two songs i've heard— the one w/ lil wayne and "when they remember" (i think that's what it's called)— are awesome.
― J0rdan S., Sunday, 18 November 2007 20:40 (sixteen years ago) link
the beat on "when they remember" is one of my fav beats of the year.
he kills 'nuttin on me'
great album
― deej, Tuesday, 20 November 2007 07:35 (sixteen years ago) link
no homo @ "nuttin' on me"
the beats on this album that sound like they cost $$$$$ were def worth it.
― J0rdan S., Tuesday, 20 November 2007 07:37 (sixteen years ago) link
everything ive read about this maligns the 50 song. is that just typical 07 reactionary 50 hate? i like that song a lot. i don't think free can't do "pop rap" and/or sex rap which is what ppl are saying about the 50 song.
― J0rdan S., Tuesday, 20 November 2007 07:39 (sixteen years ago) link
album should probably have it's own thread btw.

it does! this thread was started 2 and a half years ago when people originally thought Free's second album was going to be released.
I'm pretty hyped about this, probably more than the Beanie album, gonna pick it up after work today.

i like how for all his saltyness about no kanye/blaze this time bink's ended up lacing him with pastiches easily better than he'd have got if he had had em ('still got love', yum)(perhaps pastiche is not the right word)
the 50 track is A+ but there is something about the way free scooby-doos in with "take it to the toooop?" that makes me lol hard
and i was right the first time about 'big spender'! why front!
― r|t|c, Tuesday, 20 November 2007 14:42 (sixteen years ago) link
really disgree about busta tho, i just don't wanna hear the guy right now whatever he's spitting
― r|t|c, Tuesday, 20 November 2007 14:46 (sixteen years ago) link
let's not say Bink's style is a pastiche of Kanye/Blaze, he was there originating/popularizing that sound along with them on Dynasty and The Blueprint, he just always got less credit for some reason.
but yeah "Big Spender" (er "Roc-A-Fella Billionaires" or whatever) really grew on me over time, they should've shot a video for that one.
― Alex in Baltimore, Tuesday, 20 November 2007 14:48 (sixteen years ago) link
plus Bink did the hardest non-single on Philadelphia Freeway, "All My Life" w/ Nate Dogg!!

Aye.
― The Reverend, Tuesday, 20 November 2007 15:13 (sixteen years ago) link
I'm liking this a lot too. Particularly the second half. "It's Over" is great, "Spit that shit" "Free at Last," "Nuttin on me" and "Lights get low" are all early favorites.
― paulhw, Tuesday, 20 November 2007 15:21 (sixteen years ago) link
so sad how shook the marketing is for things these days - like, ok if people were a bit tentative with 'big spender' at first, but that's the moment you force the fucking thing through! people want to be TOOOLD. if the 'roc boys' video was for this and not jigga's selfabsorbed shit then it'd have been the biggest thing all year probly
― r|t|c, Tuesday, 20 November 2007 15:56 (sixteen years ago) link
fuck philadelphia freeway is my shit and was my shit for a fucking long time in the same way i played played played illmatic, i am, ready to die, blueprint, a classic on the same level as those to me, shit i played while doing a bunch of dumb shit for the last five years. but i can't even tell you shit about jay or nas these days. last jay i heard was some video i saw where he's in morocco with a pagani zonda and that girl that drives nascar. and i love nas more than my dad but you know. freeway though. this is like born again biggie duets long lost radio freestyle with 50 hooks for me, biggie alive and well and living in philadelphia jumpng out of the cadillac srx to cop fitteds for his video. i'm goin to the mall later to see if i can get this.

Okay, dude. It's not that good.
― The Reverend, Tuesday, 20 November 2007 19:24 (sixteen years ago) link
first, why you cut i am from my classic albums list??
i was just saying i played phila freeway a lot and was into it as much as i was into anything else i was really into. but if i ran a rap magazine or something i'd start getting it on top 10 lists and retroactively give it 5 mics like the chronic.
― dylannn, Wednesday, 21 November 2007 03:33 (sixteen years ago) link
this record is hella consistent. no complaints ... i cant really picture a 'better' freeway album.
― deej, Wednesday, 21 November 2007 03:53 (sixteen years ago) link
wow this is really good
about the only track I'm not that into is When They Remember, the beat seems kinda busy / histrionic with the vocal sample being so constant

best rap album of the year
I haven't really heard enough rap records for that to mean much coming from me this year but I do think I like it a little better than the UGK
― dmr, Saturday, 24 November 2007 20:46 (sixteen years ago) link
its better than UGK. too many guests on there and way too long.

rong 2
― deej, Sunday, 25 November 2007 00:22 (sixteen years ago) link
this is getting sorta overrated if folks seriously think its better than the ugk. very 2003 sounding and it never really transcends. Its just very very consistent and strong. victory for the 'art of the album' i guess, but no where near as ambitious or accomplished as the UGK
― deej, Sunday, 25 November 2007 00:24 (sixteen years ago) link
I still haven't heard this, but deej where you characterize the UGK as "ambitious or accomplished" I might say "overlong and samey." And I like it!
― BIG HOOS aka the steendriver, Sunday, 25 November 2007 06:08 (sixteen years ago) link
what the fuck does 'overlong' mean
― deej, Sunday, 25 November 2007 09:22 (sixteen years ago) link
unless you give a shit about 'art of the album' where 'art of the album' = 40 minutes of consistency = zzz
100 minutes of consistency = ???
― The Reverend, Sunday, 25 November 2007 09:24 (sixteen years ago) link
I heard both the UGK and the Freeway albums for the first time last week - both are fantastic. I'm not sure which i like more though.
― Tim F, Sunday, 25 November 2007 09:37 (sixteen years ago) link
i give a shit about art of the album. i dont really get whats ambitious or accomplished about the UGK album, except the length of it. and the production on the ugk album isnt as consistent as it is on the freeway album. i dunno if its my speakers but some of the beats on the ugk album seem a bit thin sounding like a lot of modern production, not as thick as older ugk beats.

the track with jay-z on this sounds about 8 years old! reminds me of hard knock life-era rocafella (are people are probably going to get all backinthedays misty-eyed for that era now?). this falters a bit in the middle or 3/4 of the way through - nothing bad or embarassing, just not as powerful as the first 4-5 songs, but still good. i think i like this more than graduation. this is the album freeway should have had for his debut.
― titchyschneiderMk2, Monday, 26 November 2007 09:59 (sixteen years ago) link
i've been fgeeling this even more than philadelphia freeway. man, the raps is just so HARD on everything. there isn't any time where free doesn't rap his fuckin ass on any track. man free just gives me those perfect moment tingles on this like nobody else does but nas and face and mega and 50.
FREEWAY GOT CONNECTS WITH THE BOSSES I GET A CALL FROM THE DEALER YOU CONNECT WITH THE AUCTION IM STILL PREPARED FOR YOUR SQUADRON I TEAR UP MY TARGET VEST COVER MY ORGANS CALICO WITH THE CARTRIDGE over crazy fuckin squealing u don't know beat "NO NO NO NO NO" and then a face verse?

― M@tt He1ges0n, Monday, 14 January 2008 19:17 (sixteen years ago) link
i listen to that 9, 10 combo over and over again
free at last is FIERCE, second verse flow is just FIERCE. that's what i love about free. wish i could explain what i love so much about just everything in the way he raps. listen to that second verse, the one that starts, GATS HOLLOW THEM LOJACK EM AND FOLLOW THEM
like listening to some dudes, listening to other rappers that i love. some dude like face or fat pat with careless slowly spreading thick blades of voice on the beat. or nas with immaculate construction and raps that you can imagine written down and read and re-read, pencil scratches and shit crossed out in the flow. lots of people borrow that shit and they borrowed shit from other people but nobody could be FIERCE like free. even shit like pharaoh doubletime angry oldschool houston shit--not that free is really fast or anything but that's as close as comes to my head right now, some midwest or houston fierce fast shit-- has a little gloss to it just because you can feel a fanciness, a showiness. nobody could rap like free.
