Nice touch ending with "Don't You Forget About Me."

I give it a B+ (ish).

I laughed a little at the menengitis joke.

i didn't really have high expectations from the ads/clips i'd seen, but this was a really strong pilot, i laughed a lot. hope it goes well from here.

These people all talk to each other. As iatee referenced above, almost nobody in my classes talks to each other.

right, the whole 'no outside social interaction, people don't know each other' thing is one of the defining features of these places.

I didn't think it was that great, maybe because I felt like I had already seen the entire episode over the ads they showed earlier in the night.

iatee, Friday, 18 September 2009 05:03 (fourteen years ago) link

i wasn't so bullish on the pilot, but yay trudy campbell!

Granted, I went to a smaller community college, but this wasn't true of my experience at all! People in the same classes formed these rag-tag social groups all the time, even if they'd only last a semester or two.

I enjoyed the show a lot -- definitely a stronger pilot than, say, Parks and Recreation last season.

that dude from Derrick Comedy being in this upped my interest about 50%

that said, this pilot was just ok - i'll give it sometime, gotta watch something b/w Office and Sunny until 30 Rock comes back anyway

Nhex, Friday, 18 September 2009 06:10 (fourteen years ago) link

I thought it was strong, I look forward to seeing what they do with the future plotlines. Besides the main character's derisive comments, which weren't overly damning coming from him, there wasn't anything that really cast a negative light on community college; the dorky dean is a universal college staple on TV, and none of the students in the study group at least particularly scream "oh look how retarded comm college students are!". One thing the students seemed to have in common is that they weren't stupid, but for various reasons going to/getting into a four-year school just wasn't feasible at the time, which sums up nicely why a lot of people choose community college.

I went to community college through a Washington State program during my junior and senior year of high school full time and I loved it; getting my AA for free (I literally paid no tuition ever) was a bonus too. I met many really bright people at the comm college and many real morons at my university. Same with professors. As long as the show doesn't devolve into a bunch of community college jokes then I think there's lots of potential.

pete campbell's wife is in this? or am i wrong

just sayin, Saturday, 19 September 2009 08:30 (fourteen years ago) link

Yes, it is Pete's wife! Now I am looking for some crazy way for Pete to make a cameo on this show. He would be great as an officious dean.

i thought the whole plot of the first episode was that these people hadn't talked to each other in class and that we were being the shown catalyst of how they all ended up interacting and having a study group together?

B+ seems about right. pretty funny in places but i did not care for the Life Lessons Learned stuff

As I feared, the Chevy Chase character is turning out to be a little much. Either tone him down or sack him altogether. I like the rest of the cast and the show itself, though.

Johnny Fever, Friday, 25 September 2009 05:04 (fourteen years ago) link

This show is one where I still haven't been able to form an opinion. I need to see some actual humor come out of the minor characters. as a drama the story arch is still pretty interesting... I mean the main character is cool and I can easily relate to community college type experiences and trying to get "the girl". but if the show doesn't step up soon I won't believe that any of the characters are really that funny.

I'm giving it another week or two.

Chevy Chase 2009 would be really, really great as the lead in "Sonofabitch: The Dick Cheney Story"

It's not firing on all cylinders, but I'm already fond of the characters and that makes up for the weaker stuff. Was John Oliver's character a one-off, or is he coming back?

I really liked episode 3! esp the guy from the christopher guest movies what's his name. show has potential.

iatee, Saturday, 3 October 2009 03:49 (fourteen years ago) link

yeah...not so great yet, but I'm forgiving. After a year Parks and Recreation is finally working, these last two episodes have been great, so I'll give Community a season + to prove itself.

P&R has been my favorite of the NBC Thursday night shows all 3 weeks of the season so far.

Johnny Fever, Saturday, 3 October 2009 06:36 (fourteen years ago) link

P&R is slowly getting better. I watching FlashForward and catching it on Hulu, but I feel like FF has more to prove (I'll stick with it for a month or two, at least) while Parks has improved a lot since Season 1 and seems to be getting into a groove. Community's all right, definitely good enough for me to watch while waiting for Sunny to come on.

Nhex, Saturday, 3 October 2009 08:26 (fourteen years ago) link

Thursday is a pretty great night for TV...Office, Community, 30 Rock (starts in October?), Sunny, Project Runway; it's already taking me a few days to catch up.

Subway is looking for one true sandwich fan to change their first name (for real) to "Subway." The brave soul who agrees to do so will be rewarded handsomely with a lifetime of free Subway food and beverages. Whether a legal name change is a large or small price to pay for such an offer is up to you.

Jared would do it.
