that really sucks, is what I meant to say

(I can't bring myself to post to RIP threads or even birthday threads but somebody totals an automobile I'm all over it. Nice going)

sorry to hear this rev

J0rdan S., Thursday, 29 May 2008 03:09 (fifteen years ago) link

It's cool, Tombot. No offense taken.

The Reverend, Thursday, 29 May 2008 03:12 (fifteen years ago) link

this is so sad!

Surmounter, Thursday, 29 May 2008 03:14 (fifteen years ago) link

Metro Transit's website tells me the fastest bus trip to and from work is about an hour and forty minutes, which will be but down to an hour and ten minutes after I move.

The Reverend, Thursday, 29 May 2008 03:16 (fifteen years ago) link

cut down

The Reverend, Thursday, 29 May 2008 03:16 (fifteen years ago) link

well that's a little better

Surmounter, Thursday, 29 May 2008 03:24 (fifteen years ago) link

must have been terrifying

Surmounter, Thursday, 29 May 2008 03:25 (fifteen years ago) link

That totally sucks, sorry to hear it.

HI DERE, Thursday, 29 May 2008 03:35 (fifteen years ago) link

Damn. Sorry Rev, that sounds awful.

Ned Raggett, Thursday, 29 May 2008 04:06 (fifteen years ago) link

Oh man, Rev. You have my condolences. When my car got totalled I felt like I'd killed one of my best friends.

Abbott, Thursday, 29 May 2008 04:30 (fifteen years ago) link

My car-totaling was both a thrilling near-near-death experience and in a weird way a relief at not having to deal with all the crap that was wrong with my car.

Hurting 2, Thursday, 29 May 2008 04:32 (fifteen years ago) link

aw sorry rev :( if it makes you feel any better (and i know it won't but i'm trying) i just spent 10 months doing hour and 15 to two hour trips to work (depending on transit situations)

tehresa, Thursday, 29 May 2008 04:37 (fifteen years ago) link

Gave up driving for 5 years after car-total. Prob not an option for most.

libcrypt, Thursday, 29 May 2008 05:02 (fifteen years ago) link

how rotten. sorry about that.

Maria, Thursday, 29 May 2008 10:40 (fifteen years ago) link

Thanks for the condolences everyone.

I wish I could give up driving (and part of my reason for moving was that it would allow me to cut down on driving), but giving up driving altogether isn't really feasible for me at this time. I work in kind of a weird place where there really isn't any viable point A to point B connector via public transit, even though it isn't really that far away in the grand scheme of things.

rev, Thursday, 29 May 2008 21:55 (fifteen years ago) link

Is carpooling an option, Rev? I've never tried it before myself with Metro, so I can't say...what about their Flexcar program?

Bimble, Thursday, 29 May 2008 22:02 (fifteen years ago) link

My friend who I work for said he'll give me rides home (but not to) for the time being, but I'm way out of his way. The Flexcar thing is a good idea, I'll look into that. Thanks.

rev, Thursday, 29 May 2008 22:22 (fifteen years ago) link

sorry rev, but glad you are okay.

estela, Thursday, 29 May 2008 22:25 (fifteen years ago) link

Rev, I am sorry and suprised to hear this. And you are a good driver! (And I do not say that often!) Was this a driving into/under monster truck situation? That'll total any car.

the higgs, Friday, 30 May 2008 00:35 (fifteen years ago) link

ay, under

rev, Friday, 30 May 2008 00:44 (fifteen years ago) link

oh man Rev, so sorry to see this thread! I'm glad you're okay.

Flexcar got bought out by Zipcar - I use them occasionally.

Jaq, Friday, 30 May 2008 00:50 (fifteen years ago) link

wait, rev = The Reverend? that's some sub-tomboto shit

mookieproof, Friday, 30 May 2008 01:09 (fifteen years ago) link

yeahyeahyeah, "rev" = images-off account

rev, Friday, 30 May 2008 01:17 (fifteen years ago) link

I just witnessed a church van try to beat a red light very late, clip a fairly clean hi-riser caddy, do a 180 and damn near roll over.

two years pass...

Drove over a piece of metal (piece of a truck or container or something) that looked like cardboard but wasn't. Loud banging noises, two right tires shredded, front wheel blocked (brake, probabaly, damage on the underside of the car. I'm fine, but damn you, anonymous truck driver. I expect my insurance will go up because in principle you have to be able to avoid or stop for everything that's on the road and stuff. :-/

one year passes...

so got into a minor accident last friday - car is perfectly fine except for dents + scrapes, and driver's side door won't open because of the weird way in which the front quarter panel is dented.

reported the accident to my insurance company, and the other driver did to theirs as well - now they are offering to pay out-of-pocket for my repair, to avoid premiums

any experience with this? I thought you were supposed to offer the out-of-moeny stuff before filing a claim w/ the insurance companies

three years pass...

so last week, I was in a parking garage trying to park so I could see Spectre. for some reason, there was a queue going up all the way to the second level so while there were tons of open spaces, I couldn't really park because I had no space to pull out enough to get into it.

in a dumb move, I tried to negotiate one of the spaces and on doing so, lightly rubbed the back bumper of a car. the person was in the car so I apologized, said it was my fault, and once I managed to be able to park legitimately, got out so I could give her my info. she called the police but as she told the police nobody was injured and the damage was under $500, as per FL law, they said they didn't need to come by. the damage was minimal to both cars - you can see a scratch on my bumper, her damage wasn't even visible in the poor lighting but I assume I left a paint trade given how mine looked. she was polite in the end and we went our separate ways.

the claim that I expected was filed, which was fine. However, then the adjuster asks me if she was in the car at the time. I stated I thought she had just gotten out, but couldn't remember clearly. He then tells me she says she was in the car and reported that she is "sore" now.

I try not to pull the "that's impossible" card because I know injuries can happen even during low speed collisions, but this wasn't a rear end collision at say 10 mph where the impacted car actually vibrated or moved forward after being hit. It was a slight rub of one bumper against another at 3 mph - the damage was so minimal you can't even see from a distance. No denting or crumpling. And she's trying to report an injury?

I also realize that injuries don't immediately show themselves, but she reported to the police at the scene that she wasn't hurt and again - the car did not move, it just rubbed. I'm typically one to give benefit of the doubt, because I know even a ten mph rear-end could hurt someone, but it seems suspect that this slight paint trade would cause her significant pain, especially after she reported no injury at the scene. also, she used exaggerated language at the scene (she actually said "You wrecked my car!" when she got out and suggested I'd been drinking at one point when I hadn't had one all night).

am I likely to get screwed on this one? I took a picture of my vehicle's bumper and sent it to my claims adjuster this morning to show how minor of an impact it was.

yeah, it's not uncommon for people to get encouraged by friends/family/etc to claim unproveable crap like whiplash in an attempt to get more money from your insurance.

fuck you, your hat is horrible (Neanderthal), Saturday, 4 November 2017 22:37 (six years ago) link

At least unlike the last time...I was sober and not at fault.

Happened 100 miles away from home. Totalled. Oi...after a 70 hour work week.

Xrays and ct scans mostly fine tho

Gary Synaesthesia (darraghmac), Saturday, 4 November 2017 22:45 (six years ago) link

I was in a partner clients building for the week and decided to go see Cannibal Corpse in Jacksonville after.

Strange, poorly lit area in the left lane and this older man had his truck sitting on the median, hanging into my lane. No lights on, didn't see him, plowed into his back end.

He was the nicest guy and apologized to me and everybody tended to me.

All things considered..coulda been worse. Windshield cracked, both bags deployed, but i'm ok. Just emotionally drained but relieved

fuck you, your hat is horrible (Neanderthal), Saturday, 4 November 2017 23:40 (six years ago) link

Never made it to the show.

Was smelling airbag dust for hours. Awful scent

fuck you, your hat is horrible (Neanderthal), Saturday, 4 November 2017 23:41 (six years ago) link

I'm extremely glad you are intact. That's awful. I hope you had no emotional attachment to the poor contraption.

Clearly this is because earlier today I thought, out of nowhere, "you know what band nobody has mentioned in my presence lately? Cannibal Corpse."

glad to hear yr ok, car accidents are scary

brimstead, Sunday, 5 November 2017 00:41 (six years ago) link

thanks all. neck pain is better, actually was never that bad. found a degenerative disc condition in my neck but I'm willing to bet they would have found that pre-accident too.

psychologically, I was initially a mess, but had so many friends call me to check on me.

this work project is cursed. the following has happened to members of my team:

Original analyst (which is my job) got laid off
Domain mgr had to go on leave due to boyfriend w/ life-threatening condition
Customer service manager totaled *HIS* car falling asleep at the wheel last weekend
now I wrecked mine

there's only one dude left who has gotten away scot free.

Clearly that guy should just not leave whatever room he's in. Glad you're in one piece for sure.

Glad you're doing alright man

Headbanging strengthens the neck muscles! \m/

StanM, Thursday, 9 November 2017 01:14 (six years ago) link

haha i did joke to my friends that I expected the injuries I sustained on Friday night, but that I got them from a different activity than originally planned

fuck you, your hat is horrible (Neanderthal), Thursday, 9 November 2017 01:19 (six years ago) link

got new wheels. fatigue has been a huge problem since the accident. neck doesn't hurt but definitely feels 'crick'-y at times.

still...good week considering.

fuck you, your hat is horrible (Neanderthal), Saturday, 11 November 2017 06:02 (six years ago) link

two months pass...

this blows

i was rear-ended last wednesday. i suffered a concussion, was home resting pretty much all last week

the insurance rep called me this week and lets me know that my car (that i just spent $1800 on repairs 5 days before the accident) has been deemed a total loss. they will only pay for my rental car for 10 days. i haven't even thought for a second about buying a new car, a decision i thought i wouldn't have to make for another 3-5 years and would be able to spend months researching. now i have 10 days to do it!
