tough....for me it's between Tri Repetae and I care because you do. SAW II would be an obvious one but I don't honestly listen to it that much.

LOL all these albums suck

moonship journey to baja, Friday, 4 May 2007 19:21 (ten years ago) Permalink

i went for "frequencies" - it was between that and "spanners".

lfam, are you serious?

cutty, Friday, 4 May 2007 19:34 (ten years ago) Permalink

my post got lost.

Artificial Intelligence totally changed my life when it came out so it gets my vote.

After that, Warp Influences, Bytes and b12.

dan selzer, Friday, 4 May 2007 19:39 (ten years ago) Permalink

I voted for Boards of Canada - Geogaddi, but I don't really have strong feelings about anything in their catalog, it's just my favorite at the moment.

Whatever happened to Plone?

ciderpress, Friday, 4 May 2007 19:39 (ten years ago) Permalink

i voted for 'stay down' by 2LS but it was a tough pick.

félix pié, Friday, 4 May 2007 19:46 (ten years ago) Permalink

one of the guys died of cancer then warp dropped them. the other guy played keyboards in broadcast for a bit and now does other shit.

Blech is SO GOOD - the Seefeel/LFO segue esp. - seems silly to vote for this in what is supposed to be an album poll tho

blunt, Friday, 4 May 2007 20:02 (ten years ago) Permalink

well, there are a lot of pretty good albums on there, but only a few that i love, like some of the aphex stuff and a drexciya single that's not listed. and i should disclose that i've only heard about 50% of it. so it's not total suck but when i was getting into electronic music in high school its reputation and its catalogue were miles of quality apart, and the past seven years haven't been its best.

90s choice = haunted dancehall
00s choice = uh...future crayon!

blueski, Friday, 4 May 2007 20:06 (ten years ago) Permalink

jim, Friday, 4 May 2007 20:09 (ten years ago) Permalink

i wonder if Warp gets judged as a 'dance' label too much but i think they've always been in a unique position as a predominantly electronic/techno-based label with this many albums - there's no real competition in this respect even if Warp's quality/quantity ratio is only something like 30/70 (still better than most labels this size/this old or bigger/older).

in general I'd say Warp's hit-to-miss ratio is much higher than the 30/70 split...I'm not familiar with every one of their artists, but Gravenhurst strike me as the only duffers in the bunch...

i was wondering if anyone was going to rep for coco steel.

the first chris clark album is really underrated i think. at least no one ever talks about it. it's very neo aphex twin from a few years earlier, but it's easily just as good just not in the muso way.

A lot of great stuff but Intervision is one of my top 5 favourite records ever.

I think I'm going to vote for Tri Repetae, but I really mean Tri Repetae++.
Actually, I think I'll go for Clark's Body Riddle, which needs more love than it gets.

LFO Advance for me. Was a tough one but that's what I went for in the end. I still remember the excitement when that album came out. Good memories.

Brigadier Lethbridge-Pfunkboy, Friday, 4 May 2007 22:44 (ten years ago) Permalink

a couple of tracks on that are up there with the best electronic tracks ever ("tied up"!!) but some of them are sort of snoozy ... same feelings about "sheath" and "frequencies", honestly.

moonship journey to baja, Friday, 4 May 2007 22:55 (ten years ago) Permalink

i voted for lp5

tricky, Friday, 4 May 2007 23:19 (ten years ago) Permalink

The first Nightmare on Wax is a terrific album, so warm, original and funky and with none of the lazy soul stoner affectations of the later stuff. I have a lot of the other albums from the early years, and they're patchy. Even in those days, Warp was overrated. They rejected Aphex's early material and only signed him later when R&S had put out SAW. LFO put out some great vinyl then seemed to lose it on the first album. Fuse only had one or two tracks, the rest of that record is pretty corny. Honourable mention to Sweet Exorcist, for their early bizarre and creative direction.

essentials:

boards - music has the right
autechre - lp5
aphex twin - come to daddy ep
plaid - restproof clockwork
sabres - haunted dancehall
two lone swordsmen - tiny reminders

i think those are the very best.

I was the vote for Prefuse's first album - I think I just heard it at the right time with the right people, and consequently for weeks the whole house was walking around going "I'm about to ex......it" and "Fuck words of wisdom/I/foo/I fuck/dick/ge-ih-uh-I-do-I-lo-i-li-I-fuck/dick"

Hurting 2, Saturday, 26 May 2007 04:21 (ten years ago) Permalink

I've never understood just why SAW II is so beloved. I mean, CD1 track 1 and 3, for instance, I wouldn't hesitate to call some of the finest pieces of music I've ever heard. But even so, the vast majority is just way too dark for me, which still is fine, but for 2 and a half hours or so. . .

Not one vote for Electro-Soma though. . . hmmmmmmn. "Hall of Mirrors" alone puts it among my top choices; similarly so with Bytes and The Clan - "Mongol Hordes".

I like the "Butterfly Prowler" track on the new Clark album. His tracks can get a bit cluttered/muddled.. there's a lot going on in some of them, but it can be sort of impenetrable or too compressed-sounding.

braunld (Lowell N. Behold'n), Friday, 14 April 2017 19:33 (one month ago) Permalink

That's a good description of his tracks ^ Some of them really hit the sweet spot for me, the closest he's come to a fully realized success is "Clark" I think.

Carlotta's Portrait (Ross), Friday, 14 April 2017 19:50 (one month ago) Permalink

The s/t is pretty solid throughout, been meaning to purchase it but something else always comes up. I read an interview where he talks about the book Annihilation by Jeff VanderMeer, and how the album (s/t) is sort of based on/related to it.. anyway, made me pick up the book and it was good, easy/engaging sci fi. Haven't yet delved further into the trilogy, though.

braunld (Lowell N. Behold'n), Friday, 14 April 2017 20:15 (one month ago) Permalink

Oh nice, i'll have to check that book out. Reading the article that explains his recording process was really interesting. His enthusiasm for explaining the visceral sounds he achieves is v cool. Not sure it always translates to the most enjoyable experience but ymmv

DL - Have you heard the second Plone album, it's a really evolved sound, almost reminds me more of pre-Mum at times.

Heard new Clark album this weekend and "Butterfly Prowler" and "Peak Magnetic" are the stand out tracks. His formula seems a bit predictable in that he has way too many ideas lobbed on top of some tracks that are also trying to make you move. Doesn't quite work for me.
