ooo... 5 fingers! gross!

sunny successor, Thursday, 29 May 2008 14:23 (fifteen years ago) link

I finally opened my copy last night. Instead of being run over by the jet taxiing on the runway, I got stuck to the landing gear and dragged around aimlessly for 15 minutes, or so, with cops and helicopters shooting at me the whole time.

Garrett Martin, Thursday, 29 May 2008 16:15 (fifteen years ago) link

Why did you only finally open it last night, out of curiosity?

Will M., Friday, 30 May 2008 16:00 (fifteen years ago) link

The end of the last mission was kinda weird. SPOILERSSSSSSS I killed Dmitri in some bushes, and couldn't even see him apart from the fact that my gun was locked onto him. I was like "that's it?"

polyphonic, Friday, 30 May 2008 16:34 (fifteen years ago) link

I found out today that if you shoot or crash into the fuel pumps at gas stations they explode. Great fun in a cop shoot out.

Mr Raif, Friday, 30 May 2008 20:12 (fifteen years ago) link

pretty much anything that looks like it was designed to hold something combustible explodes, and frequently in different and exciting ways. the developers should be praised for understanding what is important in a game like this, on this point anyhow.

Roberto Spiralli, Friday, 30 May 2008 20:18 (fifteen years ago) link

Is it just me, or was this the easiest final mission in the history of GTA? (Can't vouch for GTA 1 or 2, or Liberty City Stories). It was a complete cakewalk.

polyphonic, Friday, 30 May 2008 20:32 (fifteen years ago) link

Did nobody else struggle with the timing of the boat and Jacob's helicopter? That shit took me about twenty attempts, rest was easy tho yes.

Ste, Friday, 30 May 2008 20:53 (fifteen years ago) link

and i thought VC Stories was the easiest one so far

Ste, Friday, 30 May 2008 20:54 (fifteen years ago) link

and i thought that gta3 had the best final mission, altho i can't even remember liberty city stories last mission

Ste, Friday, 30 May 2008 20:55 (fifteen years ago) link

Yeah, I loved the GTA3 final mission. And Vice City's final mission was immensely appropriate for that particular story.

Also, every single vehicle chase/race in GTA4 is easier than the very first race in GTA3.

polyphonic, Friday, 30 May 2008 21:42 (fifteen years ago) link

Did nobody else struggle with the timing of the boat and Jacob's helicopter?

Both times, I just accelerated toward the helicopter and the cinematic began.

polyphonic, Friday, 30 May 2008 21:43 (fifteen years ago) link

Vice City was quite special, it almost had 3 big endings - the taking over of Diaz mansion which enabled the property second half, the bank robbery which for most probly was the final property mission, and then the final mission which resembled Scarface's last stand. Awesome.

Ste, Friday, 30 May 2008 22:02 (fifteen years ago) link

(nb i haf not played more than a couple hours of this at a friends)

i'm most disappointed by the lack of vehicle trick-out stuff in this! i know how pointless it was in SA, but i still liked it. wasn't there a rumor way back that maybe IV would have performance mods, like you could soup up the cars and not just give them better rims? or was that just a wish.

gff, Friday, 30 May 2008 22:03 (fifteen years ago) link

i'd not heard of that.

and yes races in gta4 seem highly poor, no challenge at all.

Ste, Friday, 30 May 2008 22:09 (fifteen years ago) link

polyphonic: yes! I also had a "shot him in a bush, suddenly I'm a winnner" moment.

Ste: Sorry, no, didn't have any trouble grabbing the chopper...

JimD, Saturday, 31 May 2008 03:37 (fifteen years ago) link

I went back and played a couple missions in GTA3 last night. The cars are about twice as fast.

I got that today too! Must be a lot of them around this weekend.

JimD, Saturday, 31 May 2008 19:49 (fifteen years ago) link

Which one did you shoot czn? Mine was jimmy2646 (or something, don't remember the actual digits).

JimD, Saturday, 31 May 2008 19:49 (fifteen years ago) link

Nice!

I'm off a Rockstar hunting.

ledge, Sunday, 1 June 2008 00:08 (fifteen years ago) link

it's a viral achievement folks

Jeff LeVine, Sunday, 1 June 2008 00:14 (fifteen years ago) link

Oh huh, if you take revenge instead of taking the deal, the ending is way more fun.

polyphonic, Sunday, 1 June 2008 00:26 (fifteen years ago) link

i made my million, it's a quiet personal achievement

Ste, Sunday, 1 June 2008 00:55 (fifteen years ago) link

xp to jeff, yeah i figured it was viral when i got it after playing just one single game, a 10 min deathmatch in algonquin with no radar blips, in which i saw only two other players, one who killed me and one whom i killed.

ledge, Sunday, 1 June 2008 01:07 (fifteen years ago) link

what does it mean, a viral achievement ?

Ste, Sunday, 1 June 2008 09:18 (fifteen years ago) link

nevermind i found out, that kinda sucks

Ste, Sunday, 1 June 2008 09:26 (fifteen years ago) link

maybe, but the other way would have sucked too, having an achievement only achievable through sheer dumb luck.

ledge, Sunday, 1 June 2008 10:42 (fifteen years ago) link

Zombie outfits all round then!

http://forums.gametrailers.com/showthread.php?t=416510

Seems they changed their minds about it this week, it's only just become viral.

JimD, Sunday, 1 June 2008 11:54 (fifteen years ago) link

well it sucks in the fact that what they've named the achievement is actually nothing of the sort, and therefore seems largely a waste of time.

Ste, Sunday, 1 June 2008 12:25 (fifteen years ago) link

contains spoiler ...

and just a little bug, if you ever want to take advantage of it, I found last night, whilst taking random cars to Stevie's garage.

Supposedly you get full wack for a tip top condition car. I found out that if you just ever so slightly give your car a little dent (just a really slow collision into something will do), you get almost $500 more on top of the max payment.

Ste, Sunday, 1 June 2008 12:29 (fifteen years ago) link

what they've named the achievement is actually nothing of the sort

Well, they've renamed that too, apparently. It was "kill a rockstar employee", now it's just "kill a rockstar".

JimD, Sunday, 1 June 2008 13:11 (fifteen years ago) link

Since they changed that achievement multiplayer has been working perfectly for me, I used to get disconnected from about 4 out of 5 matches before, so they seem to have sorted that out at the same time, which is fantastic.

No ladyzombie outfit though :(.

limón, Sunday, 1 June 2008 16:38 (fifteen years ago) link

Have been playing a lot of free mode on multiplayer recently. Of course you can just tool around the city in single player but it's somehow more fun when there's other real life people there, even if they're just strangers. Of course you get more than a fair share of twats just trying to turn it into deathmatch; but I've had some good times, just driving round, picking people up, heading into the museum to fuck shit up, getting police stars and teaming up to fight off the cops...

ledge, Sunday, 1 June 2008 22:54 (fifteen years ago) link

I played multiplayer for the first time on my own xbox live account today. The very first person I shot gave me the rockstar achievement.

polyphonic, Sunday, 1 June 2008 23:06 (fifteen years ago) link

how many people are on the servers max? question relates especially to freemode

Ste, Monday, 2 June 2008 09:58 (fifteen years ago) link

I dunno, sometimes when it's full of twats and I've tried to leave and join a new game, it's dumped me back in the same one repeatedly, which suggests fewer than 16 people. Which can't be right. Why do you wanna know?

ledge, Monday, 2 June 2008 12:16 (fifteen years ago) link

ok, got the rockstar achievement also on my first kill last night too.

I had the best deathmatch ever too, so it was a terrific night.

Euler, Monday, 2 June 2008 13:05 (fifteen years ago) link

oh just wondering, just curious.

deathmatch is pretty decent, some hilarious deaths.

Ste, Monday, 2 June 2008 13:15 (fifteen years ago) link

Owing to an autosave cock-up, I lost everything I did on Saturday, which means I have to get all tooled up do Manny's missions again

OH LOOK A PASSING POLICEMAN IS ANGRY AT ME SHOOTING A LOCK OFF A DOOR OH LOOK SOMEBODY'S HEADSHOTTED ME WITH A SHOTGUN THE SECOND I WALK THROUGH THE FUCKING DOOR AFTER SPENDING FIFTEEN PAINSTAKING FUCKING MINUTES DRIVING HERE IN A WAY THAT DOESN'T "SPOOK" A DRUG DEALER HOW ABOUT THAT

I JUST WANTED YOU TO KNOW THIS

MPx4A, Monday, 2 June 2008 13:33 (fifteen years ago) link

I hated that mission too. Not a brick to be found 500 yds away from that place.

I kept getting frustrated this weekend losing missions, so I just played suicide bomber. Walk into a traffic jam, stand between a couple of cars, pull the pin... the death scenes for explosions and death-by-cop are intense. I detonated myself off of the Empire State Building at one point, and the screen faded out before I ever hit the ground.

Pleasant Plains, Monday, 2 June 2008 15:23 (fifteen years ago) link

MPX4A: go topside, not front door.

You know what would be awesome? a (spoiler)(/spoiler) tag for ILG that just makes the text color white (or the same as whatever your background is) so to read it, you could have to highlight he text and/or copy it to a notepad depending on your browser.

because seriously reading this back is like WAIT SPOILER UH SPOILER? SPOILER SPOILER
