perhaps you'd rather Haul Ass to Lollapalooza?*

*i might add that this is actually possible this year, unlike others, altho why anyone would actually want to do so is beyond any of us.

Kingfish (Kingfish), Tuesday, 29 July 2003 18:22 (twenty years ago) link

she is now
I suspect she's more like beef jerky soaked in formaldehyde.

Anyhow: let's recap shall we?

Okay:
the official reasons for hating him as provided by ILM:

  • - "The timbre of Dave's voice is often extraordinarily ugly. He sounds like he's trying to form all of his vowels with the roof of his mouth." (aka "he sounds like a muppet")
  • - "The fiddle-timbre of the violin grates against the horns, making it nigh-impossible for them to play in tune together."
  • - "Their songs register to my ears as very safe. They never take any extreme or unpredictable turns; in fact, you could probably find the basic chord progressions of most of the songs in a second-semester theory class. I understand that a huge reason for this is to give a solid foundation on which to solo, but the solos don't sparkle or impress."
  • - "I've never heard them let their bass player get seriously ill. Given how great I think their bass player might be, this is criminal."
  • - Some of his lyrics (especially the "lift your skirt and show me your world") strike some as dumb, irksome or even sexist.
  • - Overexposure has made him so ubiquitous that he's no longer novel or fresh.
  • - He lifts the vibe from other more talented bands, and adds screechy violin as the only signifier of difference.
  • - His fast songs are ones that would sound better slow. His slow songs would sound better fast.
  • - All of his songs nowadays sound (to me, at least) to just be murkier, smudgier, less interesting retreads of "Ants Marching"; (The Same way everything by Live sounds like a murkier, smudgier, less interesting retreads of "The Beauty of Gray".)

the offical reasons for loving him as provided by the DMB fanbase:

  • - Dave r0x0r! u r all gay!
  • - U R All Gay! Dave r0x0r!
  • - If you were to actually HEAR his music you'd like it.

Note: I didn't say "Pain Lies on the Riverside"...and this is tragic. If they just stuck to making retreads of "Pain Lies on the Riverside", they'd still suck, but they'd have been 1000x better.)

Lord Custos Epsilon (Lord Custos Epsilon), Wednesday, 30 July 2003 10:51 (twenty years ago) link

Sorry. that footnote is a bit muddled.
Live making retreads of "Beauty of Gray" == tiresome crud
Live making retreads of "Pain Lies on the Riverside" == tiresome crud but still toetappingly fun in small doses.

Lord Custos Epsilon (Lord Custos Epsilon), Wednesday, 30 July 2003 10:57 (twenty years ago) link

no, not that hepburn woman! the yellow cake!
i suspect that was my bad, as the children say...

eedd, Wednesday, 30 July 2003 17:56 (twenty years ago) link

She currently is not moist and chewy. By now, she's probably a dried out peice of Zesty Formaldehyde Flavorâ„¢ Beef Jerky with a dusty dandruff-like crust on it.
(Yes, children...death is scary. So you better have fun while yer still alive.)

Lord Custos Epsilon (Lord Custos Epsilon), Wednesday, 30 July 2003 19:05 (twenty years ago) link

Oh, that silly Custos.
I can't help but notice that you omitted the few good points that a couple fans and I did actually make. Why is this?

Allison (Allison), Wednesday, 30 July 2003 19:32 (twenty years ago) link

i noticed that to. if it weren't the case i would've surely nominated him as captain of this thread, since he obviously cares for it so deeply. but we can't have a leader who's quite so biased.

Felcher (Felcher), Wednesday, 30 July 2003 19:46 (twenty years ago) link

Am I correct in assuming that you don't want to admit that some of us are actually somewhat intelligent and have musical knowlege? hmph...well, if that's the case you can just forget about that groovy hate fuck.

Allison (Allison), Wednesday, 30 July 2003 19:59 (twenty years ago) link

romance factor fading...
fading..
gone.

(if ever run into a hepburn relative i'll pose the question to them, and we'll see! moist+chewy vs. jerkyish+flakey!!!)

Oh, you still get yours, Kingfish.

Allison (Allison), Wednesday, 30 July 2003 22:39 (twenty years ago) link

I can't help but notice that you omitted the few good points that a couple fans and I did actually make. Why is this?
Well, These were the only points I remember the pro-DMB crowd making. I've read through this thread from beginning to end twice (once when the thread was 800 posts long, and again when it was 1200 posts long) and the only pro-DMB comments that stuck to my brain were that ILM was gay for not seeing how much DMB rocks...and that if we only gave it another try...

if it weren't the case i would've surely nominated him as captain of this thread...
Nominate me? For Captain? BAH! I'm already LORD of this thread, by Divine Right!

...since he obviously cares for it so deeply.
I love all threads equally, like my own children.
I still wait for the Meaning of Life to be revealed in this thread.

Lord Custos Epsilon (Lord Custos Epsilon), Thursday, 31 July 2003 11:52 (twenty years ago) link

oh, also, I was trying to keep this thread going to see if it would ever match/exceed any the Jay-Z vs Nas threads for sheer length.
I think we're 2/3rds of the way to matching The Original Jay-Z vs Nas Thread...
Unless someone wants to add their opinion to that thread...

Lord Custos Epsilon (Lord Custos Epsilon), Thursday, 31 July 2003 14:30 (twenty years ago) link

Bizarre how much cynicism is going on here. The anti-Dave trend is overkill for a band already on the decline. In case no one noticed, "Everyday" and "Busted Stuff" were commercial flops, and the band has seriously lost its relevance and most of its original fan base. However, I doubt that a thread such as this would even exist had Dave, lets say, died after "Crash" was released. Then there would be threads saying, "Man, remember the DMB? They had some pretty good stuff back in the 90's. Too bad they didnt last long enough for us to seriously lambast and discredit them once they reached critical-pop-mass."

John Baer, Thursday, 31 July 2003 14:43 (twenty years ago) link

Of course those were the only ones that stuck to your brain, Custos. Probably because it backed up your beliefs that the fans are all idiots. I guess that would make sense though, being that not much sticks to your brain to begin with.

You're kidding -- this is now the biggest ILM thread?
No. I don't know which one is the biggest evah. The number of posts is currently higher. But thats not really relevant.
This thread may have more posts, but they're short "U R All Gay" posts. The Jay-Z Thread takes 5x as long to load because each individual post is more than a paragraph long.

Kingfish (Kingfish), Friday, 1 August 2003 12:12 (twenty years ago) link

i just realized why, despite having a handful of good songs, i truly cannot stand coldplay. their singer is exactly what you would get if you mixed dave matthews with thom yorke. and coldplay's music is almost the same. as much as i like thom yorke, if he were on his own, he wouldnt be nearly as good. and if he were 50% Dave Matthews he'd be something of an utter annoyance (some will argue that he already is, but i don't think so). the physical, vocal, musical, and fanbase comparisons between Mr. Coldplay and what i would imagine a DM/TY hybrid to be are astounding. i can't believe i never noticed this before.

Felcher (Felcher), Monday, 4 August 2003 15:43 (twenty years ago) link

If so far, we have drawn out our concept of the Dave Matthews Band from the ordinary use of our practical reason, it must by no means be inferred that we have treated them as a concept of experience. On the contrary, when we pay attention to our experiences of human conduct, we meet frequent and - as we ourselves admit - justified complaints that we can adduce no certain examples of the spirit which acts out of pure duty, and that, although much may be done in accordance with the commands of duty, it remains doubtful whether a love for the Dave Matthews Band is done for the sake of duty and so has a moral value.
Hence, at all times, there have been fans who have absolutely denied this presence of this spirit and have ascribed everything to a more or les refined self-love.

Dave Matthews Band smell like poopie. I want to see them get run over by a flaming steamroller. Dave Matthews squeaky, nasal voice and the hystrionic shreiking of the fiddle player makes my dogs ears hurt. The Dave Matthews Band destroys my Faith in God, Man and music.
< GOOGLE BAIT>

There. That oughtta bring the pro-DMB crowds back.
Maybe they'll actually try to rebut the Dave Haytas Complaints with something other that "U R All Gay" type comments.*

Lord Custos Epsilon (Lord Custos Epsilon), Tuesday, 5 August 2003 16:33 (twenty years ago) link

It's you lot who replied with all the U R All Gay type comments.
Your hatred of the last great american band is blind. These guys write great songs. Theyre awesome musicians they can outplay most rock bands(yes im aware jazz guys etc are better). The fact Dave has such a rabid loyal fanbase is proof they are great to me.
Or in I Love Music terms: Dave Matthews Band Rocks!

< /GOOGLE BAIT>

But anyhow...back to the debate (even though DMB Fan 1100 will probably never ever read this.)

It's you lot who replied with all the U R All Gay type comments.
False. The ILM only starting making U R All Gay jokes after multiple accusations of being Creed/Slipknot fans. That was hurtful. It perfectly A-OK to be be Gay, but unforgivable in the eyes of God to be a fan of Creed.

Your hatred of the last great american band is blind.
Lets overlook the ambiguity of the grammar (is the last great american band blind?) and dissect the accusation:
I'd like to think that the future holds an undending plethora of Great American Bands, many of whom have not even formed yet. So they are hardly the "Last";
The consensus is that the lead singer sounds like a (muppet|donkey) and the fiddle is a shapeless din. So they are hardly "Great";
I'll skip the words American and Band...even though, for awhile, I thought they were from Canada. (I apologize to any Canadians who find this mistake on my part to be offensive. I meant no disrespect. Please don't send any Mounted Police to rough me up.)
and no, our hatred isn't blind. We had plenty of time to think it over. They are played enough on the radio for us too all have plenty of opportunities to ponder it.

These guys write great songs.
They wrote one good song: "Ants Marching". Everything after that has been smudgy copies of "Ants Marching".

They're awesome musicians...
I'll take your word for it. I've never seen them play live.
Hmmmmm. Though this might explain why the fanbase likes them so much. The Live Experience...
Okay...serious question:
Tell me. Do they sound better live than they do on the radio? And if so, is that what makes them special?

...they can outplay most rock bands (yes im aware jazz guys etc are better).
Hmmm. Interesting....

The fact Dave has such a rabid loyal fanbase is proof they are great to me.
(*Insert Boilerplate "Well, Popularity != Quality. Hitler was popular in the beginning." comment here*)

Or in I Love Music terms: Dave Matthews Band Rocks!
Actually, an ILMer would've said "Dafe Mettews == Grebt!"

...and you still haven't rebutted the specific complaints listed here; you merely barked a "Dave r0x0r!"
