there's nothing wrong with love, surely

extremely demanding on the hardware (ciderpress), Friday, 25 September 2009 19:30 (fourteen years ago) link

You know how cats will like, knead things and how totally contenting it feels if you're lying down and a cat comes up and kneads your leg or whatever? Temporarily Blind kneads my brain like that, which is one of about 10 reasons that KILAS wins this for me.

kingkongvsgodzilla, Friday, 25 September 2009 19:32 (fourteen years ago) link

though "randy describes eternity" is my fav song by them i think

not included here, but I love the Live record -- probably mostly for the Calvin Johnson-less "Virginia Reel" ...

tylerw, Friday, 25 September 2009 19:47 (fourteen years ago) link

Yeah, I'd vote for Live if it were here; as it is, I voted for Perfect From Now On; first two songs and then "Velvet Waltz" are ace, esp. "Velvet Waltz".

Euler, Friday, 25 September 2009 19:53 (fourteen years ago) link

"Randy Describes Eternity" is my favorite BTS song too. One of my favorite songs, period (.)

Wee Tam and the lolhueg (Jon Lewis), Friday, 25 September 2009 19:54 (fourteen years ago) link

^ yes!

cwkiii, Sunday, 27 September 2009 07:14 (fourteen years ago) link

also: "I Would Hurt A Fly", from 4:06 on, is perfect.

cwkiii, Sunday, 27 September 2009 07:16 (fourteen years ago) link

perfect from 4:06 on?

cutty, Sunday, 27 September 2009 16:48 (fourteen years ago) link

I wonder if the people who vote for TNWWL would put KILAS second, and vice versa. They both seem to have a similar indie-pop sensibility, whereas Perfect has always sounded much more ambitious to me. Or just more serious perhaps, I don't mean denigrate those first two, it's still a pretty ambitious take on indie-pop.

this must be what FAIL is really like (ledge), Monday, 28 September 2009 14:07 (fourteen years ago) link

I put KILAS first and PFNO second. My choices having more to do with quality than sensibility. I think TNWWL has some great songs, but also some filler, which puts it on a par with You in Reverese.

kingkongvsgodzilla, Monday, 28 September 2009 14:14 (fourteen years ago) link

To expand, both Perfect and Keep It sound like Martsch at the top of his game to me. They are both "ambitious" in terms of songwriting. However, I feel like repetition contributes a lot to the length of the songs on Perfect, which made it really hard for me to get into at first. It had to grow on me. Most of the songs on Keep It get in and out in a reasonable amount of time and still incorporate the rich variety that marked the songs on Perfect.

kingkongvsgodzilla, Monday, 28 September 2009 14:20 (fourteen years ago) link

I'd certainly put Keep It second (after Perfect), it is indeed just about as rich and detailed. But it's lacking the extra instrumentation of Perfect (ok just a cello and mellotron but they add a hell of a lot) and some of the songs just don't work so well for me. E.g. the intro to Time Trap has perhaps the best guitar layering I've ever heard, but when the song proper kicks in I just lose interest.

this must be what FAIL is really like (ledge), Monday, 28 September 2009 14:27 (fourteen years ago) link

the answer is TNWWL and anyone who disagrees apparently likes semi-wack old guy built to spill. that said TNWWL is twee and emo as fuck, it has twin falls on it for chrissakes.

yellow card for favre (call all destroyer), Monday, 28 September 2009 14:28 (fourteen years ago) link

I like Built to Spill where Doug Martsch sounds like he has earned his beard rather than just wearing one.

great band

it's not what it should be (state of the world today), Thursday, 1 October 2009 18:21 (fourteen years ago) link

Carry the Zero is in my estimation the pinnacle of BTS, so Keep it like a Secret gets my vote.

Look for the record with me on the cover!

There's Nothing Wrong With Love.

They (he) have let me down since with all that sprawling and endless Youngy widdling.

I preferred Dinosaur (Jr) in their earlier days too and draw parallels for the same reason

In the Morning,Big Dipper, Car and Twin Falls.

I'm way too old and should know better but don't

Fer Ark, Thursday, 1 October 2009 23:38 (fourteen years ago) link

There is No Enemy is really good. Pleasantly surprised.

pfunkboy (Herman G. Neuname), Tuesday, 6 October 2009 00:03 (fourteen years ago) link

I can't believe Ancient Melodies nearly beat out Keep it like a Secret. That's just crazy.

The World's Biggest Christ (Z S), Tuesday, 6 October 2009 00:05 (fourteen years ago) link

did ancient melodies get a bad rap from us critics as it didnt here(UK). Its like the same with wowee zowee by pavement.

pfunkboy (Herman G. Neuname), Tuesday, 6 October 2009 00:08 (fourteen years ago) link

I don't know about the critics, I'm just speaking for myself. It's decent, but not even in the same league as the three that preceded it imo

The World's Biggest Christ (Z S), Tuesday, 6 October 2009 00:12 (fourteen years ago) link

i agree but i still like it

pfunkboy (Herman G. Neuname), Tuesday, 6 October 2009 00:13 (fourteen years ago) link

its my 4th fave easily. it does get a bad rep on ilm so maybe some wanted to show support for it? its not like it beat the other 3 anyway.

pfunkboy (Herman G. Neuname), Tuesday, 6 October 2009 00:13 (fourteen years ago) link

I too am amazed that Ancient Melodies came anywhere near beating KILAS. And bummed that NO ONE voted for Ultimate Alternative Wavers, which is a pretty cool little record. sadface

That's not just me saying that, that's the Pentagon. (contenderizer), Tuesday, 6 October 2009 00:16 (fourteen years ago) link

I'm gonna assume that everyone likes Wavers, but it's just not anyone's favorite?

We're gonna destroy their van, we're gonna destroy their faces (Jon Lewis), Tuesday, 6 October 2009 18:17 (fourteen years ago) link

that's what I'm assuming too. some of their best songs on there. like I said upthread, it's the slightly wonky production that pushes it down a bit. always love it when they play stuff from that record live.

tylerw, Tuesday, 6 October 2009 18:18 (fourteen years ago) link

is "ultimate alternative wavers" the same thing as "the normal years" or was "the normal years" just not polled because it's a singles collection?

congratulations (n/a), Tuesday, 6 October 2009 18:21 (fourteen years ago) link

no it was their debut album.

Got that impression when I saw them last year at Primavera. For literally the whole set he was complaining to the sound guy at the side: the drums were too loud, guitars too quiet, just an endless litany of whiny complaints. Stop being a precious muso, stfu and play yr songs.
