i'm playing this rn. it's good, i suppose, but there's just too many design decisions that i disagree with. the scaling of the characters and the game world is a biggie - why does 75% of the game consist of super tight corridors that can't fit any of your group formations? look at fallout and how spacious the indoor environments are (admittedly that's a tile-based game, and it's probably harder to do with 6 characters). i also hate the active time battle combat system, go fully turn-based or dont even bother imo. basically all games should be fallout is what i'm saying.
that said, there's a lot to like about it - it's dauntingly huge, the character interaction is fantastic (makes me wish i could have a bigger party), the pathing is better than in BG1, and most of all it's CHALLENGING as hell (as opposed to say the kotor games which were just retardedly easy). i love when you stumble on all these encounters that you have to redo a million times in a million different ways before you figure out an effective tactic.
dan, what are your favorite party combinations - my player character's an archer, i'm keeping minsc and jaheira for story purposes, i have jan cuz he seems like the best thief (but yoshimo sets better traps and those are pretty handy, so idk), aerie (i ended up developing a romance with her, but only because my only other option [jaheira] is a ball-busting harpy) and nalia (she's just there until i hopefully get imoen back). jaheira seems to make a great tank because of her high dex and ironskin, but i have minsc dual-wielding and he gets hurt a lot so i'm thinking of just giving that fool a bow and lettin him chill in the back w/me and jan. magic seems a lot more important in this one than in BG1 (and ranged attacks are a lot less powerful), and i feel like there's still a lot of stuff i need to figure out there.

My default party was something like:
Jaheira
Minsc
Nalia/Imoen
Aerie
Viconia
Arie's the best magic user, far and away (mage/cleric FTW) and getting Viconia to help with the healing is a much better option than using Jaheira to do it. I had Minsc wade in with broadswords due to his strength and had Nalia or Imoen shooting arrows from the back. My main was a fighter, so I had 2 melee splitting the incoming damage with the other 4 doing ranged damage and 2 possible healers.

when do you get viconia? I have been playing this through again on 'hard' and it is definitely fucking hard. rarely get any spells off before the fight is already over one way or another.
i love how unforgiving the game is. neverwinter nights 2 (and 1?) has instant rez for the entire party if one person survives a battle. Oblivion has monsters that scale to your level. in bg2 you can get major characters obliterated and you can either reload or roll with the consequences.
