teach me how to fight

Simon H., Wednesday, 9 September 2009 01:29 (fourteen years ago) link

I figure Teach Me How To Fight will win this, but I loved the thumping foundation of Under The Sun.

Daniel, Esq., Wednesday, 9 September 2009 01:39 (fourteen years ago) link

last exit is the best song to drive around on a foggy night to. this album still rules. teach me how to fight comes a veeeerrry close second though.

Michael B, Wednesday, 9 September 2009 01:44 (fourteen years ago) link

no idea that Teach Me How to Fight was so loved, it's not one of my favorites at all. voted for Under the Sun.

picked up the sneer-slack (sciolism), Wednesday, 9 September 2009 02:06 (fourteen years ago) link

Damn, I thought this was going to be a thread about Last Exit.

anagram, Wednesday, 9 September 2009 07:45 (fourteen years ago) link

oh man so hard. "teach me how to fight". the way the melody in its coda resolves the whole song...

"under the sun" prob my 2nd favourite.

lex pretend, Wednesday, 9 September 2009 07:49 (fourteen years ago) link

I think my favourites are "More Than Real" and "High Come Down", I wish they'd done more tracks in that sexy driving 2-step vein.

Voted for 'Birthday'

Peinlich Manoeuvre (NickB), Wednesday, 9 September 2009 11:00 (fourteen years ago) link

i will listen to this today. amazing amazing record. i think it will remain timeless?

cutty, Wednesday, 9 September 2009 11:56 (fourteen years ago) link

I'm torn between the title track and More Than Real. This is so far above the rest of their material it isn't funny.

Tuncay Stryder (Matt DC), Wednesday, 9 September 2009 11:58 (fourteen years ago) link

high come down. just beautiful.

dan138zig (Durrr Durrr Durrrrrr), Wednesday, 9 September 2009 12:04 (fourteen years ago) link

I think "Birthday" was my favourite at the time, might have to relisten before i vote though. The Fennesz remix of "Last Exit" is also great.

Number None, Wednesday, 9 September 2009 12:29 (fourteen years ago) link

yeah one of my favorite remixes ever, which I always play in summer when a heatwave kicks in - such a hazy and languid vibe off of that one

spiny doughboy (baaderonixx), Wednesday, 9 September 2009 12:32 (fourteen years ago) link

Junior Boys have been diminishing returns for me - this album is fantastic, Is This Goodbye is pretty good, and Begone Dull Care hasn't really grabbed me, apart from a couple of tracks.

Zelda Zonk, Wednesday, 9 September 2009 13:08 (fourteen years ago) link

i'm not sure that's what diminishing returns means

cutty, Wednesday, 9 September 2009 14:47 (fourteen years ago) link

always dug bellona the most ~ should re-listen lotta great tracks

johnny crunch, Wednesday, 9 September 2009 15:04 (fourteen years ago) link

More Than Real is the one I listen to most, then Teach Me How To Fight

OCD Scrobbles (I am using your worlds), Wednesday, 9 September 2009 15:16 (fourteen years ago) link

All of them.

Touch of Death, Wednesday, 9 September 2009 15:51 (fourteen years ago) link

this is a tough one. i still enjoy this album a lot.

Crêpe Diem (carne asada), Wednesday, 9 September 2009 15:55 (fourteen years ago) link

Bellona narrowly ahead of Birthday

Teh Movable Object (Nasty, Brutish & Short), Wednesday, 9 September 2009 21:58 (fourteen years ago) link

Actually, not sure about that now I've listened to them again

Teh Movable Object (Nasty, Brutish & Short), Wednesday, 9 September 2009 22:10 (fourteen years ago) link

Bellona is the only track on this that I'm pretty indifferent to.

spiny doughboy (baaderonixx), Thursday, 10 September 2009 07:47 (fourteen years ago) link

high come down

Paul in Santa Cruz, Thursday, 10 September 2009 16:10 (fourteen years ago) link

"More Than Real"

Size-zero-brigade-embrace-token-chubby-chops (jon /via/ chi 2.0), Thursday, 10 September 2009 16:13 (fourteen years ago) link

so i had a chance to re-listen to this today, it was better than i remember! going to vote for "High Come Down."

going to play again tomorrow.

Bee OK, Saturday, 12 September 2009 02:45 (fourteen years ago) link

'Under the Sun' - mainly because of its hypnotic, West-End-Girls-ish quality that hooked me at first listen

Bellona is a close 2nd though

Malcolm Money, Saturday, 12 September 2009 05:27 (fourteen years ago) link

i'm not voting in this but only b/c i can't decide. i think "birthday" was the first song to hook me. but i put "high comes down" on my best of '04 mix. and "under the sun" is so great whenever i've seen them live. and "bellona" and "teach me how to fight" are fantastic, too.

jaymc, Saturday, 12 September 2009 06:11 (fourteen years ago) link

sleeper hit on this for me is THREE WORDS. especially walking home on a dusky grey nite

anza, Saturday, 12 September 2009 14:04 (fourteen years ago) link

High Come Down

rentboy, Saturday, 12 September 2009 16:29 (fourteen years ago) link

I don't know this album very well besides "Last Exit" and "Birthday" which are both among my favorite 00's songs.. I should probably listen to the rest soon.

billstevejim, Saturday, 12 September 2009 16:32 (fourteen years ago) link

You should. The earlier singles (or all the singles, I guess) are all Johnny Dark collaborations, whereas some of the stuff toward the end of the album isn't, although it's still in the same vein but doesn't have the 2-step flavor to it that Tim mentioned.

I think I still have what was supposedly the unreleased MFA remix of Bellona, somewhere...

mh, Saturday, 12 September 2009 21:06 (fourteen years ago) link

Automatic thread bump. This poll is closing tomorrow.

System, Saturday, 12 September 2009 23:01 (fourteen years ago) link

voted "teach me how to fight" as i think i have listened to it at least 200x's.

i always feel a bit melancholy whenever i play "last exit". as an aside, nice to see nick kilroy's kin records site still online.

drone/a/sore, Saturday, 12 September 2009 23:52 (fourteen years ago) link

hmm I voted birthday but reading through the responses I agree that teach me how to fight is just as good
I like these polls where I can make an honest vote having heard every song

CaptainLorax, Sunday, 13 September 2009 03:16 (fourteen years ago) link

I also like 'High Come Down' and 'Last Exit'
I much prefer this to the newer Junior Boys cd which isn't as catchy or soul-gripping as songs like Birthday and Teach Me How To Fight

CaptainLorax, Sunday, 13 September 2009 03:22 (fourteen years ago) link

hey birthday is track 6 - another win for my favorite track # (like in that poll) :)

CaptainLorax, Sunday, 13 September 2009 03:24 (fourteen years ago) link

unbirthday is pretty great as well

CaptainLorax, Sunday, 13 September 2009 03:27 (fourteen years ago) link

Automatic thread bump. This poll's results are now in.

System, Sunday, 13 September 2009 23:01 (fourteen years ago) link

There's no way TMHTF is the best track...I like it and everything, but the first four tracks and Birthday are miles better. The songs with Johnny Dark are what make the album the classic that it is.

Touch of Death, Monday, 14 September 2009 15:10 (fourteen years ago) link

ILM otm

bnw, Monday, 14 September 2009 15:19 (fourteen years ago) link

would definitely have voted for 'three words'. what's it doing all the way down there with 1 vote?

http://devonrecordclub.wordpress.com/2012/09/08/junior-boys-last-exit-round-34-toms-selection/

It really is a hard album to pin down. Has it stood the test of time?

one year passes...

yes imo

christmas candy bar (al leong), Saturday, 12 April 2014 17:38 (ten years ago) link

wish some of these songs were longer.. like "more than real" or "under the sun" should have 5+ minute outros where they just vibe into the sunset.

brimstead, Saturday, 12 April 2014 19:20 (ten years ago) link

isn't that how they rock 'under the sun' live, shoegaze stylee?

j., Saturday, 12 April 2014 20:47 (ten years ago) link

yeah this is album is a classic

everyday sheeple (Michael B), Saturday, 12 April 2014 21:27 (ten years ago) link

Yes

willem, Wednesday, 13 March 2019 08:44 (five years ago) link

True on both accounts (and timeless goes for most of their discography imo). I wonder what they're up to.

2018 was a terribly difficult year made easier by great friends, family and well wishers. love to all. new music in 2019. 🖖 LLAP
