Please note that between "Steam" and the Lemonheads, the grunge revolution was complete.

That's a pretty dire list, it's between Belly, Nirvana and the Lemonheads for me, leaning towards "Feed the Tree" I think.

I probably think about once a week about how incredible and perfect "Break It Down Again" is, so thanks for giving me a thread to say so so I didn't have to start one!

I love "No Rain," like "Steam," didn't like "Heart Shaped Box," and never heard any of the others. "No Rain" wins.

Wait a minute -- you've never heard "Regret"?? How is that possible?

The Magnificent Colin Firth (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Saturday, 20 March 2010 16:18 (3 years ago) Permalink

That's a pretty dire list,

Ehhh disagree. Much more interestingly eclectic stuff in this and the preceding years list than what succeeded them ("interestingly eclectic" is all some of these are, granted).

The Magnificent Colin Firth (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Saturday, 20 March 2010 16:20 (3 years ago) Permalink

I think it's because there's a bunch of ILX faves on there who hold no interest for me at that point in their career, plus stuff like the Neds and Jebus Jones who more or less represent unspeakable horror to me, plus a slightly sub-middling Gabriel track and the 3 songs I actually like.

I can only remember 4 of these (Nirvana, Blind Melon, Hatfield, Belly.)

President Keyes, Sunday, 21 March 2010 15:08 (3 years ago) Permalink

Voted RHCP. Had completely forgotten the Jesus Jones song but I still enjoy it. Like the Belly song OK. "Heart-Shaped Box" is better than most of these but it always struck me as middling Nirvana and one of the weakest tracks on In Utero. "No Rain" hasn't aged well for me. "My Sister" is ridiculous, "Into Your Arms" is cloying, "Steam" is embarrasing, and 90s semi-hits by 80s synthpop bands are not for me. ("Regret" is more than a semi-hit but I still dislike it.)

Sundar, Sunday, 21 March 2010 16:47 (3 years ago) Permalink

It's Belly for me.

As much as I love TFF I've always felt "Break It Down Again" was the single worst thing Roland ever wrote.

"Walking In My Shoes". A great song from an otherwise horribly disappointing album.

Tied Up In Geir (Geir Hongro), Sunday, 21 March 2010 17:26 (3 years ago) Permalink

There are other great ones here too though: "Steam", "Into Your Arms", "The Devil You Know".

Tied Up In Geir (Geir Hongro), Sunday, 21 March 2010 17:27 (3 years ago) Permalink

I used to own the Jesus Jones album with "The Devil You Know" (the first album recorded "entirely" on a computer, said the breathless publicity notes). It's a good hook and vocal in search of a song.

Could the video be more of its time?:

Sundar, Sunday, 21 March 2010 17:56 (3 years ago) Permalink

The third album Perverse properly lays claim to being the first rock album recorded entirely digitally. [1] As a result, the jacket sleeve does not list the traditional guitars/ drums/ vocals credit; it instead lists a frequency range: 20 Hz to 4 kHz- Al Jaworski, 300 Hz to 8 kHz- Jerry De Borg, drum type sounds- Gen, etc.

They really did this? (And, what, did De Borg not use pitches in the range of the two lowest strings on the guitar?:P)

honorable mentions to Belly & Nirvana, but there's no fucking way this is anything other than Regret. that Ned's joint is one of their better singles too. I'm dumbfounded that it went to #1 on any list, tho, & I've never even heard of that JJ song (which is saying a lot, considering how much attention I was paying to "modern rock" outlets at the time).

I voted for "Regret" too. The rest:

Nirvana
Belly
"Walking In My Shoes"

Surprised Creep didn't make it to #1.

''Regret'' for the Baywatch video, no other reason.

I'm not going to vote for it, but I would be perfectly happy is "Soul to Squeeze" was the sole remnant of the RHCP legacy.

Almost voted Belly but damn if "Regret" hasn't aged a whole lot better than I thought it would, having heard it back then and having said "ehhhhh".

Sean Carruthers, Thursday, 25 March 2010 02:22 (3 years ago) Permalink

"I Feel You." (Which may well be the hardest rocking song here, too, despite being Depeche Mode.)

xhuxk, Thursday, 25 March 2010 02:26 (3 years ago) Permalink

You skipped "Pets"! #1 for 5 weeks that summer.

For me, "Regret" by some margin, though "Soul to Squeeze" comes unbeckoned to my mind's ear a lot (I listened to alt radio a lot that summer, and lol Coneheads soundtrack). Plus I do a pretty decent Kiedis croon (big achievement, that). I don't remember the Jesus Jones song, or the NADs, but o/w this is a pretty pleasant list of songs, even if "Regret" is the only one I love.

YEah, I like Depeche Mode and Nirvana more than New Order, but "I Feel You" is a dirge and "Walking In My Shoes" is only slightly better. "Heart Shaped Box" is not a fave either.

two-horse race between depeche mode and nirvana. not a huge fan of either of those bands, but I am fond of those particular tunes.

my wife will be aggrieved that I'm not voting for neds.

"Feed the Tree" for me. And that Juliana Hatfield Three track is inextricably linked in my mind with sharing a sleeping bag with then current gf at some festival, possibly Glasto, and really wishing I was somewhere else.
