The moderators knew this and on multiple occassions assured that 77 would remain inaccessible to the the general public. I'm not usually into board lawyering, but this was truly uncalled for and could have irl consequences for people who expected that a private board would remain private.

If a few posters are breaking the rules, you have plenty of tools at your disposal that don't potentially harm many other posters who have done nothing wrong.

If mods don't want a secret board to exist anymore, I think the most sensible solution would be to...

1) keep the whole 77 board secret but completely lock it, so everything remains read-only, no new threads or posts can be made, and only people who were 77 members can find old threads via search, and

2) start a new 77 board that's open to everyone.

so heres the deal:

im not having an "emotional freakout", the point is that this is about the tenth time this shit has come up, and i have said over and over again that the only thing that is key about the existence of a secret board is that a clear line is drawn where there is absolutely zero tolerance for meta shit about people who are not on the board. it is cute to say that anyone can join 77 but everyone knows that that is not the case, plenty of people dont know it exists, and plenty of people dont feel comfortable emailing a mod to beg their way into some imaginary secret club. the problem is that a few entitled for no reason posters seem completely unwilling to make the simple concession of not talking shit about people. and the truth is, like i have said a million times, that was not really what 77 was ever about, but for some reason this was for some reason this one simple thing was just impossible for some people to accept. i tried the banning from 77 approach, on one of the least frequent offenders, and guess what? nothing changed. if you look upthread, i listed the people that i could ban the same way to fix this particular problem. guess how well that would have turned out.

tom and i are the focal point for weird stalky personal bullshit whenever anything happens to this board (note: wtf was the reason for this becoming all about me on this thread anyway, btw?), and you know what? its boring, and misdirected. as a result, yeah, when shit gets all heated, i do mention that the 2 of us have vocally defended 77, done stuff to maintain its survival, etc. because its true. apparently people have a problem with that as well, and if i could figure out why, id be glad to tell you.

anyway, if people prefer to have 77 locked, thats fine (well, as soon as i figure out how to lock a board i guess, which i assume is possible, i haven't ever done it before obv). but plz stop pretending that this is some sort of hardman mod blah blah blah. this was a board created by accident, and it was fun for a while, but the vast majority of ILX doesn't want it to exist. i know, because i get emails every so often about it from people ive never even heard of on the board. just because you have the time to post a billion times on ILX a day doesn't mean that you are better than them, and it doesnt give you any special rights or consideration. in retrospect, letting this thing happen for this long was probably a mistake, and as one of the main mod apologists for 77, i guess that is on me, so i apologize for that.
