yay or nay?
Who will participate?

pfunkboy (Herman G. Neuname), Wednesday, 8 December 2010 13:25 (thirteen years ago) link

I've only heard four or five metal albums from this year so couldn't really participate, but would definitely like to see the results of such a poll.

A brownish area with points (chap), Wednesday, 8 December 2010 13:29 (thirteen years ago) link

Don't think I dug on anything even remotely metallic this year. :/

Lightning Is For Babies (Johnny Fever), Wednesday, 8 December 2010 13:32 (thirteen years ago) link

uhoh.
We need voters. No point in running one that has hardly any voters. In the alltime poll hardly any of the metal thread regulars voted it was mainly lurkers/general ilxors. And we saw the complaints about the results due to that.

pfunkboy (Herman G. Neuname), Wednesday, 8 December 2010 13:36 (thirteen years ago) link

I'll vote \m/

Neil S, Wednesday, 8 December 2010 13:39 (thirteen years ago) link

Will no doubt have to listen to a load of stuff, but that's cool!

Neil S, Wednesday, 8 December 2010 13:39 (thirteen years ago) link

I could chip in if one went ahead - have prob heard more metal albums this year than any previous, albeit with a lot of big releases missing - although not really one to invest a lot in polls beyond maybe voting in them

Princess BigSam (DJ Mencap), Wednesday, 8 December 2010 13:41 (thirteen years ago) link

Actually I could brush up on what's been going on this year via the noms/youtube threads. Could be fun.

A brownish area with points (chap), Wednesday, 8 December 2010 13:44 (thirteen years ago) link

I've always been not into the whole end of year thing. Also haven't heard many new metal releases this year. So I guess I'll give a qualified "no," because really I can just not read it if it happens.

Lightning Is For Babies (Johnny Fever), Wednesday, 8 December 2010 14:19 (thirteen years ago) link

i do enjoy reading the results but prob would not vote

call all destroyer, Wednesday, 8 December 2010 14:20 (thirteen years ago) link

we need voters to make this happen though.

pfunkboy (Herman G. Neuname), Wednesday, 8 December 2010 14:31 (thirteen years ago) link

i know!

call all destroyer, Wednesday, 8 December 2010 14:36 (thirteen years ago) link

i don't post much but i've voted the last couple of years. it's a good list to read. i understand if it's too much work for not enough input, but i'd miss it.

mte, Wednesday, 8 December 2010 14:39 (thirteen years ago) link

yeah i know, but we need more people than this to make it work. Lets see how the thread unfolds today. But I cant see the likes of smithy, roxy, ned or skot voting though when they never did before. djmartian has disappeared and chuck didn't even vote in the alltime poll.

pfunkboy (Herman G. Neuname), Wednesday, 8 December 2010 14:57 (thirteen years ago) link

i'll vote, i've listened to a lot of metal this year!

i genuinely thought when i first joined that he was the admin (ilxor), Wednesday, 8 December 2010 14:57 (thirteen years ago) link

smithy's on hiatus, ned and skot never vote anyway, dunno bout roxy?

i genuinely thought when i first joined that he was the admin (ilxor), Wednesday, 8 December 2010 14:58 (thirteen years ago) link

its quite simple ilxor, we need a lot more than this to vote, but most of the regs wont. So i guess you need to drum up support on the metal thread to get voters.

pfunkboy (Herman G. Neuname), Wednesday, 8 December 2010 15:03 (thirteen years ago) link

to be fair, a lot of ppl who will vote haven't seen this thread -- you posted it an hour ago

scott seward, Wednesday, 8 December 2010 15:51 (thirteen years ago) link

i had to put that list SOMEWHERE. great tunes on there.

scott seward, Wednesday, 8 December 2010 15:51 (thirteen years ago) link

would you vote, skot?

pfunkboy (Herman G. Neuname), Wednesday, 8 December 2010 15:54 (thirteen years ago) link

I'll vote like I usually do in these end-of-year tallies.

And I won't complain like I did in the all-time poll. I still wish the point system wasn't changed on that; six people not liking something enough to put it anywhere but the bottom should not equal someone's #1 vote. 50 people? Sure.

EZ Snappin, Wednesday, 8 December 2010 15:59 (thirteen years ago) link

i would herman but i have removed polls from my ilx so i wouldn't know what happened!

scott seward, Wednesday, 8 December 2010 16:04 (thirteen years ago) link

I'll vote.

original bgm, Wednesday, 8 December 2010 16:06 (thirteen years ago) link

i mean the 2010 EOY email poll. Which will show up on your page, scott.

pfunkboy (Herman G. Neuname), Wednesday, 8 December 2010 16:09 (thirteen years ago) link

Glenn says he will help out with needle like with other polls, I still need to find out of john & henry are available, but we need to know if there's enough interest. Anyone can catch up between now and january with listening.

pfunkboy (Herman G. Neuname), Wednesday, 8 December 2010 16:15 (thirteen years ago) link

Yeah, I'll vote like I have in other years.

progspeed you! black metallers (aldo), Wednesday, 8 December 2010 16:47 (thirteen years ago) link

Yay.

Fastnbulbous, Wednesday, 8 December 2010 16:48 (thirteen years ago) link

I can drum up a death metal ballot for aerosmith's votes and a shoegaze-metal ballot for Ned's -- not sure how to vote on scott's behalf, he's not as easy to RONG-ly pigeonhole

i genuinely thought when i first joined that he was the admin (ilxor), Wednesday, 8 December 2010 16:49 (thirteen years ago) link

For scott, vote for the Lustre record.

EZ Snappin, Wednesday, 8 December 2010 17:17 (thirteen years ago) link

The minimum would still be 15 albums. The whole point is to give recognition to smaller albums in the top 100 that get ignored usually. The smaller the ballot the more likely it is to get the boring big names that end up looking like every other list. Will consult glenn to decide on weighting BUT only if it happens. At the moment it wont as there's not enough interest. So get listening to albums and drum up support for a poll.

Might do a tracks poll too if there's interest. I know ILM loves that and most metal lists dont bother.

pfunkboy (Herman G. Neuname), Wednesday, 8 December 2010 17:30 (thirteen years ago) link

How many voted last year?

And, personally, I have no use for a tracks poll.

EZ Snappin, Wednesday, 8 December 2010 17:34 (thirteen years ago) link

i think the minimum should be 10

i genuinely thought when i first joined that he was the admin (ilxor), Wednesday, 8 December 2010 17:35 (thirteen years ago) link

yeah a metal tracks poll = zzzzzzz

i genuinely thought when i first joined that he was the admin (ilxor), Wednesday, 8 December 2010 17:35 (thirteen years ago) link

I will vote and promise not to bitch about it when Sunn o))))))))) inevitably wins.

Moving Pixels (J3ff T.), Wednesday, 8 December 2010 17:51 (thirteen years ago) link

50 + this year just seems to have little interest. more "ive not listened to enough metal this year" rather than poll fatigue i think. But the thread only started this afternoon, lets see if others declare their support.

really? no support for trax?
15 min, ilxor. Non-negotiable.

pfunkboy (Herman G. Neuname), Wednesday, 8 December 2010 17:52 (thirteen years ago) link

What's the big deal if it's lurkers? You got a lot of people voting last year. I think it's worth doing. And a lot of us don't vote in the big polls because they're too broad.

Moving Pixels (J3ff T.), Wednesday, 8 December 2010 17:55 (thirteen years ago) link

I'm game, I'll vote - I think the Dawnbringer record is gonna be pretty high up for me ... Death Angel and Nachtmystium too

BlackIronPrison, Wednesday, 8 December 2010 17:55 (thirteen years ago) link

Only reason so many voted was because I had to keep the thread bumped and people (like you) still complained i was hassling folk to vote. I can do without that kinda hassle myself. The alltime poll was no fun to do in the end. A couple of lurkers who voted in that poll emailed me saying they wouldn't vote again because of the shit in that thread. I'm not blaming any single person for that btw.

I just need to know if it's worth running the poll. Ideally I'd like more input from the rolling metal thread regulars, obviously non-regulars and lurkers are more than welcome to vote. My polls are always open-house.

pfunkboy (Herman G. Neuname), Wednesday, 8 December 2010 18:00 (thirteen years ago) link

actually jeff, you always hated these polls and reluctantly voted you said.

pfunkboy (Herman G. Neuname), Wednesday, 8 December 2010 18:06 (thirteen years ago) link

Look, there's a difference between periodically reminding people to vote and hassling. You were doing the latter. As you've seen, people here seem happy to vote. Give it a shot without the constant bugging. See how it works.

Moving Pixels (J3ff T.), Wednesday, 8 December 2010 18:06 (thirteen years ago) link

xp I'm in a better mood this year.

Moving Pixels (J3ff T.), Wednesday, 8 December 2010 18:06 (thirteen years ago) link

there will be a lot more "that shouldnt be in this poll" moans if we do that. And you all know some arseholes will vote for something stupid just to be "funny".
There is never a limit to the # of nominations. That way everything gets nominated and stupid shit gets vetoed. So if there's a poll there will be a noms list (plus it means ppl get to check out albums before voting in jan)
Jeff you are the WORST at complaining that albums shouldn't be allowed.

pfunkboy (Herman G. Neuname), Wednesday, 8 December 2010 19:08 (thirteen years ago) link

Kanye for the win!

hipity-hopity muzik ftw! (Ioannis), Wednesday, 8 December 2010 19:10 (thirteen years ago) link

problem is, people will then vote for stuff that just does not fit the parameters and people will moan like fuck

who cares? most stuff won't place unless it gathers a certain # of votes/points anyway

And you all know some arseholes will vote for something stupid just to be "funny".

WHO CARES

i genuinely thought when i first joined that he was the admin (ilxor), Wednesday, 8 December 2010 19:16 (thirteen years ago) link

no

pfunkboy (Herman G. Neuname), Wednesday, 8 December 2010 19:18 (thirteen years ago) link

if you want people to vote then you should run the poll according to what will encourage ppl to vote! if i ran it myself, i'd make a 2010 metal albums list, but allow albums not "nominated"/listed to be voted for as well

seriously doubt anything not on the main reference list will make the top 30 or so

i genuinely thought when i first joined that he was the admin (ilxor), Wednesday, 8 December 2010 19:38 (thirteen years ago) link

if anything not nominated breaks the top 30 i'll puree my hat and shoes in a blender and wash them down w/ pigs blood

anyway not much pro-poll stuff here.

pfunkboy (Herman G. Neuname), Wednesday, 8 December 2010 20:30 (thirteen years ago) link

like i said -- make voting easy and the voters will come

i genuinely thought when i first joined that he was the admin (ilxor), Wednesday, 8 December 2010 20:34 (thirteen years ago) link

i think you will find its much easier to have a list to choose from.

pfunkboy (Herman G. Neuname), Wednesday, 8 December 2010 20:35 (thirteen years ago) link

and there will be too many stupid votes. so no.

pfunkboy (Herman G. Neuname), Wednesday, 8 December 2010 20:36 (thirteen years ago) link

results still won't turn out any stupider than any of the year-end lists here:

2010 Magazine's Albums Of The Year Thread For Posting Lists and Discussion

i genuinely thought when i first joined that he was the admin (ilxor), Wednesday, 8 December 2010 20:38 (thirteen years ago) link

if people want to vote they will, the problem is the metal guys and gals dont want to vote. or are against polls entirely.

pfunkboy (Herman G. Neuname), Wednesday, 8 December 2010 20:38 (thirteen years ago) link

on ilx we do a nominations thread.

pfunkboy (Herman G. Neuname), Wednesday, 8 December 2010 20:38 (thirteen years ago) link

I would vote in this.

sofatruck, Wednesday, 8 December 2010 20:39 (thirteen years ago) link

anyway -- people who want to choose from a comprehensive nominations list can do so. anyone who wants to add something extra (stupid or not) can do so. you can even throw out obvious lol-votes like kanye or whatever.

i genuinely thought when i first joined that he was the admin (ilxor), Wednesday, 8 December 2010 20:39 (thirteen years ago) link

then they complain that i left out votes, not to mention it fucks up the vote count speadsheets meaning extra work, NO.

pfunkboy (Herman G. Neuname), Wednesday, 8 December 2010 20:40 (thirteen years ago) link

If someone says an album has been left out after noms close, they can simply mention it on the thread and ask if they can vote for it. if it meets the criteria then fine.
BUT WE DONT HAVE ENOUGH POTENTIAL VOTERS YET, so its all irrelevant.

pfunkboy (Herman G. Neuname), Wednesday, 8 December 2010 20:41 (thirteen years ago) link

Is the issue really that you don't want to do it because of the clusterfuck of the all-time poll? It's okay to say that instead of saying there's no interest because the same people who never vote aren't going to vote in it. Sounds to me like the usual suspects are all interested.

EZ Snappin, Wednesday, 8 December 2010 20:41 (thirteen years ago) link

Aye, and it's not like about a dozen people on the thread haven't said they're taking part already FFS.

If anything, the obsession shown with four named posters and their contributions makes me feel like it's some special club I can never be part of because I don't post enough so maybe I shouldn't bother.

They don't want to vote, for whatever reason. The rest of us do, and what's more we get something out of the results. There were maybe 10 records in last year's list that I'd either missed or misjudged that the poll made me reevaluate. How is that a bad thing?

progspeed you! black metallers (aldo), Wednesday, 8 December 2010 20:42 (thirteen years ago) link

people will vote, just run the poll. also, try not to come across like such a nominations nazi, people will like you better and not give you as much shit in the results thread, i'm guessing?

<3,
ilxor

i genuinely thought when i first joined that he was the admin (ilxor), Wednesday, 8 December 2010 20:42 (thirteen years ago) link

also do we make it a heavy rock/metal poll to stop people complaining that there's non metal stuff in it? Because lots of stuff in it every year are obviously not actually 'metal'. Like when marnie stern made it and everyone complained.

pfunkboy (Herman G. Neuname), Wednesday, 8 December 2010 20:45 (thirteen years ago) link

Yeah, run a noms list for a couple of weeks before opening voting just to remind people. It's actually been a pretty long year for potential high placers - didn't Cathedral come out in January or something?

progspeed you! black metallers (aldo), Wednesday, 8 December 2010 20:54 (thirteen years ago) link

no we have a noms list, if anything is missed out you can ask on the voting thread if you can include it, if its within poll parameters and noone vetoes it then it will be a yes.
