nice to see the sleep at the bottom votes, since one of my closest friends played the guitar on that.

some of these songs seem so remote now, although if you'd told me they came out ten years ago I'd kind of blink...djed, for instance. wow that was quite a long time, adn I haven't listened to it in ages either, but it somehow doesn't seem that long. age and time flies.

akm, Friday, 2 October 2009 05:51 (fourteen years ago) link

Impossible task, but these are the first to come to my mind:

Bone Thugs-n-Harmony - Tha Crossroads
Touch & Go - Would You...?
Love Inc. - R.E.S.P.E.C.T.
Meshell Ndegeocello - Leviticus: Faggot
Ahlam - Mskin

10 great tracks off the top of my head -- mostly stuff I've been listening to lately:

Digable Planets - Black Ego
that dog. - Retreat from the Sun
Kelis - Caught Out There
Roddy Frame - Hymn to the Grace
Pram - The Mermaid Hotel
Oval - Mediaton
Tricky - Ponderosa
Cornelius - New Music Machine
Sam Phillips - I Need Love
Six Finger Satellite - Parlour Games

sleighdog mcdonald (unregistered), Saturday, 3 October 2009 15:56 (fourteen years ago) link

hmm, that Pram track is from the 00's, so it seems. I'll change that to "Pram - 'Chrysalis'" then.

sleighdog mcdonald (unregistered), Saturday, 3 October 2009 16:05 (fourteen years ago) link

currently my ten most listened to 90s tracks on last.fm

boards of canada - roygbiv
underground resistance - amazon
peshay - robotics
infiniti - game one
underworld - dark and long
808 state - reaper repo
carl craig - science fiction
dj shadow - changeling
shut up and dance - the green man
saint etienne - spring

curiously all but 2 of these are instrumentals

modescalator (blueski), Saturday, 3 October 2009 16:10 (fourteen years ago) link

This is very, very difficult.

Teh Movable Object (Nasty, Brutish & Short), Saturday, 3 October 2009 19:27 (fourteen years ago) link

OK, deliberately limiting myself to one track per 'artist':

1) Ride - Close My Eyes (Ride EP, 1990)
2) My Bloody Valentine - Off Your Face (Glider EP, 1990)
3) Slowdive - Slowdive (Slowdive EP, 1990)
4) Boo Radleys - Foster's Van (Boo Up! EP, 1991)
5) Telescopes - Ocean's Drive (untitled album, 1992)
6) Aphex Twin - Ageispolis (Selected Ambient Works 85-92, 1992)
7) PJ Harvey - Plants and Rags (Dry, 1992)
8) Hardfloor - Acperience 5 (1993? - I got it in 94)
9) Stereolab - French Disko (1993? - heard it on the radio then, but got it in 96)
10) Blur - Badhead (Parklife, 1994)

I seem to have used up my ten in half the decade...

Teh Movable Object (Nasty, Brutish & Short), Saturday, 3 October 2009 20:13 (fourteen years ago) link

Still need to add these, though:

11) Tricky - Ponderosa
12) Motorbass - Flying Fingers / Les Ondes
13) Boards of Canada - Turquoise Hexagon Sun

Teh Movable Object (Nasty, Brutish & Short), Saturday, 3 October 2009 20:17 (fourteen years ago) link

it must have made it a little easier to have everyone on your list be from the same general geographical region.

scott seward, Saturday, 3 October 2009 20:18 (fourteen years ago) link

What - Europe?

Teh Movable Object (Nasty, Brutish & Short), Saturday, 3 October 2009 20:21 (fourteen years ago) link

Should really include Dee-Lite - Groove Is In The Heart as well.

Teh Movable Object (Nasty, Brutish & Short), Saturday, 3 October 2009 20:23 (fourteen years ago) link

they all make me think of england. though they are not all from there. i actually have no idea where hardfloor is from. and boards of canada are from canada, right?. same queen anyway.

scott seward, Saturday, 3 October 2009 20:26 (fourteen years ago) link

Hardfloor were German. Motorbass were French, I think. I might be wrong, but I think Boards of Canada are/were Scottish.

Re: selections - Ride could easily have been Seagull or Chelsea Girl instead. My Bloody Valentine should probably have been Soon, but that's just too obvious. Boo Radleys could easily have chose something off of Giant Steps, but I really like that earlier EP. Telescopes could have been You Set My Soul instead. Aphex Twin could easily have been any of about 20 tracks from SAW I, SAW II and I Care Because You Do. Blur could have been Beetlebum. Motorbass is kind of cheating choosing two tracks, but they run straight from one to the other and I think of them as one thing.

Teh Movable Object (Nasty, Brutish & Short), Saturday, 3 October 2009 20:28 (fourteen years ago) link

or they make me think of english music magazines anyway. not criticizing! just saying, it would be easier to make a list of music if you excluded, like, 80% of the world from it.

scott seward, Saturday, 3 October 2009 20:29 (fourteen years ago) link

I had a whole load of Sri Lankan jazz and Nigerian skiffle bubbling under my top 13.

six months pass...

'Everlong' is killing me right now and it wasn't even my favorite song off of that album. Might be getting nostalgic because everyone I known is in the process of parting ways... moving to different cities, different circles of friends, getting married, working all day long, etc... and the lyrics and the memories they evoke are aching very hard today.

Moka, Thursday, 22 April 2010 03:15 (fourteen years ago) link

I hate when music makes me feel nostalgic. Sod 'everlong', then. You will never be one of my favorite songs of the 90s, 'everlong'. Never!

Moka, Thursday, 22 April 2010 03:17 (fourteen years ago) link

Play Filter's 'Take a Picture' to go along with the feel of 'Everlong'
