2) Rockism is the ideology that some popular music is more authentic than others. Originating from the British press in the early 1980s; Rockism is suspicious of the use of non traditional instrumental equipment. This includes both physical and spiritual properties used in the creation of music. Synthesizers and “Easy-Make” tools are frowned upon. The same applies to to “manufactured pop music.” Rocksim proponents argue that such music is created on assembly lines by hired record producers; thus creating soulless and inferior music. Subsequently, all commercialized music is regarded as impure. As stated earlier, this applies to all music, not just rock itself. One may be “Rockist,” yet express a genuine passion for R&B in a “rockist” style. A noted subtext of Rockism states that, at one point in time, “They got it right.” Rockists cite a period of time (generally accepted as the 1960sor 1970s) in which music was in its purest form; namely rock. Although there are many ways to define Rockism, meaning there is no absolute interpretation of it, the overall premise is rock is the norm of popular music.

4) Sufjan Stevens. Although Deerhoof is interesting as well, I find the music difficult to get in touch with. Sufjan Stevens speaks with heart and soul; this is portrayed through both his usage of sound and lyrics. In addition to this, he ventures into the use of various sounds and playing styles with his music. Although the same is true (if not to a greater extent) for Deerhoof; the music feels more like a collage or cut and paste operation of various sounds. Whereas these new and unique sounds may please the ears of some, I find it troublesome. The music is all over the place, and therefore, retains a minimal amount of passion. Although I prefer Sufjan Stevens; both artists are unique and fantastic in their own way. In the end, however, the eye-opening lyrics of Sufjan Stevens topple the whimsical tunes of Deerhoof.

Oink Administrator,

Sorry I haven't responded, busy with work. In regard to your question, I don't play any instruments (just a boombox). I paint houses and work hard, but I love listening to good music, preferably indie music. I hear oink is a great source and I'd love to be a part of the community (and appreciate it). Let me know and I'll give you my email address.

Thanks,

Jesus fucking christ.

At least post a picture of a house you've painted.

Indiemusicianman,

Since you misrepresented yourself in regards to playing an instrument, we now have a 6th question for you. Put honesty before brevity.

Is Brian a fair boss? Describe his managerial style (answer in paragraph format, eight sentence minimum).

Oink Administrator, Saturday, 19 May 2007 03:22 (sixteen years ago) link

Oink Admin,

Brian Greene is a really cool guy! I've worked with him off and on for the last four years now. He's more of a friend than a boss. I go camping with him and some of our other friends quite often. If I could bid a job like him, I wouldn't need to work for him. I know how to paint, but he knows how to price a job. He's a good manager, good people skills, fair prices. On a side note, I also designed the company logo, webpage, and T-shirt. Anyway, If you decide I'm worthy of an invite, here's my email address: indiemusic✧✧✧@hotm✧✧✧.c✧✧

Thanks,

2) What is rockism? Rockism is an critical term for the ideology which promotes rock music as the superior genre of Music. Citing values which are specific to rock music such as writing your own songs and playing your own instruments, which are not so important in genres such as disco, pop, Hip Hop and dance music as the most important factors in musical quality. The focus on authenticity amongst rock music means that "manufactured" pop groups are seen as frivolous in comparison. As rock music has traditionally been dominated by white men, some have argued that the ideologies that form rockism are inherently racist. The poptimist movement, therefore, could be seen to mirror the feminist art history promoted by Roszita Parks and Griselda Pollock, which sought to find new contexts for art history, which did not marginalise women artists.

3) Post a link to your favorite picture of Cat Power http://www.newcenter.com/tastefest/2006/media/photos/MOTORCITY_CASINO_MAIN_STAGE/CAT%20POWER%20&%20THE%20MEMPHIS%20RHYTHM%20BAND.jpg a classic admittedly, but still very lovely.

4) Which artist is better, Sufjan Stevens or Deerhoof? Deerhoof. While I have, in the past, had time for Sufjan Stevens' Illinois, which at times matches the sweeping ambition that drives it (Sondheim unplugged is my favourite description), the indie rock sugar rush that Deerhoof have plyed across their substantial studio releases, is a firm favourite of mine. The guitar psychotics, arhythmical drums and droning cute-girl vocals take the best pop music apart and put it back together in a way that's crooked, spooky and full of fun neon giddiness. Holy Night Fever is one those songs that you dance to the guitar line for! And their last album was probably the best one yet, if only for Kidz are so Small. The music they make gets better the more it characatures itself.

1) Name three shared albums: Rock Plaza Central - Are We Not Horses; Arrah and the Ferns- Evan is a Vegan; Blonde Redhead - 23

2) Despite its title, Rockism is a deceptive term. I don't think it comments so much on rock and roll as on music as a whole. And in these terms, rockism is an intelligent discourse. Though not quite my cup of tea.

I like its message of music purity, having emphasis on musicians making the music for the music's sake and not for commercial reasons. Also, purity can cue arguments about natural instruments versus synthesisers and other artificial sounds.

It's a mixed concept though for me because I'm a fan of Susumu Yokota, who uses many traditional Japanese instruments, as well as Vangelis. But then you can excuse Vangelis' work because of his artistic intent. I'm a fan of Christina Aguilera as well as Espers, but how do you define Christina's artistic intent? On the other hand, I'm sure you could waffle on about the merits of any album under the sun, and argue "My Humps" is intended to be a ironic pro-feminist essay on depiction of women in mass culture.

I think while music causes intellectual responses in you, I don't think music itself should be interpreted in an overly intellectual way, more on emotion. You can listen to an album and like it, or you can go to Pitchfork, see it has a 6.2 score and decide you don't.

3) Post a link to your favorite picture of Cat Power: http://www.newcenter.com/tastefest/2006/media/photos/MOTORCITY_CASINO_MAIN_STAGE/CAT%20POWER%20&%20THE%20MEMPHIS%20RHYTHM%20BAND.jpg

4) Which artist is better, Sufjan Stevens or Deerhoof? I like both. However, being a fellow Steiner school graduate I have to go for Sufjan Stevens. And Deerhunter eats Deerhoof for breakfast. More seriously, on a musical note I think his concept of creating albums inspired by all of the states of America is restricting him. It's an interesting concept but he's too good to be restricted but I think I'd like to see him tackle a subject that makes him passionate, and to have these passions come across in his music. He's a more interesting musician than Deerhoof because his influences go beyond just his own music, and I like that he's created a circle of collaborators like Danielson, Rosie Thomas etc.

2) Rockism is the translation of the greek word Rockismos, and latin rockismus. Its the encapsilation of all things music in a rock hard appreciation. Rockism is just as much loving music as it is knowing music. Rockism is the inability to fathom just how one record could be so good. Rockism is watching a the needle on a record as if it were a music video. Rockism is cat power's croon, to cocorosie's cackle; and everything in between. Rockism isn't about pretentions or being hip, its about truly loving what you listen to, and never settling for less. Rockism is available in every medium, from the heel of your shoe to the tip of your figers, however, most importantly via OINK!

3) http://www.dollarshort.org/images/mena-and-domo1.jpg

4) Sufjan has proven via journalism his appreciation for modern musicians, which makes him a man I can respect. Also, Sufjan is a collaborator with just about everyone on the musical spectrum imaginable. Though his music hasn't always stricken me as worthy of his potential, the fact that he has that potential makes him one of my favorite artists. Deerhoof have reached their potential, and not to say they won't push beyond it. Actually, if any band could, it would probably be deerhoof. They've come from koalamagic to friend opportunity and are at once completely different, as well as all the same. Deerhoof's singer satomi hasn't changed her spastic shouts, rather perfected them. Not to mention the drummer collaborates with a ton of people too! So I guess it's hard to say. As a band, I like deerhoof more simply because of the variety of sounds their catalog offers. As a musician, I respect Sufjan more, because he is one of the most savvy artists around. Not to mention a damn good musician himself.

5) 1 or 2 would be greatly greatly appreciated.
