haha remember a year ago when guy was all "i see why people don't like my outbursts, i'm going to behave from now on"

he was just saying what everyone was thinking. the cars' "you might think" beat "thriller" for video of the year, someone needs to knock some sense into MTV.

wow didn't know "nike boots" sampled a wale song, got really excited for a second when they played it during a transition

pill's song "nike boots" samples a wale song (if jordan s is right - im not familiar w/ him), so when wale (who is the house MC) was performing that song during one of the transitions i got excited, thinking they were doing a pill joint.

the hoos otm part was an xpost and unrelated

dorroughmac (k3vin k.), Monday, 14 September 2009 04:26 (fourteen years ago) link

also i was out when this ran live so i'm just catching this on the re-run now

dorroughmac (k3vin k.), Monday, 14 September 2009 04:26 (fourteen years ago) link

was it hipsters who enabled Kanye to turn into such an asshole, or was he like that from the start?

nicky lo-fi, Monday, 14 September 2009 04:34 (fourteen years ago) link

excuse me i was not hating on the cars, just saying that the VMAs tend to be victims of the future

musically, Monday, 14 September 2009 04:34 (fourteen years ago) link

"nike boots" is kinda wale's big signature song, had a lil wayne remix, etc. although it was kinda lame and not actually that big so it's not like i'm gonna clown you for not knowing it. i guess pill did a freestyle over the beat? (xpost)

some dude I met once shoots gun w/ them (some dude), Monday, 14 September 2009 04:35 (fourteen years ago) link

Kanye was always an asshole btw, he just didn't have as big a platform or as much confidence to display it before

Cunga, Monday, 14 September 2009 04:43 (fourteen years ago) link

OK the problem with this is not what Kanye did, but that WTF about "single ladies" being the best video of all time? Like, how many many videos has this dude watched, three?

Also, yeah since when have the VMAs have been anything but shit?

one boob is free with one (daavid), Monday, 14 September 2009 04:44 (fourteen years ago) link

I can think of at least 3 Kanye West videos that are better than Single Ladies.

Johnny Fever, Monday, 14 September 2009 04:45 (fourteen years ago) link

kanye was right tho, the "single ladies" video is a classic - no one is disagreeing with him

dorroughmac (k3vin k.), Monday, 14 September 2009 04:45 (fourteen years ago) link

ok except u dorks

dorroughmac (k3vin k.), Monday, 14 September 2009 04:45 (fourteen years ago) link

its a classic video imo

both HOOSlarious and truthful (BIG HOOS aka the steendriver), Monday, 14 September 2009 04:46 (fourteen years ago) link

Can we get back to blaming hipsters for Kanye's success?

Hoot Smalley, Monday, 14 September 2009 04:47 (fourteen years ago) link

I am totally disagreeing!!! Single ladies is an OK video, not by any stretch of the imagination.

one boob is free with one (daavid), Monday, 14 September 2009 04:47 (fourteen years ago) link

^not classic by any stretch...

one boob is free with one (daavid), Monday, 14 September 2009 04:48 (fourteen years ago) link

not only is no one going to remember the "you belong with me" video in 20 years they probably won't remember taylor swift either. "single ladies" being the best video of all time is certainly debatable but it's definitely going to be a mainstay on those Top 100 Music Video specials on VH1 and MTV2 from now on, not sure if any other video nominated this year can say that.

Kanye West would make an excellent heel in the world of pro wrestling.

Cunga, Monday, 14 September 2009 05:00 (fourteen years ago) link

Well I'd have to think about that. On top of my head, I'd say I prefer Empire of the Sun's "Walking on a Dream" and La Roux's "Quicksand" better that any of the nominees. I just think the VMA's have been way off the mark for at least 15 years.

3. 4chan 17-year-olds/Vice mag 20-year-olds/cankles 30-year-olds trying out racial slurs to amuse themselves and shock others

idk man, those tweets seemed dead serious to me, lots of 14 year old white kids who think that just because katt williams says "niggas are ruining it for us niggers" that it's okay for them to differentiate between the two which is a lot of what those tweets are about

iirc flair (J0rdan S.), Thursday, 24 September 2009 04:51 (fourteen years ago) link

i thought chris rock's "i love black people but i hate niggas" was still the earnest self-justifying racist's best friend, did katt supplant him?

tbh i couldn't remember if it was katt or chris (because i am a racist) but since i've seen much more katt stand up in my life than rock i just went with katt. i'm really not sure tho. i'm sure it's possible that katt did the same bit.

yeah that was a chris rock bit from like 15 years ago. I remember dudes in my '90s high school using it to justify they're own weird racism. I had a friend who said Michael Jordan was a black person and Shaquille O'Neal was, uh, the other.

yes, kanye is a black black guy. yes, taylor is a white white girl. yes, kanye is kind of a dick. yes, racist assholes will take advantage of kanye's dickishness to try to make some badly formed "point". but taking an informal collection of twitter searches for "kanye+nigger" and offering it up as proof of a trend has the same level of journalistic thoroughness and integrity that the NYT shows with it's frequent "Guava Jelly shows up in 4.3 million google searches".

I dunno; this all seems really predictable and sad and tired and i'm not sure i see it as much more than "harry allen: discovering there are idiots on twitter" excepting the reasonable but obvious point that outright racism truly ought to be at least as repugnant to any right-thinking person as threatening someone with direct violence. Claiming that this is noteworthy because we're "living in postracial times" is silly; Allen knows as well as anyone that nobody spread pixie dust post Obama. Shit's getting more and more racist on the daily with all this "not my country" nonsense. What am I missing in that piece that has greater import?
