stevem dyou mean people can't find you by searching for your name?

I have joined both my primary school and secondary school groups today and it has pretty much confirmed what I said upthread; there is only one person in the secondary school group that I know, the vast majority are either at uni now or graduated in the last couple of years.

umm, my facebook news feed is going crazy. It's saying things like "9 of your friends have written on so-and-so's wall", when like one person has actually written on it.
What's the deal? Have other people noticed this? oh god.
― Drooone, Wednesday, 8 August 2007 00:29 (sixteen years ago) link
Okay someone from school has just tried to friend me - I've not seen him since the age of 16. Usually I am prepared to give people from school the benefit of the doubt, even if I didn't like them at the time. Then I read his profile, including choice cuts like:
"Religious Views: 102% agnostic -2% catholic 100% millwall"
"Favorite Books: Do androids dream of electic sheep? other than that biographies of heroes of mine. The bible, because it's really really funny. razzle, readers wives, h & e "
and in particular:
"Interests: Football, other things too, like football, millwall, naked swedish ladies table tennis (with or without the ball), topless farts, knob gags, growing my beard. "
As I said, I am usually willing to give people from school the benefit of the doubt - in this case I am considering deleting my Facebook profile, leaving the country and having reconstructive surgery so that he can never find me.
― Matt DC, Wednesday, 8 August 2007 08:53 (sixteen years ago) link
knob gags? is that what I think it is?
― nathalie, Wednesday, 8 August 2007 09:17 (sixteen years ago) link
Haha I dont think anyone from school will find me, unless they know my email address which is very unlikely.
Today I sent a msg to an old housemate of mine from Canberra. I'm pretty sure its him, he has an unusual name. I hope he replies, it'd be cool to catch up with him.

I had my first message from an ex-girlfriend a couple of days ago. But she finished with me because she decided she was gay (yes, I'm that bad) so there's no awkwardness around it, it was actually a pleasant surprise.
― Colonel Poo, Wednesday, 8 August 2007 09:44 (sixteen years ago) link
Oh dear. I just rofled. Sorry CP.
― kv_nol, Wednesday, 8 August 2007 09:48 (sixteen years ago) link
No.
But she finished with me because she decided she was gay
This has happened to me too. She's now married. To my then best friend.
― Mark C, Wednesday, 8 August 2007 09:52 (sixteen years ago) link
Actually that's disingenuous. He wasn't my best friend until a year or so after I dated her.
― Mark C, Wednesday, 8 August 2007 09:53 (sixteen years ago) link
Oh she really is gay, it wasn't a line. She lives in Brighton now, even!
― Colonel Poo, Wednesday, 8 August 2007 09:56 (sixteen years ago) link
stevie nixed, we are now friends! interestingly, we list exactly the same 'activities'... ;)
plz don't challenge me to scrabble! i sux big time, and am getting some practise in with my equally suxy friend before i can engage with others.
― Rubyredd, Wednesday, 8 August 2007 09:59 (sixteen years ago) link
Colonel, mine really was gay too! After me, she desultorily tried to lose her virginity to some other guy, it didn't work, and she then exclusively dated women for several years. Interestingly, her first long term girlfriend then date my best friend after they split up, and it was only when the third part of the triangle joined together that they settled down and got married. Interestingly, they never had a threesome.
― Mark C, Wednesday, 8 August 2007 10:18 (sixteen years ago) link
xpost Oh god, I SUXOR EVEN BADLIER at Scrabble! And you like the same Bukowski books as I do! HURRAH! :-) And yes, as few/little activity as possible.hah!

i think it might be time to delete my myspaz profile (now that i'm a fb addict): this fucking KID just sent me a friend request - http://profile.myspace.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=user.viewprofile&friendid=135259671. because obviously he could tell from my profile that i want to be friends with a 15yr old school boy.
― Rubyredd, Wednesday, 8 August 2007 11:07 (sixteen years ago) link
xpost Ah we need'em to read all those GREBT books! :-) And I also deleted the MySpace profile. Go on, you can do it!
― nathalie, Wednesday, 8 August 2007 11:13 (sixteen years ago) link
Yes, I deleted my myspace profile too. I really lost it with them when they started showing me ads while I was logging in (or they were trying to, anyway).
― accentmonkey, Wednesday, 8 August 2007 11:22 (sixteen years ago) link
i'm seriously considering it - most of my good friends/internet friends on there are people i speak with on other boards/forums/aim/email, so it seems kinda unnecessary to still have it. but i like the slideshows for all my favourite art, and i like the blog where i get to post my friend's poetry and writing.
definitely considering it, though...
― Rubyredd, Wednesday, 8 August 2007 11:23 (sixteen years ago) link
Is information on the rate of deletions of profiles on social networking sites in the public domain? I think it's an interesting topic. we are always hearing abt the growth in the no. of users of facebook, myspace or whatever but presumably this doesn't take deletions into a/c.
it's surely more common for social networking profiles to become dormant rather than be deleted tho. I haven't done anything on my myspace for ages apart from read incoming messages and friend requests but I have no plans to delete the profile.

― Matt DC, Monday, 20 August 2007 12:04 (sixteen years ago) link
Obv not you. :-) I don't know, I wouldn't do it personally, but why not? If you are indeed looking for a relationship, why not post that? If I had been single, I'd want the option: "Piss off, I like being single" option
