I really do love a lot of what they've both done, but I these days I probably like Drexciya more than either of them

tanuki, Monday, 9 April 2012 18:04 (twelve years ago) link

not really a fan of this poll, both groups are two sides of the same coin imo

i would've predicted the FINAL BATTLE to be Daft Punk vs Basic Channel, which would've been a far weirder comparison for a poll

I don't see how these two are "two sides of the same coin"? To me they don't sound the same at all.

For me, this is a choice between the funnest electronic act of the 90s, versus one of the most boring ones, so it's not a hard choice.

Should have added the 2nd and maybe even 3rd place winners to the poll, peeps who voted for the lower ranks could change the final results drastically. Maybe Daft Punk could win by gathering the votes from chemical bros and basement jaxx sympatyhizers per example.

Autechre
Mouse on Mars
Daft Punk
LFO
Boards of Canada
The Orb

The way it is now Autechre will win by double.

I don't get how Mouse on Mars was "electronic music for (90s) indie kids". They don't sound like anything like indie rock, and their first album was trance, for chrissakes! If you mean that indie kids listened to their albums, what does that have to do with how good/bad their music was? Also, how is Autechre different in that regard? Warp Records and IDM in general were big among 90s indie kids too.

Tuomas, Tuesday, 10 April 2012 06:28 (twelve years ago) link

To add to that: maybe Idiology sounds a bit like indie rock, but that was in the 00s.

Tuomas, Tuesday, 10 April 2012 06:30 (twelve years ago) link

Really like Iaora Tahiti and Autoditacker, plus some of the earlier singles (Bib and Frosch). Can't be arsed with Autechre.

the late great, Tuesday, 10 April 2012 08:38 (twelve years ago) link

Love both of these, but voted for the cold steel of Autechre over the softer charms of MoM.

French Cricket in the USA (NickB), Tuesday, 10 April 2012 08:47 (twelve years ago) link

I've never liked a single things by Mouse on Mars. I listened to Iahora Tahiti like 1.5 times before selling it. Autechre on the other hand, I voted for in the other thread, so...

EDB, Tuesday, 10 April 2012 10:04 (twelve years ago) link

Iaora Tahiti is their worst 90s album, IMO: kinda too simplistic and bleepy, but it doesn't have the trance pleasures of its predecessor either. With Autoditacker they managed to refine that new sound into something more detailed and idiosyncratic. So I wouldn't give up on them based on IT alone.

Tuomas, Tuesday, 10 April 2012 11:23 (twelve years ago) link

Warp Records and IDM in general were big among 90s indie kids too.

the late great, Tuesday, 10 April 2012 20:05 (twelve years ago) link

I agree that MoM took a deep dive downwards in the turn of the decade, but the stuff between Vulvaland and Glam is unfuckable-with (and Niun Niggung has its moments too).

(xx-post)

Tuomas, Tuesday, 10 April 2012 20:12 (twelve years ago) link

i kinda tune out after autoditacker but i agree, the first couple albums are pretty great in their own way

it's just too ... slight (?) for my liking, kinda like audio wallpaper or a poor man's atom heart

the late great, Tuesday, 10 April 2012 20:14 (twelve years ago) link

Haha, that's funny, because "audio wallpaper" is how I'd describe Autechre. After the initial, more technoish tunes (which I actually like), they just went overtly abstract, like some pointless geometric patterns on a wall. I can admire how their tunes are constructed, but because they seems to about the construction itself and nothing more, they don't move me in any way, but their music is still too busy to form the sort of directionless ambience one can immerse in, so it just feels pointless. Whereas MoM, even though they're always busy too, at least have some kind of a point, some emotional drive to all the vectors in their tunes.

Tuomas, Tuesday, 10 April 2012 20:28 (twelve years ago) link

later Autechre is best appreciated on headphones out in the open air i think. the austerity and the abstraction aren't the point, for me, but they help to create this thick textural sound wherein lies the pleasure. i listen to it more like i'd listen to noise stuff or Nurse With Wound or other sound collagists - and great moments emerge from within the initial rush of sound, but i guess it isn't really about the journey from A to B for me

red is hungry green is jawless (Noodle Vague), Tuesday, 10 April 2012 20:33 (twelve years ago) link

I have always found Mouse on Mars to be really, really boring

God, Music and Romeo and Juliet (DJP), Tuesday, 10 April 2012 20:34 (twelve years ago) link

it would be like some kind of op-art wallpaper that would fuck with your brain and make it hard to think though, i find it hard to focus on latter-day autechre (post ganz graf) but also impossible to ignore (in a bad way, all that excessive MSP fuckery and grating noises drives me up the wall, it's like an endless feedback squeal)

the late great, Tuesday, 10 April 2012 20:34 (twelve years ago) link

that's why it reminds me of Merzbow i suppose

red is hungry green is jawless (Noodle Vague), Tuesday, 10 April 2012 20:34 (twelve years ago) link

(I will say though that I hadn't realized Panacea sampled MoM's "Elli Im Wunderland" on his bad-ass "Untitled B Side"; that is the first thing about them I've found interesting)
