Will we ever get to the Dead C thread before ilm 'dies'?

Can we still adds poll to the (long) list? If yes, I'd like to propose a france/francophone music poll.

Van Horn Street, Sunday, 12 July 2015 19:27 (eight years ago) link

Would songs from the Singles soundtrack be counted?

This is a great idea as well, a French language poll would be awesome. Also, I would fully support a Dancehall poll. I prefer genre polls to artist polls I guess.

I would definitely commit to doing a soundtracks poll, to be a little more focused is a good idea.

I'll stick francophone on the end of the list, check back in 3 years :)

Side poll for Spoon: "Aw, yeah" vs "c'mon" vs "well alright!"

hardcore dilettante, Tuesday, 14 July 2015 20:50 (eight years ago) link

Are there any Spoon side projects other than the Divine Fits?

kornrulez6969, Tuesday, 14 July 2015 20:58 (eight years ago) link

i like the idea of a non-a-sides & non-album-tracks canon, although a strict compilation of noms might get tricky as album tracks in one country might not be in another, etc.

billstevejim, Tuesday, 14 July 2015 20:59 (eight years ago) link

Rod Steel (musicfanatic), Saturday, 8 August 2015 21:15 (eight years ago) link

I need to talk to seandalai and gr80 and see what we're gonna do. It's supposed to get underway this month.

Johnny Fever, Saturday, 8 August 2015 21:24 (eight years ago) link

After some sorting of schedules and whatnot, it looks like the nominating process for this is going to get underway a week from tomorrow (Friday). Three weeks for that. Two weeks for voting. Then the rollouts will start at the beginning of October. In the meantime, you all can bicker about whether or not it should be a 2000-15 poll to celebrate ILM's 15th anniversary or just a 2010-14 poll which would be less interesting and more redundant. ;)

Johnny Fever, Friday, 21 August 2015 00:38 (eight years ago) link

2010-2014 imo, I think it'd be MORE interesting. 15 yr span is nicely symbolic and all but obv way tougher to assemble a meaningful ballot and just functionally much more unwieldy in several ways

johnny crunch, Friday, 21 August 2015 13:41 (eight years ago) link

Bump. What's the latest news with dese pollz?

kornrulez6969, Tuesday, 25 August 2015 13:21 (eight years ago) link

everybody that's up next is awol, basically

Οὖτις, Tuesday, 25 August 2015 15:35 (eight years ago) link

summer's ending, seems like a good time for Fairport?

droit au butt (Euler), Tuesday, 25 August 2015 15:38 (eight years ago) link

Let's do it. Is that solo careers too?

kornrulez6969, Tuesday, 25 August 2015 15:48 (eight years ago) link

if one of you wants to run that one it's fine with me, I'll move it up the list

Οὖτις, Tuesday, 25 August 2015 15:49 (eight years ago) link

seems so

Fairport Convention et al (R Thompson, S Denny) - Billy Dods

droit au butt (Euler), Tuesday, 25 August 2015 15:50 (eight years ago) link

yeah I can't run it right now (skool's in)

I'd be all for whoever wants to run one right now, wherever on the list, getting moved up

droit au butt (Euler), Tuesday, 25 August 2015 15:51 (eight years ago) link

Covers is my next poll, 30+ away. That'll be sometime under President Trump. I'm more than happy to move that up and do it now, or I can take over an abandoned one.

kornrulez6969, Tuesday, 25 August 2015 16:05 (eight years ago) link

take yr pick, it's a buyers' market

Οὖτις, Tuesday, 25 August 2015 16:06 (eight years ago) link

Covers sounds more fun to me than Fairport.

Johnny Fever, Tuesday, 25 August 2015 16:10 (eight years ago) link

agreed on that point

Οὖτις, Tuesday, 25 August 2015 16:20 (eight years ago) link

covers seems like a complicated nomination process which might not run well alongside the big 2000-2014 poll? but I dunno. obv maximizing fun is the point

droit au butt (Euler), Tuesday, 25 August 2015 16:21 (eight years ago) link

I'm not into the 2000-2014 poll idea but that's just me

Οὖτις, Tuesday, 25 August 2015 16:24 (eight years ago) link

I'm into whatever will generate fun and/or interesting discussion & I think a retrospective poll will do that

I mean, we can talk about pitchfork's polls, or our own. the latter seems way more fun to me

droit au butt (Euler), Tuesday, 25 August 2015 16:26 (eight years ago) link

I'll wait untill the 15 year poll is done.

Covers will be relatively simple: any version of a song that's been previously released on record. So Elvis Presely singing Lieber and Stoller's Jailhouse Rock doesn't count, but Hound Dog would because that had been previously done by Big Mama Thornton.

I'd probably eliminate jazz and classical because that would get really complex, especially since technically classical recording is a cover.

kornrulez6969, Tuesday, 25 August 2015 16:33 (eight years ago) link

also the demo version of Beethoven's 5th is unfuckwithable

Οὖτις, Tuesday, 25 August 2015 16:36 (eight years ago) link

obv maximizing fun is the point

That's the main reason I left it to debate as to whether or not we do 2010-14 or 2000-14, because if nobody wants to do a 15 year retrospective then it won't be much fun. We (me, seandalai and gr80) are cool with going either way.

Johnny Fever, Tuesday, 25 August 2015 16:57 (eight years ago) link

I'd vote for the 21st century poll instead of the last 5 years, which have kinda sucked for rockists like me

kornrulez6969, Tuesday, 25 August 2015 17:21 (eight years ago) link

15 years makes more sense to me as a sort of 'faves of the century so far' sort of deal. I think it would have more scope and possibly more variety. I reckon putting the focus on too narrow and recent a time span would mean that the poll would be dominated by stuff that people absolutely love right now that they will have forgotten in a year or two. There's always the EOY polls for that kind for thing.

ultros ultros-ghali, Tuesday, 25 August 2015 17:23 (eight years ago) link

ILM Top 100 2000-2004: ALBUMS
ILM Top 100 2000-2004: TRACKS
ILM Top 100 2005-2009: ALBUMS
ILM Top 100 2005-2009: TRACKS

I figure there's pushback on a retrospective poll since we already have an established practice of doing 5-year polls, and also because people don't want to slog through 15 years of music to put together a ballot. I'm split on it myself, even. But whichever way we end up going, it will probably look different than the results of the EOY polls.

Johnny Fever, Tuesday, 25 August 2015 17:27 (eight years ago) link

we need to poll it

my ballot
1. 2000-14
2. 2010-14
