8 December 2010 19:59 (thirteen years ago) link

hahaha omg @ that thread

you were serious, dont deny it.

pfunkboy (Herman G. Neuname), Wednesday, 8 December 2010 20:04 (thirteen years ago) link

anyway not much pro-poll stuff here.

pfunkboy (Herman G. Neuname), Wednesday, 8 December 2010 20:30 (thirteen years ago) link

like i said -- make voting easy and the voters will come

i genuinely thought when i first joined that he was the admin (ilxor), Wednesday, 8 December 2010 20:34 (thirteen years ago) link

i think you will find its much easier to have a list to choose from.

pfunkboy (Herman G. Neuname), Wednesday, 8 December 2010 20:35 (thirteen years ago) link

and there will be too many stupid votes. so no.

pfunkboy (Herman G. Neuname), Wednesday, 8 December 2010 20:36 (thirteen years ago) link

results still won't turn out any stupider than any of the year-end lists here:

i genuinely thought when i first joined that he was the admin (ilxor), Wednesday, 8 December 2010 20:38 (thirteen years ago) link

if people want to vote they will, the problem is the metal guys and gals dont want to vote. or are against polls entirely.

pfunkboy (Herman G. Neuname), Wednesday, 8 December 2010 20:38 (thirteen years ago) link

on ilx we do a nominations thread.

pfunkboy (Herman G. Neuname), Wednesday, 8 December 2010 20:38 (thirteen years ago) link

I would vote in this.

sofatruck, Wednesday, 8 December 2010 20:39 (thirteen years ago) link

anyway -- people who want to choose from a comprehensive nominations list can do so. anyone who wants to add something extra (stupid or not) can do so. you can even throw out obvious lol-votes like kanye or whatever.

i genuinely thought when i first joined that he was the admin (ilxor), Wednesday, 8 December 2010 20:39 (thirteen years ago) link

then they complain that i left out votes, not to mention it fucks up the vote count speadsheets meaning extra work, NO.

pfunkboy (Herman G. Neuname), Wednesday, 8 December 2010 20:40 (thirteen years ago) link

If someone says an album has been left out after noms close, they can simply mention it on the thread and ask if they can vote for it. if it meets the criteria then fine.
BUT WE DONT HAVE ENOUGH POTENTIAL VOTERS YET, so its all irrelevant.

pfunkboy (Herman G. Neuname), Wednesday, 8 December 2010 20:41 (thirteen years ago) link

Is the issue really that you don't want to do it because of the clusterfuck of the all-time poll? It's okay to say that instead of saying there's no interest because the same people who never vote aren't going to vote in it. Sounds to me like the usual suspects are all interested.

EZ Snappin, Wednesday, 8 December 2010 20:41 (thirteen years ago) link

Aye, and it's not like about a dozen people on the thread haven't said they're taking part already FFS.

If anything, the obsession shown with four named posters and their contributions makes me feel like it's some special club I can never be part of because I don't post enough so maybe I shouldn't bother.

They don't want to vote, for whatever reason. The rest of us do, and what's more we get something out of the results. There were maybe 10 records in last year's list that I'd either missed or misjudged that the poll made me reevaluate. How is that a bad thing?

progspeed you! black metallers (aldo), Wednesday, 8 December 2010 20:42 (thirteen years ago) link

people will vote, just run the poll. also, try not to come across like such a nominations nazi, people will like you better and not give you as much shit in the results thread, i'm guessing?

<3,
ilxor

i genuinely thought when i first joined that he was the admin (ilxor), Wednesday, 8 December 2010 20:42 (thirteen years ago) link

also do we make it a heavy rock/metal poll to stop people complaining that there's non metal stuff in it? Because lots of stuff in it every year are obviously not actually 'metal'. Like when marnie stern made it and everyone complained.

pfunkboy (Herman G. Neuname), Wednesday, 8 December 2010 20:45 (thirteen years ago) link

Show me one of your regulars who would complain if the Swans album was top 10.

progspeed you! black metallers (aldo), Wednesday, 8 December 2010 20:47 (thirteen years ago) link

if you include heavy rock, people will complain

if you dont include heavy rock, other people will complain

who cares??

i genuinely thought when i first joined that he was the admin (ilxor), Wednesday, 8 December 2010 20:47 (thirteen years ago) link

if we can agree on that then I guess we can just try running it. Dunno if jj is able to do it tho. not heard from him.

pfunkboy (Herman G. Neuname), Wednesday, 8 December 2010 20:47 (thirteen years ago) link

ilxor youre not helping

pfunkboy (Herman G. Neuname), Wednesday, 8 December 2010 20:48 (thirteen years ago) link

well sorry but the most tedious part of this is having you complain about how many ppl are going to complain

i genuinely thought when i first joined that he was the admin (ilxor), Wednesday, 8 December 2010 20:48 (thirteen years ago) link

anyway...... on w/ the poll, i say

i genuinely thought when i first joined that he was the admin (ilxor), Wednesday, 8 December 2010 20:49 (thirteen years ago) link

If there was a ^this button I would have pressed it after nearly all ilxor's posts.

progspeed you! black metallers (aldo), Wednesday, 8 December 2010 20:50 (thirteen years ago) link

i will help out on this if i can but have to be pretty noncomittal in general because wedding prep/dead computer are taking up most of my time/anger, which is why ive been not ilxing much as of late.
