Modern Rock #1 Hits of 2006

Our series through Billboard's #1 Modern Rock hits continues with 2006 – and we're almost to the present day. I personally had tuned out most of what was on alt-rock radio by this point.

Some notable #2 hits from 2006 that just missed the top spot include Tool's "Vicarious" and Muse's "Starlight" – my personal favorite of their big singles (even though the hook is a little too easy).

As with the past couple of years, the '90s reunion continues! I still think it's weird that Pearl Jam didn't hit #1 with some of their most memorable songs ("Jeremy," "Even Flow," "Betterman," "Elderly Woman," etc.), instead topping the chart with weird tracks like "Who You Are" and now "World Wide Suicide."

probably the best year of #1s in the past decade imo -- could vote for "Perfect Situation" or "When You Were Young" or "Hypnotize" or "Anna-Molly"

I still love that Killers tune.

I have a secret weakness for that Weezer song. The hook is so strong, it seems like one of those melodies that's been around forever.

"When You Were Young"

That Killers song is awesome. I have a huge soft spot for the MCR song. It's actually the only MCR song I know but I LOVE it.

i don't know which one is the best, but i voted for "when you were young" just because i've been listened to it a lot over the past two days or so

gonna vote "anna-molly" because it probably won't get any other votes otherwise

light grenades is seriously the best incubus album if you toss "love hurts"

ok i'm gonna vote for The Killers in hopes of helping it defeat "Welcome To The Black Parade"

since "when you were young" is prob gonna win i'm gonna vote for "black parade"

yeah "Dig" is great

Voting "Anna-Molly".

surprised by the outpouring of Incubus enthusiasm after the anemic turnout for Incubus singles poll

bronytheus (some dude), Monday, 18 June 2012 14:28 (11 months ago) Permalink

I don't know enough Incubus to vote in a singles poll, but I like "Anna-Molly" the most out of these songs.

EZ Snappin, Monday, 18 June 2012 14:30 (11 months ago) Permalink

I would have voted "Stellar." Am I closet Incubus fan and not know it???

That Final Fantasy section is pretty great.

EZ Snappin, Monday, 18 June 2012 18:09 (11 months ago) Permalink

Also great SOAD form this period: "BYOB."

LimbsKing, Monday, 18 June 2012 18:10 (11 months ago) Permalink

i've definitely said this before but aside from "hypnotize" and "byob" the choices for singles from those two records was totally bizarre, especially since like 80% of mezmerize is total hooks

Pretty good list, magnificent compared to the previous 00s lists. Voted MCR over Killers (although I'd take AFI's Decemberunderground over The Black Parade easily). I like the songs by SoaD, Foo Fighters, AFI, Raconteurs, and Pearl Jam. I have fond memories of drunkenly singing along to a lot of this shit with my roommate and neighbour in 06-07.

I never liked The Black Parade nearly as much as Three Cheers but I'm surprised that "Welcome..." wouldn't appeal at all to someone who loved the earlier album. It's not "Helena" but nothing is.

EveningStar (Sund4r), Tuesday, 19 June 2012 03:27 (11 months ago) Permalink

I never bothered to check out Mesmerize/Hypnotize, I think because I didn't find the singles as compelling as those from Toxicity. This thread is making me think I should give them a shot some time.

EveningStar (Sund4r), Tuesday, 19 June 2012 03:32 (11 months ago) Permalink

yeah they're solid records, def worth hearing for any fans of the first 2 albums. some days Mezmerize is my favorite SOAD album.

I have never heard "Tell Me Baby," "Anna-Molly," "The Animal I've Become" or even knew that a band named 10 Years existed. I feel like dancing.

da croupier, Tuesday, 19 June 2012 05:22 (11 months ago) Permalink

"DOA" "Perfect Situation" & "World Wide Suicide" would some of the better later songs by those guys, but I think I have to go with "When We Were Young"

10 Years is the first band since the early '90s I had never heard of when compiling this list.

K-Rock in New York played "Cigaro" a month or so before playing "BYOB" and I recall thinking it was the heaviest song to ever receive such frequent spins on a major commercial rock station, which might be correct.

SOAD's "Sugar" seemed pretty atonal and frenzied for alt-rock stations back in 1999 to me.

LimbsKing, Tuesday, 19 June 2012 18:36 (11 months ago) Permalink

oh yeah, i totally didn't get them at first -- my cooler-than-i-realized-at-the-time friend who also played me Aquemeni for the first time had to convince me of how great "Sugar" was

I have to admit that Gerard Way's vocals aren't really holding up as great as I might have liked.

"Sugar" is great (but is surely not atonal). Crystallizes all the things I like about them: clever range of vocal styles, stop-start rhythmic mania, weirdly hooky dissonant riff.
