NROWorld returns to regularly scheduled programming:

Hey, despair is a sin, so stop frowning! Elections come, elections go, but (yes, this is leading up to a sales pitch) great literature endures. Get your kids some great of NR’s wonderful new books this Christmas – you can order them safely and happily at the NRO Bookstore.

I wonder how much advice Grand Moff Baker gave the prez. Firing Rumsfeld is the kind of pragmatist decision only he could recommend.

in a surprising turn of events, rumsfeld was seen openly swigging from a large silver flask while whipping golf balls at the heads of reporters he didn't like

Bush actually did pretty well, I think. Fairly articulate, though still flailing about trying to cover his ass and spin the losses at points. He was right to smack down the reporter who asked him to explain the comments made two days ago about Rumsfeld staying on about forty-five seconds after he'd already explained himself. His justifications (hadn't met w/ people, made final decision, not wanting to announce it right before election) were valid.

He may have some surprises up his sleeve for possibly Schwarzeneggerification of last two years of his presidency, but I guess we'll see.

He has no surprises. He has no reason for living anymore - already "showed up his daddy" (two terms, captured Saddam = I R THE BESTEST take that Daddy who never believed in me), and there's no more elections for him to win. He's lost, adrift, a rudderless boat.

bye bye, Hastert

Rep. John Boehner (news, bio, voting record) of Ohio, currently the majority leader, is expected to run for leader, and Rep. Mike Pence (news, bio, voting record) of Indiana announced during the day he also will seek the post. Joe Barton of Texas has signaled he may join the field.

It was a riot of exampleless assertions, vague generalizations, and opinions masquerading as some kind of poor man's version of a David Brooks cultural critique.

Poor man's David Brooks??? Thats liked watering down sugarless kool aid.

yeah i he seems to be trying to shift himself from party hack to some sort of meta-pundit to save his career. i saw him reporting from lebanese beach a couple months ago ponderously intoning abt how things can always get worse as if the is was some sort of deep lesson he had learned from iraq that he's going to share with us now.

One Frenchman, teacher Jean-Pierre Charpemtrat, 53, said it was about time U.S. voters figured out what much of the rest of the world already knew. "Americans are realizing that you can't found the politics of a country on patriotic passion and reflexes."

wait, a FRENCH guy said that???

and what (ooo), Wednesday, 8 November 2006 20:01 (seventeen years ago) link

Fave freakout quote from Atlas Shrugs

But let's not kid ourselves. The American people have been clubbed to death like baby seals by a drive by, jihad loving media and it took its toll. Years and years of lies and propaganda had its effect.

Elvis Telecom (Chris Barrus), Wednesday, 8 November 2006 20:02 (seventeen years ago) link

In Sri Lanka, some said they hoped the rebuke would force Bush to abandon a unilateral approach to global issues.

yeah, it's stuff like this that trips me out; the idea that other people are watching the live CNN Intl feeds and slavering over them minute-by-minute as much as we are here. (or even moreso, in some cases)

gabbneb (gabbneb), Wednesday, 8 November 2006 20:16 (seventeen years ago) link

McCain kind of waffled about Iraq's effect on the elections: first he said he had no doubt it was the major cause of lost Republican seats, but then he pointed to corruption as being a bigger cause. like there's no chance it could be both?
