"I've got this uncle, Uncle Leo - every time he sees a bottle opener with big teeth, he thinks it's anti-semitism."

there are three types of people in this life:

1. people who didn't know Ronaldinho is mostly famous for having massive big gums 'n' teeth (being the best footballer in the world comes a close second) and therefore can be forgiven for thinking the bottle opener is racist as long as they now rescind their views in light of this new information,

2. people who, in full possession of the denticular (warning: may not be real word) facts, believe this bottle opener to be racist, and who are consequently just plain wrong, and

3. people who think this is a quality item celebrating the gigantic gnashers of a certified genius, albeit one who has a tendancy to showboat instead of, you know, just getting the job done.

Roberto Spiralli, Thursday, 22 March 2007 19:17 (seventeen years ago) link

they've made a product that resembles a canonical odious racist image--again, it was my first association upon seeing the bottle-opener

I have to say, it wasn't mine. I saw Ronaldinho as a bottle opener, and LMAO. Because I didn't even THINK it was in any way racist I showed it to my (black) co-worker and he also laughed too hard, again not seeing how it could be racist. Maybe it's just cos us Britishers know Ronildinho and his massive teeth better than the USers.

Yeah okay Nick if you're blissfully unaware of racist caricatures of bucktoothed east Asians (reaching their apex during a war I'm pretty sure British people remember) then it's kind of hard to take you seriously as an even-handed judge of bottle openers versus historically racist representations.

nabisco, Thursday, 22 March 2007 19:19 (seventeen years ago) link

maybe british people are just stupid????

Mr. Que, Thursday, 22 March 2007 19:19 (seventeen years ago) link

I couldn't find any bottle openers for this guy:

If any of the British don't know who John Elway is, suffice to say that it was serendipity that he played for the Denver BRONCOS.

No that's where I was - the suggestion that it might be more complex than that was what had me confused.

I can't believe Dan picked up on the 'Show Boat' reference I'd shoehorned in to signpost my hidden racist agenda. Or not so hidden, as it turns out.

Yeah okay, I get why the image itself fits in with a lot of racially stereotypical stuff down the years, but as the Brits are saying, it's drawing attention (and paying AFFECTIONATE homage) to his somewhat exaggerated teeth. Race didn't enter into ANY of our (British) considerations.

unfished business, Thursday, 22 March 2007 19:32 (seventeen years ago) link

FITS PERFECTLY INTO = can be made to fit into if taken entirely out of context

Roberto Spiralli, Thursday, 22 March 2007 19:37 (seventeen years ago) link

I think it's somewhat laudable to be at a stage where iconography like that is tied directly to one person and is not indicative of an entire culture.

Having said that, if you can recognize WHY someone would associate that bottle opener with largely racist iconography, don't foist this disingenuous "oh but I just don't UNDERSTAND why you'd think it was racist!" bullshit on us. So far, the most cogent argument has come from Johnny B, largely because he simply said, "It never occurred to me to look at it that way" and didn't spend time lambasting people who DID associate it with darkie-deco.

HI DERE, Thursday, 22 March 2007 19:37 (seventeen years ago) link

So should Ronaldinho never be caricatured because he happens to be a buck toothed black man? Isn't picking such features out the whole point of caricature? While I'm at it, since when was having big fucking gums a black stereotype?

onimo, Thursday, 22 March 2007 19:38 (seventeen years ago) link

can someone point me to the non-racist history of stuff that looks like this bottle opener? like, anything else?

and what, Thursday, 22 March 2007 19:38 (seventeen years ago) link

you can't just go through the world all willfully blind to this stuff, though, guys! it's there whether you acknowledge it or not. I kind of hate race, too, and wish I could be free of ever thinking about it again, but this is the world we inherited.
