i wish i could have some coffee right now! but i'll be up till 2 if i do

harbl, Monday, 21 September 2009 23:20 (fourteen years ago) link

i have a 2 cup french press and a larger-sized percolator ... the percolator, for some reason, probably due to needing to be scrubbed, will brew half coffee and half hot water, so I'll pour the water back in through the grounds compartment, which is annoying and inconvenient.

however, it only does this when I use it and not when the bf uses it.

my policy is that coffee is an aid and should not be difficult.

estela, Monday, 21 September 2009 23:23 (fourteen years ago) link

get rid of that gaslighting perc.

estela, Monday, 21 September 2009 23:24 (fourteen years ago) link

the french press fits my policy that everything should be a struggle

harbl, Monday, 21 September 2009 23:29 (fourteen years ago) link

i also sometimes forget i put hot water in it and don't remember until 15 minutes later (you're supposed to wait just 4 minutes). still good!

harbl, Monday, 21 September 2009 23:29 (fourteen years ago) link

wait is that $6 for 16 oz. of french press coffee?!

harbl, Monday, 21 September 2009 23:30 (fourteen years ago) link

the french press reassures me that I can still have coffee if the electricity goes out.

also, I've developed a pleasant morning routine of smoking a cigarette out the kitchen window to time the wait before plunging.

i'm like theresa, i've had the same cheap coffee grinder for like 10 years with no problem.

i've never understood the thing about using a coarse grind for a french press. well i understand that you don't want the grounds to seep through the screen but whenever i try a coarse grind, the coffee tastes weak. so i grind it fine and it doesn't really clog up the filter and the coffee is good. i also tend to let the water sit way too long before pushing the plunger down

congratulations (n/a), Monday, 21 September 2009 23:32 (fourteen years ago) link

the coarse grind/french press thing was something i learned from an ex-boyfriend who was indoctrinated with this while working at starbucks.

yeah you don't have to do it the coarsest but i do one tick back from coarse and it's pretty strong. what annoys me about the cheap grinder is so many beans don't get ground up enough. i can deal with a little mud. i think i'm just the only person in the world who can't use a coffee grinder properly.

harbl, Monday, 21 September 2009 23:35 (fourteen years ago) link

i think the coarsest is for turkish and the second coarsest is french press ...

my other display name is a controversial mod edit (sarahel), Monday, 21 September 2009 23:37 (fourteen years ago) link

no turkish is really fine! powdery

harbl, Monday, 21 September 2009 23:37 (fourteen years ago) link

the machines at the supermarket just have pictures

my other display name is a controversial mod edit (sarahel), Monday, 21 September 2009 23:38 (fourteen years ago) link

i think the second coarsest is usually meant for percolator

harbl, Monday, 21 September 2009 23:38 (fourteen years ago) link

mine doesn't have different settings, you just hold down the button for longer periods of time

congratulations (n/a), Monday, 21 September 2009 23:38 (fourteen years ago) link

yeah i mean the grocery store's grinder settings

harbl, Monday, 21 September 2009 23:39 (fourteen years ago) link

or "supermarket" if you prefer lol

harbl, Monday, 21 September 2009 23:39 (fourteen years ago) link

i think there are different ones for electric and non-electric percolators ... with non-electric being coarser

i also have one of these but it makes weak coffee

harbl, Monday, 21 September 2009 23:40 (fourteen years ago) link

i know a guy that had one of those and he'd brew the coffee then microwave it

my other display name is a controversial mod edit (sarahel), Monday, 21 September 2009 23:41 (fourteen years ago) link

you have a lot of coffee problems harbl

Mr. Que, Monday, 21 September 2009 23:41 (fourteen years ago) link

i know, i'm not good at coffee. as i said.

harbl, Monday, 21 September 2009 23:42 (fourteen years ago) link

i used to grind my coffee at home but i didn't notice a huge difference so i just grind it at the store. also, i have gotten *multiple* compliments on my coffee, so. . .

Mr. Que, Monday, 21 September 2009 23:44 (fourteen years ago) link

hmm this guy says he has perfected manual drip. maybe i'll go back to it next time i buy a pound, just to remember what it's like.

harbl, Monday, 21 September 2009 23:44 (fourteen years ago) link

this is insanity

I hear that the optimum brew temperature is around 208 degrees Fahrenheit. Since it’s boiling at 212 at my current elevation, I simply turn off the gas and swish it around a bit.

Here I am “blooming” the coffee by saturating it with water for between 15 and 45 seconds. Note the bubbles as the coffee expands like foam. This is carbon dioxide escaping, which helps the grounds stay submerged in the water instead of floating during the brewing. Now, I don’t know if any of this is true or not, but it is kinda fun to watch the coffee foam up.

Mr. Que, Monday, 21 September 2009 23:45 (fourteen years ago) link

well i want to grind it at home so i can buy more coffee at a time on the internet (cheaper) but i guess it's not such a big deal

harbl, Monday, 21 September 2009 23:46 (fourteen years ago) link

yeah i would not bloom the coffee. tbh i think the manual drip makes coffee to acidic somehow. i also like my coffee oily.

harbl, Monday, 21 September 2009 23:46 (fourteen years ago) link

too

starbucks ex taught me to do this as well.

lame

Mr. Que, Monday, 21 September 2009 23:48 (fourteen years ago) link

i don't like starbux anyway!

harbl, Monday, 21 September 2009 23:49 (fourteen years ago) link

i have no idea whether it actually does anything, but i do this with french press coffee out of habit, and it comes out great.

my other display name is a controversial mod edit (sarahel), Monday, 21 September 2009 23:50 (fourteen years ago) link

thinking about carbon dioxide=you're thinking too much about chemistry, and not enough about coffee

Mr. Que, Monday, 21 September 2009 23:50 (fourteen years ago) link

i'm not really thinking about carbon dioxide ... it was just one of the steps he used, and i'd never used a french press before dating him, so i just followed his steps

my other display name is a controversial mod edit (sarahel), Monday, 21 September 2009 23:51 (fourteen years ago) link

mr. que what kind of coffee maker do you use

harbl, Monday, 21 September 2009 23:52 (fourteen years ago) link

i just use a drip maker and really good coffee (whole foods morning buzz)

Mr. Que, Monday, 21 September 2009 23:53 (fourteen years ago) link

i make mine the trad way but it usually ends up being vv strong and proper. i get beans from these dudes, they've got a lot of good shit.

i have a cuisinart coffee maker

omar little, Monday, 21 September 2009 23:54 (fourteen years ago) link

is it the cuisinart grindnbrew

harbl, Monday, 21 September 2009 23:54 (fourteen years ago) link

oh wait that wouldn't make any sense would it

harbl, Monday, 21 September 2009 23:54 (fourteen years ago) link

yeah i think half of it is i make it strong

Mr. Que, Monday, 21 September 2009 23:54 (fourteen years ago) link

anyway my parents have that and it makes good coffee but if you use it wrong (like me) it will spill hot water all over the counter. actually i think it's broken.

harbl, Monday, 21 September 2009 23:55 (fourteen years ago) link

let's give it up for coffee, the greatest creation in the history of the world

Mr. Que, Monday, 21 September 2009 23:55 (fourteen years ago) link

harbl you need a coffee intervention--i'm worried about you
