Why has only one other person on these boards noticed that "Take Me Out" = "Can't Stop" by the Red Hot Chili Peppers?

Dom Passantino (Dom Passantino), Saturday, 13 March 2004 22:44 (twenty years ago) link

five months pass...
...They really do suck. Had the misfortune of seeing them live recently. Went in with an open mind not really having heard much of their stuff. To say that I was bored is being polite. The crowd was well into it though. Me and my buddy were looking around wondering what the hell was going on. I couldn't help but wonder if there was something that I just wasn't getting which might explain peoples' ecstatic reactions to this bunch of pretenders. Having only heard the singles and a handful of album tracks, I was going to give the whole album a shot to see if it changed anything, but I can't be bothered. Seriously, can someone explain why the whole world is going crazy over these guys?

J-rock (Julien Sandiford), Thursday, 19 August 2004 08:41 (nineteen years ago) link

(lots of) people like easy things but they also like to look smart and complicated. franz ferdinand are easy, they're a piece of piss, but have somehow managed to convince everyone that they're Difficult and Complex. meh. pfft. can take 'em or leave 'em, personally.

saw them live, thought they were fun and energetic, atmosphere was amazing, but theyre kind of a one trick pony. all their songs have more or less the same riffs, the same mechanical rhythms, and maybe even the same chords.

dickvandyke (dickvandyke), Thursday, 19 August 2004 11:23 (nineteen years ago) link

i'm never one to pass up a grammar fight, but bands are always singular in american english.

which kinda makes sense, you know.

but hey.

sorry but this hating on and on about Franz Ferdinand kind of reminds me of guys who obviously hide their gayness by trumpeting their homophobia

with respect to roger a; of course i don't mean to single you out.

Thea (Thea), Thursday, 19 August 2004 21:17 (nineteen years ago) link

I like this album a lot. They do a good job of making nu-wave sound like Paul Revere & The Raiders.

What are we supposed to be hiding?

roxymuzak (roxymuzak), Thursday, 19 August 2004 21:19 (nineteen years ago) link

We are supposed to be hiding.....our sausage in whatever orifice we truly, deeply desire.

Thea (Thea), Thursday, 19 August 2004 21:20 (nineteen years ago) link

I sense a pulsing subtext.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 19 August 2004 21:21 (nineteen years ago) link

We just have one sausage? Better be selective then.

roxymuzak (roxymuzak), Thursday, 19 August 2004 21:22 (nineteen years ago) link

Most individuals I know are of that gender have only one sausage. Though I have heard of exceptions.

Thea (Thea), Thursday, 19 August 2004 21:24 (nineteen years ago) link

Well, perhaps they are Viennas.

(Thea, I must say that knowing the good Mr. J-Rock as I do, when he says he doesn't like something, he is in fact telling you what he thinks rather than being strangely ironic.)

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 19 August 2004 21:24 (nineteen years ago) link

who's J-Rock, Ned? and what is a "Vienna"? Forgive my naivete.

The whole world is going crazy about these guys cuz they make danceable fun rock songs about goin' clubbin'! This ain't rocket science, folks.

CeCe Peniston (Anthony Miccio), Thursday, 19 August 2004 21:27 (nineteen years ago) link

"bands are always singular in american english"
No they're not. Love is coming to your town. The Pixies are not.
"(lots of) people like easy things but they also like to look smart and complicated."
Should read "everyone likes"
Franz Ferdinand aren't bad. If you can't understand why people don't like them, listen to their lyrics. "I was telling Terry (whatever British guy) about, how I made it and . . . what I made is unclear now, but his deference is, and his laughter is . . ."
I point that out not because it's particularly luculent but because it's invigoratingly arrogant, tinged with an archly sighing regret about being so wonderful. That's very easy to resent, especially when you're not laying models. "Women think I'm tasty, they're always trying to waste me." Remember that?
PS: The Strokes sound like Guided by Voices. See "Hard to Explain."

J-Rock is the sausage king of Chicago.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 19 August 2004 21:31 (nineteen years ago) link

M@tt He1geson (Matt Helgeson), Thursday, 19 August 2004 21:32 (nineteen years ago) link

Amen to that.
They themselves say the same thing about what their music is, that is isn't closer to God than anything else, or whatever.

I supposed I joined in here because it seems pretty clear most of us agree that that their music is not deep and meaningful, yet the hate they extract from ILM outweighs the need, in my opinion, for what that's worth.

Hate away if you don't like it but why work the knickers into such a twist about these guys in particular? From what I've seen they don't even need to be taken down a peg, they don't put on airs as far as I know. Maybe that's changed and they need as much hate as possible.

Thea (Thea), Thursday, 19 August 2004 21:33 (nineteen years ago) link

i would have thought that the poppy and contrived and catchy and playful (perhaps even saucy) nature of FF would make them ILM favs....

dean? (deangulberry), Thursday, 19 August 2004 21:50 (nineteen years ago) link

Yeah but they sound like they're tryin to be all deep, in a kind of dippy American Bandstand kind of way. "Let me weave you a spell..." They're the quintessential American Bandstand band. In fact, I think I'd like them if they were introduced by Dick Clark(e?)! At least while they were playing. But there's this kind of Derek and the Dominoes feel to them battling with the Kinks side. It never busts loose like they make you feel like it ought to. (Daft Punk remix of "Take Me Out" kind of deals with this in a hilariously ham-handed way)

Tracer Hand (tracerhand), Thursday, 19 August 2004 22:04 (nineteen years ago) link

I don't think there's that much ILM hate for FF - it's just that haters are often louder around here (and criticism is often more interesting - if not more productive - to read than praise). I initially thought this band was a pale Strokes imitation, and I still don't think their songs are as strong, but I like them very much on the level of dance music. "Take Me Out" is a straight up floor-filler at really different kinds of clubs.

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Thursday, 19 August 2004 22:15 (nineteen years ago) link

Oh, and the Daft Punk remix is really just more of a good thing.

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Thursday, 19 August 2004 22:15 (nineteen years ago) link

This is a place to let out frustration and ??s about boring things getting their cocks sucked so fucking constantly and hard elsewhere.

Yeah, we don't really think they're boring. We must love them because we talk about them a lot! wtf

roxymuzak (roxymuzak), Thursday, 19 August 2004 22:31 (nineteen years ago) link

okay then: if you wanted to get the same sort of "vibe" (for lack of a better word) that FF provides, what would you listen too? Only current bands please, because all the old, similar sounding bands have been absorbed to saturation point.

Zongamin remix of Matinee > Daft Punk remix of Take Me Out

the neurotic awakening of s (blueski), Thursday, 19 August 2004 22:47 (nineteen years ago) link

I would rather listen to "Take Me Out" than "To Hell With Poverty" right now.

Atnevon (Atnevon), Thursday, 19 August 2004 22:48 (nineteen years ago) link

I don't find them that boring at all. They're fun for long drives or late night drinking/posting sessions and a soulseek copy of the self-titled kept me warm through the winter. Unlike many "it" bands, FF seem to have an actual sense of humor in their music, which makes their whole arty/fashionable come-ons easier to swallow.

Ned already mentioned their affinity for Sparks, but I'm also glad they keep talking about ABBA in their interviews. A lot of their album tracks remind me of the overwrought decadence and sensuality in "Lay all your love on me" or "Gimme gimme gimme (a man after midnight)." To my ears, they seem to pay homage to that sort of music without sounding like they're trying too hard to pull it off (except perhaps the opening track).

I suppose the reverse argument could be made, that instead of giving a hint of subtlety and intellect their music simply feigns sophistication in order to lure the hordes of pretentious college students who refuse to shake their asses to the plainer plebeian stylings of Lil' Jon. Well, so be it. Like my ass gives a damn.

Slim Pickens (Slim Pickens), Thursday, 19 August 2004 23:00 (nineteen years ago) link

I would submit that they might provide the opportunity (say a more fey and gay and englishy) way to shake your ass than Lil Jon...I'd bet lots of college students would shake their asses to both LIl Jon and FF (I bet if you go to college bars now you'd probably see than in the same nite!)....

....there is more than one way to shake an ass.

M@tt He1geson (Matt Helgeson), Thursday, 19 August 2004 23:07 (nineteen years ago) link

I hear that Franz Ferdinand are "15 pounds of fuck puppy in a 10 pound bag." Who knew?

Sara Sherr, Thursday, 19 August 2004 23:12 (nineteen years ago) link

....there is more than one way to shake an ass.

Well yeah, but then you still have plenty of people who prefer one over the other. And neither group are wrong. ;-)

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 19 August 2004 23:13 (nineteen years ago) link

Oh, I go to college bars and I've heard all about Lil Jon's sweaty balls, but to my knowledge the Franz haven't yet managed to penetrate the watering holes of Athens, Ohio. Maybe by the time I get back that will have changed. Tragically, we're still in the eye of the hurricane that is the 80s revival, and it's going to be a long hard battle to get anyone to admit that ABBA is as fun to dance to as one of those sophisticated 80s new wave acts like say, Madonna or Cyndi Lauper.
