what artist, if any, is worth doing an ILM tracks poll?

when that volunteer list is made, I'll do beach boys. (I don't have to go first.)

Seems to me like there's a level of commitment required for one of these polls that I don't possess. I miss POXes!

I enjoyed the pavement poll even though I didn't participate (mostly because I felt there was too much material I was unfamiliar with). it got me to listen to wowee zowee, which I had owned for several years but never really gave enough of a chance.

I wish there were polls like this for other bands I'm not overly familiar with, if only to incite me to dig deeper into their catalog.

i completely support vigorous unrelenting enforcement of 1 at a time but can we wait until after the MC Tunes results thread?

I think one at a time, and one nominations thread running at a time. Otherwise people will just go mad for polling ever-more niche interest bands in this fashion and clogging up New Answers. Very reticent to fully take the breaks off the nerdy listmaking juggernaut.

Matt DC, Thursday, 16 June 2011 14:40 (twelve years ago) link

LBI that's fair enough re the success of the Pavement poll. It's just the combination of numerous polls (not really interested in big ILM polls anymore) and focus on these kinds of bands irking me.

I actually really like the Poll Reservation & Registration Thread idea

You don't need a nominations thread for a single band, though, do you? It's pretty obvious what's in their catalogue and not.

Not to beat a dead horse here, but I was really thrilled with that Pavement results thread. Tons of chatter and excitement, but the results weren't in the least predictable! Also, surprising, virtually no bitching! Anyway, if all the poll results threads could be that much fun to read, I'd love to see a lot more.

Sorry, Karen D, I forgot that's not how the Blur thing ran.

i have a decent familiarity with Pavement's catalog (heard all the proper albums before i realized i dislike them more often than i like them) and the results of that poll didn't look at all unpredictable to me tbh.

"one at a time" partisans, can we at least agree that once the reveal starts for X, the voting can start for Y?

Just because "Summer Babe" won and "Gold Soundz" placed high, didn't mean the rest of the poll was predictable. There were lots of non-album tracks and rarities, very cool to see which ones were the most loved.

the fey bloggers are onto the zagat tweets (jon /via/ chi 2.0), Thursday, 16 June 2011 14:59 (twelve years ago) link

I voted in the Blur poll, didn't in the Pavement poll and won't vote in the Manics. However even though I'm not a Pavement fan the enthusiasm and debate made it an interesting read. I don't know why some dude's so worked up about them, it's not as if they're hard to ignore. Matt DC's one at a time option seems a good compromise.

I agree the choices so far have been too indiecentric but those bands will soon be worked through and other bands/producers will get their chance to shine.

ps I bags the Pet Shop Boys poll.

Cluster the boots (Billy Dods), Thursday, 16 June 2011 15:01 (twelve years ago) link

I guess I'm not sure what the argument is here really. If people want to do a poll, so what? Just skip the ones you don't care about, tbh.

the fey bloggers are onto the zagat tweets (jon /via/ chi 2.0), Thursday, 16 June 2011 15:02 (twelve years ago) link

One-at-a-time is important I feel.

to take part in this kind of exhaustive poll, you really need to know the ins and outs of an act's catalogue pretty well

No! You just have to take part! Once enough people join in, the crowdsourcing element means any nonsense gets ironed out. I didn't do the Pavement one because I couldn't fill a ballot, but I did do the hiphop one despite lack of knowledge - it was sad to see all a hoy hoy's efforts going to waste for a while because people weren't stepping up.

Mr. John Scatman (some dude), Thursday, 16 June 2011 15:04 (twelve years ago) link

I think the point here is that the winner is never the most interesting part of these polls; it's watching the roll-out and debating the songs as they appear.

...wow! (Le Bateau Ivre), Thursday, 16 June 2011 15:06 (twelve years ago) link

Like, in the Blur poll, ppl were so enthusiastic about this entire swath of Blur that I never bothered with that I began to think that I actually might like the band outside of a few random songs; as it turned out when I started digging that wasn't really the case, but reading people's discussion of stuff was really fun.

Also, silly me thought that no one was mentioning "This Is A Low" because no one liked it, not because it was a predestined #1, lol.

anarcho-misogynist puppies (DJP), Thursday, 16 June 2011 15:07 (twelve years ago) link

yeah, the top 10 is almost always predictable, it's what comes before that which is interesting

peter in montreal, Thursday, 16 June 2011 15:07 (twelve years ago) link

I would also happily participate in a Belle & Sebastian one, loads of songs in that catalogue. I am another person who didn't vote in the hip hop albums because it would've been, you know, Jay-z, Wu Tang, Rob Base and Positive K. Figured it was better to leave for people who *know* hip hop well. I *know* Blur well so included myself in that poll!

Joni is a good choice. Beach Boys, Bjork, Bowie, Jay-z, Pixies.. I voted Radiohead as that's another catalogue I know really well (lol 15 year old in 1997).

some dude: I will rep for weird Pulp shit any day of the week! O.U. (Gone Gone)? Ansaphone? SRBSKI JEB? We can do this.

Madonna and Prince would be the two I would feel least qualified to vote in but most interested in following.

Mr. Patrick Batman (WmC), Thursday, 16 June 2011 15:08 (twelve years ago) link

Yeah, it's basically just a great chance to discuss artist X in real depth. Nothing to hate here, if it's not for you it's immediately obvious that it's not one to click on.

Ismael Klata, Thursday, 16 June 2011 15:08 (twelve years ago) link

AND the poll roll-out gives a structure and rhythm to the discussion, perhaps artificially extending the amount of time the participants in the results thread spend talking about and listening to the artist(s) in question.

OK, I had such fun doing the spreadsheet on the Aphex POIII that I bagsy the Aphex POLLL when it comes round.

Argh xp, Positive K *really* needed that single extra vote to make the 100

Ismael Klata, Thursday, 16 June 2011 15:10 (twelve years ago) link

As far as I can see there's been about seven threads devoted to single artist write in polls over the past month. It's hardly overloading the board, there's usually about half a dozen 'radio button' polls finishing each day.

Cluster the boots (Billy Dods), Thursday, 16 June 2011 15:10 (twelve years ago) link

What was the structure of the Pavement poll? 3 days to vote, 3 days' reveal? I think a 2-day reveal would be fine for all these, whether it's a top-50 or top-60.

Mr. Patrick Batman (WmC), Thursday, 16 June 2011 15:12 (twelve years ago) link

I do think nominations are a little silly for single artist polls; check a discography for yr eligible tracks.

There are also bands I want to do (or see) completely skewed, counter-intuitive polls to force critical re-evaluation on segments of material, like a post-1990 Depeche Mode poll or a no singles Orbital poll (obv not with a top 50, lol)

anarcho-misogynist puppies (DJP), Thursday, 16 June 2011 15:13 (twelve years ago) link

Ismael: damnit!!!! Honestly though I wouldn't be able to do 50 songs without adding 10 Jay-z, the Busta remix of Fantasy, etc. Woulda been laughed out of the thread.

she started dancing to that (Finefinemusic), Thursday, 16 June 2011 15:16 (twelve years ago) link

Eh, I ran out of time (lol work) but my ballot basically would have been "every song by my favorite x artists plus like 5 classics"

anarcho-misogynist puppies (DJP), Thursday, 16 June 2011 15:18 (twelve years ago) link

@DJP - New Order post-Technique poll? ::shudders::

Karen D. Tregaskin, Thursday, 16 June 2011 15:18 (twelve years ago) link

Yeah, the initial threads for the Traxpoll aren't so much a "nom" as a "bigup" for certain tracks.

Mark G, Thursday, 16 June 2011 15:18 (twelve years ago) link

KDT: Yes, exactly! Obv getting people to opt in would be difficult but I think there's some value in exploring/re-evaluating a band when they fall out of their "unadulterated genius" period

anarcho-misogynist puppies (DJP), Thursday, 16 June 2011 15:20 (twelve years ago) link

hey before the flood can we make a rule that only one of these can go on at once

clicked "like" button on this one

Yo La Tengo (27-year-discography, wide-ranging opinions about recent work) would be an interesting poll for a year or so down the line.
