oh, also, I was trying to keep this thread going to see if it would ever match/exceed any the Jay-Z vs Nas threads for sheer length.
I think we're 2/3rds of the way to matching The Original Jay-Z vs Nas Thread...
Unless someone wants to add their opinion to that thread...

Lord Custos Epsilon (Lord Custos Epsilon), Thursday, 31 July 2003 14:30 (twenty years ago) link

Bizarre how much cynicism is going on here. The anti-Dave trend is overkill for a band already on the decline. In case no one noticed, "Everyday" and "Busted Stuff" were commercial flops, and the band has seriously lost its relevance and most of its original fan base. However, I doubt that a thread such as this would even exist had Dave, lets say, died after "Crash" was released. Then there would be threads saying, "Man, remember the DMB? They had some pretty good stuff back in the 90's. Too bad they didnt last long enough for us to seriously lambast and discredit them once they reached critical-pop-mass."

Of course those were the only ones that stuck to your brain, Custos. Probably because it backed up your beliefs that the fans are all idiots. I guess that would make sense though, being that not much sticks to your brain to begin with.

No. I don't know which one is the biggest evah. The number of posts is currently higher. But thats not really relevant.
This thread may have more posts, but they're short "U R All Gay" posts. The Jay-Z Thread takes 5x as long to load because each individual post is more than a paragraph long.

i just realized why, despite having a handful of good songs, i truly cannot stand coldplay. their singer is exactly what you would get if you mixed dave matthews with thom yorke. and coldplay's music is almost the same. as much as i like thom yorke, if he were on his own, he wouldnt be nearly as good. and if he were 50% Dave Matthews he'd be something of an utter annoyance (some will argue that he already is, but i don't think so). the physical, vocal, musical, and fanbase comparisons between Mr. Coldplay and what i would imagine a DM/TY hybrid to be are astounding. i can't believe i never noticed this before.

Felcher (Felcher), Monday, 4 August 2003 15:43 (twenty years ago) link

If so far, we have drawn out our concept of the Dave Matthews Band from the ordinary use of our practical reason, it must by no means be inferred that we have treated them as a concept of experience. On the contrary, when we pay attention to our experiences of human conduct, we meet frequent and - as we ourselves admit - justified complaints that we can adduce no certain examples of the spirit which acts out of pure duty, and that, although much may be done in accordance with the commands of duty, it remains doubtful whether a love for the Dave Matthews Band is done for the sake of duty and so has a moral value.
Hence, at all times, there have been fans who have absolutely denied this presence of this spirit and have ascribed everything to a more or les refined self-love.

Dave Matthews Band smell like poopie. I want to see them get run over by a flaming steamroller. Dave Matthews squeaky, nasal voice and the hystrionic shreiking of the fiddle player makes my dogs ears hurt. The Dave Matthews Band destroys my Faith in God, Man and music.

There. That oughtta bring the pro-DMB crowds back.
Maybe they'll actually try to rebut the Dave Haytas Complaints with something other that "U R All Gay" type comments.*

Your hatred of the last great american band is blind. These guys write great songs. Theyre awesome musicians they can outplay most rock bands(yes im aware jazz guys etc are better). The fact Dave has such a rabid loyal fanbase is proof they are great to me.

But anyhow...back to the debate (even though DMB Fan 1100 will probably never ever read this.)

It's you lot who replied with all the U R All Gay type comments.
False. The ILM only starting making U R All Gay jokes after multiple accusations of being Creed/Slipknot fans. That was hurtful. It perfectly A-OK to be be Gay, but unforgivable in the eyes of God to be a fan of Creed.

Your hatred of the last great american band is blind.
Lets overlook the ambiguity of the grammar (is the last great american band blind?) and dissect the accusation:
I'd like to think that the future holds an undending plethora of Great American Bands, many of whom have not even formed yet. So they are hardly the "Last";
The consensus is that the lead singer sounds like a (muppet|donkey) and the fiddle is a shapeless din. So they are hardly "Great";
I'll skip the words American and Band...even though, for awhile, I thought they were from Canada. (I apologize to any Canadians who find this mistake on my part to be offensive. I meant no disrespect. Please don't send any Mounted Police to rough me up.)
and no, our hatred isn't blind. We had plenty of time to think it over. They are played enough on the radio for us too all have plenty of opportunities to ponder it.

These guys write great songs.
They wrote one good song: "Ants Marching". Everything after that has been smudgy copies of "Ants Marching".

They're awesome musicians...
I'll take your word for it. I've never seen them play live.
Hmmmmm. Though this might explain why the fanbase likes them so much. The Live Experience...
Okay...serious question:
Tell me. Do they sound better live than they do on the radio? And if so, is that what makes them special?

...they can outplay most rock bands (yes im aware jazz guys etc are better).
Hmmm. Interesting....

The fact Dave has such a rabid loyal fanbase is proof they are great to me.
(*Insert Boilerplate "Well, Popularity != Quality. Hitler was popular in the beginning." comment here*)

Or in I Love Music terms: Dave Matthews Band Rocks!
Actually, an ILMer would've said "Dafe Mettews == Grebt!"

...and you still haven't rebutted the specific complaints listed here; you merely barked a "Dave r0x0r!"

The grammar of the sentence you decided to pick on is decidedly unambiguous, Custos! YOU'RE LETTING THE SIDE DOWN.

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Wednesday, 6 August 2003 12:21 (twenty years ago) link

i dunno, if mediocre=great, then does that mean that really good must=law enforced genius?
i can't subscribe to that equation, it makes way too many good bands epic when they're clearly not, and makes the good bands eternally grand...
so, in closing i'd like to say that mediocrity still= eh...or bland.
yr pick.

eedd, Wednesday, 6 August 2003 13:07 (twenty years ago) link

The grammar of the sentence you decided to pick on is decidedly unambiguous, Custos!
the "is blind" clause is poor.

The grammar of the sentence you decided to pick on is decidedly unambiguous, Custos!
the "is blind" clause sticks out like a sore schwantzen.
It would've been stronger and more direct to say "Your hatred is blind. DMB is the Last Great American Band."
Say his old version and then this new version out loud. You'll hear what I mean.

Have you never heard of a prepositional phrase? Good God.

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Wednesday, 6 August 2003 14:39 (twenty years ago) link

Prepositional phrases? Yeah, I heard of them. I thought they had a nice beat, but I couldn't dance to them. I gave them a 65.
Your hatred of...
...the last great american band is blind.

all I know or care about the sentence above is that the last seven words (if you didn't notice the first three) puts a funny mental image of Dafe Mettews with dark glasses a white cane and a seeing eye dog...and above his head is a billboard that says "There Are No Great American Bands Past This Point. Turn Back Now."

Beyond that, I R Thinx Grammar B Boring.

Lord Custos Epsilon (Lord Custos Epsilon), Wednesday, 6 August 2003 17:45 (twenty years ago) link

I don't even know why I'm continuing this conversation, but breaking the sentence at that point shows that either you are willing to sacrifice all credibility for wildly unfunny jokes or you have no idea how English actually works and therefore fit right in with the DMB supporters you are mocking.

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Wednesday, 6 August 2003 19:59 (twenty years ago) link

There's no need to get nasty, Dan.

"but breaking the sentence at that point..."
Are you referring to where I broke it into two sentences 3 posts ago (when I tried to improve the sentence), or when I put the pause between "hatred of" and "the last great" (when I was isolating "the last great american band is blind")?

Lord Custos Epsilon (Lord Custos Epsilon), Wednesday, 6 August 2003 21:38 (twenty years ago) link

Okay, I went to several Dave Matthews Band shows between 1995 and 1999 or so, and what I found was that the biggest attraction (for a large portion of the "fanbase") seemed to be hanging out in the parking lot before the show and getting wasted. This is fine. In fact, just over a year ago, a friend and I went to a venue about two hours before a DMB show, armed with loads of tiaras we'd made from curling ribbon and garlands and, thanks to all the drunk and stoned people, were able to sell all fifty of them (at five dollars a pop) in less than an hour. For this reason, I really can't complain about drunk kids in parking lots.
BUT. I must say that the times I actually did go in to see what this Dave Matthews legendary live music whatever you like to call it was all about, I found that pretty much all of the people around me were just drunkenly shouting, groping each other, passing out, vomiting and drinking more. So OF COURSE they were having a good time, regardless of what was happening on the stage. Anyway, I'd be interested to know how many of these DMB=BEST MUSIC EVER, YOU JUST HAVE TO SEE THEM LIVE google people have been to a Dave Matthews show sober.

kirsten (kirsten), Wednesday, 6 August 2003 22:15 (twenty years ago) link
