I was introe'd to these guys on the weekend via Pentastar, which was really good!

I had a flat promo cd of Pentastar that I bought when it was new for a few bucks. Kicked myself for years on missing the original vinyl. Once I saw the reissues advertised, I bought myself a nice 12" version and Dj the finale on a pretty regular basis. One of my favorite guitar solos ever--right up there with Paul Leary and Elliot Easton as far as its succintness, melodic quality, and epic feel.

You guys know that Cobain played on the first album, right?

Earth will still occasionally end a set with something from Pentastar. (They did at the in-store last spring during EMP)

i still have my promo cd of pentastar. i love that album too. i guess i like it cuz it's the most "rock" earth album. i dunno. it's just cool.

I wish there was a whole genre of albums like Pentastar.

I once had a dream that I started a tribute band to that album called HighH Command. Yess, with 3 "H"s.

It makes sense except that I just don't hear it that way. It seems so incredibly stoned and laid back. They're not even trying to rock really... and yet in places it does anyway. It's got a total savant quality that probably shouldn't work, but does (for me anyway).

Pentastar was always my favourite, was great when they played coda maestoso in f(flat) minorin Glasgow when they toured with Sunn o)))

Hibernaculum is one of my favorite (non)albums of 2007, like this probably more than the older stuff by them I've heard. The DVD was crap though. Is the new one out yet?

I liked the DVD. But yes, I agree Hibernaculum was excellent.

There were some interesting interviews, but visually it didn't really match the music, all grey and grainy.

Does the new one have a release date?

There's nothing on the Southern Lord site about it. It sounds great on first listen, though.

Picked up the new Earth today at a Zavvi in Dublin, for only 15 euro -- I didn't think it was out till the end of the month. Anyway, on first pass it's very good, with real monsoon-rains-in-the-desert vibe to it. Certainly not drone doom, though.

I'll second the above post -- the new album is FANTASTIC, one of the best things I've heard in '08 so far. Expands a bit further on the americana, folk and gospel influences that surfaced on Hex and Hibernaculum. Perhaps the best album they've done!

^^^^^ This. It was the ideal disc for me to get acquainted with Southern Lord records (tho probably not representative of the label's artists).

not at all representative, you're right, but definitely a nice gateway. check out some of the Boris stuff too, it's fairly accessible for Southern Lord. then move in deeper. lots o' good stuff on that label.

oh! and don't forget Earth's previous album, Hex; Or Printing in the Infernal Method, which is in relatively the same vein as the new one, and really really good as well. highly recommended.

Yes it is like the new one. But really the new songs are much better live. btw there's a tour only live album over at southernlord.com that was on sale at the european gigs, its awesome and quite ltd so you should all pick it up, its fab. I got mine in glasgow.
Also apparently on their current tour there's a new live cd that id love to buy. Anyone pick it up?

Just listening to "Extra-Capsular...", it's fine but rather leaden and sortieish. "Phase 3"'s a lot more interesting, to me. Also seconding whoever thought the solo on "Coda in etc"'s up there with anyone's ever, btw

Gawd I still haven't found Phase 3, that's pretty much the last one I need to get. Have all the others.

Went to see them Saturday night, opening for Jesse Sykes. Fine show, greatly enhanced by the guy playing Wurlitzer and trombone. Also, hearing Dylan talking between songs made me realize why they rarely have vocals.
