this record is brilliant yeah, listened to it more than anything else this year probably. quite surprised by how both the big ballads are so good, after initial "this sounds like what u2 make" reservations about "my sunshine" i've been listening to it loads now. don't like "runway" too much tho.

I for one welcome this new Nazi ILX (Local Garda), Tuesday, 22 September 2009 22:01 (fourteen years ago) link

guess i really gotta listen to this again

three months pass...

wow fuck me, i've been sleeping on this album like crazy. loving some of these deep cuts, "buh bye" is killing me

guardian nagle (k3vin k.), Tuesday, 19 January 2010 02:32 (fourteen years ago) link

i've sort of slept on this album except for imma star but i think theres a really good chance i would like it?

call all destroyer, Tuesday, 19 January 2010 02:34 (fourteen years ago) link

i really want to like this album based on posts on ilm but i can barely listen to this guy sing longer than 15 mins and not many of these songs hold up to "birthday sex"

J0rdan S., Tuesday, 19 January 2010 02:38 (fourteen years ago) link

i love the production on "birthday sex" but songwise i think "imma star" and "buh bye" are in the same conversation

guardian nagle (k3vin k.), Tuesday, 19 January 2010 02:39 (fourteen years ago) link

see that's the weird thing--i think i like his singing?

call all destroyer, Tuesday, 19 January 2010 02:40 (fourteen years ago) link

what else has Mick Schultz produced? sounded like LOS to me

xp yeah his voice has really grown on me too

guardian nagle (k3vin k.), Tuesday, 19 January 2010 02:41 (fourteen years ago) link

whoa why did i capitialize mick schultz there

guardian nagle (k3vin k.), Tuesday, 19 January 2010 02:41 (fourteen years ago) link

it sounds very teenage to me-- it has that reedy quality a la beiber tbh

J0rdan S., Tuesday, 19 January 2010 02:41 (fourteen years ago) link

"buh bye" is great and so is "my ride"

cogito, ergo some dude (dyao), Tuesday, 19 January 2010 02:42 (fourteen years ago) link

this could get me in trouble but kinda sounds like a much more confident and sound chris brown

guardian nagle (k3vin k.), Tuesday, 19 January 2010 02:43 (fourteen years ago) link

I really like that trick where part of the beat drops out and it's just him singing the chorus or whatever, like towards the end of 'imma star' and 'my ride'

cogito, ergo some dude (dyao), Tuesday, 19 January 2010 02:44 (fourteen years ago) link

sarge how do you feel about "break up to make up"? that song is a pure joy to me.

HOTT LUNCH II HARDEEZ (some dude), Tuesday, 19 January 2010 02:45 (fourteen years ago) link

chris brown is a better comparison than bieber yeah -- but i think chris's songs work more because of their teen pop trappings

J0rdan S., Tuesday, 19 January 2010 02:47 (fourteen years ago) link

the production on "raindrops" !!

guardian nagle (k3vin k.), Tuesday, 19 January 2010 02:49 (fourteen years ago) link

ship i really dig that song except for the insanely retarded metaphor in the chorus -- what's with this song & the new jt/timbo & fast food? anyway, the production on this album definitely surprised me -- altho it prob shouldnt have bcuz of how many subtle production tricks are in "birthday sex" -- and it's def why i keep wanting to like the album

J0rdan S., Tuesday, 19 January 2010 02:49 (fourteen years ago) link

i've kinda tuned out the lyrics -- "break up/make up" is a big red flag at lazy couplets ahoy -- but the vocals and the melody, especially on the bridge, are so great. baby James and I have bopped along to that song many a time.

aww

call all destroyer, Tuesday, 19 January 2010 03:04 (fourteen years ago) link

^^how can anyone dislike the song now

guardian nagle (k3vin k.), Tuesday, 19 January 2010 03:04 (fourteen years ago) link

i held off listening to the album for ages b/c "birthday sex" was so perfect, but in that fragile don't-know-if-i-want-any-more way - it's a lot better than i thought it would be, but i think i agree w/jordan about his voice - it doesn't bother me in small doses but so much reediness over 45 mins is a bit much.

لوووووووووووووووووووول (lex pretend), Tuesday, 19 January 2010 11:03 (fourteen years ago) link

i'm streaming this right now--i think i just really like the sonics of it enough to carry the parts where the songs or his voice aren't quite up to par? so i'm like on the cusp of purchasing it but with my self-imposed 2 records/week limit not totally sure if/when that'll happen.

call all destroyer, Monday, 25 January 2010 18:29 (fourteen years ago) link

i'm so glad i put this on my ballot, just listened again today and it just gets better

k3vin k., Monday, 25 January 2010 19:16 (fourteen years ago) link

I was just listening to 'raindrops' on headphones and when the thunder sound happened I actually took my off my headphones and looked out the window

i'm with stupid ☞ (dyao), Tuesday, 26 January 2010 01:22 (fourteen years ago) link

"imma star" is on constant rotation here on kauai right now and i'm totally hooked. that little vocal glissando on "ice" is genius.

pshrbrn, Thursday, 28 January 2010 04:20 (fourteen years ago) link

"imma star" is so good to nod your head to

لوووووووووووووووووووول (lex pretend), Thursday, 28 January 2010 08:59 (fourteen years ago) link

did i mention that starting all over is the classic deep cut

plaxico (I know, right?), Wednesday, 3 February 2010 00:35 (fourteen years ago) link

OTM, besides the singles which are all incredible the can't-live-without-em cuts are "starting all over," "my sunshine," and "buh bye"

rasta batman gigolo (k3vin k.), Wednesday, 3 February 2010 00:38 (fourteen years ago) link

i shall always be inordinately fond of this album, the one thing that felt like it really came right out of nowhere to steal my heart in 2009.

and the kid had good videos too.

Agree re the Jeremiah album, endlessly pleasurable to listen to.

Tim F, Wednesday, 3 February 2010 01:30 (fourteen years ago) link

haha that reminds me whenever i search for one of his videos on youtube it always autocorrects to 'jeremiah'

rasta batman gigolo (k3vin k.), Wednesday, 3 February 2010 01:35 (fourteen years ago) link

I have a Google Autocorrect in my brain it seems.

i dunno it's weird, i never really thought we'd ever hear from this guy again for some reason...?

<3 HURRAH THOUGH

r|t|c, Saturday, 5 June 2010 13:26 (thirteen years ago) link

inevitable procession of the luda verse makes this track seem more slight and generic than it really is, needed to assert itself a tad longer before and maybe even during. still v v v good though - schulz is a beast, like who else other than these guys would bother chipmunking the chorus so very lightly like at 3mins

r|t|c, Saturday, 5 June 2010 13:45 (thirteen years ago) link

hey what a good song

man this is good

fman29.5 (k3vin k.), Saturday, 5 June 2010 17:55 (thirteen years ago) link

and yeah the schulz production is great, he really owns this sound

fman29.5 (k3vin k.), Saturday, 5 June 2010 17:58 (thirteen years ago) link

I like, but could do without the Luda verse really (though on first listen that could just be knee-jerk thanks to Bieber)

billy, Saturday, 5 June 2010 18:04 (thirteen years ago) link

yeah luda's unnecessary but doesn't really take away from it for me - def hope the next album is light on guests

fman29.5 (k3vin k.), Saturday, 5 June 2010 18:10 (thirteen years ago) link

first album is a classic to me now

who is schulz?

what it feels like for a goon (The Reverend), Sunday, 6 June 2010 01:59 (thirteen years ago) link

Mick Shultz, guy who produces all of Jeremih's stuff and amazingly hasn't been snapped up to work w/ anybody else major yet afaik
