BATTAGS, Friday, 11 July 2008 04:01 (fifteen years ago) link

The album's success led to him working with the likes of Sophie Ellis-Bextor and Kylie Minogue, for whom he wrote the forthcoming single In My Arms in his bedroom on a 15-year-old computer.

does this blurb annoy anyone else as much as it annoys me?

... for whom he wrote (insert song title here) for (Insert answer here) on a notepad he nicked from school twenty two years ago!

i think this bears repeating:

"They have offered about £750 in compensation," said the spokeswoman.

"You can't really put a price on something like a new record."

Er, around £750 then? Also, hahaha that's fuck-all.

CharlieNo4, Friday, 11 July 2008 12:14 (fifteen years ago) link

Dope zinging from British Airways officials, there.

Noodle Vague, Friday, 11 July 2008 12:17 (fifteen years ago) link

i think it's kinda funny how calvin harris is all "give me praise! how come people aren't talking about my involvement in the new dizzee single!"
and it's like, well, cos no one likes you and we'd rather forget that you wrote some okay beats for once. plus dizzee's been reeling from his mercury music prize for so long, it's nice to see the fella doing well with one of his less-good singles.
whatever, i'm just bitter cos apparently i look like calvin harris.

horses, Friday, 11 July 2008 12:43 (fifteen years ago) link

But he gets all the girls, he gets all the girls!
Yeah Calvin is pretty shocking but he's not as shocking as plenty of other artists. I say he should stop making music progressively and then quit altogether.

VeronaInTheClub, Friday, 11 July 2008 15:03 (fifteen years ago) link

i went to a gig of his at the astoria earlier this year. it was SHOCKINGLY terrible.

(and i felt about 63 years old, which admittedly didn't help)

CharlieNo4, Friday, 11 July 2008 15:09 (fifteen years ago) link

Why is this Dizzee's first number one rather than the BUGSY MALONE ONE?

People have taste in their arse.

How soon we forget Band Aid 20.

Matt DC, Friday, 11 July 2008 15:22 (fifteen years ago) link

^^This is true, so very true.

VeronaInTheClub, Friday, 11 July 2008 15:24 (fifteen years ago) link

Band Aid 20 I excluded on compassionate grounds.

The stickman from the hilarious "xkcd" comics, Friday, 11 July 2008 15:27 (fifteen years ago) link

Dizzee will never top 'I Luv U'. Calvin will never top losing his laptop.

blueski, Friday, 11 July 2008 15:29 (fifteen years ago) link

^^Hahaha

But peoples; "There won't be snow in Africa this Christmas time (OH I WONDER WHY THE FUCK THERE WOULDN'T BE SNOW ON A CONTINENT THATS GOES THROUGH THE EQUATOR) Do they know its Christmas time at all?" Sorry that line always fucks me up.
I change my mind, Harris must quit but also Geldof should suffer somehow.

VeronaInTheClub, Friday, 11 July 2008 15:39 (fifteen years ago) link

Don't get me started on the lyrics of Feed the World, it's disgustingly glib and misleading. And how about all that snow on the top of all the mountains in Africa?

chap, Friday, 11 July 2008 15:52 (fifteen years ago) link

surely not all of them

Whiney G. Weingarten, Wednesday, 15 April 2009 00:23 (fifteen years ago) link

with a number one solo single, you'd better brace for more.

the very first time i heard it i was convinced it was the worst piece of music i had or ever would hear

and now its just kind of average and i cant bring back those deep feelings of loathing and i don't know where they came from

Popper, Tuesday, 21 April 2009 00:46 (fourteen years ago) link

this is just classic big room superemotional dance music ...?

three weeks pass...

Yo Deej you were right about this. Heard it on the radio yesterday. Big tune!

Tim F, Tuesday, 12 May 2009 13:59 (fourteen years ago) link

I keep trying to remember how this goes and then realise I'm thinking of "Bonkers" instead.

William Bloody Swygart, Tuesday, 12 May 2009 14:01 (fourteen years ago) link

why, why does he sing

Hard House SugBanton (blueski), Tuesday, 12 May 2009 14:06 (fourteen years ago) link

Yes this is a worthy question to ask. His vocals actually work on "Dance Wiv Me" because he's playing middling everyman, but here it's just like, can you please replace your sonky moaning with the girl from Fragma's "Toca's Miracle" so we can properly get down to business?

Tim F, Tuesday, 12 May 2009 14:25 (fourteen years ago) link

or Ian Van Dahl, he had a nice voice. very feminine...

Hard House SugBanton (blueski), Tuesday, 12 May 2009 14:51 (fourteen years ago) link

Ian Van Dahl is female.

kaiser, Wednesday, 13 May 2009 09:09 (fourteen years ago) link

i was just listening to that youtube clip thinking "yuk, this is awful" then the beat kicked in and i figured i'd better just go ahead and download it now as i will no doubt be forced to play this for the tourists sooner or later

he is still like some vile British public school James Murphy

Dear god, I have to witness this fool playing live at the UCL summer ball.
Not only that, but there's a funky house DJ ("Stevie B") on the line up also.

Calvin Harris is trying to ingratiate himself to ILM now!

Calvin Harris has described the state of music in the charts over the past couple of years as 'very depressing'.

The Scottish dance star said the number of guitar bands in recent times had been 'boring'.

Calvin Harris was speaking as he missed out on the award for Best Contemporary Song at the Ivor Novellos.

Harris said: "Things got very depressing, things got very boring with indie band after indie band - it became known as indie-landfill."

Charts change

"There's no more accurate description for the state that music was in," he continued.

Harris and Dizzee Rascal were attending the awards held at London's Grosvenor House Hotel but missed out to Elbow in the category of Best Contemporary Song.

Commenting on an apparent increase in dance music Harris said: "I think people have just realised they just want to have fun for a while.

"I think the summer's coming around…we're in a recession people want to have fun, people want to forget about their worries.

"They want to listen to Bonkers, they want to listen to the new Basement Jaxx single and I think that's a good thing, I love happy music."

Calvin Harris will spend the summer playing festivals including Glastonbury, T In The Park and Creamfields.

funny thing is, his music is just as boring as the shitty "indie" bands he slags off.
