that sounds perfect/adorable.

Somewhere between Fergie and Jesus (Alex in Montreal), Tuesday, 27 March 2012 14:01 (twelve years ago) link

things have been a little off with the boy lately - he's stressed with school and a few other things and fixating on like...tiny trivial stuff that i do that bothers him. i was contemplating whether we needed a bit of space and then he woke me up this morning in bed with 'i think we should take a break'

so... there's that.

I'm not even sure if it's a bad thing? Except he got really upset once he proposed it and didn't know if he wanted to. part of me feels like the only way to break out of the dynamic we've been in recently is to have a few weeks apart. but i'm not even sure if it's possible to shift the dynamic at this point.

do breaks ever *actually* work? or are they just sort of delusional?

Somewhere between Fergie and Jesus (Alex in Montreal), Tuesday, 27 March 2012 14:03 (twelve years ago) link

in my very humble opinion, alex, i don't know if taking a break will 'work' in the absence of frank, open dialogue, which i think is what's needed. i mean, just the fact that he has been fixating on minor annoyances says (to me) that he could be harboring some kind of resentment or holding on to some hurt and it's spilling over into your daily interactions. some time apart might make things easier but it doesn't really solve any of the underlying issues of your relationship. trust me, "state of the union" type relationship conversations are never fun and can be v scary but they are absolutely necessary in my experience.

i think this is serious (elmo argonaut), Tuesday, 27 March 2012 16:21 (twelve years ago) link

but maybe you've already had those conversations. i don't know, and i don't want to pry into your private life like that. i know it sounds like lame advice but sometimes you gotta talk it out until you're blue in the face and then keep talking.

i think this is serious (elmo argonaut), Tuesday, 27 March 2012 16:24 (twelve years ago) link

just remember to stick to "I-statements" :)

i think this is serious (elmo argonaut), Tuesday, 27 March 2012 16:26 (twelve years ago) link

so otm

desk calendar white out (Matt P), Tuesday, 27 March 2012 16:27 (twelve years ago) link

yeah, fair enough. there have been text messages exchanged to that effect, including a rescinding of the 'break' and i think we're going to have a state of the union conversation in a day or two. i think i just need a day or two to figure out where i'm at.

Somewhere between Fergie and Jesus (Alex in Montreal), Tuesday, 27 March 2012 16:27 (twelve years ago) link

xp

desk calendar white out (Matt P), Tuesday, 27 March 2012 16:27 (twelve years ago) link

lex pretend, Tuesday, 27 March 2012 16:32 (twelve years ago) link

ditto

Literal Facepalms (Dr Morbius), Tuesday, 27 March 2012 16:36 (twelve years ago) link

haha, i hope i don't come off like some self-appointed relationship guru, just want to share my perspective.

i think this is serious (elmo argonaut), Tuesday, 27 March 2012 16:36 (twelve years ago) link

sounds true enough. have nearly had relationships implode on me because we didn't have that talk.

althea and (donna rouge), Tuesday, 27 March 2012 16:40 (twelve years ago) link

the best part is that sometimes you realize that you're having the same conversation over and over again!

i think this is serious (elmo argonaut), Tuesday, 27 March 2012 16:46 (twelve years ago) link

He talked me into lunch today and we had a bit of the conversation. Tentatively, going well, especially compared to the totally distanced un-presence I've been getting for a few weeks. Acknowledgment of issues happened, which is new. Clearly, I'm waiting on follow through to some extent but it was nice just to feel validated about certain things. Allowing each other to ha e a bit more space is going to be key, and navigating criticism vs. defensiveness, but I think we're good?

Somewhere between Fergie and Jesus (Alex in Montreal), Tuesday, 27 March 2012 20:06 (twelve years ago) link

Sorry for bombarding y'all with unnecessary drama, I guess.

I've always wondered why Judy was a gay icon and that story sort of answered that question (I previously thought that it was just the pills and booze) and I sort of get it, but the her music says nothing to me about my life, I guess. Or actually IDK if it does b/c like Brodie, I only really know Somewhere Over the Rainbow and "that song about the train."

I’m only half-kidding. I have this theory that because of the holocaust that was the AIDS epidemic and its annihilation of the previous generation of gay men, the faith of our fathers risks extinction. Today, Judyism, like Yiddish, is little more than a vague cultural memory.

Standing outside a packed straight bar with friends last night, I was accosted by a wild-eyed drunk Croat who brought me over to his two friends -- a Hispanic who may have been a former or current lover and a blond very bro native-born American. Croat asks tentatively if I've a girlfriend or...a boyfriend? When I assure him I'm gay he hugs me tight and babbles about how cute I am, how nice I seem, and so on. He might've been cute himself but his sloppy state made it hard. We exchanged phone numbers and I returned to my circle.

Half an hour ago he sends me a text. I'm thinking of responding. Guess which in his group I was most attracted to though...

yeah i mean if it's a worthy charity then i wouldn't fault them for it, it's not like donna summer LPs are a rare commodity and if they can squeeze a little more out of the spike in demand then fair is fair. people paying $10 for a dollar record are suckers anyway, and if they cared about Donna Summer on vinyl then they'd already own it. my boyfriend is out of town this weekend so i've been lazying about the house, laying in my room where the A/C is cold, and intermittently masturbating. more or less.

we just crossed the sixth month mark o_o

his apt has central air (and cable!) and i have the keys so i've been very tempted to basically live there while he's gone since it's like 97 degrees here but i'm not sure how his roommate would feel about that

my bf lives in a garden unit below a family... really nice place w/ a few downsides (can't smoke weed in the house, little kids making noise 24/7) but CENTRAL A/C WOW

Oh! And yay @ j0rdan for six months! I think we're almost at a year and a half. I've pretty much just stopped counting at this point.

Side note: sudden painful one-side-of-head headaches during sex - not something to worry about, or impending Six Feet Under-style stroke? Google is giving me mixed messages on this. Apparently this is a common thing. But also a potential indicator of DOOM.

twinkin' and drinkin' and ready to fly (Alex in Montreal), Monday, 28 May 2012 15:00 (eleven years ago) link

xxp yeah that's nice

the dad of a friend of ours died last weekend so his boyfriend is meeting the family for the first time ever at the memorial, no word on how that went tho.

fapper don (J0rdan S.), Monday, 28 May 2012 15:02 (eleven years ago) link

Oh wow. That sucks. I think I finally will get presented to the family at the end of the summer? It requires a 6 or 7 hour trip to 'les régions' i.e. very far away from big cities, and a total lack of English. It'll be fun. And vaguely terrifying.

twinkin' and drinkin' and ready to fly (Alex in Montreal), Monday, 28 May 2012 15:07 (eleven years ago) link

that sounds terrifying/ripe for slapstick humor

fapper don (J0rdan S.), Monday, 28 May 2012 15:09 (eleven years ago) link

Eh. I'm not scared of the small towns or the lack of English. It's more like - making a good impression on your bf's parents is already terrifying, let alone in your second language, let alone when you're doing so in a province where language IS politics.

twinkin' and drinkin' and ready to fly (Alex in Montreal), Monday, 28 May 2012 15:14 (eleven years ago) link

kanye kardashian (lex pretend), Monday, 28 May 2012 15:16 (eleven years ago) link

Alex, are your headaches happening only while having sex?? Or during other physical activities?

I'm happily sporting a sunburn on most of my body. Looking forward to having even color this summer for the first time in years. Torso is a little too scorched, after some peeling it'll be toasty brown.

Pita Malört (Je55e), Monday, 28 May 2012 15:32 (eleven years ago) link

Less than some, more than others. Ideologically supportive, was constrained during the semester because my (Anglophone, upper middle class, international) university's faculties did not for the most part vote to strike. McGill tends to divide itself from the res of the student movement in the province, though, even compared to the other Anglo university, so the fact that four or five student unions got on board the strike was a big deal. There were always a decent minority of people in the law faculty who were supportive but after Bill 78 tons of friends who were otherwise dismissive of the movement have gotten on board. Unconstitutional laws apparently piss off law students. Go figure.

twinkin' and drinkin' and ready to fly (Alex in Montreal), Monday, 28 May 2012 15:33 (eleven years ago) link

Anyway, I've been going to more of the daytime marches and then casserole-ing in the evening. Night marches freak me out a bit because the cops are more aggressive then but I'll probably go to a few of them with some friends over the next few weeks.

That's pretty much how the gay threads started.

Welcome jer, I like gay sex and I hate most disco and most house music (even though I'm a gay Chicagoan).

They started because someone (who no longer posts in these threads) lamented having no IRL gay friends in town. Which isn't exactly the same thing, unless he was saying the reason he had no gay friends in town is because he wasn't gay enough.

If we're doing the gay things we like/hate, I love disco. Rhino's complete The Disco Years is my current workout playlist.

to welcome jer.fairall, pie is served. (jer.fairall), Friday, 15 June 2012 14:07 (eleven years ago) link

I have, like, no gay friends in town.

Gay things I don't like:
excessive gay political activism

Ha!

These threads have been around for 5 years now.

is there any, besides marriage or the military? being an O-bot, I guess. xp

btw I will start the summer thread tomorrow with whatever title comes to mind if no one else does. Eric started the winter thread in, like, October (so he could stay in and make lists).

i have been focused on traditional anglo-american ballads lately, my boyfriend and i have put together a 2 disc collaborative mix of them, so... that's exciting

I really have no clue as to what I meant by that politics thing.

Pangborn to be Wilde (Dr Morbius), Friday, 15 June 2012 14:23 (eleven years ago) link

"Excessive" political activism has never been my thing in any regard, tho.

old people are made of poop (Eric H.), Friday, 15 June 2012 14:23 (eleven years ago) link

the queerest one on the mix is 'willie o' winsbury' which is great: the king return from long captivity to discover his daughter is pregnant. she tells him it was poor willie what knocked her up, so he sends his men to capture and hang him. BUT when the king sees willie, he's like "DAMN, janet, i see why you fucked this dude, i would have hit that. ok you can marry him." xps

real men have been preparing manly dishes for centuries (elmo argonaut), Friday, 15 June 2012 14:25 (eleven years ago) link

Does that spring from inertia or realism? xp

elmo, I don't think I know that I know any trad Anglo-American ballads. What got you into them?

morbs, there were a lot of mixes during my courtship of dustin, i introduced him to shirley collins early on. combined with our mutual interest in folk music and a lot of record collecting and research, it's something that we both enjoy & enjoy sharing with each other? also murder ballads are pretty cool

Pangborn to be Wilde (Dr Morbius), Friday, 15 June 2012 14:43 (eleven years ago) link

most of the tracks are child ballads or their descendants, d. picked out british / irish / scottish recordings and i did american ones so there is a good helping of bluegrass / country / rockabilly type stuff there too.

you need some Sunday school, chile

Pangborn to be Wilde (Dr Morbius), Friday, 15 June 2012 15:04 (eleven years ago) link

Wow, we used to start new threads after so few posts.

Though I just looked and we're only at 567 here.

Are we living in a post-gaythread world?

They started because someone (who no longer posts in these threads) lamented having no IRL gay friends in town. Which isn't exactly the same thing, unless he was saying the reason he had no gay friends in town is because he wasn't gay enough.

He quit this thread b/c he said it had started as a place for gay folks who weren't into the usual cultural trappings of gayness, but it had turned into the opposite (plus apparently some personality conflicts w/ individuals). He said some of this via IM, but he did tell us off when he left.

Je55e, Friday, 15 June 2012 15:08 (eleven years ago) link

Funny you should mention Sunday school because I think it's my creeping atheism that's feeding my desire to not waste any available time being unhappy or reading books.

He quit this thread b/c he said it had started as a place for gay folks who weren't into the usual cultural trappings of gayness

I don't think he ever explicitly stated that. And the best thing about these threads has always been the clashing personalities. THAT is what's missing these days and what's kept post totals low.

My 7th Day Adventist upbringing gave me a really good understanding of the Bible, which led me to atheism. A lot of people think the SDAs are nuts, but they act nuts b/c they follow biblical law and principles without all the bullshit and pagan influences that the Catholics and governments introduced. E.g., they go to church on the 7th day.

Also, people think they are nuts b/c they are nuts in a way that is different from the majority of Christians.

Am I absent too often to be a regular anymore? I suppose so. I feel mostly like I don't have much to contribute to the discussion these days. Not doing anything particularly exciting and gay. Just living my mediocre domestic existence and trying to get my brain under control. :)

I promise at some point this summer there will be exciting and/or controversial stories to tell. Or not.

According to Wiki, Taco, Berlin, and Cameo all did versions of "Long Black Veil." Hmmm. Maybe Johnny Cash had a cameo at a Emmylou Harris concert in Berlin where they sang it and then had tacos afterward backstage.

which theater, chelsea clearview? if so, to be fair the non-amateurish ones like Weekend end up there also, and it's not really surprising that a minority-cast gay film isn't getting huge press.

that said, i knew i was going to pass on seeing "The Skinny" based on the trailer/writer/director alone.

ugh i'm dying for a non-terrible stateside gay movie to come about, i can't even remember what the last one i liked was past the 90s
