Crema on 17th is haute Mexican. not bad but a little fussy or something, I enjoyed but wasn't knocked out.

wouldn't go out of my way for this place but Zona Rosa on 56th bet 5&6th is real good and relatively inexpensive for midtown if you're stuck for a meal in that tourist/business hell zone.

I always forget to qualify Manhattan -- the new outer boro -- on my restaurant picks

Flatbush Farm had good ingredients but isn't doing great things with them.

yeah I kinda agree with that

that new place James a couple blocks away from there on Carlton (formerly Sorrel) is good, I've only had a couple small plates there so far

dmr, Tuesday, 12 August 2008 03:35 (fifteen years ago) link

what i've eaten at the farm, i loved.

UGH STILL need to go to dressler again, it's like my food fantasy of the year

Surmounter, Tuesday, 12 August 2008 03:36 (fifteen years ago) link

I've had one so-so meal at FF and one pretty good

dmr, Tuesday, 12 August 2008 03:37 (fifteen years ago) link

so pretty in there

Surmounter, Tuesday, 12 August 2008 03:37 (fifteen years ago) link

i like robertas in bushwick

phil-two, Tuesday, 12 August 2008 03:41 (fifteen years ago) link

ff menu looks a little... heavy? i don't know if that's the right word. dark? like, rabbit, duck... it seems very... something. not *quite* summery, maybe?

tehresa, Tuesday, 12 August 2008 03:48 (fifteen years ago) link

gamey?

Surmounter, Tuesday, 12 August 2008 03:49 (fifteen years ago) link

i know what u mean

Surmounter, Tuesday, 12 August 2008 03:49 (fifteen years ago) link

there are very-seasonal components on the menu, but the dishes are far from expressive of the season

gabbneb, Tuesday, 12 August 2008 03:55 (fifteen years ago) link

yeah, that sounds sort of what i was going for.

for some reason the descriptions of flatbush farm are completely cracking me up right now

esp. gabb's, which sounds intriguingly poetic :D

Surmounter, Tuesday, 12 August 2008 04:09 (fifteen years ago) link

i did have a very good entree and there was one element in a dish that was fairly interesting, if a little much. i'm not sure i've sampled enough to say i like stonehome better, but i could probably do that on their respective drinks attitudes alone.

gabbneb, Tuesday, 12 August 2008 04:12 (fifteen years ago) link

although the scoop as of late is stonehome's service has been choppy, and the menu, somewhat redundant?

also i can't get past farm's beautiful dark wood, ugh i luv

Surmounter, Tuesday, 12 August 2008 04:18 (fifteen years ago) link

yeah someone needs to start taking me out to dinner or something.

tehresa, Tuesday, 12 August 2008 04:19 (fifteen years ago) link

yes.

ICI on dekalb is a family favorite. nice garden, nice fresh flavors.

What is good for lunch around 5th and 31st?

Ed, Monday, 18 August 2008 14:29 (fifteen years ago) link

Ed - there is a really good vegetarian korean place right there (I know that sounds suspect, but I love it and am a huge carnivore) called hangawi- its a little expensive and fancy if you're just looking for a quick lunch tho

tehresa, Monday, 18 August 2008 15:22 (fifteen years ago) link

is there any good food in murray hill besides indian or is it all just tasty d?

bell_labs, Tuesday, 19 August 2008 13:53 (fifteen years ago) link

dinner food or lunch/takeout food?

gabbneb, Tuesday, 19 August 2008 13:57 (fifteen years ago) link

both. i am going to school at 24th & lexington
also how is "new york burger company"?

bell_labs, Tuesday, 19 August 2008 13:58 (fifteen years ago) link

Shake Shack, obv

gabbneb, Tuesday, 19 August 2008 14:12 (fifteen years ago) link

nybc is okay. you're not that far from molly's (22nd and 2nd), which makes one of the best burgers in the city imo.

tiffin wallah, chennai garden, saravanaas are all good veg indian. kalustyan's has a cafe on the second floor, where you can get really tasty, enormous sandwiches and middle eastern platters. right near there is a branch of rice, but i've never tried it.

mishima on 31st and lex is pretty good for sushi, and a few doors down saburi (which is japanese-style chinese food) is supposed to have good cold noodles.

lauren, Tuesday, 19 August 2008 14:12 (fifteen years ago) link

it's not super-close, but good deli - http://www.todarobros.com/

gabbneb, Tuesday, 19 August 2008 14:14 (fifteen years ago) link

oh thanks lauren.
i love kalustyan's and am excited that's nearby. i tried rice yesterday and it was pretty good too.

bell_labs, Tuesday, 19 August 2008 14:15 (fifteen years ago) link

la posada, on 3rd ave around 26th/27th, is fast "mexican" that's a step above the fresca tortilla places. they have a rice/beans/grilled meat plate that's a good, quick option.

l'annam (vietnamese) has a branch near there, and while most of the food is mediocre, the grilled pork chops are great and a great deal at lunch.

xpost - todaro's is good, but i wouldn't go out of the way for it. for sandwiches, this place is better and closer to where she'll be:

lauren, Tuesday, 19 August 2008 14:16 (fifteen years ago) link

btw, 24th and Lex is Flatiron or Kips Bay, not Murray Hill

gabbneb, Tuesday, 19 August 2008 14:17 (fifteen years ago) link

Curry Hill, maybe

gabbneb, Tuesday, 19 August 2008 14:20 (fifteen years ago) link

3rd avenue is considered the western boundary of kips bay, as far as i know.

lauren, Tuesday, 19 August 2008 14:20 (fifteen years ago) link

and isn't it too far east to be flatiron?

lauren, Tuesday, 19 August 2008 14:21 (fifteen years ago) link

it's the transition zone between the two, hence Curry Hill if anything. but it's definitely not Murray Hill, which ends several blocks North.

gabbneb, Tuesday, 19 August 2008 14:22 (fifteen years ago) link

i still have not been to shake shack!

someone suggest a bar in the bedford-ish area that is sort of nice but not too $$$ for me to take my friend for bday drinks tonight. she is dining w/ her parents at aurora (i think?) first, so somewhere nearby would be good.

tehresa, Tuesday, 19 August 2008 14:33 (fifteen years ago) link

true - i think of murray hill as 34th street and above. so what the hell is that neighborhood? i think it's sometimes called "northern gramercy" by real estate agents, but that's clearly bullshit. wiki suggests "rose hill," which is cute.

lauren, Tuesday, 19 August 2008 14:37 (fifteen years ago) link

guys... i have about 30 min to decide on where we are going! help!
anyone been to soft spot or oulo? is oulo too froo froo? what is the deal with the 'piano bar' aspect of soft spot? this is all coming from fr33williamsburg, nymag and yelp, so i need help (oulo mysteriously not on yelp!).

tehresa, Tuesday, 19 August 2008 23:54 (fifteen years ago) link

good food i had when i was in nyc last week:

pure food and wine
alta tapas restaurant
cafe 2 at MOMA

t0dd swiss, Tuesday, 19 August 2008 23:58 (fifteen years ago) link

maybe i will just pick ottoman bc it is easy :)

tehresa, Wednesday, 20 August 2008 00:08 (fifteen years ago) link

i really wish i could help you but i'm not in the know. have fun!

Surmounter, Wednesday, 20 August 2008 00:08 (fifteen years ago) link

i don't really want to go at all. i already did an all-day thing on sunday for her bday... i don't know why i've been 'invited' to take her out again. also i'm going to get the sloppy end of things as she met someone for drinks earlier and will be coming from dinner w/ her parents where she will surely also drink. so maybe a not too fancy place?

tehresa, Wednesday, 20 August 2008 00:19 (fifteen years ago) link
