Incidentally, how does one use winrar (or whatever it's called) without it fucking up one's winzip? I mean, this some crazy shit.

PJ Miller (PJ Miller 68), Thursday, 13 July 2006 09:50 (seventeen years ago) link

I've recently been reinvestigating their back catalogue.

God, I love Loop.

huh?

GOD PUNCH TO HAWKWIND (yournullfame), Thursday, 13 July 2006 09:56 (seventeen years ago) link

It seems to override all winzip functions, files, etc.

PJ Miller (PJ Miller 68), Thursday, 13 July 2006 10:26 (seventeen years ago) link

during install there should be an 'associate winrar with these filetypes' checkbox. uncheck that checkbox. oh, too late.

in winzip there may be a 're-associate winzip with these file types', check that box. ('options menu - configuration - system tab' on mine).

so, where to start with loop? (i have wolf flow)

koogy wonderland (koogs), Thursday, 13 July 2006 10:32 (seventeen years ago) link

Koogsy, I think you'd like their earlier stuff better - Heaven's End or World In Your Eyes.

I mean, normally I'd say Fade Out should be the starting point, but knowing your tastes, I think you'd like the... prettier, more psychedelic stuff at the beginning.

Thom Yorke Is My Spirit Guide (kate), Thursday, 13 July 2006 10:34 (seventeen years ago) link

I used to have Heaven's End, Koogs. That's good. You may find yourself swinging your hair around in a psychedelic manner - don't frighten the coot chicks!

Your winrar explanation makes sense.

This happened some time ago, it's not now. I just wonder whether I dare try winrar again.

I think I should give it a go.

I have one of those little memory sticks so that I can download things at work to supplement my meagre income.

the wimpier stuff you mean? why i oughta...

koogy wonderland (koogs), Thursday, 13 July 2006 10:40 (seventeen years ago) link

No, trust me, Loop were never wimpy. They just seem more like Pale Saints, JAMC and other stuff you like in the earlier days.

Thom Yorke Is My Spirit Guide (kate), Thursday, 13 July 2006 10:44 (seventeen years ago) link

thank you, random mp3 blog!

Actually, Koogs, I think the first album has some crossover with the Peel Sessions. But I could be wrong. You never know.

Hmm, the one time I saw them live, they were all "oh no, I've got a really bad cold, ok?" like Neil from the Young ones.

mark grout (mark grout), Thursday, 13 July 2006 12:57 (seventeen years ago) link

aw man, wolf flow...shit is tight. "afterglow" is like my favorite song of the last three months.

FAN DEATH (teenagequiet), Thursday, 13 July 2006 12:59 (seventeen years ago) link

Yes, they were a bit like Neil.

PJ Miller (PJ Miller 68), Thursday, 13 July 2006 13:33 (seventeen years ago) link

OK, apparently Robert was a miserable sod, but their MUSIC was never wimpy, alright?

Don't know what this site is but saw it when i googled loop and registered just to ask a couple of questions and seems like people use the answer board as a chat of sorts so i ask. i recently bought a gilded after someone recommended to me and was a little put off by the complete inaudibility(?) of the vocals-i have to strain my ears just to barely hear them. Is this how the vocals are or is it my stereo? And based on the other entries and i didn't read all of them so my Q's could already have been answered, it seems like some of the people here can find loop CDS pretty easy.maybe cause you guys are from uk but in my town in california, about 30 miles or so from san francisco, i have gone to various record stores for the past year or so hoping to find a loop cd, among other 'shoegazer' bands in the bins, there never was one. Not until i went on a family trip to monterey did i find a used copy of AGE (to my delight and later displeasure) in some out of the way shop. So some advice on tracking them down would be nice and my last q is was Heaven's end released in the uk only and is availble only as an import in the us? an answer would be nice. and i think h&stc's first album is great-enjoyed it more than AGE which if i said in person to some fellows on hear i would probably be killed but oh well.

Good grief, what was this store? My family lives in Carmel and who knows what else might be tucked away there.

As for inaudible vocals, well, that's kinda the way Robert sung then!

Anyway, welcome, but a tip -- don't say "I didn't read the rest of the thread responses" or anything like that. Actually *read* them first. We're here to help. ;-)

"31.10.06. Loop reissues
I'd like to announce, after much pleading, badgering, coercement etc. from many (THANK YOU!), that I am finally putting the wheels into motion on a LOOP Reissue programme. No formal plans have been made as yet, it is very, very, very early days and it may take some time, but the intent is there after all this time. Seeing that 2007 will mark the 20th Anniversary of the release of HEAVEN'S END, I feel I have no excuses left to leave the material out of print. Hopefully, a full and extensive remastering process will be involved, but that's all I can say right at this moment. I will certainly keep you all up to date with further postings... "

Hey, nice. Just so long as we get tons of rarities or something...

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 21 November 2006 13:50 (seventeen years ago) link

I'd be happy if they were only remastered...my Loop CD's all sound sludgy...(and not intentionally so)...

great news; I slept on getting fade out for years and years and then when I finally went to buy it it was OOP and out of my price range.

kyle (akmonday), Tuesday, 21 November 2006 17:21 (seventeen years ago) link

L, OOP?

You've Got Scourage On Your Breath (Haberdager), Tuesday, 21 November 2006 17:22 (seventeen years ago) link

I found my copy randomly used for something like $5, so yay smug me.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 21 November 2006 17:24 (seventeen years ago) link

I bought it - on vinyl - when it came out.

I have teh dronerock cred! Nyeah!

(But it, with all my vinyl, is still in storage at my mum's house. Bah.)

I will probably get all the reissues anyway. Coz I'm sad like that.

Breaking Under The Crush (kate), Tuesday, 21 November 2006 17:29 (seventeen years ago) link

YAYYY!!!!! I just got A Gilded Eternity from LaLa and luckily paid nothing for it (well, technically like $1.75...) but chyea this is exciting to da max.

less-than three's Christiane F. (drowned in milk), Tuesday, 21 November 2006 19:21 (seventeen years ago) link

A Gilded Eternity sounds fine even today, but the earlier stuff could use remastering (then again, I would say that, based on my criticisms upthread).

NoTimeBeforeTime (Barry Bruner), Tuesday, 21 November 2006 19:27 (seventeen years ago) link

"Collision" could do with a remaster as the vinyl sounds *much* better.

I.M. From Hollywood (i_m_from_hollywood), Tuesday, 21 November 2006 19:31 (seventeen years ago) link

I have Fade Out and A Gilded Eternity on vinyl. Still need to get the vinyl of Heaven's End

Brigadier Lethbridge-Pfunkboy (Kerr), Tuesday, 21 November 2006 19:53 (seventeen years ago) link

REISSUES: AWESOME.

especially since i slept on the early releases (though i did get much of them as cutout casettes for $1 each - thank you coconuts).

I've just come across this site while looking for (free!)LOOP mp3s and can't believe pepole still have so much time to devote to this band so many years on.

Heaven's End was/is a great album and was my soundtrack to many a hazy evening. That meld from Too Real To Feel to Fix to Fall still gets me!
There really was something about LOOP - I travelled from Dublin to London a couple of times to see them play and their gigs were like an open invitation to space out. great light show too.

My girlfriend at the time was particularly upset about how excited i got at laying my hands on a gorgeous pink sleeved World in Your Eyes album. She didn't undersatnd my enthusiasm and I can only guess that she wished I'd show the same level of enthusiasm and childish excitement toward her. Needless to say, she's now an ex.

Anyway, glad to see that LOOP continues to inspire such enthusiasm from new listeners. If it's worth anything, I too would love to hear a remasterrd Heaven's End, (if you ain't hearing it on vinyl you're probably ain't hearing it at its best) but that's just being picky.

Trust me, you've found the right board for it (and welcome!). I admit I was hoping this was more about the reissues!

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 31 January 2007 21:35 (seventeen years ago) link

Me too.

Brigadier Lethbridge-Pfunkboy (Kerr), Wednesday, 31 January 2007 21:39 (seventeen years ago) link

Not really concerned about re-issues - tho prob won't be able to resist if I come across them. Having said that, I'm reassured that there are others who appreciate a good thing when they hear it. Pfunk, ta for link to rhampsons page above

Look, I really can't stand it. There's got to be a better place to post about Loop than the goddamn "best shoegazing band" thread. I mean wtf?
They were the fucking shit though. Oh yes they were. Do you know what I really think about them is that they predicted American grunge. Yep. I'm serious. They knew exactly where it was all going to go. Come on damnit, Loop. They make me feel like I'm 16 again for sure.

So yeah...predicted American grunge. Anyone wanna take me on? Let's argue about it, if need be. I'm ready.

Also the goddamn ARC LIGHT 12"

Bimble Is Still More Goth Than You, Sunday, 4 May 2008 23:22 (sixteen years ago) link

Does anyone remember "Arc Light"? Jesus won't one person tell me they remember that riff.

Bimble Is Still More Goth Than You, Sunday, 4 May 2008 23:22 (sixteen years ago) link

I remember "Arc Light"...I still have the CD single...there was a "radar" and a "sonar" version, or something like that...truly awesome riff...I do kinda like the flip, "Sunburst", a little more though...

henry s, Monday, 5 May 2008 01:59 (sixteen years ago) link

I actually like "Arc-Lite (Radiated)" most of all.

Spencer Chow, Monday, 5 May 2008 02:05 (sixteen years ago) link

I always thought this band was seriously underrated in the weeklies. I noticed a kind of hostility towards Loop and they always seemed to lump them in with Spacemen 3 which I didn't really understand (always preferring Sonic, Jason and co.). Sonic also seemed to hate them (some story about them ripping off his idea).

Spencer Chow, Monday, 5 May 2008 02:10 (sixteen years ago) link

Spacemen and Loop, both great bands, no need to fight over it, Sonic... :)

stephen, Monday, 5 May 2008 03:10 (sixteen years ago) link

There was some actual bad blood re: ripoff accusations! Elvis T. can tell the story.

Ned Raggett, Monday, 5 May 2008 04:39 (sixteen years ago) link

the hostility was mutual, as I recall in interviews back then...I wonder did they ever rumble?

henry s, Monday, 5 May 2008 13:17 (sixteen years ago) link

Loop were awesome.
whats the difference between the tracks "the nail will burn" and "the nail will burn (burn out)" from the Gildered Eternity?
is it a joke?

Zeno, Monday, 5 May 2008 13:35 (sixteen years ago) link

oh, it's prob a different mix (very slightly), a bonus track that doesnt appear as such in my cd version at least

Zeno, Monday, 5 May 2008 13:42 (sixteen years ago) link

from the same area and sound, i waqs impressed by Strobe, like the psychedelic version of Loop. Sea Beyond the Sun was awesome.
