RAY DAVIES SHOT IN NEW ORLEANS

RAY DAVIES of THE KINKS is recovering in hospital after being shot in the leg in NEW ORLEANS.

The veteran musician was on holiday when the incident happened. BBC news reports that the incident happened yesterday (January 4) after a female companion allegedly had her purse stolen at gunpoint.

Davies was taken to the nearby Medical Center Of Louisiana for treatment for the injury, which isn’t thought to be life threatening.

Local police have arrested one person in relation to the incident, with a second suspect is still at large.

Davies was recently awarded the CBE in the New Year's Honours list.

Ray Davies formed The Kinks with his brother Dave. The band has had a huge influence on everyone from Paul Weller to Blur with their unsurpassed blending of observation and Englishness that peaked with 'Waterloo Sunset'.

They are even credited with the invention of heavy metal with the heavy riffing of 'All Day And All Of The Night' and 'You Really Got Me'.

Kinks singer Ray Davies wounded

Davies was given a CBE in the New Year's Honours list
The Kinks singer Ray Davies is recovering after being shot in the thigh while on holiday in New Orleans.
The singer-songwriter, 59, was wounded on Sunday after trying to run after two men who allegedly stole his female companion's purse at gunpoint.

He was admitted to the Medical Center of Louisiana but his injuries were not considered serious.

A New Orleans police spokesman said one person had been arrested, and police were still searching for the second.

Davies was walking in New Orleans' French Quarter at 2030 local time on Sunday (0230 Monday GMT) when two men approached, police said.

He is in good spirits

Deke Arlon, Davies's manager
"He was walking east of the French Quarter with a female friend," said New Orleans police spokesman Captain Marlon Defillo.

"Two men walked up. They apparently took the female friend's purse. He chased them.

"One of those persons turned and shot him in the leg and we have arrested one person," Mr Defillo said.

Davies' manager Deke Arlon said: "He's in hospital but it is not really serious. He should be up and about in a day or so.

"The message that came back to me was that he is in good spirits."

Police said muggings were uncommon in the French Quarter, and that officers had been patrolling the streets at the time.

Premier league

Davies's wounding comes just days after he was awarded a CBE in the New Year's Honours list.

The Kinks have long been regarded as one of the UK's best-loved bands.

They emerged early in the decade to stake their claim among the premier league of British beat bands, second only among some music fans to The Beatles and Rolling Stones.

Davies' music personified Swinging London

Davies' wistful tales of love and longing, set to raucous rock riffs and melodic pop tunes, won the band a legion of young fans and established him as one of the most important songwriters of his generation.

The poetic vision of later songs such as Waterloo Sunset, Days and Autumn Almanac offered a snapshot of contemporary life - and a specifically English worldview.

Davies was briefly married to Pretenders lead singer Chrissie Hynde.

I don't know about that architecture. I mean, the old house look nice on the outside but foundation companies have to make a killing there. Not to mention, does anyone even have central heat?

Foundation repair is big business around here what with the sinking and all. So is termite damage control--we have monster flying Formosan termites that eat cats and babies. And I gots central heat, not that I've needed it this year--this is the first chilly day in weeks and it's still maybe light sweater weather.

I can't imagine what Ray could have been doing to get himself mugged during the Sugar Bowl--it was pretty crunk in the Quarter last night by all reports. Oh also GO LSU!!!! Woohoo! For a Heisman winner White sure throws a lot of crappy incomplete passes huh... and gets SACKED LIKE A BITCH.

two months pass...
Shooting victim Ray Davies of The Kinks recovering from wound
LONDON (AP) — Singer-songwriter Ray Davies of The Kinks, shot in the leg by a mugger two months ago, said he hopes to be “jumping around on stage” soon.
Davies, 59, leaned on a walking stick Wednesday as he appeared at Buckingham Palace to accept an honour from the Queen.
“I will get better and I’ll be back jumping around on stage,” said Davies. But, he added, “There is a lot of doubt whether I can perform in the near future.”
Davies wore a dark suit and tortoiseshell sunglasses as he was awarded the title Commander of the Order of the British Empire.
“This is for the people who supported my music over the years,” he said. “I’m kind of reluctant to collect rewards. I usually back out of ceremonies. I’m kind of a shy person.
“This is for the fans of my music. It’s theirs.”
Davies founded The Kinks with his brother Dave in the early 1960s. Their hits include You Really Got Me and Lola.
He was shot by a thief who snatched his friend’s bag as the pair walked in New Orleans in early January.
“I chased after him. I have been asking myself ‘why.’ One never knows how to react,” he said. “Other people have said they would do the same. That’s all I want to say about it.”

Charges dismissed after Kinks singer Ray Davies does not testify
NEW ORLEANS (AP) — Ray Davies, the longtime lead singer of the Kinks, didn’t return to testify against a man who allegedly drove a getaway car for a gunman who robbed Davies’s companion and shot the singer in the leg.
Defendant Jerome Barra was released Wednesday after prosecutors dismissed charges. District Attorney Eddie Jordan said the 60-year-old Davies had sent word to prosecutors that he is on tour and unavailable until December.
Barra, 26, was to face trial on charges of armed robbery and principal to aggravated battery in the Jan. 4, 2004, attack.
“We’ll see if we can reinstate the charges once the victim is able to return to New Orleans,” Jordan said. “But we do need victims in order to prosecute an armed robbery case.”
Police said Davies was walking with a woman near the edge of the French Quarter when a car pulled alongside the couple. A passenger jumped from the car with a gun, demanding that Davies’s companion give up her purse.
The woman complied, but Davies pursued the robber as he returned to the car. The robber turned and shot Davies once in the leg before getting in the car and fleeing, police said. Davies was treated for a minor gunshot wound.
Davies and his companion gave police the car’s licence plate number. About two hours later, police arrested Barra at the wheel. The gunman was never identified.
The Kinks, part of the ’60s British invasion, had a string of hits including You Really Got Me and Lola.

Damn, I guess I never thought about it but it's kind of crazy that our criminal justice system works this way. I guess there's not much risk in mugging foreign tourists when you know that they'll have to go out of their way to return a year and a half later if they want to press charges.

walter kranz (walterkranz), Saturday, 23 April 2005 05:53 (nineteen years ago) link

it's kind of crazy that our criminal justice system works this way

How should it work then, foreign tourists just send an email and dude gets convicted?

It's the same in the rest of the world. You actually need witnesses and "stuff" to convict...

Crazy criminal justice system.

I dunno. Speedy trial? N.O.P.D. get one tape recorder? I was halfway kidding but I kind of wonder if I got shot in the leg in New Orleans if I would bother to fly back a year later to testify in court.

walter kranz (walterkranz), Saturday, 23 April 2005 06:05 (nineteen years ago) link

I agree, I wouldn't fly back either, but it's kind of part of the deal of society if you want it to work. It would be convenient to have tape recordings and all, but do you want the New Orleans (or any) Police Department in charge of, or able to convict with, tape recordings?
